The Old Farmhouse in Darlington

We went with friends for lunch on Boxing Day - a bit of a treat to get us out of the house and let someone else do the cooking, but it was disappointing. We ate from the set boxing day menu. To start, two of the party had Camembert and Mushroom Cheddar Fondue. Tasty enough but the 'fondue' was very runny - the consistency of milk, not fondue. One had the pate which, apart from the fact it was (a) very small and (b) served with the same toasted bloomer as the fondue, rather than the advertised ciabatta was fine, and the other had the melon and ham which was fine. Turning to the mains... mmm... Three of us ordered the steak It was supposedly a 10oz but two of the portions seemed much smaller - Two wanted it medium- well and I wanted mine medium. Initially, the waitress seemed confused as to which was which. However, she 'clarified' with the kitchen and served it. However, the one served to me as medium was the wrong side of well (and was not very hot). The medium-well's, one was well - well over and the other rare. The triple cooked chips were nice (although I counted just 8 - served in a pot) and the tomatoes were also good but it was not great overall The other member of the party had the belly pork. Supposedly served with a Pink Lady apple jus. It arrived dry. This was queried and the waiter advised it was normally served with gravy and brought some out. Clearly they had no jus so served with nothing but then when queried just served with standard gravy. Desserts were equally mediocre. Two had the crumble, which was apparently OK, one had the 'Christmas Chocolate Trio' which was supposed to include a 'Millionaires Chocolate Bar' of which they presumably had none, and was served with a chocolate orange sponge concoction - very nice apparently, but not as billed. The ice cream which was supposedly honeycomb which was served with both that and my profiteroles was actually only straight vanilla. Service was good but the food poor. It wasn't particularly busy and was only 1pm so they should not have run out of stuff by that time but, if you run out, fess up at the point of order rather than thinking you can just get away with serving anything else. And learn how to cook steaks. The bill, for a boxing day three course meal, wasn't too bad - £190 including a drink each (or at least it wouldn't have been too bad if the food had been better)

I have visited here the last few Sundays with different members of my family for Sunday lunch. It has been excellent on both occasions. Food tasty, well presented and cooked with care. The staff couldn’t do enough to help. The servers, particularly a young blonde girl in a cream Christmas tree jumper, was polite, cheerful and ensured we had everything we needed to enjoy our meals. This happened twice so we know it’s consistently a good place to enjoy a family outing.

Visited for Sunday lunch booked for 3:30 pm, 3 adults. The staff could not have been friendlier, a lovely welcome, service was perfect, the food was lovely, could not fault a thing. Tables were so clean, no sticky tables here. We ordered the lamb dinner for 2, just delicious, the lamb was melty, Yorkshire's great & just the right amount of vegetables. A meal of Moroccan chicken presented on a large skewer, side of chips & such a lovely salad for my husband. Again, could not fault the meal. Staff from start to finish were great, thank you for a lovely time.

Great pub food, pleasant service, reasonable prices and a nice cosy atmosphere with a real log fire. Even the coffee was good !

Went for our annual xmas lunch with my sister first time there. Building is beautiful inside and out very festive. Staff very friendly good service and outstanding food. We ate of the festive fayre menu. A little pricer at £30.50 2 courses but apart from toasties not being great everything else was devine. Fantastic find for a family meal. Everything was perfect and the price very reasonable. The staff clearly care about their customers. Great experience had by all.

Friendly and welcoming, staff are lovely, food is great every time I have visited, we always pop here when home, cosy with the open fires going, dog friendly too. I remember it when I was young being a derelict building. Nice to see it revived.

We visited this place tonight on the 1st October we both ordered the pork belly it was absolutely delicious definitely come back in the future quick service and food was piping hot friendly staff too didn’t feel pressured to order food and drinks

Super family meal. We visited The Old Farmhouse for lunch and we were most definitely not disappointed. From start to finish all staff were fantastic. The food was delicious all of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Thank you for making our stay so lovely. Thank you to Emily for being so nice to my dad.

