We had a lovely meal last night , great staff beautiful food this was our first visit and will definitely be back soon - we had starters main and dessert plus drinks .

This was our second time visiting The Mill of the Black Monks and what can I say wow wow wow the food again was second to non. Myself and my partner have decided that going forward we will be visiting the Mill for our regular date nights the food was absolutely amazing again and the staff go above and beyond to make sure that the customers are satisfied, and have everything they need. The atmosphere is amazing the restaurant is very intermate and a lovely setting. It's a very relaxing environment, absolutely love the place. Thank you Julie, Chole and Lee without you guys it wouldn't be possible, be proud of what you've achieved. Amazing. See you soon

We stumbled across this place by sheer chance as we were vising the area. where do I start, the place was absolutely fantastic, the service was very friendly and the setting in the old mill was brilliant a very unique place which made our dining experience even more enjoyable. My wife had the lamb shank which was cooked to perfection and fell off the bone myself I had the fillet steak which again was cooked beautifully, for desert I opted for the apple crumble and all I can say is my faith has been restored in this classic desert after a very poor experience at another establishment. Would I vist again? without a doubt, could I fault this place? Not one bit, its a true gem and we'll be back again in a few weeks. Keep up the top work guys your doing everything right!! Best Sunday lunch! We've visited the Mill a lot but this time was our first visit for Sunday lunch. Staff are lovely and welcoming service was quick despite them clearly being fully booked and the food was amazing. Definitely our favourite place thank you!!☺️

This was the first time for us at The Mill of the Black Monks. Manager Julie and her colleague Chloe we're on shift tonight, they we're both very welcoming on arrival, showed us to our seats, we asked if we could have a couple of drinks before we ordered they we're more than accommodating with this we did not feel rushed at all. We asked for information on the menu as to recommendations, Chloe knew her menu and advised on dishes and she recommended some amazing choices, we both had amazing meals. Chloe was very professional, and she showed amazing customer service, she cared for us throughout our time here, she is a great asset to your team.

We were blown away when entering the building as it’s beautifully historic. As a family run business all the staff were lovely and very attentive. The Sunday lunch did not disappoint! Our only critique is we were too full for dessert but will return when next in the area to enjoy the normal menu in the week. Thank you for being the perfect ending to our trip up north.

We ate here for a family meal. The service was good, good selection on the menu, good choice of drinks and the food was fabulous. The bar is very tastefully decorated to reflect the history of the building. The food was very good, with large portions, hot, fresh and tasty. It was a bit pricey, but it was Wednesday and had 15% off, so it wasn't too bad.

Make better at home, beef had no colour and tasteless, the mash looked like it had been under headlamp with a shine to it and luck warm and the cauliflower cheese tasted sour

I've been here a few times and had a good experience previously. Went on Saturday and was not impressed at all. They called us the day before and asked us to pre order our meals, very strange for a group of 6, they said it was to make sure they would have want we wanted. I ordered the trio of lamb (rump steak, best end cutlet and a stuffed lamb breast roulade). It was around 45min before we got our starters, then I was informed that they did not have the lamb steak (so much for pre-order). I was offered and extra lamb cutlet, which I agreed to. when it came there where two cutlets, well they were not what I would call a best end cutlet, I have had a slice of bacon thinker. They were both thin and what meat was on them was well over cooked and the roulade was 60% fat. For a dish price of £28 I would definitely expect a far better culinary experience than what felt like the scraps of the day. I don’t usual complain but I would have said something, not for it being a friend birthday meal. Not sure I will go back… shame

Thank you! ☺️ Visited on 17.07.24 at 18.30pm My partner and I were looking for places to eat and have date night and we stumbled on this beautiful place. We love old buildings and the history behind them and when we pulled up and into the car park, it was just beautiful! The dining area was stunning...the whole time we were there we kept spotting different and quirky things and that in itself was good. STAFF The staff were very friendly from the moment we walked in. There was no waiting about and we were shown to our seats straight away. They introduced themselves but not just themselves but the other members of staff on and who was serving behind the bar. They made us feel very welcome. Thanks Amelia! FOOD We shared the Mediterranean Bruscetta with goats cheese (I'm not really a fan of goats cheese but I ate it) as a starter and believe me when I say, it was more than enough...for us anyway. So I went for the Trio of Lamb which was Lamb Shoulder, Lamb Cutlet and a Lamb Rump served with minted mash, roast carrots and parsnip, tender stem broccoli and cabbage. Put it this way, I finished the lot! It was so tasty 🤤 My partner went for the Beef Wellington, tenderstem broccoli, carrots and normally served with mash but Luke asked for chunky chips instead. The beef wellington was done to perfection (medium) and the chips were homemade!! All of the veg were done perfectly, al dente which is how we have our veg. There is not one bad word I can say about this beautiful place. Luke and I have found our new favourite eating place and will definitely be visiting again to try something else on the menu! Just been for Sunday Lunch and it was excellent. Food was home made. Everything was tasty and vegetables were fresh. The staff are so lovely and friendly and the service quick and efficient. Couldn't fault it and being in such an atmospheric place just adds to the experience. Thoroughly recommend 👌

