Lovely traditional pub. We had a fantastic welcome from the land lady..They don't serve food but we were allowed to take food from the chip shop next door. Really dog friendly. They have live music at weekends. We will definitely make a return visit.

This has been closed the last view times we've been in the area but it was great to see it open! Lovely pub with great staff. They brought their adorable spaniel out so I could have a stroke! For that they should get 10 out 5 stars! Decent size rooms, and the roof terrace gives a good view to have a nosey at what's going on, and from here you would be able to hear the live music from The Albert. They also offer live music themselves, but sadly we visited after it had finished.

What a great pin! They always have brilliant singers on and the atmosphere is fab. The singer on Friday the 28 June was brilliant. Everyone in the pub joined on singing and dancing. Can’t wait to return. Our favourite bar.

I wish we had found this little pub at the beginning of our stay!! The owner is so friendly and she made our pug Fraser feel lovely and comfortable. A good variety of drinks at a reasonable price! We will return on our next visit. Thank you!

A load of friends came up to Windemere to celebrate a friends birthday and we came to this pub and had a fab time on both the Friday and Saturday nights. A very friendly couple managing the pub, everyone had an excellent time. When we come back we’ll definitely come back

The John Peel has had a makeover since we last visited and we were looked after by the manager all 47 of us for a couple of hours on a wet Friday afternoon. We was all in fancy dress and had a great time

Fantastic too see this classic pub is re open with a friendly welcome under new management. Great atmosphere, plenty of selection and fantastic service. Good luck to Claire and Glen who I have no doubt will make this pub the best in bowness. Live entertainment fantastic!!

Fabulous night on the 14th Oct. Had a few drinks at this traditional pub and we watched an awesome live band called Llama LLama and the atmosphere was brilliant definitely worth a visit!

We ate here on recommendation from a friend. The food was about 50% cheaper than other pubs in Bowness. A traditional pub. Clean & friendly staff. The meals were lovely though not a massive portion so we had a pudding too. Still cheaper than the rest of town including a dessert! Recommended

Just back from a 2 night break. We visited this pub and have to say it’s fantastic, the open fire, the fantastic owner and many beers to choose from. Dog friendly also has a pool table and darts board. Great terrace upstairs for the summer months! Highly recommended for its great atmosphere 👍

At the moment the Old John Peel is not able to provide food but you can were permission take a take a way in. The staff are brilliant and helpful and very clean pub. Food is hoping to be on again in October so hopefully some more delicious food will be served.

Stopped in here for a drink as husband wanted to watch a football match (which was on sky sports & not available on normal digital channels) No food available but they allowed you to bring in take away. ( which we noticed some folks did) Drinks fair priced for town centre.

Spending the weekend in Windermere, we popped in to Bowness on Windermere for a bite to eat and there are many options available, and although out of season things were pretty busy so consequently we tried several places but decided to try elsewhere due to queues and people and staff faffing around. We then came across The Old John Peel, which from the outside is very unappealing, however on entering the pub we were warmly greeted by the landlord and the place was absolutely spotless with a real old charm to it (including log fire), which is in stark contrast to the outside. The fare is relatively simple but very fresh. we also took advantage of the beer garden as it was a lovely day for the time of year. The beer garden is a great people watching platform and decorated really well with plenty of seating, a covered area and some excellent touches such as blankets, cushions and wall heaters. We are so glad we ignored the exterior and popped in as we had a great afternoon. So don't make the mistake of judging this book by the cover, pop in you'll be glad you did.

We popped in here for some lunch and to escape the rain. We did try a couple of other places that looked more appealing but they had big notes on the doors saying cash only and we only had card so opted for here. Ordered...

Having walked in a few lovely pubs for a bite to eat we came across this pub. We were hungry, wet and thirsty. The waiter was rude to people who only came in for a drink and sent them downstairs to the drinks only area....

This pub was super friendly, all the staff were very helpful, but Paul and Saheem were outstanding! Paul organised us to have half portions of the wedges as he did point out they were very large. Wine delightful and they serve real ale!!

The Food, Wine and Staff were really good nothing was too much trouble. It has a nice feel about the place. With thie Covid-19 going on you felt safe. The staff cleaned everything down when people left the tables.

Traditional bar just off the main tourist area, arrived for dinner, details taken and allocated a table. Ordered our drinks and food at the bar, quickly served. Staff friendly, wifi available plus meals arrived as ordered. Steak and ale pie plus stilton and vegetable crumble, very filling!

