Amazing well kept ales. Bass and Hook Norton Table Beer were on when we visited. Fabulous friendly service. I've passed this pub loads of times and not stopped. Today we drove past it and made the effort to call in. OMG, stupid me for not calling in before..the best kept beer for miles around. Also as a brilliant bonus, Phipps Ales in bottles are on sale behind the bar, they were really really good. We will definitely return and bring some friends. 5 stars isn't enough..

An absolutely cracking wet trade pub, some excellent beers being served at their best. Very cosy, friendly place with a fire. Should be noted that it doesn't do food though there is a cafe next door. Pic is the view from the doorway.

Pub re-opened this weekend under the new Landlord Jake. Open, friendly village pub that draws a local crowd. The focus is on quality beer served well. Pretty little front bar with a real fire going. Local breweries like Hook Norton and Phipps' were on tap. All the best to them.

Terrible, nice enough looking pub but it was as if it was too much effort to serve me & no food available. Lucky to get one star.

Lovely village pub with a warm welcome, quirky rooms, good food and outside seating space: all set in a beautiful village where the church opposite does afternoon teas on a Sunday! Thoroughly recommended!

We visited as part of an organised trip but it is somewhere where I would like to return to again. The food we had was very nice and the bar looked well stocked but because I was driving I was not able to partake

Proper pub. Turned up half eight hoping for food after long day. Kiitchen had closed but fired back up for us. Everyone friendly, even though we were very not local. Couldn't ask for more.

What can I say, we turned up late on a Sunday night after a bike ride and they opened the kitchen and cooked us food, me scampi and chips and my girlfriend fish and chips. Never had a pub don't this before and so grateful. We were outside on the tables so didn't get the chance to really see inside aside apart from when ordering but was friendly inside, locals with dogs seemed happy to chat. Would recommend.

Called in for a light meal == UPDATE - February, 2025 == This is an odd one. Once upon a time, this was a very nice country pub / restaurant / hotel. Then it closed for ages. Then it re-opened as an upmarket hotel / restaurant. As at Feb 2025, it is closed for refurbishment, due to re-open as a "transformational healing centre" ... what the hell is that ?!?! As at Feb 2025, there is no date for when this will re-open.

I know some people like their chips to be dark brown in colour, but probably more prefer a lighter golden brown. My mum always used to do dark brown. However, is there a preference for the colour of the fish batter? I haven't heard that there is. For me the important thing is that the batter should be golden brown and crispy not soggy. Read on to find out why I started with this introduction to my review. Last night I had fish and chips in the Butchers Arms and the fish batter was a bit too dark/overcooked, although it wasn't as bad as it looked. A friend asked if I needed a chisel to eat it, but no I didn't. It was very crispy, in fact a bit too crispy. I personally prefer mushy to garden peas with fish and chips. The chips and tartare sauce were nice. A slice of lemon would have been a nice finishing touch. The price was £17. The service was a bit slow for the main course, but to be fair there was a large private birthday party upstairs. If they had brought my meal out a bit quicker, maybe the batter would have been just right😆. The deserts are a bit pricey, but this seems to be normal these days. I had cheese cake, which was £8. The menu is a bit limited, but after COVID this seems to have happened in several pubs. I did fancy the steak, but could not afford the price of £30. There was a vegan option on the menu which suited my wife. She enjoyed her chickpea ragout, although thought her meal was lacking carbs. Normally this dish would be served with something like pasta. On this, my first visit to the Butchers Arms, I can only give a rating of 3/5 because the fish batter was overcooked and the service was a bit slow. The Ragout also could do with being served with pasta (preference), or rice or bread for some carbohydrates or at least have this as an option. Despite all of the above, the Butchers is certainly still worth 3 stars because it is a nice friendly pub, including dogs being allowed in the bar and garden, and the ales I drank were all in excellent condition and 2 out of the 3 were local ones and below £5, which is good to see. I would certainly recommend to drinkers of real ales, and would give them another try for food.

We visited GWA again a couple of weeks ago for dinner with my family to celebrate a couple of wins for our family. We arrived and it was so cold outside but the pub was warm and welcoming and smelt like a pub if that makes sense? Seated immediately (had a reservation) and shortly after ordered our drinks, waiter was knowledgeable about the drinks/beers offered and was very friendly. Some of the party ordered starters and these arrived quickly and were very hot and yummy, a member of our party wanted to keep some of her starter to go with her main which staff happily allowed Again the staff were great with bringing the mains, which were, as always incredible! Fresh and delicious! When it came to dessert staff made recommendations and helped us choose. When the bill arrived they offered to split it if needed. Amazing food, decent prices (higher end of standard) and ability to do take away if items are left! Will definitely be back again!
