We made an online reservation for a Friday night at 730 for 8 people. Got an email reminder on the day of the reservation. Turned up and the whole place was locked up. Next door said they closed last week so we were stuck in Oakham hungry with nowhere to go!

The Lord Nelson has a lot of potential, but my recent visit left me with mixed feelings, so I'm giving it three stars. The pub has a charming atmosphere with a cozy, traditional setting that's perfect for a relaxing evening. The food and drink selection is solid, with some tasty options that make it a local favorite. However, the service was disappointingly slow. Despite the pub not being overly busy, we waited far too long for our orders to be taken and even longer for the food to arrive. The staff were friendly enough, but the delays really put a damper on the experience. Overall, the Lord Nelson has a lot going for it, but the slow service is something that needs improvement. With quicker, more efficient service, this pub could easily be a top spot.

A beautiful 16th century public house. Lots of nooks and crannies affording privacy and a more intimate experience. the staff are very friendly and obliging. The food was excellent, we all had something different and all enjoyed their meals. I docked one star for atmosphere, simply because we dined at 1700hrs. So in fairness it was still very quiet in the bars. I dare say it gets quite lively later on. Over all a very enjoyable meal out.

Our first time here, and it was absolutely fantastic. The food was delicious, all our party agreed on that. The building is beautiful, each room full of character.. The staff were professional, polite, friendly and a joy to talk to. Prices were incredibly reasonable for the high quality of the food. Wonderful atmosphere, it was a really lovely evening. I will definitely be returning, and would highly recommend The Lord Nelson

Fabulous pub in a great location, and surprisingly for a tourist place, one of few places that seemed to be open for food. The best bar manager and staff i've ever encountered, warm and friendly and very patient! As it was very warm i wanted my favourite summer drink a ginger beer shandy, but wanted a local ale/beer to go with it. Luke insisted i try and gave me tasters of every single one as he wanted me to find the perfect combination - and i did! What a lovely, smashing bloke! Then had a great meal, so all in all a lovely evening. If i were in the vicinity, would definitely go again.

We left Oakham 5 years ago to live in Scotland and came back for a weekend to relive our previous good times. Top of the list for a meal was the Nelson. We were in Friday night for a drink and the place was virtually empty..clearly deserted by Oakhamites, so were worried about the Saturday night meal especially with some of the reviews. It was a little busier and got a bit busier later and the food unexpectedly had a pizza menu something I had resigned myself to not seeing after viewing the online menu - it all worked out really fab. The point of this rambling review was to say that before the original lockdown the Nelson was a very popular venue..it was very busy on weekends, no need for tv’s and had great beers and most importantly best pizza in the town for 2 with a bottle deal..this was amazingly popular and made for a great night. Fast forward and it seems the Nelson isn’t the place to go anymore! Very recent management again looking to try and restore that popularity! Needs to happen..don’t want to come back in another few years to yet another coffee shop. This weekend, the service, friendliness and food was excellent!! Please please please take a look at the original model 2017/18 ish and the good times will return.

I’d been here a few times several years ago because it’s a dog friendly place and the food was always excellent. This is the first time I’ve visited since management changed hands. My husband nailed it by saying they used to have a chef and now just people who know how to warm things up. The place was totally dead for a Sunday - it always used to be heaving on Sundays before - this says a lot about the food and service. We ordered a sharing platter - this was truly shockingly bad - burnt tortilla chips with cremated cheese and though they changed these with no bother I struggle to see how these are Mexican nachos when there was no other toppings o cheap tortilla chips. The garlic bread was awful and so were the onion rings and chicken - everything was sooo greasy. A house salad drowning in dressing was the rubbish icing on the cake - the roast dinners we ordered were very poor too - no seasoning at all apart from the salty gravy. Ham egg and chips looked like something you’d get at a really poor chain pub. This was all such a shame when the food and overall atmosphere before was lovely - why is it so hard to get even these basics right?! Won’t be visiting again sadly - such a shame

Funny thing happened. I come to the bar and ask if I can get Espresso Martini. Person at the bar turns away and looks at the four different Martini branded vermouths then looks at me and says “No” 😅 to anyone who is not into cocktails the recipe for it: ice, vodka, espresso shot and coffee liqueur. Then two people from our party ordered burgers that were supposed to come with onion rings. They were served without and one of my friends had to point it out to the waiter. He went to the kitchen and came back to say that they have ran out. My dish had missing spring onions too. It is disappointing that we were not offered a substitute for missing items nor were told about that before the food was served. As if we would not notice it.

Wasnt going to write a review, but recieved an email asking me to so here goes. Booking a table for my Son and I for 1900 on a Friday night. Arrived and went to the bar. Explained we had reserved a table and the bar staff said dont worry, sit anywhere. Sons first pint was awful. Flat and qarm, so asked to change which the staff did. Asked to start a tab as we were having food which they did. Sat outside looking at the stained dog eared menus and went back to the bar to order. Was then informed the kitchen was shut. Disgusted is being polite. Asked to settle the bill and we would leave. Bar staff couldnt find the bar tab they started so said it was too much hastle to work out we could have the drinks on the house. Shocking staff, dirty glasses and an untidy premises. Will not be back. This is such a shame as this used to be a top place to eat and socialise. With a recent fire in one of its comptitors forcing it to close they are missing a trick. I would definately not recomend. Stick to the Grainstore.