It was nice and quiet when the town was heaving. We were seated straight away, away from other guests, on any table we wanted. They have loads of beers on tap and a well stocked bar. The staff were exceptional. I have an odd drink order and they did it for me straight away. The tables were quickly cleaned between guests. The food was incredible. The burger was better than any I’ve had in a steak restaurant and very good value for money. The bar staff made detailed and knowledgeable recommendations to other guests. 100/10. The best pub we’ve walked into in years.

We stopped in for lunch. The staff took our details for track and trace, we were directed to sit at a table with a menu. My wife and I both have an egg intolerance and when ordering the server went away and spoke to the chef, she then came back with a list of foods we could eat, very thoroughly done! The toilets were very clean and tidy. Overall, great service and good food. The burgers, sausage and mash as well as ploughman’s were all lovely.

Limited offering of spirits, wine, ales, etc but enough for anyone to be able to select a drink. The food menu is very pub grub type of food.Dog friendly as all a bar space despite serving pub grub and the dogs are friendly everywhere. I ordered a lamb stew and dumplings with mash. Lamb was cooked perfectly so it fell apart and the dumpling had amazing savoury flavours. Proper pub grub food Messy Nessi - fish and chips with mushy peas - nice fish and chips but don't understand why the salad that came with it

Plenty of space in this large old pub. We were a group of 7 and managed to find a table. A good selection of ales available with a good menu and specials board. The food was good, nothing special but nothing wrong with it either. Would go again.

We wandered in on a Saturday night and the place was cosy and friendly. The place needs to be refreshed but it was a quality night didn’t eat there and don’t think I would, but lots of people were. The atmosphere was food met some nice people to have a chat with and it’s dog friendly. My advice is try it yourself and don’t just go off reviews!

Gran cerveza y un ambiente encantador, tuve el pescado y las patatas fritas y mi esposa tenía gambas y patatas fritas ambos eran excelentes. Este lugar tiene mucho carácter y produce comida tan buena como cualquier otro lugar en Bowness, las cervezas que se ofrecen también son muy buenas.

Busy town so went in on the off chance hope it be good... we were not disappointed good service ,nice staff, bit tired decor but it work for character pub and is a busy place so will wear quick. Our meal was not small and well cook so highly recommend to have a meal.

Si, una ensalada.La hamburguesa transcurrió sin incidentes, nuevamente una hamburguesa congelada, servida en un panecillo de hamburguesa de dos tonos con aspecto de jazz, papas fritas congeladas y una ensalada ... .... 10 ish ... . pobre en el mejor de los casos.Lugares como este capitalizan a través de Fayre y turistas. No había suficiente personal en turno para hacer frente a la demanda en este día ocupado y el menú era demasiado variado y grande para que ellos pudieran hacer frente a la demanda. La calidad (si alguna vez hubo una) se ve comprometida ya que la comida era lamentable y los precios que pagamos eran exorbitantes por lo que nos sirvieron.Nunca volvería a comer allí, no estoy buscando comentarios y no habría evitado hablar con alguien ese día si pensara que hubiera hecho una diferencia.No se me ocurre ninguna razón que justifique que se les sirva comida tan pobre, a un ritmo tan lento, a tal precio.Una experiencia tan pobre que se logró constantemente durante toda la visita.No hay nada positivo que agregar.

Had lamb Sunday dinner with proper mint sauce and all the veg washed down with a pint . Other half had the burger with chips and couple of glasses of wine . Top honest pub grub at reasonable prices for the lakes.

Myself, my son and his dog visited Bowness 22nd-24th November. We hoped to find a friendly (and dog friendly) warm, comfortable, not too noisy, reasonably priced place to have an evening meal. We called in first to check we didn't have to book (being a Saturday) and the friendly barman told us no, but it would be safer to go earlier rather than later. On our return we found the pub to be busy, but not too busy, toasty warm, nice atmosphere, friendly staff, and above all the food was great! I had Scampi and a generous wine, my son had Cheesy Garlic Bread, a Burger and a beer. The prices were very reasonable and we couldn't fault the food. All in all, a very nice pub, just what we hoped to find. We will definitely eat here again on our next visit.

Situated next to the Flying Pig, this is a much quieter pub and suited us more than having to stand amongst too many people in the pub next door. Reasonable drinks prices, a bit rough around the edges perhaps but giving it that old English pub feel. We didn't eat here, but the menu is good and offers a good selection of dishes for all tastes.

Among all the up and coming modern drinking holes that are dotted around Bowness - this gem of a pub remains traditional, unspoilt and a quiet option away from the crammed modern wine bars. Good wholesome food at prices that are affordable, won't rip you off - excellent value for money.

