What a fabulously warm welcome from hosts Andrew and Karen. I live fairly local, but this was our first trip into the yew tree, what a beautiful pub, super friendly, and we just popped in for a pint and some nuts! But ended up staying for an impromptu Sunday lunch!!! Wow!! So good!!! Fabulous roast beef and chicken with lots of trimmings, just like me man used to make!! Tons of gravy too!!!! They accommodated our daughters dietary requirements, in that they did a smaller plate of roast for her! Great value and great beer too, will definitely be heading back for more!!! Thank you so much for making us fee so welcome !!!!

Stepping into The Old Tree Inn feels like taking a delightful trip back in time to an era when pubs were the heart of the community. Andrew, the landlord, embodies the spirit of hospitality, welcoming every guest with genuine warmth. You can’t help but feel right at home among the friendly locals and charming atmosphere. The Sunday lunch here is nothing short of superb. The roast is cooked to perfection, with tender meat and all the trimmings you could wish for. Each bite is a comforting reminder of traditional home-cooked meals, and the portions are generous enough to leave you happily satisfied. What adds to the charm of The Old Tree Inn is the occasional celebrity spotting, but it’s the regulars who truly make this place special. There’s a sense of camaraderie and conversation that invites you to linger a little longer. If you’re looking for a pub that captures the essence of community, great food, and a warm atmosphere, look no further than The Old Tree Inn. Whether you’re a local or just passing through, it’s a gem that’s well worth a visit!

My husband and I went here for Sunday lunch. What a charming place - the village it sits in is beautiful and the charm carries through into this little gem. An old pub with a warmth of its own. This is further helped by its welcoming hosts and the friendliness of other regular clientele. The food was delicious - with plentiful sides - we had the beef, great quality and very tasty. The usual roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, stuffing and then each person given seperate portion of mashed potato, carrots, cabbage and delicious cauliflower cheese. All were very generous in portion, so much so we were unable to partake of desserts - An excuse to go back for more 🙂. Would definately recommend - one to visit.

The people who run it are super lovely and the sunday lunch is very nice. Ate there again a couple of weeks ago- large home cooked portions, yummy cauliflower cheese, beef a bit dry but fine with some gravy of which there was plenty. Main issue with the pub is that it's unreliable. often not serving food. currently just friday and sunday. We've called in so many times and been told no food today. such a shame as we used to be regulars.

I went with Michelle for Sunday lunch and had a lovely traditional homemade lunch with all the trimmings. Even though we had a starter as well we couldn’t resist the homemade deserts (these change all the time and freshly made by Karen). We were well and truly podged!! I recommend this pub for a good pub-grub meal, especially if you need somewhere dog-friendly.While in the area on business, my wife and I called into this pub on a Friday evening after having driven past it earlier in the day. It's a typical village pub, a bit worn looking and not very well laid out. The bar area is a bit of a tight squeeze although there are seated areas just off the bar. It's clean, warm and welcoming. The bar staff are friendly and efficient.I had a steak and ale pie with chips and peas, my wife had steak with peppercorn sauce, chips and salad. Both meals were excellent, tasty and hot. Food and bar prices are reasonable. The Guinness was good.

We made a last minute decision on a Tuesday evening to pop out for dinner and have been meaning to try this place for ages. We arrived to a friendly greeting from the landlord who took our drinks order. As expected on a Tuesday it was relatively quiet with only a few other people in so we had the pick of seats. As a vegetarian it’s nice to find good old fashioned options on the menu, veggie lasagne, Penang vegan curry, broccoli and cream cheese bake, and 3-4 other options. It’s not a “trendy” menu, rather it’s a good, solid pub menu with lots of choice. We ordered steak pie, chips and veg and the broccoli and cheese bake, chips and veg. I can’t fault the food, it was presented beautifully and was really tasty, there was plenty of it and we both really enjoyed it. The pie was high quality and came with loads of gravy in a jug, as was the broccoli bake, the chips were great (which is rare nowadays) and the veg cooked perfectly. We immediately commented that we will come again.Other things we liked about the pub, it’s dog friendly although we didn’t take ours that evening, there’s a little courtyard area with sofas to sit outside on a nice day and the whole pub was kept very clean. There was also a good selection of ales and my Sauvignon Blanc was a good quality wine. There are two good pubs in the village both serving good food and offering something distinctly different to each other and we really like both for different reasons. The yew tree has the edge when it comes to personal service in a characterful old pub, the hearty nature of the menu, good portion sizes and price. It would be nice to think both pubs can succeed in this lovely village.

Four of us went today Saturday evening meal, it has been a while since we called for something to eat here and didn't expect to get in as when we have been before it's been busy, the meals have been perfect so this is why I suggested visiting again, so you can imagine when we arrived to find the bar empty and having to wait to be served as nobody was around I wondered what had happened, no more lovely waitresses to welcome us or sit us down, we ordered our meals the starters were garlic mushrooms in a creamy sauce with toast, well it arrived and looked awful it was very runny and fatty on top, looked like sick, so left it and ate my toast, the main I choose was cheese and potato pie, the man said chips and veg so I said yes please, and two in our group had chilli and one fish pie, well my pie had four big chunks of potato and a spoonful of some sort of cheese sauce, no chips and carrots and peas, the chilli looked anaemic no colour to it and have been told had no flavour!! My partner had fish pie which was a load of mash with hard bits of fish and no sauce inside, absolutely would not eat here again, it was totally rubbish, the place has gone from being a vibrant busy pub with excellent food to the most awful I've ever stepped foot in, I'm fairness the fella didn't charge us for the fishpie but made the excuse it was the end of the batch!! Even if it was the end of the batch it still shud have had some sauce inside!!! Won't be returning, you definitely need a new chef and a better menu

This one was so fresh and tasty it could almost have come from mum's kitchen! A couple sitting adjacent to us said they eat at the Yew Tree at least once, but probably twice, a week! We found this pub purely by chance - arriving just 5 minutes before 1400 hrs when they stop serving food. We were welcomed with open arms, offered all the menus with a smile and we took a seat by the dying fire - which was immediately revived with some logs and coal. The menu was great and they even had a full gluten free menu. We settled on the vegetable curry with chips or naan and it arrived quickly and was very tasty. And the chips are gluten free being cooked in their own fryer. What a treat! The ambience is great - a genuine pub serving genuine pub food. I wish I lived nearby because I would be there often. Sadly I live over 2 hours away but when I am next in the area I will seek out this lovely pub.

