We went for lunch and had a very pleasant meal. A lovely old pub with good dining spaces and a nice garden. Good menu plus a specials board made for a good choice. Fish and chips and crispy chilli beef were our choices and both were very good with generous portions. Service was friendly and efficient. No car park but lots of on street parking so no issue there. Will certainly consider visiting again in the not too distant future.

We found The Mermaid by googling the best roast dinner nearby and we weren't at all disappointed. It was on a par with the best roast dinner we've ever had and was also reasonably priced. In addition, the service from the lovely staff was excellent and the pub was very quaint with a roaring log fire. We will definitely return and we will tell everyone we know about this little gem.

We arrived unannounced at The Mermaid. For the first time. We were welcomed wonderfully by the front of house. He showed us to our table and ensured all was well. The menu, including a specials board, was excellent. The food was perfect. The service was better. Sadly, we do not live nearby so this was a one off. But the memory we have is delightful. This place was a little gem of find, we wanted a cosy country pub to stop at and that's exactly what we found! We travelled over from Shropshire to come for a last minute 2 night stay here and spend some time together away from the kids and it could not have been more perfect! From the minute I phoned to book all staff were friendly and accommodating. Lovely welcome on arrival as we were shown to our room. We ate here both nights for evening meal and it was great tasty food very reasonably priced and big portions and great friendly service with the lovely added touches like bread to start and mince pie and limochello to finish! Food came quickly too despite the busy pub! The room was perfect with a lovely selection of continental breakfast laid out ready enough for the 2 mornings with fresh milk and drinks in the fridge. A lovely walk around the local reservoir was beautiful too! Chris and his team were great and made it all very enjoyable for us. Many thanks 😊

I have never felt the need to report via this media before but I have to say having just attended the Mermaid Ellington for a Birthday Sunday lunch and I have to say I will never recommend or repeat the experience again. We booked for 2pm for 6 persons and arrived 10 minutes early, we were basically shown in to a back room and forgotten until we searched out a member of staff to order our drinks and whilst waiting it was noted a number of flies on the furniture and walls..... eventually some time later our drinks arrived and then a further long wait for anybody to take our food order....... the food eventually arrived at 3.15pm some of which in my opinion looked as if it had been reheated a number of times.Having finished what we could of the main course ......another chase for someone to take our sweet order followed another lengthy wait until the sweet eventually arrived, it looked like something you would buy from a popular frozen food supermarket, not impressed. In summary the service was very very poor and the food below that which I would have expected having seen the website, we eventually left at 4.25pm never to return for sure

The beef was the best we had had in year and it was a good portion. We all thoroughly enjoyed. Came here for a meal in 2019 and only just got on to give my opinion. I feel like they need to figure out what sort of restaurant they are. It's a very nice idea the silver service waiting but doesn't mix well when you've also got punters at the bar 5 feet away being loud. Decide what you are, the staff were very nice but I could tell they were run ragged. Seems like most other start up restaurants that try it in a village in the middle of no where, dreams become before logistics. Love the food and the chef is clearly good at what he does but I think his talent is wasted in this tiny village

This is the best place to eat after walking or cycling around the nearby Graham Water (8m). Its a great pub which has kept its character and is very close to the A14.But the reason I was so chuffed was the 6 star service we enjoyed. We turned up to discover the water was off in the pub and the wider village.(There is some irony to this as its only a couple of miles away from Graffham reservoir.)Most pubs would have shut their kitchen. But the Mermaid bent over back wards to make sure we had a great meal and then knocked off £20 because they couldn't give us carrots or sorbet with the food we ordered. The soft shell crab starter with lemon and lime sauce was stunningly good, and beautifully presented. The pork belly roast was equally good - very tasty with some great Yorkshire puddings and some really unusual broccoli puree. My bread and butter pudding was good .But I was outdone by my wife's Kalamansi tart which is apparently a citrus fruit from the Philippines. She just loved it. And the wine of the week which was available by the glass was just as good. This place was really special. And on the strength the great service, we are now going to return for they tasting menu - I can't wait.

