The Maypole Thaxted in Uttlesford

Loved this pub! From the little gnome grotto to the clean, light, beautifully decorated bar to the excellent Sunday lunch: beautifully roasted lamb - hard to find these days - and melt-in-the mouth roast potatoes, with a good choice of vegetables and plenty of gravy. I recommend the cherry pie for pudding. It was gorgeous. Very welcoming staff who made us feel at home. I'm going again soon. Just wish The Maypole was located nearer to us.

Light and airy resturant, and very attractive patio/garden area. There is parking, but the turning into the car park is tight. The staff are very helpful and pleasant The menu is varied, well cooked and the portions are generous. Next time I will have two starters (or a child's portion) ... and I am usually greedy!

We went for dinner here last week when visiting the area with friends. One of our friends lives locally and had booked the table, and told them that I had certain food allergies. I was very impressed when on arriving and being given the menu I was also given a list of dishes that could not be adapted for me. So this made choosing my food so easy and it was nice to have a range of dishes that I could eat. There were five of us in the party and we all enjoyed our meals which were freshly prepared and delicious. The staff were very friendly too. There seemed to be quite a number of local people in there too, which is always a good sign. Highly recommend.

The Maypole catered for the wedding of our friends and we loved the place. The venue itself is beautiful and the outdoor area stunning. The staff did a fantastic job of decorating the pub for the happy couple. The food we had was amazing, we went back for Sunday diner the next day. The staff were absolutely brilliant, professional, friendly and were happy to join in with the celebrations and have a laugh with their customers - must give a special mention to Harry who had us in stitches such a lovely young man! If you ever visit Thaxted a trip to the Maypole is a must !

5 hungry friends…..arrived at the Maypole on Wednesday 26 of July. Delicious food and good service despite the restaurant being very busy. A special mention for Molly who was very welcoming, efficient and charming. One of our party is very keen on Real Ale and was not disappointed by the selection on offer. This was our first visit to the Maypole but it won't be our last.

Great all round experience, friendly staff, welcoming and genuine . Really clean tidy and well designed areas , garden is lovely . Food ! Amazing and huge , the lamb pie was superb & my wife’s fisherman’s pie was equally as good , great ale’s & selections of cocktails. Enjoyed that much we returning tomorr night too .

Perfect Sunday roast beef dinner. Impeccably served, decor immaculate. Nothing too much trouble. Plenty of beautiful and interesting things to look at both in and outside. Really exactly what a proper English village pub should be all about. A credit to the owners and staff alike.

Another fabulous meal at the Maypole. Vince is an excellent host and Harry, our waiter was superb as always. I have been here many times and have never been disappointed. Well done to all the Maypole staff….keep doing what you’re doing!

I very rarely write reviews but the maypole in thaxted was a wonderful place to visit the ambience and staff were very welcoming and the food was delicious very fresh using local produce The staff were friendly and accommodating and I would highly.recommend a visit

I called to book a table on a recent Saturday morning and was told by the man that answered that we could just turn up as it was quiet. We arrived at 12.15 to find the pub empty with the exception of a few men sitting at the bar and one small group waiting for a table. No tables were taken and only 2 had a reserved sign on them. There was no sign of anybody working there and the regulars were complaining that they wanted drinks. We waited at the bar for 10 minutes before one of the other group waiting went and knocked on the kitchen door to find a member of staff, only to be told the man inside didn’t work there. Very strange. Another few minutes of waiting and finally a couple appeared from the cellar. We were still all ignored while they moved some drinks and boxes around. They seated the first group and then ignored us again. I politely asked if we could have a table for three for a light snack ( it was only me and my 2 elderly parents so not exactly a rowdy crowd) and I was told by the landlady that there was no room with no apology for keeping us waiting for so long for a wasted trip and no apology that she wouldn’t seat us. We were most disappointed and it felt like it was just an inconvenience for her to have more than one table to deal with so she’d rather turn us away.,We walked back past an hour later expecting to see the place full to the brim and the pub was still full of empty tables. I’m in the process of moving to Thaxted and this could have become a new regular local pub to me, but due to the time we wasted waiting, along with feeling of being unwelcome and an inconvenience, it has put me off returning.