Excellent. Don't let the kerbside view put you off . Pull into the car park . Large beer garden and an interior that is stacked in history and character. The staff are attentive and friendly and the Sunday roast we had was 1st class .

What a fantastic Sunday lunch and lovely friendly people who were focused on service. My wife who has very exacting standards said it was the best dessert she had ever tasted! A perfect experience in every way. We will return to the area just to eat there!

Everything was great except for the food. That was hit and miss. First time in my life I sent something back… only to get it back again …microwaved for 2 additional minutes…and a remark from the chef (“ that’s the way we do them”&” …better now?”). It wasn’t…but if that’s the reaction to someone speaking up, why bother some more? I guess, I had too big expectations…but a cook who is resistant against feedback can’t be helped. So for food stick to classics (beef Wellington or Jake Daniel chicken) and it will be great, but perhaps avoid anything remotely Mediterranean.

What a discovery!!! This place is truly awesome! The whole look and feel of the restaurant is warm, welcoming and full of charm. It's got an authentic feel too, in keeping with its history. In terms of the food itself, it was faultless. All three courses were well presented, flavoursome and cooked to perfection. The menu has a series of numbers by each item. When I enquires what they were, I was advised that it related to contents, so you could avoid any allegy-related dishes. They can provide a key to the numbers if required. To cap it all, the staff were so friendly, welcoming and attentative. It's a small, family run business, and really really shows. All the staff genuinely care, and want to create the best experience for their customers. On Wednesdays and Thursdays they even offer a 15% discount (as long as you purchase a main course). Even without that, the bill was reasonably priced. Can't recommend this place high enough, and will definitely be returning.....and I hear the Sunday lunch is worth a try too!! 😂

Party of 6, made online reservations and had to pay £60 to hold reservation. Fantastic meal! Great service! 👍 I had the lamb trio (new) and creme brulee for dessert, both recommended by my waitress! Both tasted amazing! We will be back!

My partner booked for Sunday lunch today. We had a starter, main and dessert. Good, well prepared and presented food. Main course was a generous portion. Highlight was pieces of date on the plate with the sticky toffee pudding! Smothered in custard they provided a very nice touch with the sponge. First time I have been in for decades and it did not disappoint. Great ambiance. Great staff. Great food. A unique venue literally oozing history. Recommended.

Heard good things about this place so I decided to try it with my girlfriend. First I thought it was a little over priced but after having my Sunday roast and receiving first class service I know realise its worth every penny. Will definitely be coming again.

Nice quaint pub/restaurant. Food was delayed, but the staff were lovely about it and to be expected on a busy weekend. It was worth the wait, the food was delicious and the prices were reasonable. Only downside was the parking was a bit tight, but there is a park car park over the road. Would definitely go back again!

Somewhere we haven't been for years, even though we are local to the area. Party of 6 for Mum in Law's 81st birthday meal. The staff were very welcoming and attentive and the food was amazing, a lovely touch on the dessert for the birthday lady and an unexpected birthday card from the staff was a really lovely touch and made the occasion even more special.We didn't know that on Wednesday and Thursdays it is 15% off your whole bill so that was also a lovely treat for us! We will certainly go back again.

Visited today after recommendations, and the reviews are correct, the Sunday Lunch was excellent. The food was delivered quickly, was presented well and tasted amazing. The staff team were fabulous, there were plenty of them, they worked well as a team, and the customer service was awesome. Well done everyone, definitely we will be returning!

We have just returned from a family meal to celebrate our son Daniels 30th birthday. Everyone commented on how good their meal was, fresh, tasty, good portions at a reasonable price. Great service from the two waitresses who looked after us. Looking forward to our next visit.

