The New Five Star in East Ayrshire

AVOID! Ordered crispy chilli with honey chilli sauce x 2 as it was new on the menu. Going by ordering from a different Chinese which is really good was looking forward to try this from the five star as this has been my favourite Chinese restaurant for years. Already have had my thoughts since restaurant been taken over by new owners food and staff overall not the same. Ordered this as a takeaway got home and was immediately disappointed crispy chicken dry in a separate containers opened it up did not look appetising at all coating on chicken just didn’t look right. Secondly the sauce was literally like water never seen anything like it. Tried it but couldn’t eat it absolutely disgusting. The Five Star used to be best Chinese in Kilmarnock but since new owners took over it’s turned five start restaurant into cheap looking and awful food. Definitely not be back and would recommend everyone to avoid.

No Booking, five of us just turned up and were welcomed. The food was very fresh and wholesome It was a Birthday and the staff made an effort with little treats. The menu was varied a we all had what we wanted at a reasonable price.

Met friends for Lunch at Five Star, access is gained by a fight of stairs and we were warmly greeted, shown to our booth and given menus to peruse as our drinks order was taken. As this was Lunch time a special menu was on offer for a three course meal at a cost of £13.20 per person, excluding drinks. The menu was as extensive as the usual menu and after consideration the starters ranged from Chicken Noodle and Cream of Chicken soup along with Prawn Cocktail. Chicken Curry, Szechuan Chicken and Chicken and Pieapple for mains and all opted for Apple Tart and Ice-Cream for dessert. All agreed that the food was of good quality, served piping hot, and the portions were more than ample for Lunch. The Staff were polite and efficient and very pleasant totalk to. The surrounds were clean and smart and the toilets were clean and well maintained. All agreed that the Five Star was a good choice for Lunch and that we would visit again.

Ordered chicken chow mein and a cheng pau chicken, wife's chow Mein ok cheung pau chicken ate some chucked in the bin chicken looked like cheap bits small flat hard bits , special spring rolls got 3 more pastry than filling not worth £23 expected better from a restaurant 👎

As always, Five Star Chinese restaurants are good, and the value for money. They were helping with my niece as she only 5 months old, and nothing was a bother.

Love It by me and my husband we have been in numerous.

First time being in since the place was renovated. Looks really good amd the food still tastes amazing. Best takeaway for over 50 years. Hope Mr Ben is enjoying his retirement. Thank you good Sir.

Food was below average, overpriced and small portions . Staff were rude and unwelcoming.

We had a delivery on a monday evening, they said it would take 45 mins, it arrived 1 hour 10 mins later, the chicken maryland was burnt!! Ended up leaving it, not nice at all, and a total waste of money :( won't ever order from here again! 😒

Pleasantly surprised. Haven't been here for years. Apparently new under ownership. Much better than it was before.

Enjoyed a lovely family get together for my brothers 40’s birthday celebration. The food was good and tasted amazing. We had the 2 course special for £16.95. The portion sizes I felt were on the small size but this was probably because it was the cheap offer we opted for. The Five Star is a staple of Kilmarnock. It’s been around since time began. I love the atmosphere in the place. It’s familiarity is comforting in a strange way. The staff were lovely and very tentative. I’m commenting on the toilets. The men’s urinals are too high. I’ve 30 inch legs and I struggled to use it. I need to grow a few feet ha.

I had food from the lunchtime menu here. It was excellent value with sensible sized portions. All of the food was very tasty and freshly cooked. The service was also very friendly and efficient.

Best Chinese for many miles & only one who makes they're own delicious Spring Rolls that I know of? Never had any complaints about the food, prices or fantastic staff Now under new ownership & decor has changed, but everything as tasty & staff as welcoming as ever See you again soon 😋🥣

went here for a birthday meal . the place looks very dull and dated ? staff very helpful and always smiling. The Tennent beer had a weird taste was drinkable but not sure about taste. about 20 people for a 2 course meal everyone's meals came out on time no one waiting to long and meals hot. sweet and sour Chicken was the best course as the beef curry and fried rice was runny and salty. chips not the best . however the prawn starter was Lovely

Popped in with the girlfriend because she was feeling hungry and I’m glad she was because it was nice only thing that let it down was they don’t have a good selection of draught beer

Originally from Kilmarnock not been to this restaurant in years Food was lovely, as was the service… The service went over and above after we left, when one of the waiters came running after us, I had unknowingly lost a ring at the table…. Then 5 minutes later the same waiter came running after us again, my partner had left his scarf behind Well done Five Star and thank you so much 😊

Place has went down hill really quick been going here for years got a carryout last night and couldn't eat it sweet and sour chicken chicken was very dry and chewy and batter was very overcooked chips came cold and soggy totally put me off going back

All the family are regulars. Highly recommended in many ways.

Again been going to this place for over 30 yrs this is the second time in 4 wks iv had to comment the portions have definitely got smaller instead of chicken satay with fried rice it was chicken satay with dried rice not impressed at all used to be great value for money but gone down hill a bit be going else whare from now on .

