Visited The Balham Lounge on a weekday night at 8.00. The place was very quiet but by the time we left at 10ish the place was buzzing in a relaxed hot Spain way with people chowing down the great food whilst sitting at the bar, greedily licking their fingers and slurping their way through the carefully curated New Zealand wines. If you’re local it’s great, if not make your way to Balham and bypass the chains, grab a pint at the Bedford for old times sake (remember the Banana Cabaret ? ) and skip to the Balham Lounge before the hipster idiots with their daft beards claim it as their ownA couple of messages to the owners – don’t be so mean on the sides of veg, and don’t ignore customers while talking to a rep – we saw one person walk out

A large group of us came for dinner, expecting the warm hospitality of the lovely couple that used to own it. Instead, we discovered they had left, taken 80% of the menu and much of the crowd with them. With a deep sense of foreboding we decided to stay regardless and were very glad of it. The new owners have stripped the menu down to the point where frankly, it looks like there's not enough to have a proper meal. But this is incorrect. The prices have remained roughly the same but the quality of the food has gone from good to exceptional and the new hosts are eager to please. What used to be a nice place to enjoy some nibbles with friends has become a nice place to enjoy some of the best tapas in London with friends.

We enjoyed our evening at The Lounge however it could be even better. The biggest issue is price and portion size. When compared to similar prices for other types of food it is expensive. The food is good quality and well cooked and the place has a family run feel which is lovely. If this issue could be addressed then I'd give them a higher rating.

When we arrived we were the only table in the restaurant. Our jug of sangria was made within 5 mins of sitting down (they had a 2-for-1 on drinks too!) and after ordering food, the first dishes arrived within 10 mins. Delicious food and fairly large portion sizes compared to other tapas restaurants I have visited in the UK. The restaurant became more busy as the evening went on but the service was fantastic and we did not feel neglected at all - I didn't mind paying the 12.5% service charge that was added to the bill at the end.

We went there because of the great reviews on opentable but I was ver disappointed. The food is not that great, it is more like processed food than Spanish tapas. Being half Spanish I can assure you this is not the food we have in Spain. The charcuterie is basically a pack you could find in any supermarket. The prawns are just shrimp dipped in butter. The tapas are oily and a bit tasteless. The bread was the only good food on the table. Very good service though but it was way too expensive for what we had.

We have been visiting this family owned and run restaurant for many years. We are always made to feel appreciated and welcome and the food, which is normally cooked by Philippe (one of the owners) is consistently of a very high standard. If you are like me and enjoy offal, then I would really recommend you try the Kidneys in red wine. Turned up at half 8 on a Friday and luckily managed to get the last free table. It's clearly a popular local family run restaurant. There was only the lady owner and one waiter dashing around serving everyone but they were very apologetic for any delays. The sangria was great and is available by the glass or jug. We were advised that 2-3 plates each was about right so ordered 5 for the 2 of us which was perfect. We had chorizo, patatas bravas, whitebait, scallops & stuffed peppers. The whitebait & scallops were amazing, the others great too. The food did take a little while but more than happy to wait for good fresh food. It also took quite a while to get the bill but again they were very apologetic for this and clearly very busy. Overall great tapas but could do with an extra waiter on a Friday night.

We have been to this Tapas place many times over the last 2 years and each time it never fails to deliver. Relatively small cosy place with great food and very nice waitress and chef. Our favourites include the King Prawns, the sauce is amazing and if they served that alone we would lap it up with the bread.Everything we have had has been tasty, unlike other tapas places which are quite bland. Mussells nice and plump, Pepper stuffed with Spinach and smaller pepper are a nice side to accompany the Bravas, the chorizo / meatballs or chicken pieces. The team that work there are simply nice people who welcome us and cook some really good food which as mentioned remains the same quality each time.. On days where its full / busy, the food may take a little more time to arrive, but you can be sure the dishes you get remain a consistent level and no corners are cut.Very much recommended by me and many of our friends who visit.

