I went for an afternoon tea with my family and we had got vouchers through Groupon. We ordered through two different vouchers so confirmed it this morning that we would need them pushed together as well as a high chair which was said to be fine. When we arrived we got sent through to the table and shown us to the table which had 5 chairs and high chair. Deon was very rude and argumentative towards us and said that we needed to pay for the 5th person even though there wasnt a 5th person. We had previously cancelled the 5th person back in January and had prove of this but yet he was still arguing to say we needed to pay because the chef had already made the stuff up. He went off to check but never returned to say that we were actually right and didnt come back to apologise either. The waitress (who we didnt catch her name but was pregnant) was lovely and really made our experience a bit better after his performance. When we were leaving no one checked our vouchers so we checked to see if we needed to show them and was told that it had it sorted already. Wouldn't recommend as it wasnt a very relaxing experience.

We ate here on the meerkat meal card which was 2 for 1, but to be honest I feel the portions were very small and nothing special. Very disappointing. A table spoon of pate quenelle on the plate would be £7.50, surly this was a reduced portion for this offer! A real rip off if this is the real portion size, although the portions should not have been reduced for the offer, it seems they had been. Food not great here. Setting loverly, restaurant very empty no atmosphere. Staff although waiter was trying to be friendly he was very young, clearly he was being guided from afar by the old bar man who lacked customer service and should retire as clearly he is not fit for the service/people industry. Beware the service charge added at end, you must be joking if you think you deserve this! Thank goodness we tried this on an offer and did not pay the full price. Better to find out it’s a bad restaurant on an offer, although I feel we could have been treated as so because of this. Are these offers marketing tools or not? If they are, they do not show you in a good light, don’t bother marketing yourselves.

Lovely view over the lawn and countryside to the horizon. Calm and relaxing. Good value set menu with three choices each of starter, main and dessert. Good selection of drinks from the bar, including cocktails. Attentive service. No complaints!

We arrived just as a wedding party was getting ready for the formal wedding breakfast. Nonetheless we tried ordering a chicken salad for 5 of us with only moderate expectations of either delivery or quality. Both were exceeded: the chicken in our quinoa and parsnip salad was freshly cooked and the salad warm and surprisingly tasty. This wasn't the most charming place I've ever eaten at but if I could have given it 3.5 stars for sheer effort, I would have.

Ok but a little disappointing. Wanted a cocktail before, asked for their "signature gin", on the big menu by reception, they did not have any of the ingredients apart from gin! Food ok but we all thought expensive for what it was.

Wanted a two night break in a decent hotel with my wife after the Xmas festivities. Oped for a premier room. Elcot Park/Newbury is a nice country hotel but lacks 4 star standards. Bedroom was ok, dinner was passable (limited choice) breakfast was excellent. Front of house reception & staff are not what you would expect in a quality hotel. ie : smart dress code. Waiting staff very good and friendly. 2nd day our room never got serviced or received the pre ordered news paper. Overall, disappointing stay, a shame, as the setting is beautiful. I question security, as there is a secondary entrance from the car park which is un-manned and did not appear to have any access code, therefore allowing access to the bed rooms.

Ordered the superfood salad. Extremely disappointing. A completely tasteless £14 plate of lettuce with waterlogged quinoa. No dressing whatsoever. No other ingredients, apart from 12 pumpkin seeds, one teaspoon of beetroot and one teaspoon of goats cheese. Salmon was nice which came with it. Only eat here if you are on your own away from business and can't get to any of the splendid gastropubs bear by.

Popped out to meet a friend staying here on business and decided to have dinner whilst there. Surprisingly good looking menu, all cooked fresh to order and did not disappoint in quality at all. Didn't feel at all like typical hotel food and was pleasant enough to sit outside for the evening and taking in the beautiful surroundings.

The restaurant is located next to the reception and overlooking stunning views of the countryside. The staff were excellent and the food was scrumptious. The place though is rather tired and in need of a bit of investment. The toaster, at breakfast time for example, is an antique and well past its sell by date. Overall though I would happily eat there time and again.