Small plates of food food arrived cold. I also don't like the staff standing watching you eating your lunch. I personally won't be back

Great food and choice and good price

One of my favourites restaurants in Ayrshire, the restaurant has been in Kilmarnock for over 50 years and that speaks volumes for its quality of service and food. The restaurant is very authentic and the staff are very friendly, the lunchtime menu is fantastic value and offers something for everyone. The food is absolutely delicious!! I have came here on many occasions and had a fabulous experience each time. If you haven’t tried it you won’t be disappointed.

Meet up with friends and family always a great day

Had our Christmas dinner here and will definitely be back next year. The service was incredible. We didn't have to ask for anything. The food was amazing as always. The price was also great compared to the other places in town.

Used to do a great chicken curry, but lately it's the same as many other takeaways with bog-standard chicken and curry sauce.

Very nice place, very good food, very good service. Decent priced. Upstairs so not wheelchair friendly and no nearby parking facilities.

I freaking love this place. I was visiting from the USA, and was told Chinese food in Ireland/Scotland was the best they have had, and this place does not disappoint. The service is very prompt and friendly. The food is incredible. Nothing I can say bad, even a little nitpicky. Simply amazing.

Arrived in kilmarnock for 1 night , we wanted chinese and so glad we ate here. Staff amazing and the food was delicious and the price was very reasonable . Cannot recommend enough , a must try

Usually very quick with service although seemed to be drowning in take out orders. 10 people waiting for orders, no orders came out for 30mins, and that was after the initial 30minutes we were told it would be ready.

Outstanding!! Now this is what you call good food & a fantastic service. I haven’t came in here in over 10 years and decided to give it a go after numerous times being told by friends and family, I wasn’t disappointed the staff are very pleasant and have a lovely relaxed vibe the restaurant itself has the same vibe very cosy comfortable and relaxing! The food was just wonderful the chicken soup was so thick and creamy with lots of chicken. The curry was outstanding as were the salt & chilli chips and fried rice I honestly can’t fault the place it was outstanding and I can’t wait to return again!!

Ordered took one hour after being told 30 mins. I then call to be told it has left 25 minutes later nothing I call back to be told he's just here . He wasn't and when he did come the price I was told was £15.38 including delivery... then when at the door £18.70. I didn't care I just wanted to eat . Hey ho food stone cold!

Orderd a special curry from here it was pure watery meat was poor packed with onions my stomach was in pain for hours after eating i wont be ordering from here again

Excellent three course meal for £11.20 very quick service and very nice staff. For starters🐓 chicken soup 🍲 char siu fried rice. To finish with banana fritter 🍌 lovely

Best Chinese restaurant in Kilmarnock bar none. Only drawback is that it is up a flight of stairs, so no disabled access. Top of my list!!

Been coming here since 1977 . So I must like it. I find it very good and does not cost the earth. We treated our 14 year old Grandson who gave it a thumb's up . Good value.

Upstairs premises no lift. It is clean has good choice of food, is quite expensive. Staff friendly, very warm in there no a.c or fans or even open windows. From outside does look abit run down blinds shut windows dirty. Chicken curry was very spicy, the beef chow mein was amazing very tasty and could taste the different flavours within the dish.

It's a hit or a miss for take away however we went on 28th July for a lunch, £9.90 for 3 courses, food was lovely owner served us and was very pleasant. Good choice of food for lunch menu. I would have given 5 stars but they gave me beef instead of chicken i ordered cripsy chicken in chilli sauce. i didn't notice until i cut a piece i didnt complain tbh as thankfully i do like beef. also worth noting they dont take card payments under £20.

Was recommended and I have ordered twice. The food is so salty its inedible. First time I though maybe someone was just a bit heavy handed but second time both dishes were drowned with salt - so bad we couldn't eat either dish.

Had to wait 2 years to get back for a good meal. Well worth the wait.

We had a lovely meal from the lunch menu in November 2021. The restaurant has been refurbished to a lovely standard since we were last there before COVID. Highly recommend this Chinese.

Food has gone down hill quite a lot. Instead of a peace of crusty bread with your soup we got half of a finger roll. Dry chicken and the steak was like leather very overdone. They sat a steak knife right in front of a 2 year old. Don't think I will be back.

Went here before we went to the Cinema 🎥. A 3 course meal for a very reasonable price. Have been lots of times before and will continue to do so. No complaints whatsoever.

The staff couldn't do enough for you nothing was 2 difficult for them me and my friend enjoyed our lunch it's the best Chinese in Kilmarnock plus the price is reasonable it was only£9.90 for a 3 course lunch my friend wanted chips and I wanted rice we decided to share the chips and the rice they even provide a plate so that could be done even the dinner menu was reasonable we shall definitely be going back and we have recommended it to other friends.thank you for everything keep up the good work.
