Best chicken jalfrezi. Absolutely top marks and the naan bread is sitting up top as well. Well done guys, looking forward to restaurant opening again one day.

Wanting to treat the kids, we ordered a family takeaway from the Maharajah in Purton, since its always been good before. Good repeat takeaway (various chicken & lamb dishes, sag aloo, rice and poppadums) from the best Indian restaurant around - but standards are slipping. The quality of the food wasn't up to their usual high standards, but is was OK. Delivered on-time. Hopefully, this is only a one-off.

Quality of food and service has gone down. Last 3 take away a have been progressively worse. Food not up to same quality and items missing from order. Tonight’s was the last straw, a tepid collection minimal apology for missing Bhajis. Only offered apology and 15% discount when prompted . Bhajis were delivered quickly but were also tepid, not crispy and very stodgy. We threw them away. I always chose collection and I expect it to be still be hot when I get home 5mins later. Not tepid with a skin forming. But I won’t be returning. I understand that there are staff shortages and pressures in Covid. But other takeaways are managing to maintain standards.

We had some lovely takeaways from there in early 2020, however recently unfortunately the quality and taste of the food has not been very good and the food arrived cold with both deliveries. Won’t be ordering again.

I've been having takeaways from here every weekend for the last 13 years. The food is great and always tasty and hot. Khalique and the team are very friendly and have truly become friends over the years. It's a pleasure doing business with them and I can highly recommend this restaurant. Thank you for staying open throughout this pandemic Khalique.

Ate here loads before lockdown. Had a couple of deliveries too and they were fine. This time our delivery was 25 mins late. The food was stone cold. Two reheats later for my family to make the food edible. Our bill was £57. When we complained we were offered 10% off our next order. The delivery cost was 10% of our bill. The restaurant wouldn’t budge. Disgusting customer service given the price paid.Won’t be ordering here again.

The quality is superb - from the chicken used to the spice and taste - can’t be matched in my opinion. I would highly recommend. If you need to talk to anyone at the restaurant you are made to feel that you are really valued. We simply wouldn’t go anywhere else. Even in these difficult times, this is the place to go for your take away or delivery. Thank you to all the staff - perfect!!!

Fantastic restaurant, I have eaten or had delivery from most of the top indian restaurants in Swindon but the maharaja is my top choice. A great welcoming Quaint place in Purton. Highly recommend plus our delivery service was excellent.

I am personally a vegan, and struggle to find restaurants that cater for my dietary requirements, however the Maharajah made being a vegan easy! The menu clearly labels the allergen information, so if you have any dietary requirements (not just a vegan) you will find some delicious curry to eat regardless!I spoke to the lovely staff about what i could have on the menu, and they kindly notified me that I could have almost any dish on the menu! All I had to do was tell them I was a vegan, and they could make almost any dish vegan!The food was outstanding, and I would choose no other place to order curry from except The Maharajah! I highly recommend!

After reading positive reviews, we tried the take away service. We didn't get what we expected, the portion size was poor, and the quality average. We wont use them again.

Have not ordered for a while because it was soooo salty ordered again this evening and again very salty !!! Asked to speak to the owner but was told he was not there. I then proceeded to say that the food was not edible and told oh yes you are on the no list we can’t deliver to you because you were rude last time lol wish they had told me that before I had put my order in and spent my money but hey ho don’t bother oredering from here unless you like SALT!!!!!!

Took a 15min trip from home to try a takeaway from here based on positive reviews.Sadly the takeaway was disappointing, The chicken in the biryani was like little cubes of jelly whereas in the masala it was overly large and tasteless. The bhajis were bagged but not crispy, the pakoras average. One good thing - I don't need to travel that far again s wouldn't go back!

As the title states , this is my all time favourite when that craving kicks in. Ordered takeaway many times plus eaten in also, never had a bad meal friendly service , little hidden gem in Purton, Swindon

The poppadoms were great, as was the pickles that came with them. The Naan was great, the onion bhajis were great and the sauce the butter chicken came with was delicious, creamy and sweet....but, the pieces of chicken weren't nice. They tasted a bit processed and were under done. Shame, cos I liked the rest!