We have eaten here a couple of times recently and always had great food. The restaurant is part of the pub, or vice versa. Very homely. A small bar with a few tables dotted about and a separate room with more tables in the back.We didn't book and luckily got a table near the bar. The service wasn't quick but was fast enough. The good thing was you felt all the food was freshly cooked. We ordered two pigeon and one crab starter followed by steaks all round (I think) near enough all the sides including tiger prawns, halloumi sticks etc. Finally a dessert selection including jaffa cake soufflé and deconstructed cookies and cream. All the food looked and was presented fantastically. Only downside was the cookies and cream was almost too deconstructed and some of the parts of it seemed bland unless eaten with something else which was a shame as I guess took ages to make and present. Nevertheless all in all, a great night. Excuse some of the photos. Oddjob looks like he is paying to the soufflé. Bad picture. Would I go again? Definitely. Enjoy

We came here for our wedding anniversary as we thought it would be a bit special. Its a quaint little venue. Its a village pub basically. Not a lot of room but nice enough. Staff were lovely but it felt awkward on entering as we said we had a table booked, but then weren't told what to do about it. We were asked if we wanted a drink and ordered but then just sort of hung around the bar area waiting expectantly. We were shown to the restaurant area after a while. The kitchen is visible so if you feel like standing up and peering in at the chefs its perfectly possible to do so. If you get the spot seat next to the access door to the kitchen though I imagine its really, really annoying. The menu isn't extensive, so we just thought we'd try the tasting menu. Its £95 for two, so its pretty steep but for a special occasion we thought we'd give it a go. Worth pointing out, the staff were great and we weren't left waiting for very long for any course. The food was without exception beautifully cooked and presented. The problem was, neither of us really liked any of it. Apart from the soda bread. That was tasty. The octopus chowder wasn't really what I think of as a chowder, but they know more about food than me so I'll let that slide. It was ok. Nice enough. They did a take on duck pancakes, which was pleasant. Probably the best course. Then we had monkfish with bombay style potatoes and curry sauce (too strong, unpleasant even) I'm not sure what the puree was, but neither of us enjoyed this course, although again it was cooked and presented beautifully. And the papadum style crisp was nice. There was a lemon sorbet, which was so bitter I couldn't stand it. None of the other items on the plate could detract from that. Then the desert was cookies and cream. Far too sweet. Too much on the plate even for a sweet tooth like me. Husband doesn't have a sweet tooth and barely touched it. I think we've watched too much Masterchef, as I couldn't help thinking 'its not balanced enough'. Like I'd know. All in all though, I was disappointed, as I was hoping for amazing new flavours, and a fabulous foodie experience, and I felt like I should have just gone to our local Thai place and picked a new dish. I wouldn't return, but maybe we're just not sophisticated enough for fine dining.

Really didn't expect the high quality of both food and presentation in such a quiet location. There are two dining areas plus the small bar area packed into this super quaint little pub. I had the soft shell crab and the chicken - both 9/10 excellent. Service was ok - a little formulaic - the exact same words said to each customer - nothing at all wrong with it but after 2.5 years in Canada you get used to service of a fairly universally high standard.

Visiting this venue with a friend, who had recommended it, l was not disappointed in the least. The Pub is quaint. The food awesome and innovative. It's not cheap but if you really want to quibble about the price of exceptional food? perhaps you should be going to one of those cheap, tacky and totally unappetizing pubs, you'll save loads of money at the expense of edible food. On the other hand, if you want to go somewhere ? which is going to tantalize your taste-buds and look visually artistic, this is for you. It's a sad indictment on life that these types of top spots are rare.

