The food was nice and the service was fast but the workers didn’t care about what was going on for example a child was running about for 5 minutes before any of the workers noticed

Definitely worth a wee visit, delicious fresh fish & chips, with a wide variety of options available, including vegetarian and vegan. They do a few desert dishes. We opted for the kit kat sundae 🍨 worth the visit in itself.

Was looking for a decent fish and chip restaurant near Carlisle so decided to try The Original John's Place - service was quick and friendly, prices reasonable and the food really tasty with good sized portions. Strong recommend.

The place is great, a bit retro but very charismatic. I tried 5 times Fish & Chips in Carlisle in 5 days and this was the best. Clean operation environment, nice service, nothing to complain about. Good parking options. We will come again.

Possibly the best and certainly the most consistently good Fish and Chips in Cumbria. Can always guarantee light crispy batter on the fish and well cooked chips.

We came here on the way back from Carlisle, many times we have driven past while on holiday in the area, and said one day we will stop for food, well today was the day we stopped, we can say it was worth it, great food and plenty of it, good service.

Great service, great range, great food and great prices. Absolutely spot on and we'll worth a visit. Will be going back soon.

It's probably the best fish and chips we've had recently. My girls who can be pretty fussy. One had turkey dinosaurs, chips and gravy and the other had sausage and gravy. All completely finished. My good lady had cod and chips, the batter was so tasty and light. I had salt and chilli chicken and chips all very tasty. Will happily return again when down this way!

Absolutely lovely fish and chips. Batter crispy not greasey. Had the pensioners deal with mushy peas, tea and bread and butter. At 10.95 in August 2023, I think that's pretty damn good. The place is a bit dated, hey its been there a while but it was spotlessly clean and staff were very nice. Give it a go if your passing, you won't be disappointed.

terrible. Runny watery gravy. Battered sausage tasted weird and the chips were just completely tasteless. Bad value. Asked for a small portion of chips not a tiny. And almost £9 for the privilege. Had better oven chips. AVOID

Just a shame the turkey and ham pie is no longer on the menu. But food and service e is still excellent!

Great food here, very tasty. Polite staff. It was raining hard and all the other customers were sheltering in there like drowned rats which put a downer on things, but not my problem (or the staffs).

Food was not up to standard missing mushy peas but still paid for them my jacket potato was a complete grease ball the grease was running around all over the potato and coleslaw not pleasent

Very clean and friendly, attentive service. Fish and chips and the sticky toffee pudding and custard were perfect.

November 2021: I was passing by John's on my way home at the right time so I decided to stop here for an easy dinner. Try the Seniors Special, great value for the smaller appetite.

A handy stop off for a quality chip shop… This place is quirky but that’s why I like it, it really feels somewhat like an old American style diner - it could be because I somewhat remember it as a Little Chef but there’s just something that feels nostalgic about Johns Plaice. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by smiling waitresses who showed us to a table and brought us menus promptly, the menus by the way are huge! There’s a wide range of food here, not just fish and chips! I ordered a ham roll with chips and gravy, my partner ordered an egg mayo sandwich with chips and gravy, she got told there was no egg mayo left so she went for a tuna sandwich instead. The food was all really tasty, big portion sizes too! My ham roll was filled with thick, good quality ham and the bread was soft, my chips and gravy were good too - just very filling! My partner enjoyed her food too and we both left with happy bellies after a good feed on our way home. There’s ample parking here and they also offer takeaway which is great for if you just need a quick bite.

Fantastic place. Very good portion sizes and excellent value for money. The owner, John & family are absolutely amazing hosts and nothing is any trouble. I’d recommend paying a visit.

A chippy restaurant that also does takeaway we went for dinner (sit in) was really nice friendly staff quick service good portions and great food well worth a visit and ideal location for a stop off if going out to west Cumbria 5 star

We like this cafe. Staff so helpful snd friendly. Fish batter is outstanding - really crispy. I had my fish with a full salad and no chips (though you can have salad as a side). Salad crisp and fresh. Visited twice in one week! Recommended to book.

