The Old Inn in South Somerset

We visited the Old Inn with friends on 'steak night' and all really enjoyed our delicious meals. The wine accompanying the food was perfect and we treated ourselves to the homemade desserts of sticky toffee pudding and apple cake. A first class experience with friendly staff in a warm and attractive country pub, just perfect.

Absolutely brilliant evening, food was amazing, there were 10 of us dining, all our food came out together! Exceptional service, and food! Definitely recommend!

I had this place recommended to me by someone who lives locally, so I made a point to stop by there on of my trips down the A303. I'm very pleased to say I've found my new favourite pub! Came in on a very busy Sunday and was very warmly greeted by the gentleman working front of house. They've got an excellent range of drinks to fit all tastes, with good local options and some lovely wines. The food was perfection, brought out by very warm and considerate staff. If I could have every meal created by their chefs I would be the happiest person on earth! I'll have to make more trips down that way to try my way through their menu top to bottom (and probably a few more times after that!) They told me they're planning to do afternoon tea soon, so I'll make sure I book myself in for that as soon as possible too!

New people running this and it pains me to say as a local businessman it’s a shambles . I have it the benefit when I ordered sausage and chips and egg and was served with 6 chipolatas and overdone eggs covered in grease . The front of. House chap who is part owner need’s hospitality lessons as got to be one of the worse front of house I have had the pleasure of . Zero personality and I really wanted to help this business but I’m sorry but what I will say is try it I may be wrong but unless they change there hosting skills they are heading for a really tough road ahead as this is a disappointment

So our first time here, and learnt that it’s new owners only took over 4 weeks ago. My wife and I both opted for the cheese burgers. A simple option but one that can either be some well or be a total failure. Glad to report that these were very very good cheese burgers, Good quality burger cooked with a really good char resulting in a great burger Definitely recommend. We will also plan a return soon and try a Sunday lunch. Good beer and wine, service attentive and seating comfortable. In summary a good start for the new owners.

This is a lovely character pub in a very pretty village just off the A303. It also has accommodation. We went here for a meal as a group of friends, it was very busy and seemed popular with locals as well as other diners. We all enjoyed our main courses, the steaks were very nice and tasty. The puddings were also tasty. The food was well presented and came out tasty. The service at the front of house seemed a little chaotic and this could have been cause they were so busy, they were also pleasant. We would visit here again.

One of the best steaks I’ve had! The staff were outstanding and delivered a fast, attentive service. An excellent evening out with friends. Highly recommended and I hope to be back.

Too many pubs feel the need to overload a menu with 'jus', and 'foam', with mixed results. If you want that sort of thing, go to somewhere with a Michelin star. What The Old Inn does is proper pub classics - burgers made of different dead animals, scotch eggs, steak - done properly. I was there with my wife and son and we all had burgers, which the chef managed to cook so they were just beyond pink - ie, spot on. We'd also had moules and the aforementioned scotch egg as starters. All accompanied by a cracking couple of pints of Exmoor ale, and an excellent Rioja. To quote Arnie: "I'll be back"

This one night stay was flawless. The pod was lovely, the continental breakfast and coffee machine hit the spot, the pub is a real gem, the food was tremendous and no surprise to see the chef Phil has won awards. The service we got from Natasha was the best service we have had all year - welcoming and brilliant throughout. We would like to come back if we can, we enjoyed driving for 10 minutes then having a lovely countryside walk over pretty, hills fields and lanes.

Staying in cottage nearby, we booked a table in the bar as we had our two dogs with us. Food and service were both very good. Would recommend and would return. The restaurant looked very nice. Car park was quite small which might be an issue at busier times.

Amazing experience - from the friendly, helpful staff to the amazing food, cannot recommend this place enough! We sat outside in the sunshine and enjoyed some of the best food we've ever eaten. The chicken supreme was full of flavour and the fish cakes were pretty much perfect.

We were at a lot of a loss where to go and after some searching we took a lucky gamble on the veggie options at the Old Inn (this area seems to have very little in this respect for dinner). So so pleased with our meals, especially my burger. Just bloomin lovely. Was tempted to order another but the kids would have wanted more too and it was late! A top meal. A lovely surprise.

