The Orange Bird in Sheffield

Holy heck. A 5.0 rating after 800 reviews is nothing short of spectacular for anything, but even more so for an eatery. Not only is that score wholly justified, it’s arguably under-marking this place. Just amazing food in a tiny restaurant - we counted 20 covers, which get turned at least once in an evening service. The fact you have to book about a month ahead should tell you all you need to know. Delicious.

Wonderful food and excellent service. The food quality was genuinely exceptional but completely unpretentious. Well worth a visit.

We loved the food and the venue. While the menu is a bit limited we found choices we really enjoyed and will definitely be back.

We really enjoyed our visit on Saturday lunch time. The Humus and Barnsley chop were superb, my partner says her aubergine was fantastic, we both enjoyed the chocolate sorbet, it was thoroughly disgraceful :) The only slight issue, the blood orange lemonade had only passed a slight nod to the blood orange, it could have been a great deal better, but that is a bottled drink so none of your making. We thought the ambiance for us was perfect, I don't like noisy atmospheres, though a little more light where we were sat would have been appreciated. The service was great, friendly and knowledgeable and there was a nice general air of calm in the kitchen. We will be back. We spent £90.

Second time visit and I'm happy to say that the food is as good or even better than ever. The savoury/umami flavours in the aubergine, lamb, chicken, flatbreads, humus....everything in fact, was fantastic. Long may this young chef continue to deliver this unique style of lovely food to people of Sheffield. Its a delight.

The sort of place that will have a Michelin star at some point down the line. Really great food from a well curated menu. Top marks. Can't wait to go back.

Having experienced an evening meal recently, decided to try lunch at the Orange Bird. Menu unchanged from evening meal, but that was pleasing as we were able to continue trying other courses on the menu. The Mamas Flatbread with carrot molasses is brilliant. Sea bream cooked to perfection followed by the miso pudding. A great unpretentious place to enjoy well cooked food.

Small but perfect menu. You can tell they invest time in their limited meal options so they are perfect, rather than a saturated menu of mediocre meals. Also makes choosing your meal much easier. These were our starters. A honey and curry spiced flatbread and hummus

We loved our first experience at the Orange Bird. The food was fabulous. The starters were a meal in themselves we shared the mosbolletjes, mother in law masala flatbread, hummus and chakalaka and would go back for those alone. For mains we had the caramelised aubergine and the braai sea bream with curried chips and morrogo on the side - we loved it all. We had wanted to try all the dessert options but were too full so decided to share the chocolate sorbet between the three of us, we are so glad we did it topped off an incredibly special night and a meal to remember and savour for a long long time.

It’s rare we go out to eat nowadays and feel completely satisfied with all aspects of the experience. The service, food and price were all unbeatable. The aubergine was the showstopper for sure, but the peppermint crisp dessert was also a stand out. Lovely atmosphere, great food. 10/10!

I think I've been every year since it opened, even when it was takeaway chicken in lockdown, and it gets better every time. The Miso Malva might be the best pudding I've ever eaten.

The food was absolutely without fault. Delicious on every count. A lovely welcoming environment with perfect service. Will absolutely be going again. The hummus was the best I've ever had, and the side dish of the greens was outstanding, not just something to add on to the menu but a truly exceptional dish in it's own right. The depth of flavour was amazing.

Another excellent meal at this fabulous restaurant. As there were four of us we managed to order one of everything and enjoyed it all!

Our third visit with friends, and the food is consistently amazing, delicious and well cooked. We tried all the starters, sharing them between us and they are all delicious. A special shout out to the aubergine dish which is amazing, complex layered tastes but still light and so moreish. We have tried all the mains between us now and they are all great. Do book ahead, the restaurant is not large and always full.when we have visited. It has a relaxed vibe and is comfortable and welcoming. A real find and we look forward to exploring different menus over the year.

Absolutely delicious. We’ve had Orange Bird on our ‘must try’ radar for a while and I can only be annoyed with myself we haven’t been sooner. Great atmosphere, attentive friendly service and the food was phenomenal. I don’t say that lightly, absolutely everything was packed with flavour. The food was superb! The flavour and taste was out of this world. I can not wait to return. The staff were attentive and friendly. It was cosy atmosphere, which added to the dining experience.

Really enjoyed our evening for my husbands birthday. Each dish from the starters to dessert were very tasty. I just wish the side portions were slightly bigger and a few other sides to choose from to go with your main dish. We would definitely go back to this lovely comfortable restaurant.

We have been to the Orange Bird many times and it is always excellent. The lime pickle mayonnaise with the chips is even better than what came before.