Family gathering of about 16 including children and a dog. Wonderful decor if old beams and what looked like a wood burning fire. Staff were very friendly. The food was not traditional pub grub and that reflected in the price. The food was different varieties like fish and chips a Jamaican meal, curry or burger, there were other choices. Felt the dessert was a bit expensive so didn’t order. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. Dog biscuits in a basket on the bar. Our dog was allowed to sit by us when eating. But obviously it had to behave. They provided a children’s menu. And on the table was a list if cocktails, if you fancied one. There is a garden with benches but was a bit too cold for us to try out. Had wanted to try Sunday lunch for a while. What a disappointment. We stood at bar for at least 20 minutes being served two drinks. The young staff got our order wrong. positive the wine I eventually got was very tasty.

Room was good clean tidy . The food was top drawer , but not cheap. Main courses about right , but deserts where too expensive at £9. Good job I was on my own would not wanted my wife to hear the foul language going on by the customers at the bar.

We visited here tonight and we loved it. We wanted to go somewhere a little more special and had heard good things about The Mermaid. The rumours are true and the food is excellent, if you were served this food in a city like Cambridge or London you’d be expecting to pay through the nose for it but it’s all very reasonably priced.

Our favourite restaurant ever for special occasions. The chef was trained in a 4 star rated restaurant, and it shows. The food is visually stunning as well as delicious, and so fresh. The chef came out to the garden to pick edible flowers for desserts! Great staff. Lovely building. Fantastic food. Can't recommend highly enough.

Very friendly atmosphere, exquisite food, fast service. I came in for lunch yesterday and had the pakora, brisket and the white chocolate fondant. honestly some of the food I’ve ever eaten, without a doubt the tastiest food in the area. The flavour pairing is absolute genius and clearly prepared and presented by a true professional. My dessert was absolutely amazing, who ever cooked it must be a truly skilled human being with an amazing eye for plating dishes up. The food and service was brilliant, and surprisingly affordable. Would recommend!

I visited on a busy Thursday lunch for a post results day meal. The service and kitchen seemed rushed but still provided beyond excellence, the staff were police, attentive and humorous making jokes with the table which really set the atmosphere. The food was excellent and cooked to perfection, I highly recommend The Mermaid to everyone.

The Mermaid was recommended to us my a friend for our anniversary meal last week. We didn't book but the man at the bar was nice enough to get us a table last minute. VERY impressed with the service we received throughout our meal and the food was to die for! The wine menu is massive and the staff recommended a lovely wine to compliment our dish. Very gorgeous little bar and restaurant was uniquely decorated, love the theme they've gone for. We were sat in the middle part and were able to see through into the kitchen, AMAZING! My husband and I loved watching the chefs in action. The meal was overall very much worth the money (if not a little expensive) but we would eat there again.. and most likely will in the future!

This is my second trip to The Mermaid and was once again a very happy person leaving. Food beautifully presented and flavours that kept on going. I enjoyed the Swordfish dish which I am told will soon be Marlin. A lovely twist of oriental flavours with pomegranate. Very much enjoyed the lychee tree which is a presentation you have to experience!! Attentive service with an incredible vast wine list, it is worth the visit just for this! Will absolutely be visiting again!

Completely agree with BirdandBean review recently. Customer service was poor and we had to ask for the water that was offered. The chef walked through a few times but didn't acknowledge any of the customers except a group of young ladies who I presume were locals. I ordered the fillet of butternut squash as a vegan option and expected it to be a creative steak equivalent but was just a thick chargrilled slice with a few chunky chips and lots of thin crispy onions. These accompanying watercress salad as per the menu was barely a tablespoon full. At £18.50 definitely not worth the money unfortunately. My partner had katsu chicken burger that was dry and a side of tempura prawns that was not tempura batter. I had to look at a untidy open storage cupboard throughout my meal as door was left open. Heard lots of good things about the Mermaid and always wanted to try but left very dissatisfied and not worth the £50 spent (no alcohol included). I called in advance to book a table and was greeted by only a hello. I had to ask if it was the Mermaid, reply was 'yes'. I had to lead the conversation. Not ejst I expect from any restaurant. I don't often write reviews but felt it important to make the owners aware although I note they haven't commented on other reviews so guess they're just content with the positive reviews. Would recommend the George at nearby spaldwick instead and much more affordable with better quality food. Would question if the Michelin star is still current.

