A beautiful place, cozy, quiet, you breathe calm. We spent the night in our car and in the morning we had a super classic breakfast from the area, generous and very delicious dishes. They allow dogs. When we visit England again, we will return. Thanks to the restaurant for offering this service.

I guess it's all about location and there's no doubt this old place is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Cambridgeshire. Overlooking the Great Ouse, this ancient fenland Inn serves mainly boaters and the odd local. The garden is a great spot in the summer and it makes a good watering hole for anyone who can either float, hike, ride or drive. Unfortunately under the bonnet, it's a pretty standard Green King pub, with no local ales, no guest ales and a poor selection of rum (only 3). It dictates your tastes, rather than introduces and the Saturday staff were both sleepy and under confident. The chipped and dirty glasses only added to the sombre atmosphere inside, such a shame! Outside, it buzzed with dog walkers, kayakers, families and those looking for that quintessential, English Inn. I hope they were not as disappointed as us.

I booked a function room at the Ferry Boat Inn for ~40 people for my Dad's 70th birthday party. Julie and Connor were very communicative, friendly and accomodating in the organisation. Despite having hurt his leg the week before, Lee, the head chef, couldn't do enough to help us. The food was good (potatoes with the salmon slightly too al dente!) and there were plenty of vegetarian options. I was able to go in beforehand and decorate the room, and the cakes we made were kept in the cold room until we needed them. We took along an amp and microphone and had some speeches and music. Staff were very attentive all evening and we had a great time. Thank you very much!

Really disappointed at the lack of customer service received. I ordered two coffees, 2 cokes the guy behind the bar never once said please or thank you. He put down two coffees and the cokes. I asked for some milk for the two black coffees he put down he just looked at me and said that’s extra if you want milk. I said that I ordered what I belied to be two coffees not americanos. But he told me no an americano is a coffee. That I was wrong. The expresso cup of milk was an extra 75p There was no politeness at all and others at the bar commented about paying extra for a smile! What happened to a smile and a please and thank you? Having worked in hospitality I would have never spoken to a customer in this way. I would have certainly given the customer a choice at the time of ordering. Unfortunately when poring the milk in the warm coffee it split. No I didn’t bother returning, goodness knows how I would have been spoken to if I’d of asked for a fresh hot cup!

Went down the Ferry Boat for a couple of drinks. The place has been at rock bottom for a few years now but still continues to pull off the feat of plumbing new depths. Outside in the beer garden was an utter mess, litter everywhere, an overflowing rubbish bin and all tables with glasses and dinner plates not cleared away. On going inside the picture is the same - empty glasses lining practically the whole length of the bar. In the midst of this was displayed a sign listing about a dozen menu items that were unavailable. The lone member of staff was doing his best to serve customers queuing at the bar. Meanwhile a lady returned her table's empty plates to the bar, no doubt fed up waiting for someone to come and collect. The usual poor selection of beers on tap - Greene King IPA and Abbott - both undrinkable as far as I'm concerned. A few years ago a guest ale was always available, nearly always far preferable to the standard GK choices. What has happened to this? The depressing thing is this is not a one-off. Like most people in the village I hardly ever go to the Ferrby Boat these days but on each occasion I have it has been in this miserable state. The pub has been through a succession of managers in recent years, none of whom have managed to turn things round so it's clear Greene King are at fault. The Ferry Boat should be the flagship pub in the entire chain but the truth is they just don't care.

I briefly visited the Old Ferry Boat this Sunday around 11AM with the intention of having coffee and perhaps a meal. According to their website, food service begins at 8AM on Sundays. Based on a previous visit where we didn't need a booking, we thought it would be fine to stop by with my mum, who had always wanted to visit. Seeing people seated at the outside tables when we turned up, we made our way inside. Unfortunately, this visit will be our last. Upon entering, I was shocked to be addressed from across the room by a staff member who informed us that food service only began at 12PM and asked if we had a booking. When we explained that we didn’t, they curtly told us that they were fully booked, and that was it. The three of us looked at each other in disbelief and confusion. As someone with extensive experience in customer service, I was appalled by the lack of basic courtesy. Speaking to us from a distance, the staff member showed a clear disinterest in our presence. There was no offer of a drink despite our travel to the establishment, no suggestion to book for a later time, and not even a simple greeting so we turned around and left very disappointed. It wasn't even the fact we didn't get what we came for that is the problem, it was how we were treated that was the issue. Whoever the staff member was on that day, Costa thanks you for our custom but instead of enjoying a lovely picturesque beer garden, we spent part of our morning staring at a car park in St Ives, sipping coffee from a chain café. This experience was deeply disappointing and poor reflection of a beautiful pub that could be so much more.