Great local atmosphere and we were made to feel really welcome when we popped in on our weekend visit. The service was fantastic with friendly and happy staff working a bar and table service. Had a chin wag with some locals, the owner and the chef.Now, the runny scotch egg. Get yourselves to Holton, get into the Old Inn, order a pint and a scotch egg and then brace your taste buds for a treat. Best scotch egg yet. Thumbs up. Cheers.

We arrived to find that there was a wake in progress. Our table by the fire was reserved, but all very noisy. Excellent food - hot salmon salads and chicken caesar salad and a burger. The service could not have been better, with 70+ other people to deal with. Good to see the chef come out with the plates of food. We were all very impressed and will return again.

Was staying in an Airbnb nearby with my boyfriend and we visited for a drink and a bite to eat. We arrived on a Friday around 5.45pm and the pub was empty, but once we sat down for a drink more and more people began to arrive. The Thatchers cider was really good. Then we moved to the restaurant around 6.30pm which again was empty except for one large pre-booked table. We had the ham hock terrine and the whitebait to start, both were generous portions and really tasty. I had the truffle mac and cheese for main which was delicious and just the right amount of truffle, not overwhelming, perfect! My boyfriend had the (southern fried maybe?) chicken burger and again it was perfect. Highly recommend this place!

We visited back in September, lovely food but the waitresses and chefs should remember they can be heard. When we asked for some more gravy we could hear the rude response that came from the kitchen. Everyone has bad days though so we decided to just shrug it off. We visited again today, with most of us having a roast dinner. On each plate was three Brussel sprouts, three very small carrots and some red cabbage. The beef was medium rare but still a little tough. The turkey however was cooked well. The potatoes were lovely and of a generous size but most of it was of a ‘tepid’ temperature. Still edible though. The service, although very friendly was slacking. Lots of loud laugh and messing about from the kitchen area while we were waiting at least ten minutes for our plates to be cleared away. We told the waitress when she collected the dishes that the food was a little on the cooler side, of which she said she’d pass it on. When she came back with the coffees however she made the remark of bringing two at a time rather than all at once so they don’t get ‘cool’. You should take constructive criticism on the chin and work with it, not make comments about it. It’s a pretty little country pub but unfortunately just needs a senior role model to take charge and organise the younger waitresses. Please also remember comments you make can be heard from the kitchen!

Excellent Christmas lunch today very good indeed, the turkey just melted in the mouth. We’ll be back.

Evening meal with friends. First time here & cant believe we never tried here before. A lovely welcome from friendly efficient staff awaits you in this cosy pub/restaurant. We ate in the restaurant which has a varied and interesting menu. We had the honey roast parsnip & cumin soup which was absolutely delicious, and the whitebait was crispy & tasty. Followed by burger, cod & chips, and salmon. All dishes cooked to perfection and piping hot. I had the cod & triple cooked chips- a huge piece of fish with crisp to perfection batter and probably the best triple cooked chips I have ever had. Everyone else said their mains were spot on. The dessert menu looked very good, but we were so full up we couldn’t fit one in, so just had coffee/tea instead. When the bill came we were very pleasantly surprised as with drinks it came to under £100 for the 4 of us. Excellent value. This Inn has recently cleared the board at the BVM taste awards and I can fully see why. I just wish that we had come here sooner, but now we know how good it is we will be back. Best to book though as was very busy on the night we were in.

We ate here at the old innn last weekend, 4 of us had various choices and had 3 courses.We ate in the bar which was warm welconming and buzzing with chatter from the other visitors. There is a restuarant but we found the bar very cozy.The food was of a good standars and the staff were more than attentive.

I came here for a birthday meal with friends. What a warm and friendly welcome in the charming bar. We stayed in front of the fire for a few drinks and a gossip before moving in to the restaurant. The staff were fabulous and couldn't do enough to help. My salmon was incredible and a new firm favourite. Others on the table had the steak, a hearty burger, the local sausages, even the children's food looked fantastic. The mains were so good we all had to try the desserts. Can't fault The Old Inn, fairly priced, wonderful service and amazing food. We will definitely be back.

Went here with my teenagers for a meal, atmosphere in the bar was really good. Friendly staff who couldn’t do enough for you and the food was excellent, my steak was cooked perfectly. Did read a few of the below comments before going and if all some have to complain about is cost of wine, then I have to say, the house wine was well priced and very good. Would defiantly recommend and will be going again.

