Thank you to the lovely attentive staff who catered for our baby shower on Saturday. The afternoon tea was first class. The cakes & scones were delicious. The staff couldn't do enough for us. We were in the conservatory which was bright and private. Wouldn't hesitate to book it again. Thank you to all that were serving us.

Food was really good. However the service was very, very poor. Young waitress seemed very out of her depth and seemed to be receiving next to no support. We were asked for our main course choice 3 times. Another couple left after 35 minutes as no one went near them to take drinks order etc. Staff seemed very unaware of what was going on around them . This experience has put us off going back .

Visited Sept 2024 with family. Staff were amazing with customer service & it was quite busy. Food was OK but the lasagne & cheesecake had the texture of being shop bought. Googled the Eton Mess cheesecake (which they charge £7 for) & found it on the Brakes website. Which is fair enough but I've been to restaurants it's home made for around the same price. I know they're under new management so maybe trying to find their way but I'd maybe go back once things are being made in house?

Thought we’d give it a try as it’s opened (again). Food wasn’t very inspiring - I had scampi which was hard, and chips which had a lot of black bits in them. We thought we would have a coffee afterwards but they had run out of milk - this was 6.30pm on a Thursday evening - there’s an Asda practically round the corner!! Then on looking at the new trouser had on there must have been something messy on the chair as they were marked at the top of the leg - I hadn’t worn them anywhere else. Very annoying and they obviously don’t clean things down very well. I won’t be going back. It’s a real shame because years back it was okay - I can’t understand why no one can make this place a success again.

Left the premises with prawn cocktail all over my top and trousers when the plate was taken away from the table when the cutlery was dropped and then to add insult to injury had to ask for a cloth which i beleive the manager said she would go and get.. fish was over cooked and also ended up slicing into and almost eating a napkin which is hidden under the container for the chip holder.. . Chips were over cooked and hard!! And the gammon was poorly cooked aswell.... there was the standard removal of drinks and one meal removed off the bill but it was an expensive night for such poor service and food.... management didn't seem to be bothered at all by the poor poor service provided

Unfortunately alot of these reviews below are based on previous ownerships. The last two ownerships I'd agree with low ratings as restaurants service, quality wasn't great. We decided to give Mains a try under the new ownership, and all of us thought the same. The food was exactly as we'd hoped the Mains would produce. It's a few steps above 'standard' pub food. Starters were great. Cauliflower wings, squid and chicken wings we had were soo good. The main buffalo chicken burger was also beyond expectations. If this is the quality going forward and other reviews were teething problems then I can't wait to go back and wouldn't hesitate in recommending the food. We've lived in bridge of don so long and been wanting this from the mains for a long time. Previous owners had food delays all the time. Whereas when we went things arrived in really good time and cooked very well. In addition the service was great. The staff were attentive and always ready to offer additional drinks or to ask if anything else needed. Hopefully this is how it continues, as like I've said we've all wanted this from here for so long with it being very local.

We popped in for fish and chips on a Tuesday night. We wanted to give this place another shot as we are locals and love that it’s been opened again! We were not disappointed! The welcome we got was lovely, happy to see us even though we hadn’t booked. The menu is very good, proper pub grub at a reasonable price. We ordered and went back to look over the menu, basically as we wanted to make sure we knew what we would have if we returned 🤣 Well there is so many good dishes on it, they even have 2 for £20 on lunch dishes, curry night, fish Friday etc! Our food came and we tucked in to an absolutely delicious meal! My daughter inhaled hers, she ordered a side of onion rings which I ate too they were spot on!! What a delight. We’ll definitely be back soon. Can highly recommend it and the service was excellent with a smile and I was happy to see a few people walking in also. I really hope it takes off again ideal for walking to with chums for a drink and some delicious food. Well done guys!

