The Melbourne in North Ayrshire

it was very bad.it was not good at all and i did not enjoy it at all what so ever. zero out of ten. bleh overall. staff sucked.

We came to Melbournes for breakfast before getting the Ferry to Arran this morning. It was delicious, food came out quickly and all 8 of us enjoyed the food. Staff were friendly and even gave our dog a treat and put out water for him. Hash browns were forgotten on my order but the staff quickly fixed it. Lovely experience and good breakfast 😊

Came in for some lunch, haven’t been in for many years (well over 8 years) it’s newly decorated which looks modern and has a lot of local history within the art dotted around. You pay before your food arrives which is fine my main issue was the portion size for money as well as taste and the products used. My chips & curry had a spoon full of watery tasteless curry on it. My panini was definitely not what I was looking forward to the chicken inside was cold and the peppercorn sauce would’ve burnt the mouth of you (literally did) and my wife had the macaroni and chips she said it was absolutely tasteless no seasonings through it nothing, and again for a “main meal” which was ordered off the menu stating this it was a very small portion for the price. Nicest thing we had was the Fanta orange & vimto which is called the David Bowie drink. Overall a very disappointing visit very small portions for the price & unfortunately the food is a huge let down. I won’t be back. It’s a shame as the cafe itself is small but well decorated and has a lot of history within the town.

It’s spotless cosy and the coffee and cakes were nice. I used to go after School. I was 15 now I’m 85 was a great time for me lovely memories. .

I asked the waitress what was in the soup and she rhymed off the ingredients instantly, then came back with the recipe to confirm, she couldn't be more helpful, excellent service and the soup was delicious.

A long dog walk and usual coffee stop closed. Very busy on a Sunday but was nice day. Lots staff but we waited at sign which says wait here and nothing. Eventually I went to till and asked if we could sit. Ordered coffees and joined a table which didn't mind us sticking on end. We did have couple of dogs and I guess we picked wrong day to try as it was super busy and take away. Coffee was nice but food looked basic but guess lots of people just want basic food. Lots staff but it probably could have been less chaotic as they all looked bit harassed and bothered although the girl I ordered etc from was polite. Nothing really wrong with this place but seems too popular with regulars so I likely would not return as too noisy

Good old fashioned cafe with great menu choice. Service and food super. Allows dogs to. Great lunch and ice cream for the dog. Reasonably priced too. Definately be back. Recommend the cheeseburger.

Lovely staff, so very friendly and makes such a difference. I had a bacon roll and mug of tea. Couldn’t fault either and if I had more time I’d have loved to try the home baking. Just bought a holiday home near here so this will become a regular haunt for me.. looking forward to trying the breakfast - it looks great.

Had an hour to spare before playing golf , went to the Melbourne enjoyed our coffee with fresh milk and roll in slice with onion. Prices are reasonable and the place is spotless This must be one of the oldest Cafes in the west coast was remembering visiting this place in the 70s during my youth The owners keep the place modern and welcoming so would visit again

This cafe serves very nice food at a not overly expensive price and the decor is very good with a great history behind the cafe. However when the cafe is busy they seemed to get overwhelmed very easily and can’t cope with all the tables being full. Your order arrives bit by bit so when some in your group are finishing your meal the others are just getting served and this is at one table. Coffee and drinks don’t arrive till after everyone has finished their food. Coffee was also cold. A great wee venue if they could improve on the poor service. Staff are actually very nice and polite but slow and don’t always bring items over when asked. Requires someone to organise the staff better and it could be 5 star.

I visited Saltcoats arrivIng from Glasgow, we were looking for a coffee & cake, before a walk. As I had a dog it needed to be dog friendly, we went to the Melbourne they were due to close but welcomed us in . The cakes & fruit scones were lovely & coffee nice too. The staff were lovely, a nice touch was they gave the dog biscuits & a drink. Definitely be back.

Coffee tastes like UJT milk used. Macaroni is tasteless...cheapest they could find in wholesaler. Dont think cheese sauce has anything to do with cheese. Funny after taste with fried food. Staff are great and cafe is clean with a good vibe going on. Shame the food and coffee is not good quality.....not sure about vegan friendly either, Thai vegetable burger is only offering...

Fab morning visit to The Melbourne, I can recommend the fruit scone! The coffee was spot on and would visit again if in the area.

Great breakfast. We visited the Melbourne as a family with a young child and had the vegetarian breakfast which was delicious. It had eggs, beans, vegetarian haggis, potato scones and mushrooms. The service was great too and the place is well kept and seems to be very popular with the locals. 5 stars!!!

I popped in here today with the Toy Poodle that was the best part of my family inheritance: the service was friendly and attentive and the cafe is definitely dog friendly, which is very welcome for someone who has a Toy Poodle acting like a limpet! The options regarding food are pretty straightforward cafe fayre, but well cooked and presented and the staff are as friendly as you could wish for. The two young girls who were front of house today are a credit to the cafe and the parents who have raised them to be so courteous. When I'm back down in Saltcoats I'll definitely drop in by again.