Been many times before and never fails to deliver. Good old homemade food... Steak & ale pie which we could eat over and over again. Lovely and healthy portion of scampi too... Thanks and will be back again x

Hemos visitado anteriormente y realmente disfrutamos de una bebida y comida, pero cuando estuvimos allí la semana pasada, los precios de los alimentos eran mucho más altos y el menú tenía menos variedad. Comimos pero fue decepcionante, pedí una chaqueta de papa pero la ensalada no era comestible y parecía marchita.

Sticky tables, offhand staff, generally grubby feel to the place. For what we paid there are much nicer places to eat. Only went in because they have a notice saying they're dog friendly.. Wouldn't return

burger and a pepporoni pizza for two....burger shop bought not even 1/4 pounder, chips cold...pizza burnt and chewy base...chips the same...all for £20 ...avoid absolute rubbish...

I took four family members here for a meal..and on entering the pub I asked a diner who had just eaten " how was the food " and their reply put me at ease. Well they were right the food was restaruant quality. We ordered different meals, my Fish & Chips was huge and delisouce, so were all the other meals we ordered. Kitchen was a bit slow due to the huge demand for food and is deffo worth the walt. Tried eating there recently and couldnt get a table. "bugger"

Visited this lovely local pub a few days ago whilst staying in Bowness. The food was fantastic and you could really tell that it was homemade! Very reasonably priced as well and fantastic service. I would highly recommend.

Average place for the area, but not a negative, it’s just like most. Little grittier pretty basic. Cask ale, nice enough people working there. Feels a little sleepier than most, but I was there in an odd time. Clean, decent prices and not much more that stood out.

Visited Thursday 28th Aug The food was very bad we had a pork pie and a cheese plowman's and a sausage and chips they must have gone out of there way to buy the cheapest ingredients it was inedible everything tasted horrible none of us ate our meal. The staff were rude waited to order for 5 minutes while two male members of staff were sorting out beer pump did not even look at me or say anything after ordering food was told to collect my knives and forks from behind when I said there is none was told what do I expect they had a large party in

Barperson took our order one handed whilst holding their other hand over their mouth for most of the time.

Great food great beer and dog friendly all me and the wife need, we payed this pub a visit while on holiday in the lakes and wasn’t disappointed, although a little dingy and very oldy worldy looking, the wife had the beef in ale pie and was superb, very tasty, I had the sirloin steak which was served with chips onion rings and mushrooms but that was it, no salad garni or peas and I do like some colour with my meal, but, that aside the meal was delicious, we shall definitely return

Mientras estábamos en Windermere para unas vacaciones, los dos llamamos a este pub para tomar unas copas, después de ver que se entregaban numerosos pedidos de comida, decidimos ir por la (famosa parrilla de la granja) + la carne casera y la tarta de cerveza. Como cualquier consumidor de carne propondría normalmente. . . . ¿La carne debe servirse rara a media? . Desafortunadamente cuando se presentó este pedazo de carne, ¡esto habría roto los dientes de un gran tiburón blanco! . Cuando me enfrenté al amable caballero del bar y lo confirmé con la cocina, me informaron que esta parrilla se sirve en una sartén. . . . . por lo tanto esto se cocina a la salida. . ? ¿Seguramente esto no tiene el poder de los satans eructos para condenar un bistec a toda una vida de una bota rústica? . Mientras lidiaba con esto, me informaron que no solo era veg. . . . prometió ser fresco, esto fue conservado, a través de Asda por la carretera. Aunque nuestra mala experiencia con la comida, las bebidas y la personalidad del bar fue genial! .

Este es un verdadero pub inglés "antiguo" que sirve excelente comida de pub y cervezas bien conservadas. El menú en sí es lo que se esperaría Costillas, Pizzas, Carnes a la Parrilla / Cheesi y Carne con Chilli con carne, etc. Además de "especialidades" diarias, las porciones son generosas y la comida está bien preparada y presentada. elabora cerveza y el propietario sin duda sabe cómo cuidar sus cervezas - un sobresaliente. Éramos un grupo de 7 y nuestra factura de bebidas incluía a 80, lo que me pareció una excelente relación calidad-precio. Si estás en Bowness prueba este pub.

We were staying in Windermere for a long weekend, my friends choose this pub for our first evening meal. The outside of he pub could do with a paint, but don’t let that put you off. The food and service was excellent and very reasonably priced. A nice selection of food on the menu and very generous portions.

