The Market Inn Hotel in Dumfries & Galloway

Visited for a family party that was being held in the hotel. We were made to feel so welcome. Staff are lovely and can't do enough for you. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. Rooms were comfortable and immaculately clean. The function room was beautifully decorated and we had a brilliant time. I slept like a log and the breakfast was amazing! Highly recommended this lovely, friendly family run hotel. Can't wait to visit again!

Went for the husbands 60th Birthday dinner. Great meal reasonable prices. But most of all the fantastic staff who went above and beyond to serve us. One of the staff even gave a lift to the lesser able bodied of our group. Also dog friendly. Thank you so much

This was recommended to us for an evening meal and it didn’t disappoint. Booking is advised at a weekend and we can understand why. The inn has a lovely cosy friendly atmosphere and we were warmly welcomed on arrival and shown to our table which was adjourned with Christmas crackers and places set. The staff were lovely our orders quickly taken. A nice bit of friendly banter from Janet ( hope I got the name correct) just added to the enjoyment of our evening. The food was splendid, quickly served and nice and hot. I can only say, if you are visiting or staying in Castle Douglas then this is a little gem of a place to enjoy quality food and drinks served in a lovely pleasant atmosphere. We will definitely visit next time we are in town.

We spent 3 nights in this comfortable, friendly hotel and enjoyed every minute. The staff and owners chatted and made us and our dog feel very welcome. We had dinner on the first evening and the food was really good. Breakfast was always served with a smile by Sarah. Definitely going to return here soon.

A pleasant result. A last minute choice owing to our first choice (The Kenbridge Hotel.) seemingly having gone off line. We don’t know the area well and we’re very much guided by reviews. They surpassed themselves in the warm welcome on arrival by family members working hard to make sure we were at ease. The room had clearly been upgraded, excellent en suite and comfortable bed. Heating was a little low but they did their best to address that. Through no fault of theirs we arrived at about 6pm to discover that they were pressed for dinner service that night and we’d have to eat more or less right away. We opted to eat out locally but the breakfast was plentiful and substantial. Toast was underdone but that apart, attentive service and good value for money.

My husband & I were staying in Castle Douglas for a family wedding. Came across the Market Inn & popped in to see if there was a table available. It was extremely busy but the staff went out of their and managed to find us a table. Enjoyed a delicious meal (great quality, large portions & very reasonably price). The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive. We were so impressed we returned again and received the same great quality & service. A gem of a find. Would highly recommend if visiting/staying in Castle Douglas.

We were recommended this hotel for lunch by the lady in tourist information. Very friendly and helpful staff and comfortable surroundings. There was plenty to choose from on the menu and the food was excellent.

We stopped off at the Market Inn for something to eat whilst on a motorbike tour of Scotland. On the evening we visited there were a couple of young girls serving who were an asset to the establishment very friendly and knowledgeable. The food was outstanding and the decor was lovely. Would highly recommend.

It’s a lovely wee hotel with great food great beer and friendly staff. It’s definitely well worth dropping into the Inn. Will definitely return here on my next visit to the town.

Had lunch here today. Food was delicious for all. Gluten free menu was good,and the salt and pepper chicken was recommended from it. Big portion sizes, well presented and piping hot. Staff very welcoming. First time here for myself but will definitely be back.

i took my mothr here few weeks ago for sunday lunch due to her mobility we were struggling a little but the owner was very kind to help us the dining area is very clean and wel set out staff were excellent the menu was reallyy good and food was extreamly delicious couldnt ask for more easier to access than many others we would definatly return here

A comfortable place for a stop over, made enjoyable by very friendly staff. Do not be put off by the exterior appearance as inside has been updated. Our room was quiet, bed comfortable, decent shower (but no shampoo provided, only shower gel) and lovely breakfast. £95 per room B&B perhaps a bit over expensive.

Staff were extremely accommodating when we arrived without a reservation at a busy lunchtime with a party of four plus a dog. They went out of their way to find us a table. Menu is extensive with a good choice of traditional pub food. Good value.

Couldn't have gone to a worst place, the staff are very respectful and the foot was horrible. Overall the place needs closed down.

We enjoyed a lovely lunch at a quick stop before heading for the boat back to Northern Ireland. The first thing we noticed was how friendly the staff were. They made conversation and put us at ease as we had our 5 month old baby with us. The lunch was well priced and really tasty and the service was efficient but personal. The coke was lovely and fizzy (which you don’t always get) and it was only we were in a rush or we would of stayed for dessert. Great place with excellent staff!