This was our first time back to the restaurant under the new owners, but have visited the bar a few times since it's reopened. Heartened to see it's been busy each time we have. visited. We have been customers of The Mains for several years, living in BoD for 35 years in December. A lovely warm welcome by one waitress who was very friendly and understood my dilemma with the choice in the new menu. We both decided on the haggis and black pudding bonbons, a personal favourite, and thoroughly enjoyed. My Husband had the chicken strips. The accompanying sauce and coleslaw were outstanding, as I had to have a taste. I went for the spiced ginger and soy steak. Wow! The burst of flavours in this dish is amazing. I was left with a tingling in my mouth, but it was not overly spicy either. Just perfect. We spoke to the owner and commended him on how great a job he and his Wife and Team were doing so far. Keep this going and you will really see what a gem of a community pub you have inherited. Thoroughly recommend!

Welcoming staff, good choice of food at reasonable prices. Good atmosphere, a number of tables were occupied. We enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back for more. Wishing the new management every success. Back again for dinner and really enjoyed it. Warmly recommend the Steak Frites which came well presented and cooked to your preference.

Agree with the other previewers on here that the experience at Mains of Scotstown was appalling and we had almost exactly the same issues. Waited an hour for our mains (after arriving at 6:30pm on Tuesday 6th August), despite having pre booked, and other walk-in customers had been served before us. When the food finally arrived (at different times) we discovered that one of our mains had not been ordered with the kitchen by the waitress, so one of us had to wait while the kitchen hastily cooked another. When that arrived 15-20 minutes later it was not cooked properly and was sent back. The staff did offer a replacement or anything else from the menu but it was declined, given that the other mains we had were either overcooked or just didn’t taste very nice, i.e. the chicken strips were so tough they could not be cut with a knife and the gammon was not edible. When we complained to the front of house waitress we were given an apology and the missed order mains was taken from the bill together with the alcoholic drink for this mains and offered a measly 10% discount off the rest of the bill after she had “spoken to her manager”. We reluctantly paid as we were so fed up by this time but will make sure we never go there again and tell all our friends in the Bridge of Don neighbourhood about our experience (and give a poor review online). It’s the worst eating experience we’ve ever had so please do not go here to eat! I doubt things will get any better.

I really wish that I could say that this was a lovely evening meal with great friends. I certainly can say the ‘great friends part’ but the rest was an ongoing disaster. I booked online and on arrival to a busy sounding and looking restaurant I thought how good that was to see and hoped the new owners were going to make a go of it. Having lived in the Bridge of Don for 30+ years I really wanted to support my ‘local’ and hoped to be a part of getting the Mains ‘back on the map’. I had heard good reviews from locals who had tried it since it had reopened and that the new owners were trying to make a go of it. Throughout the whole evening the young really inexperienced staff tried valiantly to carry on and get meals out to the tables. We were told that the food was going to be over an hour with lots of shouting coming from the kitchen, which could be heard in the restaurant which did not inspire. We decided again to stay and give them a go on hearing about the delay (as did debate going elsewhere) as we hoped they could redeem themselves.. But things got worse……tried to order and this was equally difficult. The young waitress (Mel) was lovely and tried so hard to keep going in very difficult circumstances which needs to be commended and once trained will be an asset to any eating place. She was friendly snd tried so hard. The owner (I believe she was) had the worst attitude I have ever come across in a restaurant ever. Lots of things happened throughout the evening and her attitude is going to make sure that this place won’t ever be the vibrant and happy meeting place that it once was. Overall the young, inexperienced staff tried so hard with little or no back up from the owner and I have to say thank you to them for trying to rescue the toxic atmosphere / attitude problem from the owner. Sorry I wanted to write a brilliant review and say the Mains is back on the map but so far my experience can’t support that. We didn’t have to pay for our meal which was something as so many things went wrong with our food and service (we had been debating what we were going to do if the full bill came out) but at least they recognised that error. We did leave a tip which I was assured would go to the staff not the owner which we gave willingly for trying so hard under very difficult circumstances. I have actually never written a review like this so I hope you can rescue the ‘sinking ship’ and put the disastrous Friday evening (2nd August) behind you and step forward to brighter and better days.

