Only disposible cups used, which just end up blowing around outside and making a mess. Supremely wasteful and unnecessary. A real shame that an establishment in such a nice setting is so environmentally unfriendly.

A destination or a stop along the riverbank walk within Lagan Valley Regional Park. Several ways to walk there and one direct route for drivers. Takes a little bit of finding for a first visit but worth the small effort. It is a well-known and favourite local destination, well worth seeking out, offering great coffee and a selection of teas and soft drinks. There are tasty menu options: fresh scones, sandwiches and irresistible tray-bakes, also brunch items. Share outside benches and craic with the dog walkers or sit inside, in a fresh modern interior. Good loos! It has a regular clientele of walkers and dog walkers, with a carpark for the non-active (accessed from the Ring Road traffic lights, then pass the hotel and rugby club). Park at Shaws Bridge and enjoy a walk along the riverbank, sufficient to justify but not work off that traybake? Check out Regional Park website for longer walks that include a stop at the Lock-keepers Inn

Walked tow path on Sun 20th Aug and arrived at lockkeepers cottage at 5.10pm. There were several people sitting at outside tables and drinks still on tables. Door of cafe open, girl inside door cleaning, that totally ignored me. Male in black t shirt behind counter grunted "were closed, sorry" All we wanted was 2 cold drinks to takeaway. It wouldn't have been much to do that. There was no clearly visible opening times on path we took into cafe. Hopefully their buisness is so good that they can treat potential customers like that. A simple sale that would take 20seconds has 100% lost any potential return and gained you this review. Such unwelcoming attitude does not deserve buisness. Ridiculous to be closed so early in summer months anyway

Rude and grumpy staff were the order of the day today at this establishment. At 3.57pm, my elderly Mum was refused a coffee of any sort, (even a takeaway one) at the same time being abruptly informed that the cafe closed at 4pm- which was in fact three minutes later. It is nonsensical anyway to close at this time on a sunny, summer day when walkers and cyclists are clearly wanting to buy a drink. A sour-looking young man then said to the member of staff (young lady) beside him at the counter, “You see, I told you so”. This was said in front of Mum, implying there’s always a late one (even though she was actually not late). How rude. Out of the four members of staff I set eyes on, not one had a welcoming look on their face. What a sour-faced bunch. And as for the arrogant young man who had a real attitude about opening the door for me after I nipped to the bathroom, get a life.

After quite a while promising myself to pay a visit, I eventually did. I only had an Americano and my wife had a Latté and tray bake, she seemed quite happy with what she got but I thought the Americano rather lacking in the depth of flavour I'd come to expect from a double shot Americano in fact it was a rather indifferent cup of coffee and certainly not worth the £2.90 price tag. I'm a coffee freak so my review is completely subjective. I won't go back. I can imagine that during the nicer weather this place could be quite a pleasant place to stop off at but they need to do something about that coffee

Coffee and tea were great but I was horrified to see that all food and drink were served in/on plastic non-recycled containers. There were 3 large black bins all full to the brim with containers. Surely, at £3 for a coffee, the proprietors could consider using recyclable materials. This is a lovely setting but I will not return unless some effort to recycle is made :(

Have visited here many times for a coffee and scone after a run along the tow path and it has always been good. Yesterday, however, the scone (which was first class) was served with margarine which tasted like baking margarine and I’m glad I tasted it before I put it on my scone as I it would have made the scone inedible. I asked could we have real butter and the server (pleasantly) advised that they didn’t have any butter and unfortunately that’s all they had. If this was a one off because the butter had run out, then that’s understandable but if baking margarine is now being served with the scones, I would suggest you revert to serving butter. The margarine cheapens your product, spoils your very good scones and gives the impression that shortcuts are being made. My intention is to provide valuable feedback which I hope you will take on board. Your iced lattes were very good! The 3 stars reflect our experience yesterday .

I took family friends there yesterday when it was busy. Fortunately there was one table feee outside. The young lady at the counter was friendly, courteous and helpful as it was between morning menu and the start of lunch. She explained that, even though it was before 12.00, she would take our lunch ordeal see. The sandwiches and wraps were delightfully prepared and presented with care. The taste was full of flavour and subtle palate enticing ingredients. The price, too, was modest compared to the over-priced nonsense in most mediocre establishments downtown. Fantastic. Enjoyable. Without fuss. Well done to the owner and his staff. So last?”, I have found an estery worthy of my time to comment.

Not a bad thing you can say about the place really, lovely coffee, great staff and service as well as being situated amongst trees with the sounds of birds and the river flowing near by, plus it’s completely dog friendly BUT... the icing on the cake for me was, well more the filling in the sandwich, a superb sandwich, a scrumptious sandwich,-chicken tikka if I remember correctly with a side of crisps and fresh salad, enjoyed at a picnic table on a quiet Tuesday afternoon. We took the dog for a good walk around Barnett's Demesne on the St Paddy's public holiday and followed up with some lunch at the Lock-Keepers Cottage on the tow path; a busy spot as it turned out. The weather was very mixed with heavy showers that hampered the ordering process a little as the queue was out the door. Whilst some tables had awnings so you could continue to eat outside with your dog on a lead beside you, the majority of tables didn't have protection so you were swamped by other customers taking shelter.