What can I say, best Indian I have ever been in over 30 years. Been going here ten years now and the food is just as excellent now as it was ten years ago. The inside has recently been refurbished and the atmosphere is relaxed.The Maharaja is friendly family ran Indian restaurant that cooks amazing quality food using quality fresh ingredients every time. The chicken is melt in your mouth and the lamb is outstanding. Really tender and lean. Even the king prawns are great here...Can not recommend Khalique and the Maharaja enough

After being very disappointed from another Indian restaurant in Downtown Swindon we thought it might be nice to go a bit outside.

The proprietor was here this time. Service and food was both very good like usual. We visit this Indian restaurant regularly.

Have patronised this restaurant regularly for eat-in and takeaway over many years. I was very disappointed by extremely slow and clueless service on a recent visit with a large (pre-booked) group. Only two front of house staff and both had little idea about the job and were clearly struggling. Plates were very lukewarm (yuk) and we were not give warming plates to keep dishes of food warm on the table. Food was fine but it took so long that the ambience of the evening was spoilt. I do hope that the proprietor takes this feedback on board and improves the front of house experience (especially as the pub opposite is just about to start serving food again and may well take custom away from the Maharajah).

So lucky to have such a good indian restaurant on our doorstep. We us them regularly for home delivery and have on many occasion ate in the restaurant.

My wife and I decided to give this restaurant a try having moved into the area recently. The previous reviews on TripAdvisor and the high ranking indicated we were in for a real treat, and our new local indian restaurant.

After trying many different curry houses in the area, we now frequently order from here, it’s our favourite Indian but tonight was exceptional. Everything was above and beyond. Popadoms crisp and then melted in the mouth all curries were so full of flavour and texture. Everything we ordered from starters to nann bread was perfect! We can’t wait to order again!!!

We went on a Saturday night. Restaurant was quiet, only about a dozen people. I had the chicken pakora starter and the hot fish curry as mains. Both was excellent. I have not tried the fish before. I will have it again. The owner was here tonight.

We came here on a Thursday night. The restaurant was quite and we were served very politely. Total cost was £55 for a starter and 2 curries and a bottle of wine.

Got a delivery out Friday. Delivered fairly quickly. Order incorrect, although label said tikka it was definately korma. Special Biryani, asked for medium flavour-it actually had no flavour, worst I've had. Used to love the food from here but definately gone down hill, whats going on?!! That'll be the last time

I went to this restaurant with some friends. The location is very nice and very relaxing.The owner and all the staff are very professional and friendly and let you feel very comfortable. We had an amazing Dal, this is the best indian cuisine that I have tried.

of Purton.... This has to be the very best Indian cuisine for miles around. A extensive menu / wine list and superb atmosphere. Owner Khalique is very genuine and most helpful. Free parking less than 100 yards away. I will not be venturing anywhere else, that's for sure.... Do not pass this by....

Very good takeaway, good size portions and fresh flavours. Good menu with different and unusual dishes available. Estimated time for collection was a little off meaning that food was a little cold but this was a minor issue.

A basic and simple Indian menu, that truly delivers on both flavour and quality. Service is attentive and polite, without over whelming or harassing. Highly recommended the tikka masala a d Madras.

Wanting to treat the wife, we ordered a takeaway from the Maharajah in Purton: Chicken Tikka Passanda, Lamb Moglai, Lamb Jalfrezi, Sag Aloo, Rice & Poppadums for £46.80 delivered. Delivery was meant to be 45 mins, but it arrived 10 minutes - can't fault that.

The food was excellent, with brilliant service. A large range of dishes to choose from. Would highly recommend.

Eventually got round to visiting this restaurant and it proved to be a pleasant experience. The décor is attractive and the restaurant is compact so you are seated close to other diners but this wasn't an issue for us.

For 25 years+ we've enjoyed dining in and take-away meals. The Maharajah in Purton has set the gold standard for superb food and excellent service. When we've dined elsewhere our measure has always been, is it as good as The Maharajah. And honestly, we've never tasted better than The Maharajah in Purton.