The mains of gammon chop and steak frites - simply amazing. Cooked exactly to my taste and not to mention the peppercorn sauce, it was almost creamy in texture. There was not a drop left. The mac and cheese was so creamy as a nice side. The desserts... simply to die for and topped off a beautiful meal. Last but not least, the service from Mel was outstanding. 10 out of 10. First went to Meraki. Couldn’t believe they you could only order 2 or 3 courses. We asked to order one but were told we couldn’t. Crazy as there were only two other tables occupied. Drank our drinks then went through to the main bar. Ordered macaroni asked for chips instead of the focaccia. The macaroni wasn’t cheesy at all just creamy which was a shame. I had to order chips as a side instead. My partner had scampi. It was dry and a funny shape. Sadly, won’t be back for food.

Had the place been busy it might of made this more understandable however there was only 2 other tables in…. Whom also waited the same length of time. We were so so so disappointed with the food it was all absolutely inedible the nachos were microwaved and the chicken was so hard it was inedible. The waffles for the chicken burger were burnt and the chicken was also inedible The fillet steak was dry and very chook. We were told when we went in there was one fish left then told it was a small portion did we want to add goujons free of charge to bulk it up which was fair enough but it was all cooked for far too long and some of the chips were still frozen. The macaroni was dry and had no taste or any cheese it was supposed to come with garlic bread but it came with toast. I have never sent food back in my life but today it was a whole table of meals. Very very very disappointing.

Obviously people need to learn but how about having one experienced person on at least to train them and perhaps charge a bit less while people are learning. Limited choice of beer as well I'm afraid. On arrival the car park was not cleared of snow and no clear path into the building and being in my 70s with trouble walking this was not safe for me or anyone. We were seated and then told not enough menus, surprising when only 8 customers in whole restaurant at that point. We asked about the Christmas menu which was advertised but we’re told it wasn’t available- the week before Christmas!! 3 of the party wanted balmoral chicken. But was only 2 available. We had to wait 40 minutes for meal. We were offered a free round of drinks, however I was driving and asked for a coffee . The coffee machine was not working. We tried to order sweets to be told the kitchen had already shut and nobody gave us prior notice of this. Very disappointing experience.

We were a group of 40 who had booked well n advance for Christmas Lunch. We had to wait outside in snow to get in then another hour before we were told that the chef did not know about our order and the soup was not available. We were given a choice of soup, which came cold after another 20 mins, prawn cocktail which was swimming in water and pate which was almost ok. We were all so cold we had to keep our coats on. Almost 40 minutes later, our main course arrived. It might have been hot but the plates were freezing. Even then the waitress still had her coat and scarf on at this point. Dessert was eventually served. We were then told that we had to go up to the bar to collect our tea and coffee. Many of us had given up and gone home at that point. It was 4:15 when we finally left, not because we sat around chatting but because that was h o w long it took. This was booked six weeks in advance so there was no excuse, not that any was offered or apologies made

I'm not one for airing issues in public but I don't wish anyone to experience what I and others have/are. The Mains have lost 15 members of staff in only 11 weeks and are again recruiting for more staff and are pushing to employ under 18s specifically due to the lower wage bill that would follow. Unfortunately many staff have left due to continuously not being paid at all, correctly, on time and are having to beg for their rightful pay. The owners are treating their staff appallingly in the way they are speaking/threatening them and some have even had threats to their home and new workplaces. They are not following the law and are not allowing staff contracts either which leads them to refuse holidays they've accrued and there's alot more to the story.

