Meat eaters paradise. Steak seems to the dish of choice. Eight of us, all of us with different palates from rare to burnt. Absolutely no complaints from anyone about their dish. That plus great friendly service, what more could you want ?

Arrived on a very wet dark evening with friends.the roads to this place as are everywhere around there very difficult especially when is pitch dark and raining.Beware. The Inn itself is very cosy with a log fire and old church pew seating. The food was okay, i actually had a steak i could eat , where as in France where we used to live were none edible.Hats off to the chef. The evening was spoilt to a degree with a about 6 after work horray farmers boys with identical checked shirts and green wellies who made a conversation unaudable. We had to shout at them to pipe down. The proprioter really should keep control of these types, although he was busy behind the bar.Definately put this pub on your list if visiting the area.

The New Inn came highly recommended as the best Steaks Restuarant around and we were not disappointed. This is an old pub steeped in history and the staff greet you with warmth and alcohol. There is a varied menu and the protions are plentiful . We had the Fillet steak and it was excellent, we asked if it was possible for a pepper sauce but were told it was not required and I was so glad I listened to that advice, succulent steaks that melted away cooked to perfection and didn't need anything to accompany it only my knife and fork. It was complimented by a very nice Malbec. Superb recommendation, not to be missed.

The good - there's no pretense, the menu says what it means and it's served in large platefuls and had I stumbled across this pub I'd have been delighted but it was sold to me as the best steak pub in the area. The kitchen appeared to be having a bad day, the service betwenn ordering and the meal appearing was slow, some of the steaks were a bit sinuewy whereas other were wonderful, five meals arrived instead of six however the sixth meal we were assured was under the grill. The beer was good and the staff friendly. If I could this would be 3 and a half stars. If offered another famly meal there, I'd go but it would be more duty than desire..

A proper country pub in the heart of the South Hams. The fabulous Neats behind the bar (right pronunciation, not spelling) will pour your a very good pint ranging from Cornish Tribute to a cider or glass of Merlot. To celebrate a friend’s birthday, we were driven to this Inn near where they live. Looks nothing from the outside, but once inside the front door the atmosphere is cozy and friendly. We were seated at our booked table right away, on comfy bench seats, with dimmed lighting. Shown a menu within minutes , and drinks brought over whilst choosing from the menu. All four of us chose prawn cocktails and steaks. The presentation was good, portions generous, steaks cooked as ordered.Lovely friendly staff, you are in no way rushed and a great out of the way place to eat a good quality steak which is their specialty.

We were recommended this pub when staying locally. At first sight the pub may not seem what it is so do not be deterred. Once inside and settled there is a real traditional charm, a friendly atmosphere and great service. You need to book - the place was full by 7pm on the Wednesday night that we visited. Overall, a wonderful traditional pub (and dog friendly).

Having lived local for the last few years we were told about this great little pub that served great steaks,so we decided to give it a go.i can honestly say the fillet steak that me and my wife had was fantastic, the guy behind the bar is the right kind of person you need to welcome guests, the only reason I gave four stars instead of five is that the waitresses just don't look or sound like they want to be there, for goodness sake if your working with the public it doesn't take much effort to smile every now and then or maybe a little small talk.Apart from that would recommend any of my friends or family to come and eat here.

We live nearby, and friends had been really enthusiastic about the meals here, but we were disappointed. It was our first time in the pub and really liked it, no background music, unspoilt, welcoming and old style pub. After going to our pre-booked table it was more than 10 mins before anyone came to take our order. The food finally arrived at least 35 mins after that. I had been warned that the menu was basic, no fancy stuff, but the tasty steak was let down by the rest of the meal - ok chips and peas, greasy onions and mushrooms, couple of lumps of iceberg and two slices of hard, raw tomato. There was a puddle of water underneath, not sure if it was from the 'salad' or peas. Don't think we'll bother again.

We both had steak, it was a very good steak, small selection on the menu, but we went in for steak so we weren't too worried about how much food they had to offer, if your a fan of steak this is a great choice, the staff where very friendly and welcoming. A nice old fashioned vibe pub

Real ales and delicious home-made food, particularly if you like steak! I had trout and it was mouthwatering! Lovely landlord, made to feel very welcome. Visited whilst on Holiday, near totnes. Booking advisable.

Four of us had a meal at this country pub. All steaks were cooked to exactly how we requested which doesn't happen often. The whole meal was a delight and well priced. Hospitality was fantastic and the country atmosphere was great. We'll be back again soon as back in the area in May. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

This is a really cosy, traditional, English village pub that does great food and good beer. The people who run the pub are very friendly, relaxed and welcoming. It is relatively small and very popular locally, so you will need to book to get a table most evenings. Parking in the rear car park is limited, but there will be somewhere to stop within easy walking distance in the village. The menu is limited but this works really well, with enough choice for a range of tastes. My friends and I had a mix of dishes, fish, lasagne, scampi and steak, all of which left five satisfied customers. The steak in particular was very good; I had mine cooked rare and I haven't had such a nice steak for many a year. The portions are generous and the prices very reasonable. The cheesecake on the day I visited was also very good, though enough for three!

This is a lovely old fashioned pub in a small village between Totnes and Kingsbridge not far from Halwell.. It only opens in the evening from 18.30. There is a good selection of real ales and good wines. You are warmly welcomed on arrival, If you wish to eat it is safer to book in advance as it is very popular. (01548) 821326. The food is deliberately simple, choice of 3 different steaks or fish all locally supplied. There is a creative vegetarian option. The steaks were wonderful, cooked to perfection with all the trimmings and beautifully served. The portions were very generous I could have done with a bigger plate! My wife and I followed this with a pudding freshly from an extensive menu and under £5 each. This was also very enjoyable ad complimented our meal beautifully. The atmosphere in the bar was very warm and friendly with mostly local people. It is a village pub where you either eat in the bar or the small restaurant area. The service was excellent and the food very reasonably priced. My wife and I would highly recommend it to any traveller

The beer and food selections are intentionally limited which makes choosing easy. Everything they serve is excellent. The exception to the rule is the steak, of which three varieties are offered and all are truly excellent! Traditional Devon village pub food with excellent service

Arrived and had a quiet drink at the bar while waiting for a table. Great start as the Otter Bitter Ale is very mild and tasty.

My husband and I ate here whilst staying in the area. We both chose the starter of smoked mackerel - lovely, but when we saw the size of our main meal portions, both thought we shouldn't have had a starter.

We recently ate here after reading various reviews proclaiming they served the best steaks in Devon. i'm a meat eater and was absolutely looking forward to getting outside a nice slab of beautifully cooked steak. I'm sorry but that wasn't our experience. The night we visited the place was very busy but a good atmosphere and after getting some drinks at the bar we thought we were in for a real treat. What a let down. I had sirloin and my partner had the fillet but unfortunately they got the order back to front as I asked for rare and got medium whilst my partner asked for medium and got rare. To cap it all the sirloin had a nice thread of fat running through it but the steak knife provided was blunt and not able to cut through it. I would have raised both these points with a server but they seemed a bit flustered and actually didn't come near our table again for the rest of the meal.