We headed out to the Old Inn after a long absence and under new ownership. We were placed in the snug but felt it was far too cold and then we asked to move into then bar. The menu was standard and we ordered the burgers which were slightly over priced. The bar lacked atmosphere and for the price we wish we had gone on a burger night for value for money. Don’t think we will return for a while as the place wasn’t very inspiring.

Its not often you have to eat a meal in a restaurant in a duffel coat. My wife had to - the place was freezing. One small appliance that emitted as much heat as a politician's promise. The food, when it arrived was very good. But the service was so very slow. Nice people doing the serving, maybe not enough of them.

Was taken to the old inn for a meal for the first time on my birthday and was greeted by the pleasant friendly staff and shown to our table. The food was a little wait but it was sure worth the wait when it arrived, beautifully cooked by the resident chief.. highly recommended will be calling again.

Very nice pub, welcoming staff; however, felt that £10.50 (yes, really!) for a large (250ml) Chenin Blanc was excessive. Sadly, despite the friendly atmosphere, unlikely to return.

Under the new management the Old Inn is even better. There is a warm welcome from attentive staff. You know that the food will be good when the staff enjoy their job. The Old Inn is a hidden gem. It's the kind of place that you can either dress up or go casual and both fit the surroundings and the ambience. The food is innovative without being pretentious, well prepared and above tastes great. The menu is wide enough to satisfy all tastes. It's a popular local so booking is advised.

Nice friendly welcome by Staff, Pub now under new ownership, and it shows. Excellent Sunday lunch, the beef was slow cooked, and very tender. One person had Lamb, and also commented on its quality. Good selection of G & T, and nicely served, as was the Wine for our meal. Sweets really yummy. Left well pleased, will certainly visit again.

This was our second visit and once again we were really impressed. From the moment you walk through the door you are made to feel welcome. Lovely setting - cosy bar with wood burner and an airy dining room with the table well laid out. The menu has something for everyone - highly recommend Scotch Egg starter, Ribeye Steak for main and Vanilla Cheesecake for dessert. Good selection of wine at reasonable prices, and despite what others think the alcohol free beer wasn't too bad either! We will definitely be back for more. Thanks.

Had a lovely meal for my birthday at the Old Inn, it was on a weekday evening so it was very quiet with one other table. Food was delicious but unfortunately the room so very cold even so that I had to keep my jacket on!

The evening started off well. The newly decorated restaurant is lovely and the staff were friendly, the food we ordered was tasty but not very plentiful. Three arancini with no salad or bread isn’t a main, so we had to ask for bread (we got a slice of bread with no butter) and the streaks could have done with more than a mushroom to fill the men up.

My wife and I made a return visit to The Old Inn on Sunday lunchtime last week - living fairly local, we have visited on a number of occasions over the last few years when the pub/restaurant was at times, under different ownership. Some great - and some not so!

We decided to try here today for a family meal of 7 of us, WOW is all I can say. Our roast meals and puddings were absolutely superb and at very good prices too, plenty of drinks to choose from, everything for everybody , staff were absolutely fantastic , very happy, helpful and polite. All 7 of us will definitely be going back there again ASAP . Excellent service, Definitely 10/10

I have a lunch there with friends on Friday lunchtime, that’s my first time to the old Inn since new ownership, We like the menu, the price is reasonable, and we all like the sitting setting, not too close to next table , and we feel relax !

We found The Old Inn by accident but what a gem!!! The food was out of this world, full of flavour and reasonably priced. Those runny scotch eggs were something to write home about and don't even get me started on the Creme Brulee.

This is a real gem. The food was quite excellent with a service which was as professional as one could wish. Would definitely visit again.

Last time we visited the Old Inn I nearly walked out, what a difference this time under new management. The place was heaving, inside and out and in the restaurant. Well supported by locals and those from further afield. The food was sublime, in my humble opinion it needs a star or a rosette, if this is read by any restaurant awards critics please come here and try it.

The best Sunday lunch ever! Succulent beef cooked to perfection, roasties, veg, red cabbage, Yorkshire pud and very tasty gravy, all beautiful presented. Followed by a choice of puds to die for. All washed down with Thatchers Gold on tap. Highly recommend.

Another visit here, previous visits have been very disappointed. A change of hand and now seems a bustling and thriving village pub, a warm welcome and now some atmosphere. Will now look forward to my next visit and to sample the now excellent food (so I'm told by friends).