This place is the BEST chippy ever. If your ever passing you need to try... everything on the menu is delicious you definitely won't be disappointed

My wife and I made a special trip to have fish and chips here after passing it lots of times and saying “we must give it a try” On arrival at about 16.45 last Friday and upon sitting down we were asked for our order within 2 mins. We said we were still looking but 60 seconds later the waitress was asking again trying to rush us. The fish and chips we ordered arrived quickly and although fairly pricey, £14.99 each, they were delicious. Hot and tasty thank you. However, with food still in my mouth, last mouthful ,the waitress came cleared the plates away, asking if we wanted dessert straight away. We asked to give us 5 mins but a minute later she was back again asking, we then decided to go due to this. We felt pressured to order, eat up and get out asap from the minute we entered and all the time we were in there we were watched by staff as we are. Neither of us could understand why the staff stood and watched everyone and it made us feel very uncomfortable. It wasn’t even full and there wasn’t a queue?? So, good food but a strange atmosphere making us very uncomfortable

First time I've tried vegan fish and it's great!

Called tonight on our way to the Sands cente at Carlisle. Had pensioners special. Cod chips mushy peas bread and butter and tea. Only £9.95 each. It was delicious. No fat or grease on plate. The chips were crispy on the outside but fluffy and delicious on the inside. The fish was big chunks of soft white fish covered in Beautiful crispy batter. Best fishe and chips ever.

First time here for a number of years. Used to be a regular but I've moved out of the area. Though the food was pleasant enough our visit was spoilt by the very poor service. Waitresses served others before us, (two tables) didn't bother to ask if we wanted desserts. Slapped the bill down..... Basically rude as come be. Shame as I had said to the others as we pulled in how much this was great spot for fish n chips! Needless to say, we won't be back.

Two pensioner"s fish and chips specials for my wife and I and cod fish cakes and chips for my son.... Three empty plates and a very satisfied family. Would not go anywhere else. 👌

Great cod goujons and chips with side salad ,huge portion would have fed 2 people. Couldn't manage all the chips but they very kindly put them in a box for me . Pudding menu fantastic but unfortunately couldn't manage one . On my next trip to Carlisle, will call in for a pudding. Friendly staff.

Very good food pricy but worth it

We are staying on the nearby Crofton Hall caravan site and called in for fish and chips around 5pm. We had the Pensioner's Special which was a perfect size and included bread and butter and a pot oftea. The fish was very fresh. A really lovely meal with excellent service from our waitress. Thank you.

I thought it was Very expensive.AND they charge £1.20 for gravy on the steak pie.! The Fryery is far superior.

Sadly the fish was so oily it was nearly inedible , chips ok . Both our meals spoilt by oil. Very expensive . Avoid , much better quality can be found for half the price .

Stopped off on the way home after being in Carlisle for some shopping. Had the mother in law in tow as well. At 93 she is not particularly mobile and her appetite is not what it was. Having walked in and immediately we were taken straight away to a table. Ordered two pensioners fish specials & one scampi pensioners special - each meal basically £10. The tenner included bread & butter and a pot of tea. So for just shy of £30 a terrific meal. Really hot and sufficient to be satisfying without making you feel stuffed. The outlaw wolfed her scampi down leaving a few peas and a couple of chips. Normally she leaves quite a lot but not this evening - almost unheard of. She really enjoyed her meal. The fish was beautifully cooked and everything about the meal was terrific. Prompt and friendly service as well as excellent cooking. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal.👍😊👌 Thoroughly recommend this place/plaice

Food was fine cod chips sausage chips mushies all ok pricey but I should have known from previous experience my son and I ordered curry sauce!, trust me it's not curry sauce some sort of sweet sauce with sweetcorn and what I assume was raisens luckily we didn't pour all over meal else we would have left the lot, don't assume it's like commonly known Chinese curry sauce I love spicy sauces but this was more of a sweet dessert sauce.

Agree, food is excellent, been here several times and ate in and took away, last nights visit was again good food but dreadful service, plates were taken when some of our party were still eating, got asked to pay twice and felt almost thrown out the door, was busy when we arrived but not when we finished eating, one particular staff member was lacking in customer service, good job the food was good as the service was poor

Great plaice for a good bit of fodder on your travels, they have lots of homemade delights on offer and your traditional fish and chip shop with a twist. There is seating available inside not a huge amount but enough. I'd definitely recommend if your passing to call in and give the food a try.

Seriously this is a chip shop what is with the prices extortionate is the word I'd use 6.95 for cod goujons !!!! What are you thinking? Nearly 3 pounds for a beefburger in batter !!! The prices you are charging I'd expect to see in a pub/restaurant but you are just a chippy And just because you can eat your chips inside does not make this right because eating out should not cost this much. Give your heads a wobble