Visited the farmhouse today for lunch. The food was delicious and the service was brilliant as usual. Good wine selection too.

It is a nice atmosphere candles and everything long wait for just a pizza and they didnt ask if i wanted it cut because i am a person that likes having my pizza cut but when they got my pizza to me OMG it was good there was lots of cheese and it was tasty highly recomend pizza.

Went for an early evening meal it was very good 2 of us had 3 courses and 2 had 2 courses the food and the service was very good .the sticker toffee pudding was very good would definitely go back also dog friendly with dog treats as you enter

The girl who served us was rude and couldn't have cared less. We raised an issue with the smell of damp where we were sitting, she did offer to move us but her attitude was appalling, she messed the drinks order up, she input malibu rather than archers, when the drink were brought over they said they didn't have any malibu which was never ordered. No apology. We all ordered steaks one was cooked wrong but she also did not have a clue which was which. Another tasted burnt. The food is extremely expensive for what it was, very small peace of steak was £30. I'm surprised they are still in business. We thought we would give this place one last try, last time all we could hear was the chef swearing and shouting at one of the servers. Again the food was poor.

Had a really lovely afternoon/early evening here. Staff are extremely professional and diligent. The food is excellent, hot and tasty. Second time here - the Sunday lunch was served without any stuffing. We explained to Richard (Mead) and without any fuss and straight away Richard appeared with a small plate of stuffing. The Sunday Lunch and Steak was excellent- Welldone the Chef!! Excellent service, responsive and we were felt “that people within this establishment cared”!! Welldone Richard and the rest of the Staff that looked after us. We will be back again…. With the Dog!! 😳🤣🤣🤗👍🏻😎

The charm of this sympathetically restored old building is enhanced by that of its staff. Without exception polite and helpful. I’d particularly like to mention Emily who treated us like one of the family.

The pub is beautiful and set out lovely. Staff are so welcoming and always happy to help. Food is AMAZING and everyone comes out so full. It is pricey but definitely worth it.

Family of five on a Sunday lunchtime. Home made soup was very good. Sunday roast had excellent thick cuts and all the trimmings, veg cooked perfectly. Steak and ale pie very good. Deserts were ok. Service excellent and a nice place. Would recommend.

Only been living in Darlington for a year now and this is by far our favourite family any occasion venue. Anything anyone has ever ordered has been satisfied. Only reason not 5* is beer is too pricey.

This place has a lovely chilled atmosphere and always look forward to eating here.Lovely Sunday lunch! Roast beef spot on and plenty of it, lovely Yorkshire puddings and gravy. Would have given a score if 5 but was slightly disappointed with the roast potatoes as they weren’t crispy or brown enough for me.

Don’t know about lockdown but the quality of the food they should be locked up! Sunday lunch no beef? Roast potatoes dry / extra for cauliflower cheese- like water. Starters- kofta more meat on a cockroach! Prawn cocktail 1 piece lettuce 6 prawns a piece of lemon? Without doubt the worse Sunday lunch ever.

Really recommend a visit to here. Had a few meals since lockdown and it’s covid safe and the meals have been lovely. House burger is one of the best I’ve had , includes pulled brisket bacon onion rings and choice of chips . Amazing !!

Absolutely lovely food! Always enjoy going here as the pub has a lovely, relaxing atmosphere. It is great for family dinners or bigger occasions too. The staff are so friendly and helpful. We have already been loads and will continue to visit.

Lovely first catch up with friends after the long lock down period. Service very friendly and the food was delicious. The lasagne was perfect pub grub !! Liked how when we went in they explained all the new procedures to us all helped as one of our party were slightly cautious. Even told us that all the chairs/tables had been sanitised even underneath, only down side was the limited food available that were sold out on the menu. Totally understand these things happen but would have been nice to be told before some of the party had chosen to order these. Thanks again

Very disappointing lunch. Food not hot Yorkshire puddings odd potatoes not crisp. We complained to waitress who offered another meal which we declined.

