Visited for a group meal. Food for over 40 people was brought out quickly. We had ordered our dishes beforehand but I was impressed by the staff who were efficient and friendly. Food was hot and tasty and very good value for money. We had a lovely evening.

£5:20 for a pint. Expensive. A few miles' walk along SUSTRANS route 64 from Northgate Station, Newark-on-Trent.

Party of 5 with no booking arrived for early evening dinner after fishing, very warm welcome with good selection of beers All our meals were excellent and off of their £10 menu Definitely recommend and will return in September when we next visit the area

Brilliant staff, very friendly and attentive, delicious lunchtime meal, very good value … my husband opted for the gammon meal from the £10 menu and it was superb, I had the steak from the a la carte and it was delicious, well cooked and tender meat. In all we had a fabulous lunch, I’ve put 4 stars for atmosphere only because it was probably their quietest lunchtime service, we had a lovely visit and great meal. Will definitely return.

Excellent Sunday lunch experience with very attentive staff and great quality food at a reasonable price. Lovely surroundings in this historic building and plenty of outdoor seating and parking. Would recommend for the roast potatoes alone!

Visited last night to celebrate sister's birthday. Although a lot of the menu positions unavailable the food was fine. Waiting time for drinks 20 minutes. Waiting time for food 50 minutes. Level of service...SHOCKING! A young girl with a snappy attitude chucking desert menu on our table. Shame because the place seems nice.

Amazing £10 menu We had heard lots of compliments about the new £10 per meal menu and decide to give it a try. We weren’t disappointed. From the moment we entered we were made to feel welcome. we had visited the pub a few months ago on a Saturday night and it was very quiet, however the place was busy and had a lovely atmosphere. The staff were very attentive, warm and friendly despite having a big table in that arrived at different times and having to keep everyone happy. The dishes weren’t huge but there was certainly enough and it tasted fresh and well cooked. - too much main for a pudding!!!!!! The food is good pub food with a range to suit all tastes. The management have clearly listened to what customers want and fulfilled this. The pub has found its niche and hopefully this £10 menu will continue. Would we go back? Most definitely. A lovely pub with a great atmosphere. Fabulous food, staff and management who listen to what the community wants. Keep up the good work.

Poped in on the long travel home needed a pit stop Couldn't ask for better staff so attending and dog friendly 😊 Great drinks available on tap food definitely filled a spot glad they have vegan options available as I don't like meat. only downside is the little dinky tea cups couldn't get my fingers through the hole. 😅 If I lived closer I would 100% go again Great work guys raise coming your way 👏

Beautiful place full of character.

The food was ok with a very limited menu. Had sausage and mash served in a bowl like a bucket, making it rather difficult to actually eat it. Staff were great, but for an old pub on a winter night, I was kinda hoping the fireplaces would be going to add to the atmosphere. Would visit again

Food overall was a disappointment. We visited for a midweek dinner. It was the first night of a set menu so maybe the quality of food wasn’t what it normally is. We haven’t eaten there before only had drinks so can’t compare. The crispy prawn starters were nice, they didn’t appear homemade so hard to go wrong but were tasty. Olives & breads came with a dipping oil, it didn’t really taste like olive oil & was just a pot of oil. Normally it would have balsamic or flavoured but this tasted like sunflower oil. The fish & chips ranked the best of the mains. I opted for pan fried Sea Bass on a bed of baked baby potatoes, cherry tomatoes & spinach. The sea bass was nicely cooked would have been nice with a slight crisp to the skin but that’s personal preference. The mint salsa had big chunks of cold pepper with mint salsa, didn’t really compliment the dish. However the baked baby potatoes weren’t baby potatoes but quartered potato. Some were hot & some cold. I asked if the potatoes are made in advance and reheated. I was told they had been ‘cooked fresh’ for me. I’ll let you decide if they look freshly cooked to you… I said about them not being a consistent temperature & was told they might have been sat under the lamp. No apology or alternative offered. Had the potatoes been reheated I would’ve understood. They were cooked through which is surprising to say they were baked especially for me in the timeframe. Husband had a sirloin steak it was ok, nothing to write home about. Child had a pizza from the kids menu. Again it was ok, decent size but just a cheap pizza with minimal topping. The kids shared a Brownie which they said was ok. Nice decor & it’s lovely in summer but I wouldn’t go back for food. The staff were friendly especially the young man who served us most of the night. Drinks orders were relatively quick too. I’m a frequent google reviewer & I don’t take leaving reviews like this lightly but I do like to be honest. If you’re a trader at the fairground it could be right enough if you take in convenience of the location to the showground but expect mediocre at best food.