We visited for a lunch with friends from Hampshire. Sausages,Steak and Fish main meals all left nothing but the cutlery and plates. Similar with the puds of mini doughnuts, brownies and brûlée. A most enjoyable lunchtime, we’ll be back.

We had absolutely delicious burgers here. They have a special burger night on Thursdays so we took advantage of the offer. Three lovely meaty ones and a veggie one. The bean burger was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere in the pub very friendly and cheerful.

We came here years and years ago and have only just returned. That should tell you enough about our experience back then. What a difference. Friendly service, dogs welcome, decent cider and drinks selection and great food. We had simple salads outside on a sunny evening, bit of an ad-hoc drop in and couldn't be happier.

We’d heard that there were new owners and advised to give it a go. So pleased we did, there something on the menu to grab everyone, we selected starters of runny scotch egg and mains of burgers with fries & coleslaw we were delighted with delicious flavours and good portions.

We attended the Gin club evening, it was a great social event, with great food and lovely people. We will definitely be back- Thank you!

We were staying next door so popped in and had an excellent meal. Not over expensive for the quality of food we received. I had a lovely 8oz burger and chips whilst my wife enjoyed locally sourced pork sausages, red cabbage and mash. Beer was also well kept.

Have been in on a number of occasions and it's a typical old english gem of a pub serving great food with friendly staff. Well worth a visit.

We often eat out in local pubs, so we were very happy we came across the Old Inn this evening. 5 mins from home, the best pub food we’ve eaten in Somerset, and very affordable too. They have all the pub classics, alongside more adventurous dishes. A cosy village pub, with a great selection of drinks and super friendly staff. We definitely plan to become regulars here, please don’t change a thing!!!

Had a sandwich lunch here as part of our road trip to Cornwall. The food was excellent, well presented and the staff friendly and attentive. Slightly off the beaten track but well worth a visit.

We had a last minute planned team meal at the Old Inn. They were really accommodating and fitted 10 of us in.

Thought we’d try this as we visit many local restaurants. Really excellent decision - from starters to mains and puddings as well as wine. They’ve just opened a new restaurant section -nicely designed. Will definitely return !

We had supper there last week - my first visit since the new management. What a lovely surprise! We had mussels which were excellent, made even better by being able to chat to the chef. The welcome and service all put this pub back where it used to be as one of the best in the area

What a great find the old inn was,with a very friendly welcome from the landlord.on a weeks holiday from Essex we wanted to find some nice little country pubs for eating out & we saved the best till last.we both ordered the sausage,mash & red onion gravy which was an absolute delight to be followed by sticky toffee pudding with ice cream & a lovely caramel sauce.thank you for a quality meal & the friendly manor which we both thoughrully enjoyed.would not hesitate to return if ever in the area again.

My partner and I have been to The Old Inn 3 times in the last month. On the first occasion I booked via Facebook Messenger and got an instant reply. The other 2 times we have just popped in and asked for a table. The pub is cosy, warm and comfortable. The staff are extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating. The locals are cheery, friendly and welcoming - no deathly awkward silences here when newcomers walk through the front door. The food is extremely good with plenty of tasty menu choices. Very good local scrumpy cider and well-kept beers.

I have not had a meal at The Old Inn, Holton for many years, but when an old school friend come to visit from Guernsey we chose the Old Inn for Saturday evening 24 Feb 2018 as this was the last place where we had a meal together, about 15 years ago. What a nice evening! We sat by the warm fire and both had slow cooked lamb shank with creamed potato and mange tout (not soggy, correctly with a bite left in them) and mint sauce. Having the previous day booked the table for between 7:30 and 8pm we realised we would rather eat earlier and arrived at ten to seven when the female chef cheerily agreed that earlier would not be a problem and our food (slowly cooked that afternoon) was produced at 7:10pm. The regulars, many of whom who had been coming here for well over 10 years, and the new staff, generated a friendly atmosphere and made us thoroughly welcome.

Just had an excellent Sunday roast here. Masses of meat with goor rare beef and succulent turkey. Yorkshire pudding ( a bit soggy) and masses of nicely cooked vegetables. No room for pud sadly. Nice atmosphere and meal very reasonably priced.

We popped in here with our dog and had a lovely time. The new owners couldn't have been more hospitable and prices were very reasonable with good food. We particularly enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding. Id like to come back on a Saturday as I reckon they would do a mean roast! Also they were so lovely to our dog (always the way to my heart!)