Had a brilliant time at our work Christmas lunch last Monday. The service was exceptional and the staff were very attentive. The food was second to none and was really enjoyable. This is the first time I've been back to the hotel since the refurbishment, and I was very impressed. The full size horse lamp certainly adds quirkiness.I will definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and family.

We stayed in the hotel for two nights and enjoyed breakfast and dinner on both days. Both the service and the food were excellent. The view at breakfast was stunning - a hard frost across the grounds with a deer strolling along by the fence at the bottom. Very relaxing.

Being a holder of a Tastecard we eat out regularly and was pleased to see the Elcot on the list.At reception we were greeted by big smiles,Shown around the hotel and taken to the restaurant. We travel around the UK a lot and stay in many hotels, but are not usually too impressed with the restaurants. On the day we arrived, Friday, we needed a table reservation in the restaurant at very short notice, for four of us. The staff were all absolutely charming and arrangements were made. We had two guests, our daughter and her partner who eat out a lot and if anything are more fussy than we are, so I am pleased to say we were all very impressed..........the quality of the food was excellent, the presentation very attractive, the plates and slate serving plates were actually hot!! ( a real bug bear of husband is cold plates), and service attentive but not intrusive at all. Breakfast also good. The Orangery conservatory where guests dine, is very attractive with beautiful views of the grounds. The hotel room are very spacious and immaculately clean, we did have a very good 'autumn offer' and so were satisfied with what we paid. Our daughter has just moved to Newbury and I am sure this hotel will become one we regularly use.

The Elcot Park has very special memories for me as we have had many family celebrations here over the years. Unfortunately, the last few times we have visited to eat here the food has been of poor quality. Recently, we had a roast lunch in the Orangery and the meal was absolutely dreadful. To their credit they did reduce the bill when they saw the quality of the meat that had been served but it's the final straw for us and sadly we won't be returning until things improve.

This was very nice as we were staying in the hotel and after a long drive, very handy not to have to travel. The food was very nice and the service was good however I would not travel to go again. A little pricey for what was on offer in my opinion. It was fantastic for breakfast.

We enjoyed a lovely weekend at the hotel where we had dinner on our first night. There was a good range of choice and the meal was cooked and served perfectly. Our waiter and waitress were also most friendly.

I've given this a "poor" as for the price and setting the service and quality of the food wasn't really up to the mark. I don't think it's good enough to take nearly an hour to deliver a dish of pasta and a battered fish. Pasta was OK and the fish pretty average. The waiting staff were very apologetic about the wait. We didn't stay and so can't comment on the room quality.

As this is the Mercure's own restaurant and the Newbury Mercure is a fair way from anywhere else, it's fortunate that the general standards are high.I stayed for 2 weeks on business and found the range of breakfast foods was pretty decent in that time. When I ate there in the evening, I received very good service and the food was very good.

Stayed at the hotel for a relaxing weekend. Didn't want to venture far so ate at The Orangery. New staff - uni students on holiday - lacked a bit of training. But we took that in good spirits as everyone was really nice. Food okay but I have eaten better. Menus looked interesting but over the four days some were poorly executed. However, the desserts were very nice - a trio of desserts is clearly all the rage at the moment. Trio of chocolate; trio of apple; were lovely. Apple sorbet was superb. And the apple cheesecake was nice but unusual. Non-uni staff were generally excellent particularly the maitre d' who worked Wednesday to Sunday. Beware, the hotel caters for Weddings and Coach Parties. While weddings are usually sat away from the restaurant the coach parties are not. And they can be very noisy - many are foreign parties and while entertaining on one night it can be a little irritating. Saying that the waiting staff were very attentive and made sure not to forget about us despite the big party. Other guests recommended we try out the Red House which was somewhere local but we were too lazy. Oh by the way, the scenery is lovely. get a seat in the bay window!

Our first time visiting this lounges as we've only been living in Newbury for a year. And I honestly wish we'd come sooner. I didn't catch the name of the lady serving us (dark hair, on shift morning of November 8th) but she was friendly, welcoming and definitely went the extra mile to be a good host. We will absolutely return. Great service. Lovely food and a great atmosphere. Brilliant.