Fabulous service. Food was great I had the newly introduced to the menu sweet chill hallumi in pitta with sweet potato fries so filling and tasty. My husband had the Haddock and chips again was a fab meal well presented and well worth the money. We will definitely be back (will walk next time 😉)

Very quiet night on our visit, I had Pigeon Breast for a starter and their Fish & Chips, great food, great service and reasonably priced.

What a find! A lovely gastro pub in a lovely village. The service was excellent. Ollie and his team of young waiters were superb. Attentive but not in the way and knowledgeable about the menu. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was really relaxed. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and looking forward to going back very soon. Would highly recommend.

As part of a walking group we often pre walk a route before taking a large group and of course try out a pub for lunch. Today Sunday lunch was an option on the menu, Beef or Lamb with all of the trimmings. Fabulous is probably the right word to describe it. Looking forward to taking our walking group for lunch after a 6 to 7 mile hike.

Absolutely amazing staff and would definitely recommend visiting when in the area. Even though all the staff were young they were incredibly kind and respectful throughout our entire meal. Service a bit slow but food very good

What a gem of a pub! We were desperately looking for a good place to meet some friends for lunch, halfway between us. Our usual haunts had either changed ownership or weren't as good as they used to be. I found the Lord Nelson through a Google search, our friends agreed we should try it, so I booked us in for lunch last Saturday. From the moment we walked in, we loved it! We were greeted so warmly by all the staff who were at or around the bar area, asked where we would like to sit and shown to our desired table. Menus were brought and drinks orders taken immediately. It was apparent that the staff had been highly trained, in particular to be courteous and friendly, to be aware that customers had come to their establishment to enjoy themselves and that their role was all-important in helping the customers to have a happy experience. Then the food: it was "out of this world", prepared and presented with care and eye appeal. Everything we had was so beautifully cooked and tasty. I had the best Stilton sauce I have ever tasted on my ribeye steak. The chips were crisp and cooked to perfection. When it came to dessert, we all ordered the Jamaican ginger sponge with a boozy hot caramel sauce. We were told that the chef would be making them freshly for us. That obviously necessitated a short wait and when it arrived we had a spectacular taste experience - it was incredible! We left the pub to take a short walk round the pretty village of Winthorpe and then returned for coffee. We were fascinated by the little snug area with its castle-like turret, coffee table, comfy sofa and open log fire, so sat there to enjoy our drinks. Even the coffee was superior and we complimented the young man behind the bar, who had prepared it for us. I asked him one or two questions about the village and he was very happy to engage in conversation with the four of us, who were old enough to be his grandparents! All in all, a great time was enjoyed by us, made possible by all the lovely staff and their amazing combined talents for cooking for and serving their customers with joy and expertise. This has now become our new "in" place for our meet-ups. Well done, all who are employed at the Lord Nelson. It's not often we find this level of service, quality and highly trained staff when we eat out. You made our day and we will definitely return. Thank you so much!

Had a meal there this evening, it’s been my first visit. The 2 waitresses were lovely and attentive. I asked one of them to recommend a dish as I was spoilt for choice. The pie she recommended was absolutely delicious, very well made and presented. Meal was very filling and couldn’t finish it. Have absolute no hesitation in recommending the Lord Nelson and will definitely be going again. Compliments to the chef. Thank you all for a warm welcome, lovely surroundings and a delicious meal.

If I could give it 0 I would, ordered starter and didn’t get it the girl forgot to put it through, ordered the vege main of risotto and it was extremely bland and like wallpaper paste, inedible. I didn’t care to tempt fate with a dessert. The service was also awful, 1 hour waits for mains and it wasn’t even busy. Been here before and it was good but would stay away at all costs. Awful

Been here a couple of times now as they are dog friendly and so our family can take their dog in, which is really good. Really nice place staff very warm and friendly. Didn't have food today, but have eaten there before, and that was very nice as well

We went to the Christmas Market. A friend of ours had a stall selling his wonderfull paintings. Auther bagley. There were lots of other people selling a fine selection of Christmas crafts and wares. The pub looked delightful. A proper country pub and the food looked lovely

Went for a Sunday roast with friends, very slow service, the waitress was probably new as she couldn't answer any questions about the food. The meat was chewy, vegetables, rice and vegetarian dishes were tasteless. I felt embarrassed in front of my friends as I've heard good opinions about the pub and we were prepared for a treat.

Food was excellent. Probably the best roast beef I have had for a long time. It was served with a was very good selection of vegetables, roast potatoes and mash perfectly cooked. Service was very good.

Had Sunday lunch here recently with 13 of us there . One person wanted a Yorkshire pudding which wasn’t part of the Sunday lunch meal . They said it would be an extra 50p for this !! When you’ve got 13 people already there paying for a meal they can’t give that for free . My beef was very tough , like shoe leather . I won’t be returning .