We've had both takeaways and eat-in meals at The Maharajah for many years and it's always been good value and an enjoyable meal.

Despite enjoying a good meal our evening was ruined by dreadful customer service. The waiter claimed to have misheard the amount we wished to pay and using 'contactless' charged us more than double the cost of our meal. Thankfully we spotted it. The waiter blamed us and was unfriendly although we did receive a refund. I recommend customers check their receipts! A shame because we had enjoyed the meal; doubt we will return.

Recently visited maharaja ,got a great cordial welcome which impressed us a lot we were four friends there we ordered four mains out of them one was chicken tk main which was simply tasteless I never had such chicken tk in my life it smells buttery and taste awful my friend had noorani chi nothing special similar to bhuna I don't know why they put this dish into specialities ,korma was ok but the rogan gosh was like full of tomato juice and I think the chicken was raw .however the service was very professional and excellent reason I put 4 is just because of service still confused where I should have my next Indian meal?

We had a nice meal, hot tasty food, good service, no complaints there. However when I checked the bill we were charged £16 for a total of 4 pints of blackcurrant and soda. We queried this with the waiter and he agreed that this was excessive, but it was the correct price.If we go again we will be asking for water- if that's still free!!

We had popadoms and pickle tray. The popadoms were nice and the mint sauce was lovely. My wife had passanda which had lots of chicken tikka and a nice sauce. I had the chicken noorani which was a nice thick sauce and packed with flavour.We had pilau rice each and a nan between both of usDrinks we had Diet Coke which was from a bottle at a guess.Great meal, however it was expensive in my mind with the bill coming at just under £50, however I don't mind spending that when the food was this good

Popped in last week for an evening meal and used taste card. Lovely food and staff were very efficient and friendly.My only criticism was that the lights were very bright, just too bright to make it a romantic evening. The place was spotless.All in all a very pleasant evening.

We visited early on a Thursday evening a family group of 6 incl our 2 year old granddaughter. We all ordered different meals which were very tasty not too spicy. God for the three chilli or ask if you like a hotter curry. A little more expensive than others around but well worth it.

We've been here many times over the years but last time we came I felt standards had slipped . We wanted to come back in the hope that it was a blip and it certainly was. We had fabulous service and the food was outstanding . So pleased we returned .

We find maharaja @ Purton one of the best places to come to after an evening on the cricket field. The owner is always welcoming and the staff are attentive. Here are some dishes served to perfection 1. Tandoori chicken 2. Lamb adhraki (moderate spice)3. Lamb kadhai (spicy)None of the above dishes was overpowered with spice. Everything was tasteful . I ordered takeaway from this restaurant and half way through my vegetable passanda I took a bite of what I thought was potato but turned out to be a large piece of chicken. I contacted the restaurant to ask for a full refund, enclosing a photo of the chicken, and heard nothing. Not even an apology. Very disappointed with their attitude and obviously I will not be ordering again.

We were rather disappointed as it had a 5star rating. The quality of the food was good but we had zero spice! My son asked for a Madras and there was no heat at all The combination of spices were totally lacking.It was totally bland!,The waiters were miserable and didn't really want to serve!

Decided to give the Maharajah a try a while ago based on it accepting taste card in the week, wasn't expecting the great quality Indian food we were served, have been back multiple times since and every time the food has been of the highest standard, I've eaten in just about every curry house in and around Swindon and this is top of the list, Chicken Tapeli is my personal fave, if you like something similar to a Jalfrezi give it a try, you won't be disappointed

This is a lovely restaurant, light and airy, clean and welcoming. We hadn't visited before but our friends had and we found the service to be friendly but not pushy so we were able to enjoy our meal and have a long chat afterwards without feeling that they wanted shot of us. We ordered Chicken Balti which came with a Naan Bread of your choice, so for the three of us that had this, we ordered a Peshwari Naan each. Our final meal choice was the Tandoori mixed grill which was delicious but could have done with a bit of sauce but in fairness, it's a grill so you wouldn't normally get sauce. I'm not marking it down as that was our choice of a meal. We ordered a couple of portions of Mushroom rice and an Onion Bhaji. The food was freshly cooked and very tasty and with a couple of drinks each, it came to £82 for the four of us. Would definitely visit this lovely restaurant again.