Been out cycling from my house in West Kilbride last few weeks, and one Saturday morning I could not be bothered with preparing breakfast, so decided to cycle to Saltcoats and get some breakfast there. Decided upon the Melbourne as its something of a local institution (famous for appearing on various tv shows over the years) and I have always wanted to try it out. Little American retro style diner vibe to it, staff are inviting and their menu is pretty big, so sure to find something for your taste. Decided upon the traditional with a coffee and a glass of orange juice. Freshly prepared and really tasty. Prices I would consider just a little on the high side, but all in all a really good place for a good meal and would most certainly consider coming here again in future.

I ordered a “Mega” breakfast for takeaway. What was given was nothing short of laughable. For £10 you expect more than 1/2 a mushroom sliced and a very small amount of beans along with the standard items in a “normal” breakfast. Paying double the price for a takeaway drink and some toast is not acceptable.When phoning to ask if my order was correct the attitude towards my query was very poor and quite defensive to what was provided.I appreciate the return phone call from who I presume is the manager but I don’t accept that it is hard to know what goes into the box as it is layered.End result is a customer who won’t be back and will take their business elsewhere.

It’s okay nothing special being honest it’s been in the town years and I’ve noticed the prices have went up the food is ok the breakfast is about the best thing

Another trip to this excellent wee place. Friendly staff and good service. Suits families and lone diners alike. Try the sausage, mash and gravy!

Fish and chips in general are a fast food in trouble as the price keeps going up. £6.50 now for a fish supper !!! It is a shame as fish and chops were always Scotland's fast food and now it is slowly fading away. I don't see an answer or alternative as fish and fishing prices keep rising and perhaps fish and chips will soon fall into something different than a fast food alternative because of the price.

A trip from Glasgow down memory lane for my mum (born in Saltcoats) for her 90th birthday.Called the cafe in the morning to book a table for family for lunch. What a surprise to see that they had set up balloons and banners for us. Sooo kind. Can't rate this any higher than excellent! Made her day..she went there as a teenager!Thank you Cafe Melbourne!!Marion Milligan

the Melbourne is a nice friendly café in the heart of ardrossan the full breakfast which I had was great with a pot of tea provided with reasonable prices also the hot chocolate was first class if in ardrossan give it a try

2 pots of tea with mugs and a scone with butter and jam with a biscuit for a fiver..You cant get any better.. The staff are friendly and the place is clean and the toilets looks as they have just been updated..The cafe is getting a new makeover ,should be lovely when its finished.

The Melbourne is a little cafe in Saltcoats. A cosy little cafe with a great selection of food. Eggs, bacon and toast was delicious accompanied by a nice cup of coffee. Staff were also friendly. Would recommend this a a good place to enjoy breakfast.

Great place for a snack or a meal. Friendly atmosphere and staff. Price is good not too dear. Cheese burgers are really good

The Melbourne is an old school cafe in "downtown" Saltcoats. I have been visiting the Melbourne for more than 30 years. It has changed very little in that time (they have tried to make things a little bit fancier than the old days).

Good, fresh, tasty food all served with a smile in a traditional café setting, will be my regular stop whilst in Saltcoats.

I was meeting a friend as it was her birthday! We sat down and waited for someone to come and clean the table! Nobody came! So my friend went and asked if someone could clean the table! Eventually a guy took away the mess and what a miserable face! Never spoke and never cleaned the table!! A waitress appeared asking for our order finally!!! ( was kept waiting ages!) But we had to ask her to wash the table first!! We did enjoy our food! But have been put off with the hygiene! So won’t be returning!

Popped in for breakfast absolutely delicious freshly made great quality and served by pleasant people in a friendly atmosphere also very reasonable definitely a must go to place if you are in the area

My husband and I go here a lot for breakfast or lunch. Staff are friendly and the food is nice and reasonably priced. The Melbourne is a real part of the community with Acoustic music nights monthly and regular scooter club meets amongst other activities.

The whole family went for dinner on the (once a month) acoustic night and it was fabulous! Great to have a family friendly alternative to a pub to see live music and singing. Good food, great sundaes, Elaine the owner is so warm and welcoming. Audience participation is encouraged and a good time was had by all!

This place is like a timewarp to the 70s, and not even in a good way. Dated and disorganised.

Called in for coffee and roll and sausage. The cafe was very clean and the service was good. You order and pay at the counter and they bring order to the table. Did not have long to wait. The food was hot and properly cooked and the coffee and tea were hot. Would call again.

soggy greasy chips and a minnow covered in soggy batter.. inedible food.. at rip off prices.. AVOID if you value your intestinal health

Just visited the Melbourne for the first time for a takeaway since its new ownership.

Visited yesterday to have a good old fry-up/full breakfast and a cup/pot of tea and toast .. all very ordinary until I was charged £14 !!!! For breakfast??? No way... I left and won't be back! This is either the moist expensive breakfast in the U.K.

the café is now under new owners and its a bit of a let down from the way it was previously run. expensive for average food and the service is flaky at best. the order comes in dribs and drabs with some people with drinks and no food and other with food and no drinks, also order not complete with things missing. nice location and warm and friendly atmosphere with pleasant waitresses but they need to up their game and become more competent to charge the prices they do and keep your custom.

It was great to find that the Melborne has been taken over and has a new lease of life. A great little cafe - long may it continue !