Fantastic atmosphere, service & friendliness of staff. The food is gorgeous & served warm within a short timeframe. There are tables by the wood fire or the restaurant area. They even hold 'Doggie brunches' monthly, or as near as. Plus there are dog biscuits & water bowls just inside the door for your dog(s).We have a lovely time every time we go.

We came here last week for my grandparents birthdays and they were very impressed. Wonderful service and delicious food!

It looks lovely from the outside and and so we went with high expectations. It starts badly - we hung around for 10 minutes being ignored until we found someone to tell that we had a reservation. 45 minutes later the starter finally arrived ...! Anyway the food was nice but almost everything has an alcohol based theme to it which limits the choice for anyone that doesn’t need to have alcohol in their chicken pie! The staff who served us were very friendly.

Valentines meal, a few mistakes some of the order was not served with the meal had to wait for them, over all food was good,When I paid for the bill it’s was £20 more than it should be, £10 deposit wasn’t removed from the bill and the valentines set menu discounts were not added this took the bill £20 more, I noticed and told the staff and this was rectified but shouldn’t of happened in the first place. The staff were friendly but I was never asked if we wanted a drink when we had empty glasses.Probably wouldn’t return due to this.

I have visited here a few times with family for Sunday lunch. Overall it has always been very pleasant particularly if seated near the open fire on a cold day. The food is generally plentiful and of good quality, however the pies could do with a little more filling. It is not the cheapest place to eat but if you stick to the Sunday lunch you can't go wrong.

Amazing. Food perfection. Had a lovely hunters chicken which was quality chicken breast. I found the atmosphere very cosy as we were sat by an open fire which was toasty, especially after being outside with storm Dennis. It was a lovely experience and I would go again. Highly recommend it.

Just returned after a disappointing Valentines Meal. We opted for the steak pie x 2; sadly it was tasteless (due in the main to the fact there was not much meat in them and the carrots and veg were squishy), which was no doubt due to the fact they were frozen. The Camembert starter was reasonable but given we had to reorder the drinks as the waiter forgot them, the candle at the table was not lit and the table rose had seen better days the ambience we were hoping for was somewhat lacking. To add insult to injury when we settled the Bill we were asked to download an app for future discount as opposed to being asked how our meal or the experience was.

Had a lovely lunch on Thursday. Set 2 course lunch £11.95. Good value and good portions. Staff very attentive but not intrusive. Lovely and warm with a proper coal fire. Would recommend to anyone.

Met a friend here midweek for lunch. It was a cold day and it was lovely to see the fires lit, so we chose a table near to one of the fireplaces. It's not clear whether or not it's table service, but the waiting staff do come and take orders, as well as being able to order at the bar. I had the lunchtime fish and chips (goujons) and my friend had the camembert and chicken sandwich with chips. Both were nice, although disappointing that there was no tartar sauce available. The pub is quite large so although it was reasonably busy, it didn't feel crowded. Would definitely visit again and hopefully the menu in the summer may feature more 'sandwich' type options, rather than mainly hot food.

Visited on a Saturday lunchtime with a friend and her toddler. Warm welcome on arrival and attentive staff. The menu has a great selection available and they were happy to cater to my requests. Would definitely recommend and planning on visiting again in the near future.

Fab! Lived locally for many years but never visited! Feel I’ve been missing out for a good while now. Service was brilliant and food, even though they were busy, was spot on.

Visited with my friend on one of the busiest nights of the year. Straight forward booking process on line. Warm welcome from staff. Lovely Christmas atmosphere with real fires burning bright. Food was tasty with lovely fresh vegetables. Food is a tad on the expensive side but we will be back for the whole experience which was worth the money.

Today. Booked online as a halfway house meet up to exchange Christmas gifts. Having booked, I came across some poor reviews but stuck with it.

Lovely warm bar great service very welcoming nice chilled atmosphere. I really enjoyed my stop here. I ordered the chicken and mushroom pie which I throughly enjoyed was one of the best pies ever eaten had mine severed with mash which complemented the pie completely lovely light puff pastry 100% the best chicken and mushroom pie I have eaten. Plenty of filling and left me with no room for desert, I even struggled with my pint of Guinness. If you ever nearby would definitely recommend for food.

