Just visited the Old Stable carvery having seen some press coverage in the Mercury. Saturday lunch time, not too busy but I guess it's still early days. They offer 3 size of plates at £5.99, £7.99 and £9.99. We all had the medium size which was ample for us. I had the last slices of the roast beef joint and it was nicely cooked, not over done, so I'm sure would have been even better when first carved. My wife and her friend had the turkey and pork and said they were good too. Plenty of vegetables to choose from, parsnips, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower cheese, peas, beans and carrots as well as roast potatoes, sausages and Yorkshire pudding. We'll definitely return and wish the owners well for the future.

This is a new establishment and has only been open a short while so we thought we'd give it a try. The building is an old stone built stable block with a bar on the ground floor and a restaurant on the first floor. The decor is rather bland but pleasant enough; in the restaurant, there is not much room between the tables, meaning that you can struggle to get past people at other tables and we can all hear each others conversations! The waitress was friendly, took our orders for drinks and left us with the ticket for a medium carvey meal - BTW, they can't spell "medium" on the ticket! According to the leaflet, carvery meals come in 3 sizes priced at £6, £8 and £10 approx. We went over to the carvey and found roast beef, pork and turkey on offer; the chef carving the meat was pleasant and answered any questions we had. There was a good array of vegetables with 2 sorts of parsnips - roasted and with a sweet chilli sauce - very nice. There was also pork crackling and sauages, plus of course, Yorkshire puddings! The condiments to go with the food weren't ready (even though the place had been open for 20 minutes or so) so we had to go back for the horseradish sauce, mustard and so on; take care when walking back to your table as there is a step up to the seating area! We noticed that the vegetables were only warm and by the time we were halfway through our meal, they were cold! We pionted this out to the waitress who said she would tell the chef but didn't make any to offer to get us a dish of fresh hot vegetables. The beef was OK if a little overcooked and seemed to be a little dry. There were only 4 puddings/sweets on offer and both the cheesecake and sticky toffee pudding came with slightly warmed custard. With a carvery, it is essential to keep the waiting food hot and this certainly wasn't the case here. The vegetables were well cooked but not hot and weren't helped by the fact that the plate for your food was also only just warm, hence my marking of the food as poor. Will I go back - not very likely!

I came in for a carvery with my sister and friend. We all had the medium size carvery and wow there was a lot of yummy food. The choice of veggies was brilliant and sooo much meat. 2 of us had the vegan option and were not disappointed at all we had loads to choose from. Staff were really welcoming especially Kym. Would def recommend and will be going back again 😃🍴

This is a basic old fashioned pub, but in a nice way, with a good selection of beer. The food is a selection of pub classics and sandwiches. All are excellent quality and value but beware. The portions are large! Staff were very friendly

As one might guess going from my profile picture, I'm a keen motorcyclist. Unfortunately motorcyclist and 'biker' are synonymous so when searching for new places to go and, in particular, new rest stops it becomes necessary to search the interweb for "biker cafes". I did this very thing yesterday, being at a loose end and fancying a ride to somewhere I've never been before, but without doing the whole 200 miles for fish & chips thing. So I punched "biker cafes" into Google and one of the places it suggested was The Bike Shed Cafe, next to the George Inn, just off the Gordano services exit of the M5. Suited up, I headed out for a pleasant enough ride and eventually stopped at The Bike Shed Cafe. With it being a bank holiday I fully expected it to be heaving with bikers, erm, sorry, motorcyclists. On arriving, though, there was only one other bike in the car park. As I was taking off my gloves and helmet the other guy on a motorbike approached his bike, as he was just leaving. We had a few minutes chat and a laugh among one another that we'd both done the same thing; asked Google to suggest a new place and had ended up here. As it happens, The Bike Shed Cafe caters more for your outdoorsy types and looking at the rack of mountain bikes just outside, the penny finally dropped that motorcyclists aren't quite the demographic they were targeting when this brainchild was first born into this world. The other guy and myself had a bit of a chuckle about that. However, my amusing (or not) anecdote about how I found this little place aside, let's get to the good stuff. Because good it absolutely is, and in reality I don't suppose they care whether you turn up on a motorcycle, a mountain bike or on horseback, we all spend the same money after all. The Bike Shed Cafe is a small annexe next to the George Inn. One presumes they are mutually affiliated. There is ample parking and being on the main road it is not difficult at all to find. The Bike Shed itself is a small outbuilding at the end of the carpark with a pleasant decked area adjacent for outdoor seating. It all looks and feels quite modern and well thought out. Inside I was greeted by a couple of nice young ladies who took my order and brought it out to me. The coffee was quite excellent - let's be honest, even in a world where it is impossible to throw a tea bag without hitting a coffee shop, really good coffee is not that common. I'm pleased to report that my americano with oat milk was at least a 9/10. On display at the counter was a vast selection of sweet cakey things which looked so tempting, but I'm trying to lose weight so I did my best to resist, but it was touch and go! I also ordered a cheese and chilli jam toastie, and again I was impressed with my choice. The bread was nice and thick and the cheese was oozing out of the sandwich so there was no skimping on any of the ingredients. Unfortunately, my diet was put on hold a bit yesterday after all! It came with a bitter green garnish of salad, but a few crisps on the side in addition would not have been unwelcome. Overall, though, it was most excellent and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this little coffee stop to anyone. It's highly unlikely but I hope my review gets enough attention from the motorcycle community to make this place a different kind of Bike Shed and next time I stop by there are a couple of dozen 'bikers' enjoying coffee and toasties in the bank holiday, ahem, sun.