This used to be a very good pub. Over the years and through several changes of ownership it has lost its vitality. In the past it was packed with beer drinkers and food eaters, now it is usually virtually deserted. We had Sunday lunch as part of a largish group and it failed at every level. The service was appalling. Some people were still waiting for the main course while others had finished. I wanted some cauliflower cheese - that arrived after I had finished eating. The food was mediocre. My 'roast' pork was nothing of the sort. It tasted and looked as though it had been bought ready sliced and simply warmed up in the microwave.

The Old Yew Tree Inn at South Wingfield is a traditional village pub that has a good selection of ales that also serves delicious food. We called in on a weekday lunchtime. Our last visit was for the Sunday roast dinner. Since then the management has changed and the food is as good now as it was then. We had steak, ale & mushroom pie with proper chips, vegetables and gravy. Our meals were nicely presented and beautifully cooked from fresh ingredients. The pies were delicious… full of tender steak, mushrooms and very tasty gravy with a lovely short crust pastry that was a “proper” pie with top, sides and bottom. They definitely were not the usual meat in a dish with a pastry topping you get in a lot of pubs these days. Well worth a visit to this historical pub with friendly landlord and staff, highly recommended.

Read the reviews about this pub and decided to try The Old Yew Tree Inn, but unfortunately, our experience turned out to be somewhat different to everyone else's. I can only think that the cook must have had the evening off on Saturday night. We ordered a variety of meals, but not one of them was good. The thick cut chips were cold and not cooked, peas cold, and creamy chicken curry didn't bear any resemblance to any chicken curry I have ever seen. I was very upset as it was my treat for the family.I understand from the locals, that the pub has recently changed hands, but that shouldn't be an excuse. In retrospect, I should have complained at the time, and really wish I had done so.Hopefully, things will improve very soon!

Stopped in for some Lunch after a family walk. Food was lovely and they were very accommodating. The two ladies who dealt with us were great with the kids and the portions were just right. Will definitely be returning.

We dropped in to the Old Yew Tree for the first time ever at lunchtime on a cold November Friday. We were warmly welcomed and the beer was good. We only wanted a sandwich, but it was perfect! We will definitely come back, it is a handy distance to walk from our house in Belper, and it is open at lunch time Wednesday to Sunday. It's on the list!

Needed a Sunday lunch for family on the way back from a walk in the area, and called in hoping that they still had food on at 4pm. Well they certainly did! The four of us had a really tasty (and quickly served) roast dinner, washed down with a quality real ale, and followed by some lovely deserts. The service was second to none, the beer and wine excellent, and we all agreed the food made it our new favourite sunday lunch pub. We will be back soon :)

the pub is very traditional with a nice fire. The staff are friendly and very helpful. They are good with children - our five year old really enjoyed his food. Our meals were very tasty and good value. We were staying at a B&B nearby who recommended this pub and we were very pleased with the meal.

Lovely Sunday lunch!! Served quickly by the lovely Joy, she always has a smile for everyone. Food was piping hot with a tasty selection of veg & a nice piece of beef. 3 sized plates to pick from, my husband only just managed to finish a large plate! Definitely worth a visit. Best to book though ☺

This is still a very traditional pub, homely and welcoming.Seven of us had a great meal with good, reasonably priced food and friendly service. The staff, especially the waitress, Joy, go out of their way to make sure that everyone is happy. A lovely, snug pub in winter.

In the area on business and thought I would give the meals a try as I had been there for a drink before. The staff are a delight, helpful, polite and efficient. The menu all be it a bit limited does cater for most tastes. The food I had was basic, but well cooked, wholesome and delicious. You can't ask much more from a country pub and was very reasonably priced.

I live in Hong Kong but return to the U.K. to visit my parents who live nearby South Wingfield two or three times a year. The Old Yew Tree Inn is a perennial favourite. On my last trip (July and August 2016) we ate here four times in total. I love it. My parents think its great. And my eight-year-old boy and his nine-year-old friend who came with us from Hong Kong thought it was 'awesome'. What more can you say. Great food. Lovely ambience. Wonderful, friendly staff. Please visit and support keeping wonderful places like this open, It's a gem.

We have just returned from a lovely few hours at The Old Yew Tree Inn. Fantastic, home cooked traditional food with great wine and good company from the staff and the landlady. We really enjoyed eating there and will be back again very soon - nice to go somewhere that values exactly what hearty, good food pub should be.

Called in after watching the fireworks. Very disorganised. Long wait then they messed up our order. Average chips and tasteless peas. Wouldn’t recommend.

Food was awful, the fish tasted like charcoal but was gooey inside it really wasn’t good. Kids meals were burnt, staff were really rude especially the 2 blonde members of staff. Stood complaining about the fact we complained right infront of us. I’ve never visited anywhere where the staff have been so rude I definitely would avoid. Steaks were ok if you don’t mind a bit of jaw ache after visiting, coleslaw smelt off and tasted even worse. Safe to say we didn’t stay for puddings. Staff took no responsibility for the awful food!