Amazing venue for a birthday party! The Lord Nelson had a fantastic ambience, with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The food was absolutely delicious, with a great variety of options to choose from. Our compliments to the chef. The portions were awesome and you definitely get your money’s worth. There was absolutely nothing that we could fault with the food. The fantastic bar staff were absolutely amazing, providing friendly and attentive service throughout the celebration. They went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a great time. When our meal ran over slightly (mainly because we were late arriving) the barman asked the surprise guests to wait downstairs until we had finished. The Lord Nelson was not only accommodating but also allowed us to put up our own decorations for the birthday party. This added a personal touch and made the venue feel even more festive and tailored to our celebration. It's wonderful when a place goes the extra mile to make your event special. They have separate rooms of various different sizes to suit your party size. Each individual and unique. Cheers to all the staff at The Lord Nelson for their flexibility and for helping create a truly memorable and personalized birthday party experience for our 21 year old Son! 🥳🎉🎈

Very disappointed with how badly downhill the Nelson has gone under this new management. Unfortunately I have nothing positive to say at all. I arranged to meet family from Chicago at the Nelson on Monday night. Their website opening times declare that they are open on Mondays from noon until 11pm, and that the kitchen is open until 9. I rang several times on Monday afternoon to no avail, so I booked a table through the online booking form instead. When we arrived at 7.45 the staff knew nothing of any booking, and said the kitchen was closing at 8, but we could still eat if we got an order in fast. We quickly ordered noodles, a burger, fish and chips and some sides. The food came out luke-warm, served in a hurry by unwelcoming staff. Our portions were very small, so much so that my uncle joked about them being "kids meals". We weren't offered condiments or sauces, nobody came to check if we were happy with our meal. We felt like an inconvenience. The only upside was that the local ukulele society had taken over the bar area, and afforded us with some amusement and entertainment. So disappointing, we used to love the Lord Nelson, as it had a great atmosphere and food to die for, including what used to be the best pizzas in Rutland. We will not be going back, despite the tentalising prospect of listening to more popular hits played on the ukulele .

Terrible place to eat. This establishment has gone downhill which could be attributed to maybe a change of ownership. It’s a shame because it had a good reputation and was a nice place to eat. The place was dirty and with a dog odour and the queue for the bar was unacceptable partly due to lack of staff. There is no table service when you order food. A bit annoying if you are seated upstairs. We waited ages for the luke warm food to arrive brought to us by the most hapless, inattentive waiter you could get. There was a dog barking throughout the entire meal and having paid over £170 for a set Mother’s Day menu, we feel shortchanged. Would I go back or recommend to others? Absolutely not!

Came for Mother's Day Sunday dinner, the toast dinners weren't hot, roast potatoes were stale and reheated and the green beans had been shown to the hot water so were far too hard to eat. We'd asked for a side salad to go with scampi and chips and it came with limp lettuce and covered in balsamic vinegar. We asked for a fresh one without the balsamic and the next one came covered in salt and swimming in oil, defeats the object of a fresh side salad!! There were only 2 desserts left but no one had told us when the dessert menu was given to us and then our order wasn't taken correctly. It seemed there were only three front of house staff who in the main, were quite busy and but they could have done with more assistance and some sort of management. What a shame as this restaurant/pub looks like it could be a little gem!

They informed us that the chef had broken down and would not be in until 6pm, when we had booked a table for 10 at 12:30. They did not ring to inform us and we travelled one hour to get there and we're hungry. We also had to preorder all our food when we booked our table, even without ordering from the Christmas menu. They offered us a round of drinks on the house for the inconvenience, but I am disappointed that they did not inform us sooner. Booked a table for 1:00pm Sunday lunch. Took ages to get seated. Not many vegetarian options was the only downside. Also things on the menu that were vegetarian weren’t even available which was a shame. Then our food did not arrive until 2:30!!! The staff came over once and said ‘five mins, just plating up’ after about an hour, but it turned out that was for the table next to us and ours took another 20 mins to arrive. We were so disappointed. The only saving grace was that the food was lovely when it finally came. When it came to paying, the staff offered us discount for the wait and explained it was due to the fact there was no chef, however if we were told prior to ordering, we would have then known to leave. So where do I start… Booked a table for 8 at 7.30pm. So many things on the menus were not available which was actually started to get funny as pretty much everything we asked for initially wasn’t available. In the end we all managed to order something. The food actually wasn’t bad at all. We were then asked at about 8.30 if we would like to order dessert which we all did. Bearing in mind half the mains menu wasn’t available we suggested he found out what wasn’t available on the sweet menus before we ordered. He came back saying everything was available so we all ordered. 10 mins after ordering the lad came back and said the kitchen was closed and we could have no desserts!!! We were then told that as we had a child with us that we had to leave by 9pm. This was a few mins before 9pm. Bear in mind we had booked a table in the restaurant not a pub or bar so the 9pm law is irrelevant. We explained this and also politely let them know that we were not going anywhere until we had finished our drinks that we had paid for. So then the manageress with the blonde hair turns up and gets really moody and asks us to leave reiterating that it’s the law as we have a child with us. Clearly she wanted to go home. This girl has clearly no idea of what good customer service is. The other staff were embarrassed by the way she spoke to us. Then from the other side of the room a lovely lady who overheard the conversation told the manageress that the Nelson was once the best place to eat and drink in Oakham and that it’s been ruined but the current owners/group and the only reason she and her husband went there in that night was to watch the rugby as they knew it would be quiet. She went on to say that she could not believe the waiter took out order off us and 10 mins later said the kitchen was closed. The local lady then said she was embarrassed that us out of town visitors had experienced this and suggested we should have gone to the wheatsheaf instead. Just in case the owners read this. The lad with the curly hair was very pleasant, as was the slim girl with dark brown hair. The blonde manageress needs to be replaced.