We came to The Maharajah for Thursday night curry and had a delicious meal and great service. After recommendations from the owner, we had a Goan green and Noorani curry both of which were full of flavour and had just the right level of spice. As always, a lovely atmosphere with the waiting staff, in particular the Romanian waiter, being friendly but not intrusive. Thanks for a great meal and lovely evening.

Went for a night out with the boys to the Maharajah in Purton, was a busy night at the restaurant but the service was still brilliant. I particularly enjoyed the Chicken Goan Green Curry. I will definitely be returning in the not too distant future!

This is my second review of the Maharaja. I felt compelled to write a second review after reading some recent comments about the service.This is a real family owned and ran restaurant that prides itself on great food, service and warm surroundings. It hasn't been that long since the inside was redecorated and they've just refurbished the front of house this summertime too.The food speaks for itself, it's simply the best, always super fresh, and high quality ingredients. The lamb pathia purée is fabulous, the best starter iv ever had.The waiters are lovely. Softly spoken, polite, knowledgable and you never feel rushed, Great service.Eight of us going this Thursday, can't wait

Good curries, some real spicy ones can recommend the specials on the menu...we get a regular takeaway from here always deliver when they say they will and the price is about average for the area. 4 mains, 2 rice, 2 naan 2 prawn pathia starters plus side of Bhaji and 8 papadums with sauces was £72. Only very occasionally the curries can be a bit bland but more often than not they are spot on. Chicken roshni is good as is the chicken chilli mussala. Have eaten at the restaurant as well which was a pleasant experience very friendly with good service!

It was booked for my birthday we arrived and where put in one side on our own other people together in the other side nothing was said about my birthday even though my husband said when booked.the polish waiter hardly spoke.my husband sagalo had little potato almost nearly all spinach.my birani was dry and little sauce.no I will not be going back

Food superb, nice location and nice little restaurant. However, I was charged on 3 separate occasions for items on the bill I did not have and when I challenged this I received no apology. Shame as it would be a regular place for me if not for those 3 negative experiences.

I visited this restaurant for my boyfriends birthday and had a very enjoyable meal. The service was quick and the staff were friendly. The food was delicious and excellently spiced. I do however wish the Bombay potatoes were slightly more spicy and the rice and naan bread were a little bigger. However I will be returning again in the future for another excellent meal.

The first thing that strikes you when you enter the restaurant is the decor. Very stylish, modern and bright, with some lovely ornaments. Could the food live up to the decor? Absolutely. My lamb sag was excellent, really juicy lamb and tasty sauce. My mate's chicken Balti was lively and very tasty. Service wasn't rushed but always there when you wanted it. A little more expensive than the Swindon average but certainly worth the extra.

I think I've had a takeaway from here before but finally got to eat on a week night. Visited with my son who lives in the village, he was aware the restaurant had a good local reputation, we visited on a Monday evening and it was half full.Drinks were standard fare, service efficient if a little impersonal but not unsual in an Indian restaurant.Good quality poppadums and chutneys to start with, food came fairly quickly afterwards, ,food served in china bowls on hot plate, could have been hotter. Dishes looked attractive, although pulau rice reasonable price, portions a bit meagere.Had prawn dhansak which was a bit overpriced at £10.80, however it had good flavour and ingredients but lacked some heat in the spicing, the vegetable jall fraizi was excellent,Overall would give it three and a half out of five , but it's a good find in a village location. We had an enjoyable visit but in terms of Indian cusine, was good but not exceptional.

Visited with my family - the meal was ok no different to many Indian restaurants I've visited. We visited on a Saturday evening and the service was quite slow

Years ago I was told that you should never trust a skinny chef. In these more health conscious times, slender chefs are no longer thought of so warily and we look for other indicators. So it was a pleasure to discover, on arriving very early at the Maharajah, to discover that the only other diner in the restaurant was in fact the owner. We took this as a good sign and our confidence was justified when we tasted the food. Good quality ingredients, good recipes and all beautifully cooked. A thoroughly enjoyable experience and a highly recommended restaurant.