Lovely location and building. Overall lunch experience was disappointing. Crumb coated mushroom starter was partly cold. Pate starter had just one small piece of toast so had to ask for another piece to be able to enjoy the amount of pate. My partner and I both had Hunters Chicken but both were over cooked and quite tough. Cutlery blunt and tarnished. Mixture of many different chair types at dining tables which, whilst charming in some respects, proved uncomfortable and made the dining area tired looking. Unfortunately not many staff on day of booking so service was rather slow. Such a shame for a building of such age and character. Would love to visit again but things would need to improve.

Being from the local area we've visited this pub many times over the years and it saddens me to see how much it's gone downhill. It's a beautiful pub in a fabulous location but has been very let down by the frequently changing managers over recent years. We popped in for food on a lovely warm Friday night, it was busy but not overly so with plenty empty tables. We hadn't booked as we've never needed to except for Mother's Day and such like however we were told they weren't taking any walk ins. Given the warm weather and the start of school holidays, one would expect them to be better prepared, instead we had dinner at another lovely riverside pub half a mile away. Went back on Sunday, just for drinks, and what a mess! Outside there were tables full of dirty glasses and plates which weren't cleared during the whole 2 hours we were there. Several dirty glasses at the bar, which were still there when we left, outside bins overflowing and the toilets were scruffy with rubbish and toilet paper strewn across the floor. Such a shame as this gem of a pub used to have a great reputation whereas now it's quite the opposite.

For those of us who live in the area the history of the Ferry Boat in recent years has not been a happy one. There was a time, before Greene King got hold of it, when it was well run and doing the basics was a given. Yesterday evening was Monty Python's Cheese Shop sketch come to life in a pub. There are only ever 2 real ales available. Abbott was off when we arrived and the barrel of IPA ran out just after we ordered 2 pints and were seeking a third. A new barrel was put on later, but we have a very strong suspicion that the barrel had only just been delivered to the pub that day. The other drink I wanted to order was a lime and soda, but no lime cordial available. One of our small party turned up a little late, hence I returned to the bar to order another pint and a packet of crisps, but had to wait 5 mins before any member of staff appeared (it was very tempting to serve myself!). As a one-off, hey these things happen. The issue is that this sort of problem has become routine at the Ferry Boat in recent years and it feels as if the annual increase in customers due to summer somehow catches the pub by surprise. The fundamental for a pub is to have a supply of drinks and provide timely service. That's what justifies the prices charged. The Ferry Boat loves to play up it's long history and how it's reputedly England's oldest inn. Yet after arguably 1000 years Greene King still can't get the fundamentals right. The location is in a great setting with a very affluent local population on it's doorstep. Unfortunately most of that population despair about Greene King's management of the Ferry Boat. If Greene King is unable to run the location to it's full potential, which starts with getting the fundamentals right, please allow someone else to do so. There are plenty of pubs around that are well run, are well staffed and provide a level of service that attracts a lot of repeat business. That's what the Ferry Boat used to be like many years ago. Regrettably the dead hand of Greene King is upon it.

Beautiful location, however a lot of the tables outside hadn’t been cleared and ashtrays were full to the brim. Waited at the bar for over 10 minutes and no sight of any staff and when they did turn up they were not happy. We ordered two starters which were not expensive nor were they cheap, but when they arrived it was shocking. If you’re after sitting by the river with a drink then this is a nice spot but the service is awful.

Stayed here for a weekend break, near cambridge, staff are very nice, especially Connor, who was professional, polite, and knowledgeable, the food was good and they are large potions, especially the breakfast. Only criticisms are the fan downstairs in the kitchen can be heard in your room, this noise carries on until 10-10.30 in the evening. Also, in our room, the shower head over the bath was held up there with tape, so I had to try and hold it up to get the water to go onto me instead of just hitting the wall which is why I have only given 4 stars.