Bit concerned by this point with less than a week to go but on third visit dealt with Michael who knew most of the details and was very adamant everything would be alright on the night… And it was! There were 40 of us, conservatory had been set-up perfectly and the balloons and banners I brought to put up were put up by Michael. We had use of restaurant bar and no waiting to be served at all. Buffet was out as asked for and was ace and loads of it. We were able to spill into he restaurant later and then once that bar shut at 1140 we were able to carry party on in public bar which was great fun too! Hadn't been here for several years, will be many more before I return. For a warm Friday evening in July, it was not very busy, it soon became evident why. Warning bells should have rung when I noticed during our time there (approx 3 hours) my companion was the only female visitor to the pub. The pool table was the hub for the male drinkers, it was impossible to enjoy a few quiet drinks and ignore the noise, shouting and general mayhem coming from there. Seems to be a pub interested in locals/regulars only. No wonder it wasn't busy. In addition, charmingly, someone had thrown up in the mens urinals. If this pub wants to be serious about attracting more customers and appealing to a wider customer base then the pool table should be the first casualty.

Such a pity the restaurant is not busier. Only two tables occupied on a Tuesday night but can’t fault the friendly staff member who made us feel welcome. The menu is varied and the food is really nice. A busier atmosphere would make it better. Hope locals start supporting it.

Such a lovely restaurant but shame it’s not busy. We went on a Tuesday night and only two tables occupied. Staff member so friendly and welcoming. Menu great and food was delicious. Large portions. Slight issue with a curry being too hot, but this wasn’t an issue and they served something else instead.

Went for lunch with kids. Very good covid procedures in place, cleaning very good, staff wearing masks, tables spaced well, plastic cups. Food was delicious, hot and plentiful! Place had a good atmosphere. No kids menu. Fantastic place.

Nice pub. Kept clean and has table service. Dogs welcomed inside. Big screens for the sports fans. Changed from the last time, many years ago, where you couldn't get to the bar for people sitting in their reserved chairs. They have, thankfully, gone. We will be back again soon.

Was so looking forward to our Hogmanay meal with family who we haven’t seen for so long due to Covid restrictions. They’d travelled up from Lincolnshire and we’d booked a table for 8 of us on Hogmanay at 5.30pm. On arrival the restaurant seemed welcoming...

This place is an absolute shambles. Just back from a meal with my family. After my waiting over an hour and a half for our mains and asking for updates, we decided to leave. Given our mains ‘to go’ which missed most items. Chicken skewers,...

Food took forty, maybe even fifty, minutes to come to the table. Pizza was raw. Burger was from Asda and had one bit of lettuce as the ‘salad’. Didn’t get my second drink. No table numbers, so the waiters didn’t know where they were going - the table next to us got three meals which weren’t even for them. No salt, pepper, ketchup or anything like that. Floor was sticky (glad I wasn’t wearing my new shoes..). Took about five minutes to get the bill. Didn’t get a thanks or receipt.

A lovely family restaurant with a nice bar attached. Food was hot, plentiful and delicious. Fish was fresh and well cooked but burger was definitely standard defrosted catering stuff, although cooked well. Service was friendly and attentive.

ive had a lot of bad experiences past few years with people I thought were close to me and with all the bad you see on the news and media, I was starting to think there were no good people around any more...... but after a horrible bike accident many miles from home that led to me being discharged from a hospital in a blunt and in humane way without any belongings as they were with my bike which was towed else where I was really stuck. I had to leave at midnight ish In only a hospital gown and a pair of dead guys shoes, as they cut my clothes off at the scene, and as well as that I had a very bashed up leg that I could barely walk on. now I wasn't surprised as most people I've met up til now would rather shrug it off and get you out the door or just leave you too it, rather than help you. I had little money but enough to get me a taxi to nearest hotel I could find within my budget and once I got there this is when my outlook on humanity change. not only did they give me a room I could manage to afford but due to my circumstances they through in breakfast and after hearing my troubled conversation to insurance company and breakdown company about my getting home and looking like a half naked homeless guy, they offered to get me some clothes from a local primark as I couldn't walk far, and said I could stay there as long as I needed til I could find a way of getting 500 miles south back home. there was nothing in it for them but yet they took the time to help me regardless! I would highly recommend this place to any decent folk out there looking to be catered for by lovely kind hearted people!