Gave this venue another chance, as previously suggested day lunch was chaotic and under par. They now have new owners Only 2 choices for sunday lunch 1 being lamb £15.00 BTW. Although other choices on the menu. We asked if we could have smaller portions .....my friend is 85 and I have had bariatric surgery and they graciously accepted. 1: lamb was plentiful but mine had 3 " tumours " in it. 2: my friend found it tough to chew. 3: 3 small roasties each ( that's okay) 4: No mashed potato. 5: Very small sharing dish of sliced carrot- as hard as bullets. 6: Cabbage ( was lovely ) 7: Cubed courgette ( tasteless) 8: waterey gravy - not pleasant. 9. Service very slow and 3 times we were bought the wrong drinks. Beautiful surroundings though , but I would like a decent meal. My friend loved her dessert but for this cost almost £46. We won't be giving you and 3rd or 4th chance, sorry.

I visited the Lord Nelson yesterday for lunch, taking my Mum and some of her friends out for a meal. We had booked the table on the phone for 1:30. When we arrived we were told that the pub was now on “winter hours” and they closed at 2:30. They said someone should have told us this when we booked, however they would keep the pub open for us. We had a main meal, which was average, 2 deserts which were lovely, a round of drinks and a cup of tea. A member of staff came to the table to take our desert order and told us not to be rude but they closed at 2:30. When I said no one had told us at the time of booking she said “well it is on the board outside”. Obviously I can’t see the board from my house as I don’t have supersonic sight!! We ordered 2 deserts and a cup of tea whilst they made it blatantly obvious they were not happy with us being there by being nothing but rude. My mum and her friends are in their 70’s and we’re looking forward to a lunch out together. I visit the Nelson a fair bit as a local and I’ve never experienced this type of behaviour and service before. It’s going to be a long while before I revisit, if again. So disappointed as it did upset my mum. I wanted to say something at the time but reluctant given the circumstances and didn’t want to make it any more unpleasant than it was. Shame on you!

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to Emma and her staff for making our wedding day perfect, from the very first meeting nothing was too much trouble and she sorted everything out for us meaning we didn't have a single thing to worry about, the BarBQ was awesome and she even made our cake for us, thank you so much. If anyone is looking for an outdoor venue their beer garden is just perfect for any event and the food, beer and all of the staff are great.

Visited last night for a drink and food with my Mother. We both had the lamb shank and it was beautifully cooked. The food and customer service was excellent. I’d definitely visit again. The pub is beautifully decorated and the beer garden is well kept and caters for many.

The bar staff have always been great when we have visited. Today the owner was in and was very unwelcoming our son struggles with different food’s and we always have to take his regular bits with him, we have never had a problem in any other establishments when out for drinks or dining. We explained about his situation and was told she didn’t care if he was autistic and that it was her pub and people are not allowed to bring in food from outside. This was disgusting to say the least we left with our son in tears feeling embarrassed and upset because he didn’t understand and thought it was his fault. I hope that nobody has to go through this again. !!!!!!!! Avoid this pub !!!!!!!!!

Went to the steak night tonight and not impressed at all. A lot of fat and grissle on the steak and asked for medium rare and got medium. On the menu it stated you get a bottle of wine with your meal. We were never offered it and went away not having it even to take away.

Well what a little gem ... we recently moved to this area and have been exploring and trying local pub food and were very impressed by the food and excellent service... we didn’t book because it was a Wednesday lunchtime and didn’t think we needed to .. but we were lucky to get a table.. we will definitely book next time because the food is excellent the service we received from Kelly and Chloe was outstanding.. well done guys.. you really made a difference to our day ... we will be returning 😋 we had the fish and chips... awesome 👍

Had a super Mother's day meal today, friendly staff,tasty beef,comps to the chef . Hadn't been for long time so we'll be back again.

We vowed never to darken the door of this establishment after the new owner took over. We where regular customers and then we vististed the week after suzie took over, we found her to be very rude and abrupt. But today we decided to give it one more chance and what a difference the staff made. I think if suzie had been there i would be writing a very different review as speaking to a couple opposite they had the same opinion of her. Very friendly and professional staff i would recommend to go when the owner is definitely not there.

Have always been happy with food and welcome however, booked a table to celebrate my daughters birthday and clearly made sure they knew I was bringing my small dog - on arrival it was clear this was a problem as this had not been noted I felt totally unwelcome right from the start the woman who I assume was the manager spotted I had a birthday cake and quickly said it was a £10 charge for bringing out with 6 serviettes and lighting the candles - later she then proceeded to clear the table and remove the water making it clear she wanted us gone (there were others in the pub) had it not been for the staff who attended our table the whole experience would have been awful. (Footnote we normally order a pudding even though we have a cake so they missed out)

Last minute reservation and couldn't have been more helpful. Lovely independent pub restaurant, Great food from a small but good menu. Will definitely return