Stopped by on Sunday night for a bite to eat, welcoming atmosphere, very cosy. Real open fires were roaring and staff really friendly. Once ordering our food we discovered the weekly quiz. Christian the host was amazing, getting teams involved and all proceeds going to Cancer Research . Food delicious to say the least, scallops on black pudding Will defiantly be back next week!!

After a recent pleasant Sunday lunch decided to try the Xmas meal.What a mistake.

Used to go here quite a bit then went in the summer and had an awful Sunday lunch; so we decided to try it again today. Never again. We felt invisible as customers, no friendly service at all. More importantly the lunch was the worst Sunday lunch I have ever had. Dry beef, mushy vegetables, roast potatoes like bullets and cold gravy. Truly terrible. Avoid!

Happened on this pub for a late lunch. Impressed with choice and value of two course fixed price meal. All very tasty. Would call in again if nearby.

Visited The Old Farmhouse today and as usual it didn't disappoint. Andy and the team are always willing to go the extra mile to improve the experience. Lovely setting in a chilled out environment, great selection of food and drinks and at a reasonable price whilst maintaining high quality. Our food came promptly and was hot, we will definitely be returning, great job guys.

Popped in today as a friend recommend we try darlington pubs. Picked this one as it's got 4.2 stars. Yet I've got no idea how its managed to get that. The inside is amazing and two open fires just beautiful. The latte comes on a pointless huge plate that looks nice yes but the plate fills the table and we felt cramped. As for the food honestly I wouldn't bother it's way over priced and over cooked. Chicken was dry af and somehow they managed to mess up triple cooked chips how on earth do you mess that up. I will say the the garlic mayo is lovely.

Have visited this pub for many times for lunch and evening meals with family. Decent menu selection and reasonably priced.

As soon as you go in your welcome is good staff helpful, the warmth and atmosphere and the decor is homey relaxing, people chatting and laughing so you feel as though you're sat at home with friends, food was great standard the only thing that didn't come to standard was the calamari I found it more like a soft pork scratching, my main was outstanding it was duckon mash with broccoli and a beautiful sauce Thank you

Very disappointed. Not impressed with the quality of the food. I have never seen frozen chips tripled cooked before as was stated on the menu. They arrived with my hunters chicken and were a plain frozen chip very boring. Will not be visiting again.

Called in to try for a late lunch . Bar staff took order for drinks and food . One was fish and chips no problem . Second nut roast with veg and was advised probably no roast potatoes as might have been sold . Waited 20 min no drinks although a waiter had asked if we wanted to order and we said already done so at the bar he said he would get them ... he didn't and eventually we caught the barman who took the order who said he had forgotten ... he did apologise . Order eventually came nut roast was burnt around the edge which had been put on the plate upside down presumably to disguise it and the few roasties were hard on the outside and chewy in the middle must have been stood awhile or maybe used as returned from others . The few other vegetables were fine . The fish and chips were ok . If hadn't paid in advance and not been so hungry we would have returned the food and left so sadly won't be going back

Lovely cosy place to eat, well presented on the plate. Staff were friendly and polite and helpful. Andy who i am assuming is the landlord was very polite and friendly which is always nice to see. Food was lovely, not a fan of frozen chips though but the rest of it was really tasty and well presented. Not a massive menu either but enough i suppose.

Went for a meal with friends. Party of 15. Service was great. The food was even better. I had lamb shank which fell off the bone. Gorgeous. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would recommend

We booked a table for 4, and were taken to our table. Table service was ok. We ordered 2 Hunter chickens and 2 Rump steaks. Both of our steaks were chewy. Grissle in the steak made it probably the worst I have eaten. Pretty disappointed after telling our friends that this was a good eatery. We have been there before and had no problem. The menu seemed smaller as well not much of a choice. We were asked if our meal was ok, about 30seconds after we started eating, and it was not till we started on the steak that we were disappointed. We then were given the sweet menu, which we decided upon, but the waitress never returned, so we paid the bill and left. Will look elsewhere in future.