Date night took on a special significance with a dinner trip here. Was staying in the hotel so was easier to stay in, and wow, we we delighted with the atmosphere, choice and standard of food. Usually eat in city centre but this was just as, if not better,than many we have been recently. Definitely try the mint aero sundae! Worth the travel to just have another!

The food and service here are both good. The dining room can sometimes be cold, as the door into the corridor is often left open to help the staff bring though the food. It's just not my favourite for pub food in the town.

Called in without booking looking for an evening meal, nice friendly atmosphere, good choice on the menu, service was prompt and was well looked after. Food was tasty and served nice and hot. Went back a second time, just as good.

We had evening meal and a few drinks here and were given a very warm welcome, good choice of meals and drinks on offer.

We visited as a party of 6 friends needing a good catch up. We checked trip advisor for where to eat, and decided on The Market Inn. Although their restaurant was undergoing a refurb we were able to dine in a really nice room, which we thought was really quirky. It had a nice atmosphere. The service was amazing, the girl looking after us was so nice. We had great drinks pre meal with some really nice gins in the proper glasses and prosecco served right. The meal was outstanding, most of us had the sweet and sour chicken Which was amazing, and my other two friends had macaroni and a burger, they both said it was delicious. The total bill was less than we expected too. We will definitely be back. Loved everything about it. I'm the only one of my friends group still living locally and I'm glad I picked here for our meet up.

Visited one evening with our young children. Great kids menu and very reasonably priced. We enjoyed our meal too. There was work Getting done and could smell paint but it didn't bother us.

Went today Wednesday 10th April for lunch wish I hadn't. Renovations getting done so put in a small side room. I ordered the soup which was lentil I can tell you it was not freshly cooked today also roll was microwaved warmed so lazy. Wife had chicken stir fry half and half but it wasn't half half full portion of rice and 8 chips . The worst meal was my dads the macaroni cheese and chips it was the worst ever . To much cheese not enough sauce bloody disgusting. The chips are not the best frozen chips never are thou. Drinks ridiculous expensive £2.70 for lime and soda with very little lime in it. Castle Douglas says it's the food town yet all I see is mostly over expensive places to eat that are not good at all.

Ate here with friends on a Wednesday evening. Staff were attentive and helpful even though at 8pm we were the only diners. Portions were large and reasonably priced. The inclusion of potato cake, mashed potato and chips with the Caledonian chicken did seem a little over the top and personally I would have liked more haggis and less chicken. We were full haven eaten only one course. Others had the steak pie, burger and lamb shank - all cooked well.

Good was quite alright, but nothing special. Having to debone the battered haddock makes it difficult to eat, but the frying was well done. Lasagna barely contained any pasta and was more of a meat pie. No selection of ciders.

Nice cosy wee place with friendly staff. We had fish and chips and the Chicken Balmoral which were both delicious. The whisky and marmalade sauce with the chicken is amazing! Good size portions too. We will definitely be back!

Have just returned from having a Christmas meal with friends from work this is the first time here and I can honestly say it won't be my last the food was really tasty the service was excellent the atmosphere was warm and cosy a real Christmas treat.

Called into Market Inn on our way home. Had a two course meal. It was very good. Service was excellent. Staff friendly.

There were eleven main course dishes, five of which were chicken based with only one fish. The portions were huge and one could have easily been shared between us and we would not have gone hungry. Very off putting to be presented with such a mountain of stodge. Service was quick by two obviously overworked staff coping with the bar work as well as taking orders, serving and clearing up. The bar atmosphere was not particularly conducive to a relaxed dinner.

Stopped here for lunch when on the way to Newton Stewart. It has a limited menu but the young lady that served us was very pleasant and the meals came quickly. My wife ordered the haddock and it was very good and a large portion. I had the chicken in some a whisky sauce which turned out to be tasty but the chicken was bland. Two main meals and two wines cost around £30 so not the cheapest meal but would probably go again.

We have had a a lot of meals for a variety if occasions, birthdays, anniversaries or just the off night out, great services, lovely hotel and delicious food...never had a bad meal and value for what they charge... always look forward to going back xx

On choosing an Indian dish from the specials board, it was very watery and not much chicken, but my friends was exactly the same dish and completely opposite to mine.

Had a lovely sweet and sour chicken Gluten free and what a plate full staff told me hardly anybody clears their plate but I did it was so tasty. Said they would even nip to tesco's for the flour if theye were out of G F flour where else would you get that treatment. Will be back without a doubt.

The portions are very generous and well cooked and presented. Would definitely recommend the beef pie and Balmoral chicken. Very friendly bar and waiting staff.