The food here is excellent as usual. We will go here again. We normally visit every 2-3 months at the moment. You would have to be really picky to find anything wrong with the food. The restaurant has done some renovation on the outside, which seemed complete, but the inside is still work in progress. Inside was still very clean and tidy.

Me and my friends have been coming to this restaurant for a while now however this was the first time we ordered a take out from here for one of my friends birthdays. The staff on the phone were extremely friendly and helpful in deciding what to choose as one of my friends had certain allergies that had to be taken into consideration, the way in which this local restaurant labels the containers allows an easier understanding of what was ordered and which container was whose. This is one feature I highly appreciated as my friend with the allergies didn't accidentally eat the wrong food. The timing that the delivery took was on point and did not have to wait any longer than was stated, and the delivery driver was friendly and patient in dealing with us at the door while he took our cash payment. From ordering over the phone to actually eating the food the overall experience we found with a takeout from this restaurant was exquisite. The food was amazing, still hot and just exactly what we ordered. Cannot fault this place in any way :P

This being the first time visiting The Maharajah with my friends and we all agreed that this is the best Indian restaurant we've come across. My marking is based on quality of food., friendliness of waiting staff. The restaurant is beautifully decorated and even the facilities such as the restroom was in immaculate condition. There is some renovation going on the outside of the restaurant, looking forward to seeing it complete soon as me and my friends will definitely be returning.

We are so lucky to have this restaurant that delivers to us since we have a toddler which doesnt allow us to eat out often. The food from this place is absolutely divine, both me and my spouse love the food and have never had a bad experience from ordering from this place! Even the driver is friendly and always makes sure the food is delivered on time and still piping hot!I cannot fault this restaurant in any way possible! just got back off holiday thought we would have an indian takeaway as we have always used this restaurant. food was very poor, chicken tikka dry, mint yoghurt was like water, chicken jalfrazi tasteless and chicken also dry, nan bread not up to standard best thing we ordered was the poppadoms. very disappointed first meal we have had in 2 years not up to usual standard

Came here with my fiancée! She's from Purton and I know it quite well too! I love Indian food and based on the fact that so many people rave about how good the maharajah is and it's local when I'm in Purton we thought we would both go after years of saying we must go so we bit the bullet and decided to book! However I must say it was one of the worst Indian meals I've had in a long long time in terms of the flavour and expense I had one of the more expensive special ones which was meant to be full of flavour!The service was ok but the guy who took the order did so on a Android tablet/ipad which In my opinion was inappropriate and lazy I know it's silly but in all the restaurants in the bigger cities I've been to for food such as London, Cardiff etc no restaurants there use them to take orders and for me it is tacky! For somewhere which has such a "superb" reputation I found the whole experience to be poor and won't come again which is disappointing considering the big expectations I had! I would suggest anyone who wants to go for a curry which is out of this world to go to zaika Inn in Marlborough it is a little more expensive but smashes other Indians of the park such as this one.

Great meal with friends in the Maharajah. Have been here many times and never had a bad meal or a takeaway. With advice from the owner and waiters we tried a number of different starters and main curries this time and were very happy with all of them. Try the butterflies prawn starter and chicken jalfrazi with chillies (be careful some of the green ones are very hot but the sauce is not its just hot and sour). The restaurant is clean, newly decorated and well later out. Food is fresh, served quickly even when busy and of great value. Our group of 3 were well fed and 'beered', for £100 all in and we took some home. Parking across the road in the pub is available and please take a drink there as well.

Been here many times and loved it. The last time we went the menu had completely changed which is fine but it is covered in symbols that tell you everything about the dish. Far too busy and off putting . We found the service to be slow on our last visit but this time the service was terrible. The waiters were grumpy and rude. We had to ask 3 times for our poppadoms and drinks. We waited about 40 mins for our mains after our starters and never received 1 of our mains at all. However the food we had was still very good . When I complained to the manager he wasn't bothered and said he would not charge us for poppadoms as a good will gesture. When we received our bill we had been charged for 1 extra starter and the main we never received . On this experience we won't return.
