The Old Harbour Fish & Chips in Weymouth and Portland

Fish was fresh and a good size. Batter crisp on top but soggy underneath. Chips had too many hard and black bits. Most furious of all was the use of bamboo cutlery, plastic dishes and trays instead of plates in the restaurant. It was like we were still in Covid. A restaurant in need of a dishwasher?

Great tasting food, good sized portions and lovely gluten free options with no reactions after.

Gluten Free heaven for fish & chips fans. They cook food in separate oil if you have a gluten intolerance. We ate in the restaurant area. It was nice and quiet, the staff were absolutely lovely and brought the food to our table. Highly recommended. We will be visiting again 😋

This is the best fish and chips we have ever had! The fish was so thick and fresh. Chips where cooked to perfection and the staff where friendly and service great was 100% the best part of our holiday.

Delicious fresh fish and friendly staff! I liked the little space to eat inside, the weather was bad but I wanted fish and chips so it was nice to have a space to eat it!

Busy Easter Saturday.. ordered gluten free fish and chips to take away which was cooked fresh to order absolutley lovely! very clean venue, polite staff the only down side I would say eating such a big bit of fish with a tiny 2 prong wooden fork whilst holding the tray was a little tricky proper sized wooden forks would be better

Nice fish and chips. Served in cardboard containers which is admirable. Able to sit in the dining area whilst waiting, admiring fascinating old photos of Weymouth Don't change anything - this is all very good !!

All good here. Very good size portion of chips with very tasty sausage. Will use ahead of The Malboro (which in my experience is vastly over-rated) from now on.

Fish and chips are nice enough nothing special though.

The Duchess & I took my Mum here today for lunch. Great welcome from friendly staff, food was freshly cooked, very tasty with good sized portions. The Duchess said the Cod Bites were the best she's ever had, very high praise indeed. We will be back next time we visit my Mum.

Bland chips, undercooked batter around anemic looking sausages, wooden knives and forks all served in a freezing cold restaurant half. Also under the new management half the items on the menu aren't available despite still being listed. This place used to be great, but sadly no longer.

I was a regular who used the venue both in person and through the just eat app, never having an issue. Lovely food. However! I waited over an hour and 15 minutes for a delivery so phoned up to question why it said on the app they were no longer taking deliveries as I hadn’t received my food, the person on the phone told me he had been updating the app, I said the app still says “We have received your order”. There were no updates. He said “what do you want me to do?” So I cancelled the order and he said because I cancelled it I wouldn’t get a refund. I had to question it with just eat, I said I won’t get a refund?!? But I’ve waited 75minutes for nothing?!? His reply was “THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM NOT MINE”. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing! I told him his attitude was disgusting and I hung the phone up! Will never order from them again! Never had an issue with the app, so he was clearly lying regarding that point, I could have accepted it, tech issues happen, but to be spoken to like that I won’t accept. Awful customer service.

New management Cooked fresh very good gluten free fish. Have to pay extra for ketchup. Eating in they no longer serve tea or coffee. No bread. Would recommend for take out only.

The chips were great and the fish was good but it was unusually oily. The coating was soggy, not crispy.

Having checked for good fish and chips in Weymouth we expected good fish and chips at The Old Harbour. Seriously not good. We had to wait 35 minutes after placing ( and paying for) our order having been told to expect an up to ten minute wait. We watched a painfully slow team of three stumble around together operating inefficiently. But we knew our order would be fresh when we eventually got it. Well freshly cooked doesn’t mean well cooked. The batter was thick and doughy with an inside layer around the fish undercooked and unpalatable. The outer layer lacked colour, was dull and hardly crisp. The chips were tolerable but on the undercooked side. Mean with the salt and vinegar we had to ask for another shake or two. Finally the wrapping: two cumbersome packets each ( just our f and c in a cardboard box and a poly box) and much fumbled. We don’t think the team understood what good f and c are. We won’t go there again.

We spent a very long time waiting for food! The food was OK, nothing special. I wouldn't eat here again.

We picked a very quiet time to eat so the dining area has no atmosphere. The batter was also a bit too thick detracting from the taste of the fish.

Great fish and chips gets busy so that's why slightly lower stars ,gluten free food ,large portion, no plates but in boxes and disposable knives and forks,would recommend just hope its a bit quieter

New owners so now a take away with seating. Putting prebattered and then fried fish onto grease proof paper in an open weave plastic tray meant the oil, all of it, congealed under the fish. Not cheap, mushy green mass that may have been peas, no customer care, no hot drinks. They still have awards from the previous owners on the window which they are not entitled to. No going back for us.