We booked this in advance as we were spending the weekend near there from the menu there was no risotto no salmon no pies and only one duck bought drinks and ask for some table water was told they only did bottled water I had burger it wasn’t seasoned but nice enough duck was overcooked vegetables very hard roast potatoes burnt and chips were scraps although the prawns were very good my daughter had the starter prawns made larger as there was nothing left that was vegetarian very poor food service good but we waited nearly an hour for food didn’t complain just put it down to a bad experience but certainly would not recommend.

Just an absolutely top class service all round, got to be the best gastro pub in England, staff are very accommodating, polite and will have a laugh with you, you don't find that much nowadays..... thankyou, see you again soon 😋

Visited for the first time today for Mother’s Day with my mum/dad and my children after seeing posts on facebook Let me tell you this place did not disappoint The Sunday lunch was devine The service impeccable The waitress Isabella was lovely and told us it’s her dad who is the chef !!!! Not only did she tell him what we said he came to our table to say thank you We also had dessert and the Eton mess cheesecake was simply delicious This place is 16 miles from home but I would travel 61 miles the food is that good See you again soon

This was our first visit and certainly will not be the last, I’ve already got the calendar out to see when I can come back for a steak! I’m from Wath but have lived in Wakefield for over 30 years and have driven past this place what must be several hundred times, but we’ve never been in. Booked it for Mother’su Day dinner and it really didn’t disappoint! It’s a fabulous historic venue to begin with, but the welcome from the team, being seated quickly and fantastic service throughout just shows what a super-professional setup this is. We had a variety of fantastic starters (my halloumi parcels were amazing and 4 of our party thought the garlic mushrooms were ace) and the dinners were fantastic - lots of variety, several vegetables, amazingly succulent meat choices and to quote my dad and son “2 fantastic buckets of gravy!” (They are gravy boats obviously, but big ones!!) Only a couple of people could manage dessert but apparently the crumble and custard was excellent. Fantastic service, great food, real value for money too - can’t wait to come back, thanks everyone.

Fantastic food but truly woeful service. Meal booked for 7.45 and immediately put under pressure to order. Because two members of our party were delayed in traffic (arriving ten minutes late) we were duly informed we couldn’t order starters, only main course and sweets - this after a staff member was spotted shaking her head at us on account of the delay, clearly wanting us in and out asap. How can that be right? The establishment doesn’t shut till 10. Food when it came was excellent. No grumbles whatsoever. All perfectly cooked and piping hot, fillet steak, burger, beef wellington, pork and Lambshank. Constant barracking for drinks with empty glasses removed the instant they hit the table and then staff were hoovering and tidying behind as we had our sweets, obviously still on a mission to empty the premises early and be on their way. Would recommend overall but something seriously needs doing about the awful rushed service.

It was our first visit to the restaurant. We was very lucky as we walked in and got the last table. Next time we will definately book. The Sunday lunch is the best one I've had at a restaurant in about 5 years. The beef was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. My son had the turkey and my daughter had the pork; all cooked equally good. All veg is fresh and the puddings are all fluffy. The deserts were also devine, as was the coffee..... Its fairly priced and all staff are very friendly and make you feel very welcome. The restaurant is an old converted Mill of the black monks and is located across the road from the Monk Bretton Priory which is free to walk around. It's clean and cosy, with historical information. It's just perfect. We will definately return.

Sunday lunch was absolutely gorgeous. Generous serving, slight crunch to veg very tender beef and hot. Dessert was divine Eton mess cheesecake in a glass! Coffee was a generous size and also hot! Service was polite friendly and very attentive. Definitely going back worth the extra few ££ 👏👏❤️

Booking - easy to complete the booking online. On arrival we were greeted by the very friendly team and seated at our table, drinks were served very quickly. The dining area is beautiful and a very relaxed area, not too close to the next table, brilliant atmosphere. Menu a good selection to choose from. I had a starter of - Grilled halloumi & asparagus wrapped in prosciutto ham and micro salad, the Halloumi wrapped in the ham was very nice along with the warm asparagus, very nice indeed. Main – I selected Beef and Pork which was also served with buttered mashed potatoes, cauliflower cheese, roasted carrots, tender stem broccoli, leeks, garlic roast potatoes, giant Yorkshire pudding, sausage meat stuffing, pig in blanket meat juice gravy and it was FABULOUS. Having had a starter and main I did have to squeeze in a pudding. Sticky Toffee pudding and custard was the choice and it was the right choice, it was lush. Throughout the visit the waiting staff were fantastic, very attentive ensuring our visit was the best, the service we received was of a very high standard. Visited today for the Sunday dinner. A birthday treat. Really enjoyed it. The food was beautiful. Sunday dinners all round. Everything was really good. Really enjoyed the gammon. All of the staff are a credit to the owners, they couldn't do enough. Table for 8 and everyone left very happy. Sticky toffee pudding is a winner. Just to add- probably one of the best pints of guinness I've ever had. Thanks for a great afternoon 😀