Meeting up with friends we tried the old farm house a place I'd never been. So place looks great dog friendly and lots of space between tables to provide an element of privacy. Whilst allowing the buzz of a busy restaurant. Very warm welcoming from staff and all in all a good start.

Since moving to Stockton 2 years ago, I've frequented The Old Farmhouse at least 6 times, all on a Sunday for dinners with the family.

Our Sunday roasts were very good. It was busy but the service was quick and the staff were welcoming. Overall a great pub in a nice location.

Exceptional food and value for money staff are also very helpful and willing to do anything to make it a very enjoyable experience which for me goes a long way

Dean, the barman, was very polite and professional. Took drinks and food order at the table and brought everything over. The Hunters Chicken was very good. It came with a 4oz gammon steak which was exceptional. Chips very good as well. This was our first visit for quite some time but we will be back very soon.

Came here for the first time, food was amazing and the restaurant interior is very stylish. Only downfall is the area that is for dining with service kinda took priority had to go back to the bar to ask where our drinks were. Will definitely be back tho :)

Visited here last week for a birthday meal with 5 other “ladies who lunch” all agreed we had a great meal, plenty of choice and manager/owner couldn’t have been more helpful. Will definitely return.

Lovely place for food and a drink. They have a really good range of beverages on draught. The menu had a good selection of dishes and we all really enjoyed our food. The service was excellent, we were served by a nice young lady called Chloe, she was very polite and helpful.

I read the previous reviews with some trepidation especially as the hunters chicken seems to get a slating. Anyway me and my husband went today and ordered 3 courses. He had calamari to begin with - said it was lovely - I had the mushrooms - very nice. Hubby then had the steak pie which was huge. He said the steak was really tender and the mash and veg were also good. I had the aforementioned hunters chicken and you know what - it was lovely. Came with chips which I have to say weren't real chips. But they were OK. Finally we both had desserts - Eton mess for him and choc brownie for me. Both were yummy. With drinks the bill came to just over £50.00. This wasn't the best meal I've ever had but it was tasty and I enjoyed it. Both me and hubby agreed we would come again. The service was friendly and the pub looks nice.

A really nice place, good selection of food, even good choices for the Sunday dinner, decent portion sizes, the staff are lovely and the food is delicious!

We ate here whilst visiting the area for a few nights. The staff were welcoming and friendly. We both ordered the Ribeye steaks. Both were cooked to perfection. We enjoyed the meal that much, before we left we rebooked for 2weeks later and are both looking forward again to a good steak,

We had visited on Mother’s Day for Sunday lunch so thought we would return for tea - my son had steak & chips and I had steak pie. Both meals were great, steak cooked to perfect!

We all thought our meal was very good and would certainly go again. My only criticism was that I like my food a little warmer.

Have to say one of the best pubs I've been to in a very long while. Called in with a friend as we were in the are on a course. The atmosphere was warm and Cosy and we had a wonderful welcome from Andy the manager. On the tables were trivial pursuit cards which made a great conversation starter and something fun to do whilst waiting for food. ( very nice touch!).

There were 3 of us for sunday lunch, who had Sunday roast, The meals were well presented, roasts were delicious, as was the beef, turkey and nutroast. Service was excellent, and we had a dessert, which were Belgian choc brownie with baileys ice cream, Lemon merringue with ice cream and Cheesecake with fruits. The desserts were to die for. Really enjoyed our visit and will be back again.

Visited this place about 5 years ago and was far from impressed with the food or service. However gave it another try, this time it was chalk and cheese, great choice, prompt service and tasty food. 4 adults (1 x veggie) 1 x child, plenty to choose from for us all.

Celebrating my partners birthday so booked here, as eaten here before and it was lovely.