Complete contrast between visits. Visited last Tuesday and the food was great. Really happy. Returned this evening (Tuesday 18:30) we booked a table as Im in a cast and cannot get upstairs. It was confirmed we would have a table reserved. We arrived no booking has been made. Thankfully there were tables free to sit at. The service was really slow. It took 40 minutes for the food to come out. Initially we were told there wasn’t any fish and chips. Then five minutes later they had it. We ordered it with garden peas but when the food arrived there was mushy peas and we were told they had ran out. The fried egg on the gammon egg and chips was burn to a crisp. The mash potato was flavourless worth the bangers and mash. My mum ordered a Belvoir sparkling elderflower and it was flat and we were only charged £1 (completely different price on the menu) it almost seemed to be elderflower cordial mixed with water. The barman assured us this was the Belvoir. There was a mix up with the bill and we were initially charged for additional items the table next to us had. The price for three mains and four drinks was reasonable. However we did not feel it was up to the standard we usually receive at the Nelson. We have returned to The Nelson multiple times in the 8 years we have lived here. But this is the first time we have been disappointed. With such a contrast from our visit last week we hope it’s just a few teething issues.

Great pub that is tucked into the corner of the Oakham market place that is a real tardis. There are rooms off the bar downstairs and upstairs if you want a quiet beer, or if the weather is good you can sit outside in the beer garden, that has another access to Burley Road. We didn't eat so can't comment, but the pizzas that passed by looked and smelt really good. The staff were very friendly and efficient when serving.

The pub has changed hands and is now, alas, not what it was. Still beautiful architecturually however. Suggest you pop in for a drink or two and then eat elsewhere.

We stopped in for lunch on market day, the food was lovely, it all tasted homemade from quality ingredients. The staff were friendly and couldn't do enough. Very nice to have dinner in the courtyard there. We spent £50 on 3 meals and 3 drinks.

We stopped in for lunch and were not disappounted. The staff were all super friendly and the food was really good. Homemade wood fired pizza and good burgers with all the trimmings. Will definitely be going back to try the rest of the menu.

Great pub for some drinks and a meal with friends. Booked and visited on a Sunday. Really enjoyed the food and drinks. There was six of us and three dogs and we were in a room on our own. Excellent service by the staff. The menu had a good choice of dishes including home made pizzas. Would definitely visit again.

Absolutely awful. Incredibly sad to see how a change in ownership can ruin a pub. The food (the stuff they still actually had in stock) was terrible. We waited for a long long time for any of it to arrive - after they changed our order three times having realised they didn’t have in the things we ordered My wife then got food poisoning. Avoid like the plague

Absolutely shocking experience here today. 6 of us turned up for a table we’d reserved. Ordered food. Two roast beef dinners came out. But we were waiting at least 20 minutes for some more meals to come out. The final meal came out about 30 minutes after the first meal had been bought out. Reason given was that they had run out of chicken and had to cook some more. They didn’t even come out and explain this and offer an alternative. The food was literally one of the worst Sunday roasts we’ve ever had. Burnt Yorkshire puddings. Gravy like water. Most of the vegetables were hard. Definitely not worth the £13 for each main. We asked for a refund on the final meal that came out last which was refunded for us. We didn’t bother ordering a pudding and just went elsewhere for a pudding. The venue itself is really nice and full of character. But not good enough for us to want to return here unfortunately.

Popped in on Saturday 19th October for a lovely family meal for myself, wife and 6 yr old daughter. The menu was vast and would suit both young and old. They also has a lovely selection for our 6 yr old daughter with prices suited for all budgets. But what really made our visit was our server Carys. She was so friendly, attentive and made a fuss over our daughter. Having visited several places to eat around Rutland over the past few years I would rate Carys as our best server we’ve had for a very long while. Old Buttercross defiantly need to keep hold of her and she definitely made our visit enjoyable, thank you so much ❤️❤️

Friendly, local business is one thing. Best pizza around is another. I would add more stars if I could. Pizza with proper toppings and the perfect amount of crispiness.

One main meal forgotten and then not delivered. Mistake made on burger, also not rectified. Gutted as spent a lot there but clearly customer complaints are not listened to. Basically ripped off. Disgrace.
