This is a church cafe run by volunteers. It says it is an outreach cafe and an asset to the community - but this is hardly the case when the prices are off putting and more expensive than most cafes run as businesses. A very poor cappuccino cost £3.40 and my baked potato was nearly £8. It is set up in a church hall and the volunteers are pleasant but not exactly efficient (my baked potato was left on an adjacent table until I asked where it was). All the members of our table had their food delivered at different times so some were finished before others had started (we ordered together).

No frills, just good food and old fashioned service. Soups, sandwiches, home baking and a great play area for children.

Friends and I went to this place today, for a very tasty home cooked meal. I had a delicious 'Cream of Tomato ' soup with wholemeal bread, then a yummy Coconut Victoria sponge cake. Served by helpful, happy volunteers. Thank you

We happened across the coffee shop at The Mill at St Josephs in Balerno when walking the Water of Leith. Quite a find - lovely cakes and bakes and superb coffee all at rock bottom prices. Well worth calling in to fuel up before walking . They do soup and sandwiches too.

Run by Balerno Church, The Mill is a great addition to village life. Cafe operates in the recently restored and renovated St Joseph' s centre. It is bright, attractive, has excellent 'facilities' and the staff, mainly volunteers, are friendly and helpful. Great place for a coffee and scone or a light lunch. Highly recommended!

Had afternoon tea with my sister who has never had one before due to not ever eating any spreads or mayo her whole life aged 66. There was no problem ordering half with butter other half dry, everything made to order. All very fresh, lovely soft bread & very tasty. You get a lot of food we were both very full. We were using a voucher that was a Christmas present. My sister & i will definitely be back. Staff lovely & very helpful. Best afternoon tea in Edinburgh x