We went as a group of 6. The staff were very slow to give us our menus and it wasn't very busy. The prawn cocktail starter was good but the sea food gumbo was over fried and hard as was the chicken. For main, the pie had way too much pastry encasing it which made it stodgy and some of it inedible. The chicken in the roast was dry and the yorkshire puddings burnt. We were served a whole head of broccoli which was difficult to cut in to separate florets. The place looked tacky and the atmosphere was charmless. One waiter seemed to be very efficient but our main waiter lacked warmth or charm. We heard the way he spoke to another table and it seemed borderline rude. We will not return.

Good range of drinks.Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Very pleasant place to with friends or family. Lovely little hidden gem. Highly recommend!

I reviewed this pub in August as I was so impressed…but… having come back with friends, my second visit did not live up to my first. We booked for Sunday lunch. The pub was festooned with halloween decorations which were a bit OTT that early in October and made the pub look tacky. The pub wasn’t busy and there were plenty of available tables. We were given a table by the back door, which was propped open by the waitress during our visit so cold air flooded in, and a group stood just outside smoking. Very unpleasant. The food was plentiful and nice enough, but not of the same ‘freshly cooked’ standard as our first visit. We ordered the works - starters, main, dessert, coffee, and drinks throughout the duration of our meal, and our waiter was great. A very surly waitress came over and asked us if we wanted anything else after our coffee, and we got the vibe that she wanted us to leave. So we asked her if they were waiting to close, she said no. At which point the bar man (Manager? Owner?) came over and suggested we might like to settle our lunch bill if we wanted to stay longer! So a nice relaxed Sunday lunch and catch up with friends came to an abrupt halt at that point - we paid and left. Not a great move for business as we intended to order more drinks and chat for longer. It’s now off the list for a return visit.

We went there twice. The place is really lovely with a nice atmosphere and a pretty garden. The food was very good. The service was excellent.

We got to the pub just at the cut off time for serving lunch, but the chef was still happy to allow us to order. We were not rushed in the slightest, and the food was lovely - great value, freshly cooked, piping hot and plenty of it. Lots of beers and ciders on tap. It was extremely hot today so even though there is a garden, we stayed indoors - the pub has obviously had a recent refurb, it's light, bright and inviting, with some great original art on the walls of local views. The staff were welcoming, polite and efficient. I'm so glad we popped in on the off-chance, we will definitely be going back, it's just too good not to.

We were lucky enough to have our wedding reception at the Maypole in middle of May 2022 and was truly blown away by the amazing job Vince and Leon did. Firstly, the pub is beautiful and has so much character which sums Thaxted up perfectly!...

Met family half way so picked this pub from Google. Great find. The food was excellent. We all had the chicken, leek and bacon pie. Definitely homemade, was very tasty. They realised it was my birthday and bought my dessert out with a candle and...

Booked table for 2pm. Walked in. Greeted and sat straight away. Drinks ordered and menus provided. Prompt efficient, friendly and polite service with a smile. Food was amazing and worth a little wait. Atmosphere was very pleasant and we were left to enjoy our meals...

Good food and quite good ambiance. The service varies - especially at the bar. Parking can also be difficult at busy times, but with a public car park a few minutes away.

Was spending the weekend in Thaxted, and decided t0 try The Mapypole Friday night, I had chicken and bacon pie and you could tell it was homemade with the chunks of chicken and bacon, best chicken pie Id eaten out, Hubby had the Burger again...

Came in to have a couple drinks with a friend and Jay was a wonderful bartender and we had some great conversations! :)

On 11 September we held our wedding reception in the Maypole. It was a perfect afternoon, as the sun shone on a garden full of flowers. The staff were attentive, courteous and efficient. An extensive, varied and well-cooked buffet was appreciated by everyone.

Good old fashioned Sunday Roast with homemade Apple Crumble for pudding! Lovely staff and great service. Thank you!

We was recommended this pub by a local and absolutely lovely, staff were really friendly and helpful food was scrumptious and you can see the owners take great pride in their decor, also good non alcoholic range lovely gin and tonic all alcohol free well...

We booked the May Poll for a wedding reception and we could not have had a better experience, the staff were wonderful and the landlord even offered to drive one of our guest back to their hotel to save them the experience of a cab!