Unfortunately we were only visiting Sheffield for football so can't visit every week. We weren't sure what to expect as we booked online but I have to say, it's superb and would recommend it to anyone. Do yourself a favour and book it!

Recently visited with my brother whilst on a flying visit to Sheffield. This place had come highly recommended by some friends and I can absolutely say it didn't disappoint. We ordered quite a lot but every plate went back empty. I can't decide if it was the South African cuisine or the wonderful hospitality that was better but if either of these things matter to you then visit and see (taste!) for yourself. Was lovely to hear the story from one of the co-founders and I look forward to returning when I'm next in the area!

Incredible, as always! The sea bream was a particular highlight and of course the peppermint crisp!

The food was amazing. Every dish was delicious. There was only one choice for vegetarians in main dishes but it was so scrumptious neither of the vegetarians in our party minded the lack of choice. My personal favourite was the African greens side dish but literally everything we tried was spicy, aromatic, tasty brilliance. Service was very good. My only real issue was that I asked for a water refill that never came, and it was difficult sometimes to catch the server's eye. But on the whole they were lovely. It's a very small place, only six or seven tables, and it was very comfortable other than the fact that it was a very cold night outside and still quite chilly sitting at a window table as we were. I regretted not keeping my coat with me.

Beautiful flavours in all of the dishes! And equally as wonderful staff looking after us. It really lived up to the expectations and recommendations we had had.

We went to the restaurant as a couple after numerous verbal recommendations about the location. We had a three course meal and thoroughly enjoyed all the food. I would describe the food as excellent, and tasted unique in a very good way. The service was very good and the staff helpful with advice when asked. The location felt cosy and friendly, I will be recommending the restaurant to others. We will definitely be booking to return at some stage.

Taste of home, highly recommend!! Vibrant flavours, Michelin quality food. Nice vibe. Prices not bad but on the higher end as small plates, you end up ordering more dishes…definitely worth it though. Will be returning for sure!

Interesting and lovely lunch menu. All fabulous. Only weird thing was priced excluding vat on the menu. Vat added to final bill. When I asked if that was service I was advised it was vat. Didn't think that was actually legal in England. Anyway, minor element only and the lunch was wonderful.

Blown away with the food. I went for the veggie aubergine: it was unexpected in texture, full of flavour and super filling ! Can't wait to visit again and save a bit of space for the puddings ! For veggies: run don't walk !

This was our second time at the Orange Bird and we were thoroughly impressed yet again. We took my parents out for a birthday meal and everything we had was delicious. I particularly enjoyed the jollof rice as a side and the aubergine. One star knocked off for atmosphere because where we were sat was next to the door and it was very loud. My wife and I look forward to dining at the Bird again in the future, and it's become a sure recommendation to all our friends We spent £168 in total including a bottle of wine between four adults. The meat options are quite expensive but everything else is great value

Went to Orange Bird after receiving several recommendations and it definitely lived up to expectations! The food was phenomenal, we had the aubergine, sea bream, chicken, hummus and peppermint tart. All were incredible, and Eve was a lovely hostess, helping us with recommendations and even answering questions about what was in the sauces etc. Can’t thank the staff enough, we will definitely be coming back! Such a lovely experience at The Orange Bird - Great service and delicious food, all made with quality ingredients. Will definitely look to return, this time to try the steak which was sold out when we went! Highlights:- - Peri Peri chicken (so juicy, a must order) - Aubergine starter (but make it a large) - Flatbreads with carrot mollasses Only criticism I'd say is in general the spice levels are quite mild (for our palette), but understand SA cuisine may not have the same punchy spice flavours as other regions.

Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Welcoming, helpful staff. We shared everything. All the dishes were outstanding, perfectly cooked and full of delicious flavours that wowed our palates. It’s only small so you need to book well in advance. Highly recommend it, looking forward to our next visit already!

We love the Orange Bird! We had a wonderful, chilled evening with friends and as usual, the food was fresh, unique and totally delicious. Service was brilliant and relaxed and we felt very well looked after and treated. Thank you once again.

We have been to this restaurant quite a few times now, sometimes taking visiting family & friends. They and we cannot praise this restaurant, the food and the team working there, highly enough. It is consistently truly exceptional.

A fantastic introduction to this fabulous local restaurant. I have been trying for months to get a table. I now know why. Not too many covers make this an intimate dining experience with a warm informality that puts you instantly at ease. We dined with friends and ordered the whole menu to sample dishes we haven't experienced anywhere else - the flavours of S. Africa in N.W Sheffield! Our hostess and co-founder was superb, recommending wines and keeping the yummy food flowing from starters to mains to desserts - we experienced it all and there was not a bad / disappointing dish to be found! Needless to say we will return and look forward to introducing others to Orange Bird.