Nice tucked away pub near the river. We have been a couple of times and it was a bit messy early Sunday evening and seemed short of staff to clear tables. Felt for them as they were working flat out and the small team were friendly. Had the sea bass pea & mint risotto, meatless burger which was ok ( sides were skimpy) The Camembert sharing platter which is great vfm and guests enjoyed it. Cherry Bakewell dessert - ewwww. Tasted very processed. The glasses were very badly marked from dishwasher. Bit yuk but kept quiet about it as staff busy busy & overall the pub service is good. Overall this is typical Greene King vibes. See the menu so often and there’s something for everyone on it to fill a hole. We went there for a Sunday roast, but unfortunately, we were very, very disappointed. Firstly, we ordered 2 pints of larger here comes the first problem. The first pint was OK, but sadly, the second pint was as flat as a pancake when I complained we were given a new pint, but unfortunately, that was flat too. Then, the bartender was very rude and argued we didn't know what we were talking about. Bad mistake as we were landlords We then asked for a menu, and it was just chucked on the bar in front of us. We ordered our roasts and then sat down. After a few minutes, a waitress came to our table with 2 meals, but sadly, not ours, she then spent the next few minutes going from table to table asking if the meals were theirs. Sadly, this happened twice more before we got ours. We wished we had accepted one of the other meals as what we were seved was the worst roast dinner ever. Not only was it inedible, but unfortunately, everything that was on the menu that came as part of the roast meal wasn't on the plate, The beef was more fat and gristle than actual beef, saying that the gristle and fat were more edible than the actual beef. We were recommended by friends about how nice the pub was, sadly it wasn't as expected. I know mistakes happen, but unfortunately surly not to that extent.

This place seems to get good reviews so maybe we just came on a bad day, but it was nearly 45 minutes before we got our food, and nearly 30 minutes between our starter and the main course. The prawns in my prawn cocktail tasted of basically nothing, and the chips with my main course were dry and tasteless. When my wife asked for the gluten-free menu she got a very dismissive " scan the QR code on the main menu". When she couldn't do that because there was no phone data signal, she went back to the bar and a different member of the bar staff handed her a paper copy of the gluten-free menu, so there was actually a paper menu available all along. Walked through a large room, looked like an unused function room, very messy. The door to the stairs was in need of paint!! We were given room 5, oh my goodness what a dreary room, it was dark, unwelcoming, could not think of spending two nights there, went back down stairs, and spoke to the young lady, we got moved to room 1, yes lighter, better view, but compact is an understatement, it looked like a single room having a double bed, no room for bedside cabinets.Nothing like the one on the website. The bathroom was a struggle to use due to the size of it, shower temperamental, in need of an upgrade!! Food and service was good, but did run out of some of the things on the menu (risotto on Saturday, roast beef and pork on Sunday), breakfast was good, however little choice on the continental side, missing items on both mornings. Would consider visiting again if they sort the rooms out, as it’s in a lovely area.

Lovely evening spent at the Ferry Boat. There was 13 of us eating so we had booked ahead and had been asked to preorder our meals. The food was hot, as described and very tasty. We were celebrating a birthday and we were allowed to bring a cake and they brought it out to us after the meal and provided plates. We were all happy with our experience, the staff were friendly and welcoming and the pub had a lovely atmosphere.

We had not been to the Ferry boat for some considerable time, as past experience regarding service and food very poor. However took friends yesterday for lunch, and service and new food menu excellent. Let's hope it continues.

An old classic pub that I have been going to for years since a young child and a pub everyone knows in the lovely sleepy village of Holywell.. It is a lovely pub to sit in, the location is really nice and I have always been fascinated with the history and the ghost, Julie. A cosy pub but unfortunately it has gone down hill alot over the years. The service is friendly enough, they are nice young people behind the bar but unfortunately most of them do not know how to work in a pub/restaurant and need alot of training still..it seems like they just hire young people and put them out without not much training. Alot of mistakes are made. It's not just the one time. We do come here alot as we love the village. The prices are insane. Just as bad if not worse than London prices. They don't have prices on the menu for beers or soft drinks and seem to make up prices atleast change them regularly. For example a Moretti and half a diet coke wil cost you over £9. I used to loved coming here for a few pints In a lovely cosy pub but unfortunately the prices are far too high now. I haven't tried the food in a long time as it is far too much. Very disappointed in this place as it is a rip off and I feel it could be such a lovely pub. I miss the old days 😔

We had a two night stay B & B and ate dinner here too. A fantastic relaxing pub, lots of history and atmosphere. Food very nice, service very good and staff very friendly. This alone would score 5 stars. The only thing letting the stay and our score down was our room, (no3) it was in need of a good makeover and clean. We approached a helpful member of staff on our last day and told him about our room, he kindly reduced the cost of our stay. We would not hesitate to eat here again and would come back and stay once the rooms have been attended too.