What a difference!! New owners have revamped the inside and it looks great. Staff were friendly and very attentive. Food was great, tasty, home cooked, large portions- probably the best onions rings I’ve ever had! Also not rip off prices, which is so common for...

The Maypole as was ,was a bit of a dark and brown sort of pub .However Vince and Leon took it over just as the first lockdown started what timing ! However it is now light and airy what a change lots of white paint...

I cannot praise this pub highly enough. Great food, excellent service and a lovely atmosphere. So pleased with this transformation of our local pub.

At the start of lockdown I was dubious about a takeaway roast but I can't fault The Maypole in any way. Always delicious, hot and a real treat for the taste buds. If local try a takeaway, if not book a table when they reopen you won't be disappointed!

Sat outside in the winter grotto for a meal with friends. Great selection of gins and vegan meals. Huge portions. Great staff, very welcoming!

Had a great meal and drinks made the a feel very welcome and safe. Can eat inside or out as have heated area outside. Would definitely recommend. Vince and Leon have made this place a joy to visit and will definitely be going back.

Although we're not regulars, we had a few take aways during the lockdown and have called in for drinks a couple of times. Leon and Vince have transformed the place in every possible way. Looking forward to going back again.

My friend and I visited today and found the staff very welcoming, the food tasty (good vegetarian options) and reasonably priced. We didn’t sit outside but walked out the back way and saw that the garden area looked like a nice place to sit and have a drink. We plan to return.

Been there in the past but this was the first visit since the new owners took over, they’ve done a great job of transforming it into a very nice restaurant/bar. The food and choices were spot on, something for every taste. Our meal was very nice indeed, the fact that we could not finish it was no reflection on quality, just volume. Looking forward to the Sunday roast. Well done Maypole.

Love the roasts at the maypole, a good sized portion and they do takeout. Fantastic!! The Ale and ciders are pretty good too.

Nice ambiance,steak and kidney pudding home made well presented,unfortunately the pudding pastry was over cooked and rock solid and inedible,pointed this out to the waitress,no further feedback,should have sent it back.

Knew the old Maypole, didn’t like it - always felt a bit grubby. Wow it is super now, bright, fresh, and friendly. The garden is absolutely lovely, sat there for drinks before we had dinner. The ale was well kept and they had a reasonable selection of wine. The food was really tasty Can’t wait for my next visit!

The food was extremely good, everything freshly cooked and the service was great. From the quality of the pate I think it was home made. The chips were the best I have had for a long time. Obviously it takes a little longer than establishments where everything is microwaved but well worth waiting a little while and we were quickly served with drinks and looked after. No fault to find at all and the new refurbishment is smart and comfortable.

Total transformation, warm, welcoming, superb pub, popped in early Friday Evening, Rhubarb Cider was Devine, hospitality awesome, Great Garden, Doggy Friend, all in all a Real Gem & a Must Visit.

We booked last minute for Sunday lunch for 7 of us, we mentioned sitting outside as we had children with us and Vince kindly accommodated this for us. Both bar maids were efficient and helpful, the food was absolutely delicious and very generous portions. Two of our party were gluten free and they gave extra veg/roasties to make up for the bits they couldn’t have. The children sat and ate all of their roasts and are already asking when we can come back. So lovely to see the pub with a new lease of life ⭐️

We had a fabulous Sunday Lunch the first Sunday they opened. The host, Vince could not do enough to make us feel comfortable and well looked after. Food was amazing and price very reasonable.Only criticism we have is it is not local for us but we will be going back.

Met up with some friends for lunch in this lovely pub. Bright and airy surroundings whilst maintaining the old beams and fireplace. The food was absolutely perfect too and lots of it considering it was only lunch ! I had king prawn salad which was unexpectedly topped with fresh smoked salmon, the salad had just about every kind of salad vegetable you could think of which was incredibly fresh too. My friend had omelette, chips and salad, which again looked absolutely delicious and apparently also was !! . Service was quick , polite and nothing seemed too much for them , but what topped it off for me was the garden, where we sat, absolutely beautiful !.. I understand the people running it have only just taken it over and revamped it . I've got to say well done guys ! You are doing a fab job and I will definitely be returning soon . Thank you for a lovely afternoon.