Superb freshly cooked haddock n chips n mushy peas. Only really struggled with the portion size. Hope you have a big appetite. We had dinner around 6pm so it was quiet in the restaurant.

Came across this little gem of a fish & chip shop that offers Gluten-free options . The lovely couple went to a lot of trouble to explain how the fryers are separate & showed me the flour & batter he used were safe & gluten free , I am coeliac & can’t tolerate any cross contamination. So hubby & I went back this evening to sample their food . It was so reassuring to know my food was safe to eat . I had Cod & chips & even had gluten free vinegar. It was delicious ! the fish was flaky fresh & cooked to perfection the batter was light & crispy & not at all greasy . The chips were amazing too . I honestly can’t remember the last time I’ve eaten proper fish & chips . Great place to eat in or take away . Will definitely go back again the next time we visit Weymouth. Thank you

New owners just as good as before

Best fish and chips we've had in ages. We had mini cod fillet and chips. Expecting a small piece of cod, we got 2 good sized pieces with chips each. The batter was so crispy and not greasy. It was good that they have inside tables and chairs so we ate in there. There was too much for me. The food and sizes were amazing. Will definitely eat there again

Do not trust the good reviews as they apply to the previous owners. Current owners speak basic English, not friendly and super slow. The cod came out limp, cheap and greasy batter Don't bother! We wasted £40 on cod and chips. Never again.

The worst fish and chips I had ever tasted wish I had read the reviews before hand. I had the the gf option cod . Very greasy stodgy tasted burnt oil yet batter very doughy and you could taste the flour. My wife’s normal batter was not much better. It wasn’t cheap and was a complete waste of money. Staff must have realised how poor it was . We sat in to eat and not one of them made eye contact as they walked passed us or asked if we were enjoying our food . Be warned and stay away !!!

Crispy and hot chips, crispy batter, not rushed atmosphere, staff were very attentive.

Chips were Outstanding. Fish was beautiful. Batter needs some work tho as very greasy. With the batter sorted this would be an easy 9/10 at the moment tho 6/10.

Not only my opinion, but all 6 of our party agreed that this was the best fish and chips, and sausage supper we had all week long in Weymouth. The friendly atmosphere and service from the staff was excellent. They even made space for my wife’s disability scooter inside the shop while we enjoyed a very pleasant evening. I recommend anyone to visit this establishment. You will not be disappointed.

Chips were half decent, if not a little soggy. We ate in, rather than takeaway, I felt the dining area could have been a little cleaner, that would be the only other reason for giving 4 stars.

Lovely food, at a decent price for a seaside chippy, the servers in there were lovely and we all had different size fishes, and they were all quality. Highly recommend ☺️

I’m coeliac and another great meal. Freshly cooked, separate fryer. My place to go for Gluten Free fish and chips. Shame no table service or wine as before but just glad it’s reopened and still doing GF all day till late.

We planned on going to this Fish and Chip restaurant via good reviews. We spoke to a large number of locals who advised us to avoid it. We kept an eye on the place every day when we passed and the shop was always empty.

I ordered the gluten free fish and chips the batter on the fish was too thick and quite stodgy. Would have been nicer with less batter and maybe cooked longer

The worst fish and chips I've had in years. Obviously frozen Cod fillets 'served' in a golden envelope of extremely greasy 'batter.' Staff couldn't get the order right. Only 2 people ordering and it was a painful experience. Sticky tables and felt grubby. Awful food. Awful 'service.' Apparently poor hygiene in the only chip shop in Weymouth that doesn't serve fresh fish. Never again. And if you value your digestive system you'll avoid too!

Food were lovely only thing is they only had 1 Toilet and the lock is still broken on the door like someone else said 3 months ago

Gadverdamme, smerigste fish en chips die ik heb gegeten. Ik voelde mijn aderen dichtslibben door de overmatige hoeveelheid vet in de vis.

The family went off of past reviews for lunch and it was horrible. I’m assuming, possible, new owner/management. While ordering the employee didn’t speak english and made it very difficult to order. As we received our food it came with no utensils/plates/napkins ( we requested and received two sets of utensils and two napkins for four people), beer was warm, seats and tables were dirty, you have to purchase ketchup & tarter sauce. There’s a reason it was slow with patrons! If you’re looking for poor service, warm beer, this is the place for you!!