I had the sirloin steak and my friend had the beef wellington. My steak was cooked perfectly and so were the chips and all the trimmings. My friend said hers was one of the best meals she’d ever had. Couldn’t fault anything.

Fabulous meal! Went for Valentines night and had the Winter Menu - we came from Wakefield as we had heard such good things, everything was gorgeous. A beautiful historical venue with a real cosiness and charm! Chloe our waitress couldn't do enough for us and was very attentive all evening. I had the chicken supreme which should have come with Dauphinoise potatoes but it came with roast potatoes instead ( nobody made me aware that they had run out or had changed them) but they were equally as nice so didn't really bother me! I would highly recommend visiting - My partner talked about the beef wellington and monks beer all the way home! We will be returning as we loved it so much, thank you!

Just an update..... popped in again for meal recently, food still as good as ever. Beef Wellington is amazing!.....Went for a meal last night. We must of driven past the Mill hundreds of times in the past and always said we should try it but never have until now. Plenty of off road parking and was greeted with a warm friendly welcome that made you feel at home in the pleasant historical converted Mill. The Staff were informative over the menu which showed they cared about the food and this can be more obvious when it arrived, presentation, size & taste was excellent. Easily go again in near future.

Family meal out for one of our daughters birthdays. Not been before. Everything was good, service, friendliness, and of course the food. Sunday Roast lots of choices, big plates with plenty of tasty, vegetables roast and mashed potatoes, stuffing and pigs in blankets with plenty of gravy on the table to help yourselves. We could not manage a dessert just too full, but next time we will ask for smaller plates so we can have a treat after.

Wow this place is just amazing . We have visited here a lot lol . My boyfriend always orders the stake said he’s never had anything like it in his life . I’ve had duck . Stake pie . Burger. We went last night for my son’s birthday and they brought him a dessert out with his name written on it and a lovely candle. Best Sunday dinner I've had in ages. Really can't fault it. We had a big table about 16 with kids. Reordered service was faultless, quick, polite and accurate nothing was missed or any trouble. Food was amazing. Best beef I've had on a Sunday dinner and everything else was bang on veggie, yorkshire puddings mash and gravy, really good. Didn't have a dessert or starred but others on our table did and said how good they were too 16 happy people at the end. Will definitely be back

Well where do I start, the food was lovely the waitresses couldn't do enough for you , but I was disgusted in how management I believe she's called Julie spoke to her staff. Publicly humiliating them at any given chance ! Me and my friends won't be returning again due to this behaviour.

This is the second time I have eaten at The Mill of the Black Monks this year. Firstly I had a business meal. The roast dinners we ordered were exceptional. What a fabulous venue to have a meeting! Because I enjoyed it so much, I brought my family yesterday for a special treat and that it was. The children's portions were excellent, the steak pie and burgers were so good, really excellent quality meat. But the most important thing of all was the service. The same young lady served me in both visits. She was so personable, nothing was too much trouble. You cannot put a price on that… The bill on both occasions was very reasonable, we will be back. Thank you & Merry Christmas 🎅🏻

Excellent food and service Also what an amazing building Theonly downside is that there are a lot of stairs to get down to the toilet (I understand that's just a personal problem and it was worth it just to eat in such an amazing place)

Love coming here for Sunday lunch, it’s just a shame that they never change the vegetarian option. The vegetarian wellington is a mushroom filled pastry which doesn’t go at all with a Sunday lunch and the meatless version is no less expensive.

First wedding anniversary meal, booked because we had seen quite a few people we know recommending this place. We had prawns and garlic mushrooms for starters, very pleasant but mushroom sauce a bit thinner than expected and I didn't query the inclusion of the parmesan...

Lovely atmosphere, plenty of space, amazing food, friendly staff. This is my first time here and I'm certainly going to come back again. I would highly recommend it for anyone looking for great service and great food. Portions were perfect.