Doesn't look much from outside but nice decor on inside. Friendly staff and great food - kids meals good quality for the price. Can recommend the Chicken Balmoral with the whiskey and marmalade sauce. Didn't have dessert as too stuffed but would definitely recommend.

Can't for the life of me understand why the restaurant in the Market Inn is not rated the No 1 restaurant in Castle Douglas. Dined in the main restaurant two days ago (party of 4) and my friends and I were all equally impressed with the food, service and professional attitude of the staff. Two steaks, chicken curry and steak and ale pie were of top quality and extremely generous portions.I note that the Luing and Belted Galloway Societies (Scottish Beef Cattle) are to hold their annual dinners in the Market Inn, in the very near future. If these Societies choose to dine in the Market Inn, it only goes to show the quality of food provided by this hotel. Make sure you book a table to avoid disappointment if you wish to dine here.

It was only because another pub/hotel was closed, that we ended up giving this place a try and I'm so pleased it was closed. The Market Inn Hotel does not look very appealing from the outside, but it really steps up to the mark when you step in. Greeted by very friendly member of staff, who made sure we were comfortable and my dad who is disabled had room to put his wheelchair. I ordered the steak pie and dad had the lasagne, both of which were fabulous. My steak was lean and so tender it just melted in my mouth, and the lasagne was very meaty and cheesy (dads words). Can't wait for our next visit to Castle Douglas now.

Helpful Staff, excellent service. Meal for 100 people served professionally, and in good time. Big portions - you will not leave hungry. We had pre-ordered roast beef, being a Beef Cattle Society, and it was a good main course. The dining room has a happy feeling for a big dinner.

Tried to book for Saturday night but the restaurant was full. This is usually a good sign so we tried to book for the Sunday. Had to take the 6pm slot as that was all that was left. So glad we did. Great meal, big portions, freshly prepared, restaurant filled with locals. I couldn't finish my burger which came with a slice of haggis and a portion of onion rings as well as a portion of salad and coleslaw and the chips. Hubs had the fish and chips with side salad. After a break we had an amazing dessert ice cream layered with toffee sauce and shortbread which had been crumbled. Super finish. Glad we gave the starter a miss.

Good food. Very friendly service. I have never had such a good Irish Coffee in Scotland as I had here in the Market Inn Hotel.

There weren't many options and this restaurant was very quiet but turned out to be very good. Our steaks were delicious and the kids played billiards and we watched the football. The staff were lovely and I would recommend a visit. The Burns Tower was a big hit.

Stopped in CD last night on the way home, firstly for fuel, then had tea at the Market Inn Hotel. The food was excellent and of enormous quantity! Nicely serviced by a pleasant young woman in a pub- type room which was quite quiet on a Monday night.

Its always good to go back to a place and the food is as good as it was the 1st time. The chicken balmoral,and the steak pie,both classic meals and full of taste. 3 veg,and chips,sorry no space for a dessert,but great choices of beers etc. Always very welcoming,and friendly.

We visited here for an early evening dinner. Luckily the lovely staff managed to fit us in despite having not booked before arrival. The staff were so welcoming & friendly. Nothing was a problem. Food was served piping hot, good portions & very tasty. We'll certainly be back.

We were recommended this restaurant by the Douglas House down the street. We arrived and were warmly received. The service was great and the food was good. We would definitely return when in the area again.

We have been to the Market Inn Castle Douglas for a evening meal with friends ,what a great meal we all had super choice of starters,main courses,very large helpings ,fantastic service,great selection of sweet courses, we were all stuffed.

As a vegan I gave notice to hotel of my diet requirements and was pleasantly surprised to be offered choice of 3 different mains. I chose the stuffed peppers which were delicious.. however there was no starter suitable for vegans and for dessert I was offered a fruit salad which I thought was very boring. Imagine my disappointment when it arrived and it was TINNED FRUIT SALAD!! I would rather have been told they didn't have anything suitable than be offered this abismal choice! However, my daughter ate it on my behalf in order not to waste it.The surroundings and friendly staff compensated and we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and I would visit again but would hope for a better choice of a 3 course meal

Stumbled across this place whilst on a break in the area and had the dog with us so a dog friendly restaurant was a must!We visited on a Monday night and were the only diners but this was ok! We had a black pudding and haggis starter which was absolutely delicious. For main, my steak pie was fantastic, huge portion and lots of steak filling, perfectly cooked. My husbands burger however, was totally pink in the middle so was inedible. We reported to the waitress who apologised and refunded the cost of the starter, which was fair. All in all recommended, but ensure you ask for your burger to be cooked through! The restaurant itself is modern and pleasant. The girl on duty was friendly.