After seeing how much the price's had gone up post covid at another "very close" fish and chip shop the other side of the harbour which we used to visit every time we came to Weymouth, we decided to try this one instead. We had 3 x fishcake and chips, 1 X sausage and chips and it was all cooked to order and fresh and hot. It cost us £22 as opposed to over double the price at the other chippy. This will be our new "go to" when we pop down again.

The chips are always great I've had food from here several times now at first the curry sauce was a bit to runny for my liking but today it was absolutely perfect and I will definitely use them again and look forward to doing so.

Absolutely spot on fish and chips,cooked fresh and Absolutely the best I have tasted for a long while. Sat inside and ate. The people were very pleasant. Indoor seating needs a bit of decorating and finishing off. Would definitely go back again. Visited Monday 24th July. I would recommend it to anyone.

Went there on opening day in June 2023. No Gluten Free option. After reading previous reviews, we headed to The Old Harbour Fish and Chips and were very excited. Unfortunately we appeared to turn up on Opening Day under new ownership. The overall feel under the new ownership was definitely not that of a 'Traditional' chippie. The order took 50 minutes for us, and everybody in the shop was waiting for at least that long as well. Really terrible service. There's a chance this was because they were new and getting sued to things, but they just weren't putting much in the fryer and had loads of people waiting. Very strange, and many disgruntled customers. The only reason I went was to get Gluten Free fish and chips and they don't even do it under this new regime... Certainly won't be going back.

It is very basic tables and seating. This could be improved but because the food was so brilliant, it. didn't worry us.

Just had cod n' chip each with a curry sauce and 2 cans of cold fizzy drinks for £27. Food was lovely, the staff were friendly and helpful . The seating area was clean and tidy. Thanks to all the staff great place.👍😁👍

Had supposedly large cod & chips . Some of the chips were green and the fish was so greasy I couldn't eat it. Although they have a "restaurant " attached you still have to order in the chip pie side of the shop and wait for it to arrive . We waited 30 minites even though there was nobody else in there when we arrived. When we got our food it was served in a box with wooden cutlery and a can of drink with no glass. Not exactly restaurant service. Then we discovered that the toilets were out of order so we had to rush our meal as we needed a loo.. The seats in the "restaurant" all need a good scrub they are filthy and stained . we will never return.

Bit of a mix up re delivery but the staff sorted it and just had the best cod, plaice, chips and mushy peas in years.

No dogs allowed. Such a shame as we were told the fish and chips are some of the best, but unable to confirm. I'm leaving this review so other people can find the reference to dogs and save having to find out for themselves You can take dogs into high-end restaurants and most good pubs these days, so its a bit of an outdated rule.

Lovely fish and chips June 2023

I had one of the best pieces of cod I’ve ever had here. It’s only cooked to order now so it’s a bit longer wait, but it’s so worth it. Gluten free options available too and right by the harbour. Fantastic.

Just to say “No Gluten Free” as of June 2023 the other reviews are from 3yrs ago. The owner says they will start doing GF in a few weeks, he said the same to me 12 months ago. I’m not complaining but people like myself take time to find these places and it’s not fair on us to get to the door and then have to think where now.

Was in Weymouth at Weekend and fancied chips and as my two daughters are both Coeliac headed to The Old Harbour Chippy to find they were closed at 12.30pm with no explanation. Daughters not happy :(

Several times have travelled from Bournemouth using the visiting times stated (twice a call in advance to check due to this) and every time closed with no notice up online or on the shop window explaining! Terrible management of a business!

I was hoping to get some banging fish and chips and leave a review.. sadly though when I rocked up at 20.20 to find the doors closed and a shut sign.. meant to be open until 2100 🤷‍♂️

Went in to the takeaway side with someone with coeliacs and someone with a milk allergy honestly felt so reassured the food wasn't just free from but safe to eat with no cross contamination and the staff knew what they were talking about mom had the gf fish and chips and said its the best she has had in years I had gf battered sausage as the batter didn't contain milk and it tasted like a normal one Will come here whenever we visit weymouth

Probably the best gluten free fish and chips we have had. We were given two pieces of fish for one portion. That would be two portions elsewhere. All the food was not greasy at all. So cooked well with fresh oil. To capture it all the prices were really good.

No queue says it all really,wish I’d waited in the 20 + queue at the Marlbourgh across the road, The fish was nice chips ok ,but the batter was stodgy and greasy,had to throw it away and just eat the fish

Lovely fish and chips curry was good sausages are good and battered mushrooms were could could of done with a cupple more battered mushrooms though but is very good value.

Enjoyed our fish, chips & tasty pea fritter.