I have stayed in the Mermaid accommodation over 12 times now in 2019 due to local work commitments. They don’t open on a Monday so checking in has become a nightmare, rooms not cleaned and left with the remnants of previous guests, including their used bedding. Add to this noisy staff with little to no regard for people staying in the rooms and whoever is now living above the pub deciding to play music after 11.30pm, slam doors and squeal and laugh around the rooms with no regard for paying guests.

We have been searching for a great food experience in our area as there are slim pickings locally. The Mermaid was recommended to us by various people and we were excited to be able to get a table that very weekend and with a Michelin star trained chef! The bar was deserted and yet there was some hubub coming from a room beyond which we assumed was the dining room. Out table was in the bar area and we felt somewhat out of the action. On mentioning it the young staff helpfully managed to find a table in the rooms with the others. A word about the arrival experience....the young staff were chattering in a group when they were not serving and we really didnt want to have to hear this when dining, which was also part of the reason for wanting to move out of the bar. I suspect it would feel very different if the bar had other diners. The decor in the bar is nice, simple and in keeping with an old buidling but the eating rooms beyond are rather tatty. We were not terribly bothered by this as we felt the food would outshine it all. Service was disjointed and some training is needed here. We were asked if we wanted water at the table but it did not arrive. We asked twice more. Third time lucky. We were never once asked if we wished to order wine and had to flag someone down. For an expected fine-dining experience, the food was average I'm afraid. I ordered a souffle and expected it to arrive fluffy and jaunty in its ramekin, but it was served on a plate rather like a mousse from a mould. The flavour was good and the little grape and walnut salad was nice. My husband's crab was also ok he thought. My Stroganoff was very well flavoured, excellent mushrooms and the rice was tasty. It was a little tough ,though, and there needed to be a bit more sauce. My husband had pulled lamb and he thought it was good but no 'wow factor'. We were a bit underwhelmed, and although the food was fine, it was not as we had hoped. We had been prepared to pay for a really great eating experience. We left out of the back door to look at the garden which is also tatty and untidy. It could be so pretty. Overall, based on the reviews and expectations from the website, we were disappointed.

Having been to the Mermaid before and had interesting food in a nice atmosphere , although, i have always been confused by the Chef's thread as some of the flavours are odd. All that said , my husband and I turned up yesterday evening for an 2000 table , ordered drinks and were shown to our table , our table that was in the walkway into the pub and might as well have been in the bar ! oh well we thought it isn't that busy it will be fine but it wasn't - being stared out by a huge and I mean huge dog in the bar which was 5 feet away , I love dogs but this was a bit much . Our orders taken we weren't offered the wine list but were offered a £95 for 2 tasting menu ! .... the nibbles arrived, we hadn't finished and the starters were plonked down ! - and the bar was getting louder and those at the bar ( 2 feet away) were having an in depth conversation about power showers ! - the waiter then return - please could we repeat my husbands order ? - but you wrote it down - anyway we repeated it . The bar got louder, other diners came in and went to the dining room .... not sure why we were parked in the walkway at all. Meal finished and it was pleasant food , we paid and left . As we paid we mentioned to the waitress that we were disappointed with the table - hardly an acknowledgement but she said she would note it on our details which were saved from the booking we made ( don't remember giving permission for this ) but we won't be back for a while - if The Mermaid wants to be a restaurant it needs to consider the environment it's diners are seated in - if it wants to a pub and serve pub food then leave the table in the walkway . Very disappointed .

Visited for an adult birthday, what a lovely place, we could recommend it to anyone. The food was first class, a good idea to price the courses separately, not everyone can eat the full monty. Service was pleasant and efficient, also. A good selection of soft drinks for the drivers. Well done we will be back.

Looking for somewhere to join family for Sunday lunch mid way between our homes. Found The Mermaid and what a find. With 2 drivers in the party it was good to see a wide choice of soft drinks available. For those who like ale there was a reasonable choice and wines available were excellent.