Following a weekend in castle Douglas with extended family we had a meal here once and drinks on a different occasion. Loved the decor, possibly the most attractive hotel , bar and restaurant in the town. Food was lovely and all enjoyed our meal .

This is a spotlessly clean hotel with lovely staff and doggy friendly. BUT waited we 55 minutes to be served and apart from a super haggis starter (which wasn't charged for because of the delay) the curry was !!!!!!! and the mixed grill was grim. Rubber egg, meat which the dog refused and cremated gammon. Overall it was very poor.We felt sorry for the lady in charge as she was so apologetic and pleasant but we would never return.But this was typical of our experience in Galloway - lovely people but wake up to tourism.

Once again trip advisor doesn't fail. We had a choice between here and one other place but glad we went here. Restaurant was well appointed and you didn't really feel you were in a pub. How would I like my burger cooked - that's a good question and a good sign of decent chef. Yes, it was cooked rare to medium just like a steak would be. The specials were lovely but sticking to the main menu was choice enough for decent pub grub but it had twists on the usual fare as well as the standards such as lasagne, etc. I am sure these were also very good and the portion size also. Try the ice cream ( think it was a rob Roy ) best and richest vanilla ice cream with toffee sauce and crumbed shortbread. It doesn't sound like much but oh boy! Wait till you get started on it!! Just go here with an appetite folks. Well done Market Inn staff for your 'no problem' attitude and the 'Dijon mustard'. Service exemplary. Seriously, thank you.

We were not lucky to stay here, but we did have an excellent meal on Thursday July 23rd.The lady running the bar was very attentive, and her young niece was a credit to her.The whole experience left us with a smile of pleasure.

We just chose this Hotel at random as it provided an early dinner. The staff were very attentive and courteous and provided good service. We ate in the bar although I understand other areas including Al Fresco were available. The menu was fairly standard and the cooking good. There was a warm and friendly atmosphere and everywhere was clean and well maintained but not memorable. It was obviously a choice for locals and visiting business people who seemed very much at home. Worth a visit.

Was second choice, but was top choice afterwards!! Great menu selection, very friendly staff, food that came was huge portions, fresh and very very tasty. There was not anything left but clean plates. We had appetizers, prawn cocktail, the breaded brie and the chicken coujons could have been a meal in themselves, delicious. We had 3 of the Balmoral Chicken and 1 Lasagne, all were prepared extremely well, fantastic flavours and huge portions. We finished the meal with one liquer coffee and 1 Rhuboffee and excellent were the compliments. Overall a fantastic place, fantastic staff, and will definitely be taking more folks back there to eat. You will not be disappointed!!!

The restaurant is nicely furnished and the food was freshly prepared, with a good choice on the menu. The staff were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble.

Had a lovely meal at the Market Inn, restaurant was well decorated with relaxing soft background music playing. Meal was piping hot, tasty and good value for money. No problem providing meal for granddaughter who is gluten & dairy intolerant and low sugar diet. Was no problem making a fruit salad, especially when not on menu.

Definitely one for the younger age group (Under 40's). The décor in the lounge bar is very relaxing although the bar is only small & when I was there, the pub had a private function going on in the back but people were coming to the lounge bar to get served.

The fish was enormous, very moist and tasty. Too many chips for me - I would ask for a smaller portion another time. The Merlot was very good - beware it is 13%!

Like the rest of the reviews, this is a cracking wee place to try, its value for money food, good pub grub, made with great quality products. There's a great menu choice, there is a specials board, special more limited on Fridays as it will change for the week ahead etc, snack menu to great choice starter/mains/sweets. The steak pie is great value, jam packed with tender steak, the chicken balmoral is so tasty would highly recommend both dish's, and the sweets are different too, give this place a try you will not be disappointed. Service was great not a problem the day we visited

Having visited here for the annual Luing dinner it was lovely, everybody was very good at their jobs and the dinner delivered very promptly a great night had by all.

Our third visit and as the previous visits the food was excellent. This visit everything was close to perfect, the quality of the fried items was brilliant. Not greasy, cooked just right.The food was hot and as we were early the food arrived very quickly.Service is welcoming and did make you feel wanted.Go here and you will visit again. Satisfaction guaranteed except for picky people who tend to like nothing anywhere as some review of restaurants in Trip Advisor indicate. Stop being picky and order what you will eat and enjoy it.