I've now been to the Lounge twice and have been left very impressed with the food on both occasions. The Lounge is run by a husband and wife team, the husband being the chef and the wife being the front of house. It is great to see a family running a local restaurant and I really want such places to succeed, especially when you see the genuine care, enthusiasm and passion that goes into it. The decor and ambience could be a little better inside but the female owner certainly makes up for this, adding a genuine warmth that makes you feel instantly welcome and valued. It is not quite a place for a special romantic evening, but it is certainly a place for a casual, fun evening whether you are a couple, family or a group of friends. My girlfriend and I had 5 plates of tapas - patatas bravas, chorizo, padron peppers, grilled asparagus with cheese and stuffed peppers with spinach and cheese - all of which were excellent. The padron peppers (with a little extra salt) and the stuffed peppers stood out in particular - to die for! We also had a charcuterie board of Spanish meats and a bottle of Rioja Blanco, both of which were very good. The meal came to £70 including service which was well worth it for the quality of the food and the wine, but admittedly whilst we were a little extravagant it is not somewhere we could go as regularly as we would like. With that in mind I would still highly recommend the Lounge to anyone in the local area that wants to experience excellent tapas with some fantastic service.

We visited here one evening, the place was empty, the six or seven tapas we ordered were not great, The bravas was mean portion with watery thin tasteless sauce. The prawns in chilli and garlic oil were pathetic. £6.75 for TWO prawns in shells in a bit of oil, YES TWO PRAWNS!!! The décor is tired and dirty and there was a standard 12.5 percent charge on top of their already high prices for substandard food. Go elsewhere.

This is a tapas restaurant where you are assured of a warm and frIendly welcome. We ate there on a Saturday evening and the place was reassuringly full. The menu contains a good range of tapas to choose from, including vegetarian, and having made our selection, each item arrived as soon as it was ready. The food was well cooked and appropriately spicy.Service wasn't the best though and I think that this was largely to do with how busy it was. The lady in charge (I assume the proprietor) was very apologetic about this and went out of her way to make sure that we enjoyed our evening. Be aware that the name of the place 'The Lounge' is something of a misnomer, as dining is on wooden school chairs and at wooden tables. The style is deliberately chosen though and works well with the overall setting. We had a lovely evening and our bill for three did not break the bank. We would definitely eat there again.

We stumbled across The Lounge before going out and gave it a try as we wanted to have just a few little bits. I had seen reviews when looking up the area but thought it looked a bit shabby on the pictures. It looks better in the flesh but decor could be improved inside (a back wall with a big TV on rather than a large Spanish picture, possibly a throw back from its previous owners?). We ordered 7 dishes which was more than enough, very substantial. I see other reviews have mentioned small portions so could largely depend on what you order. Patatas Bravas- large portion, fairly spicy sauceEnsalada mixta- large portion, good to have with many of the dishesBacalao Fritos - (Cod fritters), large portion, extremely fishy and tasted a little bit boney, creamy inside and very crunchy on the outsideEmpanadillas de Gambas (Prawn croquettes), large portion, interesting coating for a croquette, reminded me of findus crispy pancakes, very tastyPincho de Pollo, small portion but very good chicken, came with no sauce as many of the dishes didn't which I would preferCostilla de Cerdo Grillada, large portion but really not to my taste, no sauce and just did not have much flavourAlcachofas Vinagreta (Artichoke), large portion, I love artichoke but did not have a huge amount of flavour.Overall it came to £50, which is ok for London but did not blow us away. They added the 12.5% service charge to bill which I personally don't like, I think it should be decided by the customer or only added for larger groups. San Miguel on tap. Accommodating/friendly service, better to book as they do appear to get fairly busy. Be aware that they bring out the food when it is ready so it comes out at different times.