Es un poco más caro que una cafetería normal, pero la comida y el café siempre han sido buenos. Some interesting reviews here...I suppose it's about picking the right place for whatever you are looking for ...I go here for two reasons ... 1. I can sit outside with like minded dog walkers and the dogs can socialise , get water etc. and 2. I can also get the coffee to go and continue my walk.Normally I'm either here for breakfast on my own or else coffee and a scone/ traybake if meeting friends. Service has always been good (albeit its normally between 9am - 11am on a Saturday so not too busy this time of year) , the food fine albeit not massively exciting. The breakfast bap is bacon, egg, sausage, fresh bread ...simple but effective after a long walk. Perfectly acceptable spot to stop off on your stomp along the Lagan towpath.

Great location and lovely place to stop for a bite during a long walk. However, the food is average and they always seem to run out of most of the items on the menu. Service was friendly though.

I love this place, i love everything about it. Everyday I try to visit it for a relaxing coffee whilst baby sleeps. It's a beautiful walk from the car park to the inn where I can enjoy the fresh air and scenery and look forward to having my coffee. Every day I know what to expect and I look forward to it, I look forward to seeing the dogs waiting for their owners, to the warm crispy croissants I order and the very polite and friendly staff. I have included visiting this place as a mum as part of my daily routine and feel it really helps keep me positive for my crazy day ahead.

I have been here several times and never get what I ordered within a reasonable time. The staff are clueless students and there is no apparent system for serving customers efficiently. On a busy day like today I waited 30 mins for a cup of coffee that didn't arrive. No one knows when your order might be ready nor do they warn you how long it might be. That combined with the manager serving his friends ahead of other people including me has spurred me to write this review. Avoid on busy days such which is pretty much the only time you would find yourself there. Very disappointing experience.

After a dog walk we stopped here for lunch and it was very tasty. It has a lovely setting and even provides water for the doggies. A little on the expensive side though.

Had a nice lunch here. Very nice surroundings, and friendly staff. As it was quite cold outside, the restaurant was very busy, so finding a seat can be a problem.

Lovely spot and great environment to explore. Staff friendly and working hard in a confined space. Prices a little high would be my only criticism and lost a point for that. Good quality food must be said and freshly prepared in a very small place. Seemed very popular on a cold Saturday afternoon.

We arrived at 1145 and checked the board , I asked about the pie of the day and was told "you can't have food now, that's not available until 12 and you can't order until then it's the lunch menu" I was a little shocked by her curtness. I looked around to see what would be available and noticed a breakfast menu. On seeing that I'd noticed it the she said " oh you can have breakfast but only until 12. We ordered tea and a cake to keep us going until we decided what to have and were given a number whilst they prepared it. My friend decided on focaccia with goats cheese and salad from the lunch menu and I wanted the French toast with bacon and maple syrup from the breakfast menu . My friend asked to place the order at 1156 thinking if I can give both orders and they can decide how and when to serve.,The girl was aghast and explained they were from the BREAKFAST & LUNCH menu but she would try "the chefs very fussy about the orders" when asked if he could serve he said "I'll do it this once but not again" . Sitting back down our cake arrived with our food in quick pursuit so it's not as if they were snowed under. I won't be back but if you decide to go be careful when you order the chefs very fussy!

Great location and great food. Well worth a visit. Will definitely be visiting again. Staff do a great job considering how busy they are and such a small place.

I have eaten here many times and the food is fine. The service is good too.Last Wednesday after soup and a sandwich I decided to have a cup of coffee with my friend. The coffee was very poor and for £4.60 a complete rip off, I will be back for food butNever for coffee!!!

If you are visiting Belfast and want a delightful spot to have breakfast or just a coffee and a delicious cake, then this is the spot. You can also walk off the calories either before or after your visit. We opted to get some sustenance before we started our walk along the tow path beside the canal heading towards Stranmillis. The walk takes about an hour and the scenery is idyllic. But brunch preceded the walk and it was delicious. I had french toast with bacon and real maple syrup (loads of it as well) and my companion had the breakfast muffin. Both options were beautifully cooked and arrived piping hot. The coffee was good and strong! The staff were friendly and the service was fast and efficient. All the food here is freshly prepared and they seem to use really high quality local ingredients. It's not my first time to come to the Lock Keeper's Cafe and it won't be my last!!!

Excellent quiche for lunch probably the best I’ve tasted. Homemade. Great chips and a nice pot of tea. Friendly service too. I go fairly regularly

Called to get book for my grandson and few gifts and of course the much needed coffee. The shop is always immaculate as should be. Husband got boots at reduced cost. Pleasure to visit this centre, lovely staff.

Pay a visit for the scones alone!! Best raspberry and white chocolate scone in Belfast. I’ve asked the lovely dark haired girl for the recipe every Friday morning, but she remains tight lipped! Scone and a generous pot of tea for under £4…a steal!

Popped in to buy a take away scone When I opened it up the scone wasn’t much deeper than a pancake and felt and tasted very dry and stale I had chosen a fruit scone and all the fruit was distributed round edges leaving the middle completely fruit free. The edges were also overcooked The scone sadly was not enjoyable to eat. Not sure I’d be buying a scone from here again Bit disappointed Perhaps not a freshly baked scone?? Their tray-bakes on the other hand are usually exceptional

Went for lunch with my wife and son. Staff were super attentive upon arrival and seated within minutes. Drinks ordered and order placed all within 5-10 minutes of being seated. The wife went for the special which was salted chili bites with skin on skinny fries and side salad, son had sausages and chips and I had bacon, brie and red onion marmalade panini with skinny fries coleslaw and side salad. Picture below. Overall total was around £30 which wasn't too bad for two big plates of lunch and coke zero and child's lunch. Highly would recommend The Secret Garden to anyone looking for a high quality meal in the Dundonald area.