Thought I'd leave a review as it's just opened with new owners. The garden is a beautiful little haven to chill in. Tried a new gin from the gin bar, wide selection! The interior was light and new, great hearing some history of the pub. Love all the plants in the garden and nooks to sit in. Plenty of parking when we arrived, quiet spot to sit in and catch up. Didn't have the food but enquired about a vegan menu and they have arrabiata pasta, vegan burger and vegan sausage & mash.Will need to return!

had lunch with friends at the refurbished Maypole today and what a great job by new landlords Vince and Leon! They've certainly worked hard over lockdown to create a crisp clean interior and a beautiful outdoor area with masses of flowers!With a good choice of wines,gins and beers, all served with a welcoming smile we decided to try their food. Chef Leon served up great cod and chips with lovely homemade tartare sauce and friends trying the burgers cleared their plates too!We'll definitely be back and look forward to sampling their Sunday roast.

Under new management and wow have they worked hard. We had lunch (it’s a 70 mile drive for us ) food was absolutely amazing. Excellent quality and well cooked. The homemade tartare sauce should be bottled and sold and my husbands burger was impressive. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxing with friendly hosts. We will definitely be coming back.

We went for lunch at this pub, taken over by new landlords at the time of lockdown. It was well worth a visit and all social distancing guidance was followed.The new decor is modern and clean with a lovely garden with plenty of outdoor seating. They've definitely got green fingers!The food was hot and tasty, I really enjoyed the freshly cooked chips and sadly had no room for pudding! The new hosts were friendly and welcoming and made us feel at ease, we look forward to our next visit!

I live in Thaxted, and this is my local. Sharon and Tim are always welcoming and do a splendid job. They offer a good selection of real ales, a pleasant and extensive garden, excellent Sunday roasts and friendly clientele. What more do you want?

My daughter has been there before and recommend it to watch the England game. All the locals greeted us well and made us feel at home at half time we were offered bacon or sausage rolls which were great, great time spent there. Back next week.

On a Sunday they only do Roast dinners and don’t even offer pork. The Pool table can only be used by those over the age of sixteen. The place needs more variety.

The maypole is a good old fashioned traditional pub Always a Warm welcome , great events like morris men the occasional quiz nights , discos and karaoke and Friday night pizzas delicious and not to forget the legendary Sunday roasts .... a great local pub worth a visit

I went for a drink in the evening with 2 friends and ordered 3 pints of beer. An hour later we were offered more drinks but we politely declined. Then the lady owner rudely told us that this was a pub, we can’t sit here for free and we should leave. The pub wasn’t overly busy and there were lots of empty tables available. In future we will visit one of the other pubs that Thaxted has to offer.

Had a fabulous Sunday at the maypole, fabulous roast and the best staff. Sold us some fresh eggs for breakfast—all double yolkers!! Be sure to give it a visit

I had a Sunday roast at the Maypole. The staff was very friendly and the pub was comfortable. The portion of Sunday roast was huge and I found out after I can order a smaller portion. The Roast chicken with gravy came with peas, carrots, cooked greens, parsnips(i think), Yorkshire pudding and a side of cauliflower cheese. Very good all around.

Visited this delightful hostelry for a pool match. Picture postcard village and the owners of this pub really have taken great care in making it a warm and welcoming place to visit. Pretty outside and equally tastefully decorated inside. Not your usual pub, the furniture is a delight, I say this because the chairs would not be out of place in your home, sturdy period pieces, it’s the little things that matter to me. The ladies that were behind the bar were lovely, prices not extortionate, locals were welcoming and we’d even got sandwiches and nibbles after ( we won ) our pool match, which was unexpected but very much appreciated. I will be back and not necessarily in a pool capacity.

We were looking for a Sunday roast on our drive home and chose the Maypole as it was on route and in a lovely lookimg village. We chose well. They have a good selection of ales, and the roast was fantastic. A proper home cooked roast. Tons of veg, beautiful meat, and potatoes you really find fine this well in pubs.The staff well really friendly, ss were the locals at the bar.

We tried one evening whilst staying in Thaxted and received a very warm welcome from them. It’s a small village pub with a well thought out courtyard behind. Unfortunately they didn’t do food in the evenings other than having some pizza Fridays events, otherwise we would have stayed there for the evening.