We visited this restaurant on the evening of 29th Oct 2014.We were hoping to experience true authentic tapas, and travelled all the way from Putney, for a change of scenery and food, since we had read the reviews on 'open table'.Frankly, there are so many better Tapas Restaurants in London. And the reviews on 'open table' are totally misleading! We would question the type of 'foodies' who would choose to eat in such a place.Following our order, the food arrived 40 mins. later.................there were only 16 covers when we arrived at 8.40 pm, with 2 more arriving before our departure, The Restaurant was half empty, and therefore not busy. One wonders how they would cope at a weekend. The Patron was perfectly polite; however, the food was very poor by Tapas standards. The portion sizes did in no way reflect the prices charged, and the wine list is hugely expensive for a local Tapas Restaurant, with the cheapest wine being House Wine at £18.10.We are experienced Tapas eaters, and this Restaurant was such a disappointment, to say the least. One further point to add - we were served a portion of Rinones (Kidneys).......these were practically inedible, and we did not eat them. Naturally we expected the Owner to not charge for this item. However, it was included on our bill without question. We were told that this dish is a speciality of the house. One wonders what Balham residents' expectations are of this Restaurant. It in no way met ours and we would not return in the future.7 very small tapas portions and a bottle of house wine came to £75, including a 12.5% service charge - unjustifiable prices for small portions and low quality food.We were also charged £1.80 for a portion of bread.Bean and Chorizo / Black Pudding / Ham Soup / Stew - flavourlessPrawns in olive oil, garlic and chilli - tiny portionSpicy Chicken Wings - dull, boring and tastelessPeppers de Padron - tiny portion - ridiculous priceGrilled Squid / Calamari - the best dish of the 7 Kidneys - dreadfulScallops - tiny portion and dreadful - like rubber and tasted as much!We have taken the time to write this review, as we were so disappointed with our evening. It was our first and last visit. In its defence, upon protestation, the lady of the house knocked £6 off our bill re: the inedible kidneys. Believe me, we know our kidneys, and these pork kidneys were dreadful! We should not have had to ask for a refund. All in all, a poor and totally unsatisfying and hugely disappointing experience. We would not recommend this Restaurant to anyone. A waste of money!Yours, TJM

Although The Lounge receives good reviews on Tripadvisor I booked on a day when there was 2 large parties comprising of over 10 people per table (unfortunately I was not advised of this). As the restaurant is small the noise that was generated prevented any conversation with my boyfriend unless we wanted to yell at one another. Due to the large tables the service was lacking as they were focusing on the large tables. Whilst the food was OK it was not particularly inspiring and was generally rather bland. At £73 for a meal for 2 with 1 glass of wine and 1 bottle of beer, it was a little overpriced.

This should be buzzing every night, problem is that it looks like someones 1980's conservatory. It needs to be warm and inviting, some Spanish influences would make it a lot nicer. It actually does remind me of Spain but it's a restaurant in a British resort which sells burgers and does karoake sadly.

Attended last Saturday for dinner with my mum, lovely food and very good service. It's nice to see an independent restaurant doing so well, loved the authentic tapas and feel of the place, you could almost be in Spain! Will definitely be visiting again soon.

Really nice people who run the place. Very relaxed atmosphere and the food was superb! One dish was delayed slightly, we didn;t even notice, but they gave us an extra free dish to compensate! Would highly recommend trying this place as we would definitely return.

Booked this after seeing some good reviews on Trip Advisor so went onto website and booked via Top Table.Great choice of seafood, meat and vegetarian tapas only 200 metres from the Banana Cabaret comedy venue. About a 5 minute walk from Balham high street where the train / tube station is.Nice range of wines and didn't cost the earth. In fact £150 for 6 adults to eat with 2 bottles of wine and draught beer. Price also included service charge.Although we went with friends, I would definitely recommend this restaurant for couples and families as well. Hostess was very attentive and gave plenty of recommendations on food choice.