When finishing my 3 course meal, a young, male member of staff with braces call me a “fat arse” and mentioned how the kitchen had “ran out of food” because of my simple order. Will not be returning!

The setting is lovely, next to the river and looked beautiful with the sun shining. We opted for the beef and turkey Sunday lunch. The good arrived very quickly and tasted lovely. The veg were fresh and the beef cooked to perfection. Desserts and coffee were as described. Service was great and the staff friendly with the exception of a slightly school headmistress type lady who seemed to be in charge. She could perhaps adopt a more friendly manner which is more welcoming. The only disappointing aspect was that the door to the outside seating was constantly being left opened so it got quite drafty at times. A fellow diner kept getting up and down to shut it and his companion ended up sitting with her coat on. If you feel the cold you may wish to bring an extra layer. Would definitely visit again.

Coffee machine still not working, over a week now! We were happy to have instant but when we wanted hot milk we’re told it’s against company policy, strange it wasn’t last week. The lady who served us was very abrupt and really quite rude. It’s such a shame because in the week it’s completely different, happy friendly staff who can’t do enough for you. Come on Ferry Boat, sort it out!! Also when we arrived at 8 all doors were locked!

When tasked with presiding over the fork at River Great Ouse, none be more qualified than the Old Ferry Boat. With the literal embodiment of charm, sophistication, and warmth that only accompanies lifelong friendship, this beacon shines far brighter than the greatest of lighthouses. And of course, their seating is comprised of cozy upholstery that one does not sit upon, but is rather held in a firm yet tender embrace, as the laughter and joyful chit chat of patrons dances about. Be it just passing through, or as part of a dedicated visit to St. Ives, a trip to the Old Ferry Boat is a must.

My parents recently held their Golden Wedding celebration in the function room. The staff were very attentive throughout the whole process from booking upto and including the day itself. The food was delicious and plentiful with all guest commenting on how tasty it was. We were allowed advance access to the room to decorate it and at no point felt rushed. All this combined led to a very memorial and special day. Thank you!

We booked a table for a Saturday lunchtime And on arrival stood and waited for 10 minutes no one attempted to speak to us or seat us so we approached the bar and was greeted by a grumpy member of staff who gave us some menus told us our table number and told us to find it. On sitting our table was dirty and sticky and then when ordering we was told there was a 40 minute wait on food, fair enough it was a Saturday and busy we were happy to wait the 40 minutes even though we had booked a table, however it was over an hour before our food came the cutlery and glasses were dirty and half our food came out 10 minutes after the rest when we ordered it all together. No one came back to take our plates or ask if everything was ok but this point we were fed up and paid and left really dissappointed by this visit when we used to come all the time and was happy with the service. My meal was served cold as well.

We visited for an evening meal on Saturday last. Unfortunately when we order at 7.30 many of the items on the menu were sold out??? Surely on a Saturday night you would think they would be fully stocked????When we received the food it was just warm and was not what one of the members ordered??? It is not what we are accustomed to and do not intend returning.

This is a beautiful pub. The staff are friendly and well intentioned. However, that is as far as praise can go. I took my family out for a midweek lunch. The food delivery was slow, with a wait of nearly an hour for starters, then 40 minutes for the mains. I ordered a prawn cocktail, which was supplied with a truly miserly number of prawns given the cost, and the prawns that were supplied tasted like they had been defrosted and refrozen several times. My lamb shank was tough to the point of being hard to cut and my daughter's lasagna was burnt. My husband did enjoy the cheeseburger he ordered. This is my local and used to have such good food. It is a shame how far the catering has fallen.

Lovely location for what is a generic GK pub. The welcome and service from "the lads" was top drawer.. unlike their "superior" who felt it necessary to berate them in public (not good management , been there), hopefully she will read this and adjust her "management style" accordingly. I bet it would be a lovely summer destination pub too ..watch this space!

The pub itself is beautiful, but the food and service wasn’t up to par. Though the portion sizes were quite substantial, the food was very oily and some food tasted quite bitter. The service was painfully slow, with people just standing around chatting. I get it, I’ve worked in pubs and restaurants before, but when there’s 10 tables, with 3 staff and only 1 of them actually working, it’s quite frustrating.