My wife and I went to this pub on the last evening od our long weekend in Cumbria. We were met by a very welcoming and friendly young lady and we ordered food and she recommended the Chilli and my wife had the Sunday roast. Well they certainly know how to fill a plate and the young lady was spot on about the chilli it was the best I had eaten in ages. The service was very good. So if you're looking for good value in a friendly atmosphere. This has it!

Had a few meals in here , food was spot on , t bone steak was awesome, sunday roast was also very nice , piled high with roast potatoes and vegetables with lashings of gravy , beautiful, drinks were chilled ,wine and carling , i will be back for sure

This pub is a little bit different to the majority in the town. Can go in for a pint or choose from a large variety of meals. Ale was on top form & food did not disappoint. Also a little bit cheaper than most, Give it a try.

I ordered a rare steak.. a slice of sunburned cow would have been better at least it would be warn in the middle!

I had the sausage and mash the mash tasted like the frozen kind from Iceland (nothing wrong with that) the sausage had no colour and the skin was so tough loads of small carrots and peas and a tiny amount of gravy with lumps in it tables were really sticky which made it easy to read the leaflet that was stuck to it the server tried to remove it and it took her a couple of seconds so she knew the table was sticky yet didn't even offer to clean the table carpet is threadbare in places

We visited The Old John Peel Inn on 4th May 2019. We had spent the day walking and after walking along lake Windermere where everywhere was so busy we were happy to come across the pub. It was not as busy as the others in the area but this didn't take anything away from the welcoming atmosphere. Music was good and the staff were lovely and welcoming. Beer was perfect. The pub accept dogs too. Would recommend.

Nos sentimos muy bien acogidos en este pub y volvimos unas cuantas veces durante las 3 noches que estuvimos en Bowness - on - Windermere. La única comida que tuvimos fue una migaja y crema que mi esposo dijo que estaba deliciosa. Las bebidas tienen un precio muy razonable en comparación con los pubs locales. Personal amable y limpio. Sin duda volveremos si volvemos a la zona!

Sólo he comido aquí, nunca he estado antes y la comida era deliciosa. ¿Por qué esperar 60 minutos para comer en el Albert cuando este lugar está sobre la carretera? El personal es muy acogedor y amable con un servicio rápido, tuve el pollo especial de cazadores y mi marido, el pescado y las patatas fritas, era encantador y por 20 libras realmente buena relación calidad-precio.

We have used The Old John Peel in Bowness a couple of times a year when we visit The Lakes for almost 20 years and always had decent food and met nice people. This time something has changed the place was virtually empty and our first choice of food was not available. Our second choice was very unpleasant indeed such a disappoitment. I think that will be the last visit.

We called in here again today as we have had a lovely time here in the past. With a nice open fire roaring in the fireplace. Today it was a warm and friendly but no log fire as it was not that cold. The welcome from the barman was very nice. Beer was lovely it has only a small bar for a large pub but it will be worth the wait.

We are a family of 6, spent £90 on our meal, this included a bottle of wine and all the drinks. My daughter ordered a rare sirloin, arrived well done, my wife ordered a medium sirloin cremated. Both steaks sold as sizzling platters arrived more like smouldering platters. I ordered a half of chicken, very dry indeed, my son in law had the beef and ale pie, encased in an inch of pastry. Appalling meal, the staff were very apologetic but I’m afraid it was a bit too late then, the chef should know better. Been eating here for over 10 years and never had a reason to complain.Highly NOT recommended, avoid at all costs

Great bar staff and very welcoming. We met some great local people while we were there. Did not eat there but plenty of people did.

the food in here is really good - though very large portions if you are a hungry sort of person! I had Lasagne and it was one of the nicest I have ever had. Proper homemade food.

Nice friendly staff and usual pub grub. Free wi-fi. The one time my wife and I visited the men stood at the bar continually farted and swore loudly as we ate our dinner. Nice pub but some of the clients let it down.

Stopped off for some late lunch and was very disappointed. I ordered a burger which tasted of brillo pads and the wife ordered a veggie option which when served ended up being a lamb casserole which they did swap over. If it wasn’t for the apologetic staff and how well they handled this mistake it would have received 1 star.

Had a pop in to sample a few Beers on our New Years Day pub crawl and we where made to feel very welcome by the staff who were very busy at the time.

We use this pub every time we visit Bowness.

Took my family in the Old John Peel, and was very impressed!! Excellent food range, great value and was perfectly cooked - clean plates all round! Great friendly atmosphere and will definitely return while we are in Bowness-on-Windermere xx