Booked up this restaurant for a Saturday evening after seeing several positive reviews on Trip Advisor. The location is great especially as its only 200m from the Banana Cabaret comedy at the Bedford. 6 of us went to dine and were greeted on arrival by the hostess. Very friendly. Wine list was pretty impressive with good selection of White, Rose and Red. San Miguel was on draft. The tapas menu had about 30% seafood on it which was great for a few of us. Plenty of chicken, pork, chorizo, meatball dishes plus lots of other choice. Whitebait and Prawn dishes were particularly good. Dinner for 6 including wine and beers was £153. This included a service charge. Food served promptly. Very enjoyable and would definitely go back.

Food was excellent. It often looks very quiet in here but business seems to have picked up and the night we went there was a nice atmosphere. The staff were super friendly.

Well this was my first visit to The Lounge Spanish Tapas Bar and I will definitely return again with friends. The owner, a lovely lady, looked after us beautifully and the food was absolutely delicious. Great atmosphere and excellent wine not overpriced. Recommended!

We went to the lounge on a Wednesday evening and although the restaurant was not busy the friendly prompt service and the absolutely delicious tapas made up for the quiet ambience. The food was fresh, well prepared and served promptly with a smile! The sangria was one of the best I've had!! Highly recommend this little restaurant and will definitely be heading back soon!

Nice food, but the restaurant was so loud I couldn't talk to my guests. As all tables are in the same position everyone just shouts! I think the design of the room means that the sound just bounces off the walls. Wouldn't go again on a Saturday night.

The staff here are absolutely charming, warm and welcoming.Tapas makes a delightful change from other types of restaurant food. There's plenty to chose from, but keep in mind that they are only small (a mouthful each for two!). That's perfect if you just want a snack with a glass of wine, but if you're hungry you'll probably need to order a few. Or keep your options open and order more later if you're still peckish - it's really not a problem.Quality of the food is good. The dessert menu is rather limited, but the Spanish style rice pudding was tasty. The place gets fairly busy Friday and Saturday night, so it might be wise to book if you want to be sure of a table.

We ordered two tapas each and they were all delicious. No need for any dessert afterwards. The rioja was lovely. Friendly service. Feels like a proper family-run place.

I went there for a first date so I was pretty nervous. The place was a little quiet at first but got quite busy after a while. Despite this, the staff always looked after us and made us feel like a priority. The food was delicious and there was a good selection on the menu. We spent quite a while talking but they never made us feel rushed and were very friendly throughout. Good place, I'll definitely go back.

We had a great meal here on a Friday evening. The food was excellent, traditional tapas. We were drawn to all the seafood tapas - Calamari, both of the gambas dishes which were all great. This place has a great local restaurant feel about it, with very attentive, friendly service from the woman who appeared to be the owner. The wine list is pretty average though - I recommend going towards the bottom of the list..

We visited on a Friday night for my Birthday. We were running late but the restaurant were still very accommodating despite being so busy. Waitress in particular was excellent and our Sangria was brought over swiftly. Slight wait for tapas but understandable as so busy. We felt slightly neglected as soon as we were given our tapas - we were missing a bread plate and also jug of water but food was so excellent we were perfectly happy. Once our plates had been cleared we weren't offered dessert or coffees and were only brought our bill when we started to put our coats on. We were charged for the missing bread plate but the staff were quick to correct this for us. Not a deal breaker as I expect they were understaffed. Would visit again.

Food was good but you pay a lot for not much - scallops were tasty but you only get about 2.5 diced up for £6.80...
Meatballs were good - don't bother with the cheese starter it's nearly £6 for a few slices of cheese and 1 slice of tomato!

I'm disappointed with this restaurant. I can't understand why so many people put good rate. The foods aren't authentic Spanish. The restaurant looks like a Mexican. All meals were so spice and the "Tortilla" had a sauce like "Curry" mixed!
When I book it I was waiting to have the authentic Spanish dishes.. And the price isn't good. Expensive! ~45 pounds for some tapas!

This place consistently does what it sets out to – simple, tasty tapas served informally by the friendly team. There is a good selection of all the usual tapas suspects, and at very sensible prices. The wine list could do with just a little more thought, but it's also reasonably priced.