Only ever had drink here but menu looks good at weekends. Have been there when there's a folk band or things on and the atmosphere is friendly and great.

Friendly staff, landlady and landlord at this well run traditional pub. Different beer styles on offer to suit all preferences, including permantly serving a mild ale. A real wood burning stove and good Sunday lunches served with friendly efficient service.

Very friendly pub and went all out to make my Pimms drink. Much appreciated. Well worth a visit if you're looking for a quiet drink

We called in a couple of times for a drink, and enjoyed the beers and open fire, seated in their comfortable armchairs. A little tucked away, but worth seeking out, as the beer quality and range was the best we came across whilst staying in the village.

Called in for a pint of beer whilst in Thaxted on business. Seemed to be a lively local pub with several real ales to choose from. Called in at around 5pm and the bar was quite busy, didn't eat at the Maypole but the pint was very acceptable.

Had a great lunch at the Maypole today. We had the battered squid with sweet chilli sauce and the chicken wings for starters, both were excellent. For mains we had the beef and ale pie, chicken and ham pie and belly of pork, The pork was excellent with perfect crackling and great value, as were the pies.. The new menu adds to the already great choice of eating venues we have in Thaxted.

Went to the music and ale festival. A real traditional village pub in a lovely Essex village. Must go again and try the food when there is no festival

Excellent day watching the rugby in this charming village pub. Staff where very friendly and warming as you enter and the service was very exceptional. A great selection of beers and fine ales. And I would highly recommend a visit to this lovely place.

Encontramos con mi familia para comer el domingo y el personal era muy amable y servicial. Tenía una ale y disfruté de mi comida de los domingos. Todos tuvimos diferentes, yo tenía la opción para vegetarianos, que era muy bonita, la salsa era un poco demasiado salada. Era mi cumpleaños hijos y mi hermana le sorprendió con una tarta que el personal sacaba mientras tocas cumpleaños Stevie Wonders feliz. Luego la apagó y toda la pub cantaron feliz cumpleaños para él. Ninguno de nosotros son gente así que realmente estaba impresionado lo agradable que eran.

After doing a tour of the area ended up at The Maypole as we were told in another bar they were doing pizza on a Monday .Arrived as they had finished around 8:30 -9 .Not good enough.So we just had a drink in the garden.My wife went to the ladies room to find a fat blonde sniffing a white powder, laughing to her saying 'only cause I'm not behind the bar , been cooking pizza all night'Shocking ,totally not the sort of thing she was expecting. We did ask to see the management to complain but they were unavailable. Will not be visiting The Maypole again.

Nos alojamos por una noche en Thaxted y fuimos a Maypole para la noche. Tenían karaoke y el pub estaba lleno. Tres mujeres que sirve tiró y nunca esperó para más de 3 minutos. Así como los clientes que ofrecen entretenimiento, así que el personal....

Llegamos para el almuerzo. Se informó de que sólo estaba disponible el asado los domingos, sin menú normal. Había pavo, cordero o ternera. Tenía carne, el cual estaba bien pero no raro como solicitado. Un montón de verduras, patatas asadas y la necesitaba un martillo y cincel para romper los abre. Muy básicas de cocina y el costo básico. Espero que theyhave un menú durante la semana. Una opción sería agradable. N.B. No hay aparcamiento.

Popped in to try a couple of Pizza's on one of their Pizza Friday Nights. They don't come much better than this! Beats our local Pizza takeaways hands down! Their choice of real Ales are great too. Thanks guys... Great pub! See you again soon. Highly recommended

Having seen that they serve fresh pizzas at The Maypole on a Friday evening on a previous visit we decided to return to give them a try.We were able to book on the day, although they did say they often get busy so probably worth booking ahead. There was a good selection of pizzas at good prices and the staff were friendly and welcoming throughout. Initially we were seated by an open door which started to get a bit cold but the staff noticed this and closed it for us before serving the food which was good.The food arrived a little staggered, apparently because they only have space to cook a couple of pizzas at a time and there were three of us. Given that, the wait of a couple of minutes for the last pizza was fine. The pizzas were piping hot, of a good size and very generously topped. I had a meat feast and was impressed with the amount and quality of the toppings.About £11 per head for pizza and a soft drink.Parking either at the pub or in the nearby free car parks.I will definitely return.