We went here because it was closer to home than its sister pub/restaurant The Tawny Owl. Decor wise it was okay. Food was okay. The girl who served us the food, should really go to the Tawny Owl to be trained by their staff on how to be pleasant to customers.

We dined here on Easter Monday as a party of 5 adults. The restaurant was very quiet, with only 4 other tables however the service was very poor. After placing our order we waited ages for our meal, the two tables around us who had ordered about 15 minutes after us received their meals before us. When we raised this with our server he didn’t apologise and mumbled his answer that they’d be out soon. Upon the food arriving it was very good and the gentleman who brought over the final plates was very friendly, shame the same could not be said for our server! I had the steak sandwich which was cooked perfectly and the sweet potato fries were delicious! One of our party went to the bar to pay and waited ages with no acknowledgement despite there being two people behind the bar and no guests, only upon voicing her concerns did they eventually assist in taking payment. Whilst I can certainly appreciate that sometimes food can be delayed and service can be slow, there is no excuse for miserable staff and no apologies when things aren’t as they should be. As stated, the food was very good but will not be in a hurry to return.

A few years since we were here last-----and after todays meal it will not encourage us to visit in the near future------my wife had the steak pie which she said was ok, but my meal of chicken and mushroom was dry tasteless and lacking in mushrooms, the carrots were soaked in herbs totally drowning any taste of carrot-----I complained but was then told my bill was the full amount, to which I replied its a long time since we have been here but it will be longer before we return-----oh I am sorry sir I paid and left very disappointed and hungry

We went for a meal. Friendly staff, nice beer on tap. Ordered the hunters chicken with chips. Chicken was very flat, cheap cheese half melted on top. Gammon was almost as thin as ham. Chips were severely undercooked and were basically thick potato sticks.

This review confirms my last one about this restaurant/pub. Excellent food once again. Easy parking and in general just a good place to visit for a meal and a drink.

Visited after shopping at local retail park. A busy Thursday evening when we went in. Still great service, if a little slow which I felt was an indication of freshly cooked food. Superb food - would highly recommend the sharing starter - mezze. A new addition since we were last there was a set of trivial pursuit cards on the table - excellent idea.

As always we had a very nice meal. I think that the only downside was being sat near the toilets and a long wait for food, however, the lady serving us was rushed off her feet and there did not seem to be many staff serving. When we voiced our concerns the staff couldnt do enough to help us and make amends. Well done for coping in difficult conditions. My suggestion would be to completely remove that seating area near the toilets and get more staff serving meals. Far too many people for one person to physically deal with.

Visited for meal with my wife not booked just turned up on spec table free service excellent food was even better. The food exceeded my expectations and I would definitely go again. Weekend treat deal is a good idea we took our wine home. Would recommend a visit

Love this pub near Darlo , never had a bad meal and service and nosh excellent.

Had lunch on Friday about 3.30 staff very friendly food hot and fresh and our small dog made welcome with fresh water bowl and treats. Lots of tables where we could sit with him on hard floor area. Only slight negative my wife’s fish pie was very small she doesn’t eat big portions but there was not much fish and even less mash but will definately go again.

Was in tonight as a table of 5 and had a really lovely time. Was very busy for a Monday night and yet we were still served quickly and without fuss. Staff were really lovely, especially a young blonde lady, sorry we didn’t get her name! Food was probably a bit over priced for what it was (my dad said his hunters chicken was a bit dry and the chips weren’t brilliant, but the fish cakes and rump steak were lovely and cooked to perfection!) but wouldn’t stop me coming back. Overall a lovely little meal out :-)

Very impressed with the staff and atmosphere but very disappointed at the choice of hand pulled beer. Also the bottled ale is vastly overpriced.

Dropped in here after a slightly fraught rail station pick-up. Lovely and cosy, dog friendly, friendly service (Dean behind the bar particularly helpful given it was also Valentine’s night and we’d turned up without a reservation, thanks Dean) food was tasty, (though I should take off half a point for frozen chips). Definitely worth a visit, wish it was our local.