This was my second visit to The Maypole with friends. Last time, we noticed that they did fresh pizzas on a Friday evening and decided to give it a go. There was a good selection of pizzas, all at a reasonable price. The staff were all really friendly and positive. The pizzas did not take long to come and were very generously sized with a good helping of toppings. Drinks were also reasonable. All in all, we had a great night and will certainly be returning again with more friends. I can highly recommend the Maypole. A very good experience of how a pub should be run. A very enjoyable evening, looking forward to going back again. There is a good sized car park at The Maypole with several free public car parks a very short walk away.

I visited on a Friday evening for drinks with friends. I was served very quickly by the friendly bar staff despite the bar being busy. The pub had a good atmosphere making it a nice place to spend a few hours chatting. I didn't eat but saw some pizzas come out and they looked and smelt good - I intend to visit again to try them!

I have eaten and socialised many times at The Maypole, taking friends of old and new. The food, (Pizza Friday and Sunday Roast) is a must. You are better to book for a Sunday, you will not be disappointed. Always had food to a high standard and the staff are very friendly and accommodating.Had pizza last Friday and WOW, popped in for a couple of drinks and ordered pizza at same time to take home, (can eat in too). Compliments to the chef. Mmmmmm!

This country pub has the aesthetics and atmosphere which is instantly inviting and welcoming to all. From the high standard of the décor and facilities on offer, the cleanliness and top quality local food and drinks on offer, it is clear to see that this pub is run with great care and attention to detail for the benefit of its customers. The Maypole has it all, a relaxed environment for an early evening pizza and pint, a comfortable restaurant area for a slap up Sunday roast and they always go the extra mile to celebrate a holiday or event and encourage everyone to get involved which means if you are not a regular already, you soon will be!

We had two bbq meat feasts and a Veggie V with requested extras. They were delicious. Great service - they were ready at the time we wanted them and service with a smile!

Wonderful beamed country pub with open fire, lovely staff and fantastic beer & wines.Visited this pub a few times now as first time I went I felt welcome and chatted with the staff and landlady as if i'd known them for years. Been back and eaten there and the food and prices were excellent. Have been with family (I have four young boys) and we were all welcomed and thoroughly spoilt over Sunday Lunch. They also have a large range of cask ales from different breweries which is rare these days as most are tied to one or two beers. It was great to have a good choice. I've been with friends for the evening and the welcome and service is just as good. even had a game of pool with the locals who were also very friendly. The Friday night pizza I had was the best pizza I've had outside of Italy. All round a great pub. Thank you to all the staff.

We absolutely love this place!! To start with the staff are always on form ... Smiley, friendly and happy to help with anything.The food is what to expect from a proper pub, big portions without comprising on quality, we'd also like to add that it has the best facilities for smokers and vapers alike, with a beautiful heated seating area that many pubs and restaurants fail to offer at all. Finally ...the maypole has a very special talent in their ability to make every event/holiday extremely special with their amazing decorations and festivities. Totally well worth a visit wether just for a swift one, a full Sunday slap up or to party the night away.

Great little pub spoilt by rude staff, had to wait 5 minutes while the member of staff was sitting at a computer or tablet thingy, when she eventually served us she made it quite clear she was not amused at our asking if anyone was serving, never again.

Never waited to be served, not a local and got served straight away. Sunday lunch is the best i've had in a long time. would recommend a visit, best price pub in the village. great atmoshere will definitley visit again.

Waited ten minutes for service, with one barmaid working. Never got served. Local walked in and got served straight away. Old drinking pub with no atmosphere will never visit again.

Although we were already a bit late for a Sunday roast lunch all the staff re-started to feed us with a very nice meal. Even a vegetarian Sunday roast version was offered, which was just excellent. The staff even delayed their anyway late lunch for an hour in order to be there to service us. The coffee and the desserts were excellent as well. We'll come back, indeed ...

The best vegetarian Sunday roast we have ever had with plenty of accompaniments, great portions, very well-cooked. Very attentive staff.

Love The Maypole. Had sunday roast there yesterday with the fam. Friendly staff and great food as always. Very popular was pretty much fully booked as far as I could tell. The new owners and staff have done wonders with the place.
