The Lobster Pot in Weymouth and Portland

We arrived somewhat soggy today after an unexpected, and foolishly coatless, downpour. The staff could not have been more accommodating, despite our dripping in their very busy restaurant, offering us tea towels to dry off, turning on the heating and checking we were ok regularly. The cream tea was absolutely delicious, and the gluten free menu was wonderful and so inclusive. A very welcome and tasty treat indeed.

A lovely place, friendly staff and beautiful views. Sadly, I found the food to be massively over priced; a small portion of chips costing over £5 is fine. However, these were undercooked. The Hallumi fries being £8+ a portion I expected more than 6odd sticks. The salad surrounding it was rather old looking too. A disappointment... But was clean and satisfactory; no sickness and filled the hunger after my 9mile hike.

Really busy, buzzing atmosphere on a Bank Holiday lunch time, yet the staff were friendly, efficient and helpful. We were late for our booking because of traffic issues but were seated within minutes. Fish lunches were the best quality, presentation and size. Compliments to the whole team, a pleasant experience which we will repeat soon!

Service was ok. We had salmon with chips, tea and shrimps with tails. Salmon and tea were great! Shrimps were just cheap small battered things which did not look / taste like shrimps🍤 and I asked precisely about it. The counter didn’t tell me the truth. So minus 2 stars for food itself and minus 1 star for the service. The sea-view was worthy for takeaway. Even windy weather didn’t spoil ours mood. So 5 🌟the atmosphere or better surroundings 😍 And they didn’t have a crab. Definitely the must change their trade name! ☝️

Rather expensive for two teas and cake (£15). Grumpy staff at the takeaway, not a good experience. Won’t be using them again

This cafe is next to the lighthouse and worthy of a stop because it is right next to the sea cliff. We tried to get inside but it was full, so we resided ourselves to the benches outside. The service was quick, the coffees ok and the crab sandwich excellent.

Lovely traditional afternoon tea. On exploring the area and looking at the beautiful views and stunning lighthouse. We went into the lobster pot for an afternoon tea. The tea room was packed out. A testament to the quality. Customers were happy to wait for a table. Queuing out the door. We had 5 in our party and a large dog to accommodate. The staff quickly were able to turn tables around to get us sat in the designated dog friendly tables to the edge of the room. We all had tea and homemade scones, with one member of our party also having some savoury items. Service was fantastic, great enthusiasm by the young waitress who severed us. At points in our visit she seemed a little bit over whelmed by how busy it was. But she composed herself beautifully and she gave us 5 star customer service. The host was also very nice, attentive, bubbly and engaging. The team deserves huge credit for great customer service and quality of product. A very enjoyable afternoon and I will be revisiting the area in the summer with this near the top of my list to try again.

I am a local and a resident of Portland so am lucky to have this place on my doorstep. I visited today with my family visitors and told them it might be too busy as is Easter Saturday! It was busy but a table became available quickly and a delightful member of staff quickly took our order, which was memorised accurately, arrived in a blink and was delicious. I would like to wish all of the staff members, who contribute to making every visit to The Lobster Pot absolutely perfect, a very Happy Easter!

Warmest of welcomes from owner/manageress (?) Very helpful waitress - with arranging children, choosing foods, giving us time to think. Quick delivery of drinks and food. Lovely quality and good portions of all our meals. Couldn’t ask for more.

£5.95 for chips that turned out to be a container of potato scraps and grease. Clearly the staff were happy to serve this rubbish up to my grandson who luckily decided just to buy one lot instead ot the two we thought he was getting - he saw the price. Overall the snack bar was overpriced but the lady who served him was pleasant. Take a picnic !

Really expensive and now the only place around that area to get food and drink. I had a lovely cream tea but they don't offer non fruit scones.

Called in today on a cold windy day for a quick snack. We had the cream tea and have to say it was one of the nicest we’ve ever had, a lovely warm home made fruit scone and proper tea with tea leaves. The staff were lovely and friendly, the food being served around us looked good too, would definitely go back if we were visiting again.

We walked into this restaurant on a busy Saturday during the school half-term without a reservation, with a family of five, including a 6-year-old and nine-month-old twins in a buggy. Despite the rush, the staff were incredibly welcoming and efficient, accommodating us with a spacious table that had ample room for the buggy. A special mention goes to the lady in the green jumper, who I believe was the floor manager, her professionalism and care stood out. Kudos to her and the team! The food was freshly cooked, flavorful, and delicious. While a bit on the pricier side, the ambiance and stunning views made it well worth the cost. A must-visit restaurant if you're in Portland!

Amazing place to eat wonderful food with a fantastic view

Popped into the Lobster Pot this morning, and we both had a full English breakfast and a coffee each. The staff were ever so nice and welcoming, and the breakfast and coffees were great. Highly recommend a visit whilst at Portland Bill.

You simply must go if visiting Dorset! A very special place in a secluded spot right on the edge of the coast, with breathtaking views 🤩 Food is top notch and staff + shop are just wonderful 🤗

The Dorset apple cake was very good and the teas come with extra hot water so are good value. Lovely sea views.

Visited on a very atmospheric March afternoon. Quite bustling, despite the weather and managed to get one of the window seats which is obviously one of the main attractions of the place. I had hoped for more goujons (I was told 4, but only 3 arrived) but they were tasty as was the tartare sauce. The coffee was pretty strong (a good thing!). Would rate 3.5/5. It has a kind of canteen-esc vibe and can well imagine it being PACKED in summer. Would like to come back again after a blustery coastal walk and make the most of their winter warmer specials and cosying up by the window overlooking the sea.

Great service, friendly, super quick. Evéyone had a smile on their face. Will certainly visit again.

What an amazing place. Stopped by on my hike around the Isle of Portland. Sit by the window for an ocean view. Haddock & Chips with peas and a big pot of tea came to £19.05. Service was great. Was hoping for a bit more local seafood on the specials board but maybe it wasn’t the season.

We had a lovely lunch. Food was very tasty. Staff extremely friendly and attentive. If you can get a window table, the views are fantastic.

Fabulous view. Clean and friendly cafe. Visited during the day. Massive scone with lashings of jam and clotted cream, huge slices of Dorset apple cake with clotted cream. Another visit today, February 2025, was just not the same standard. the fruit scone was definitely not fresh and played hunt the fruit. It's still a great location.

A lovely place. How busy it was on a Sunday in February says a lot. Service was absolutely excellent, food was delicious and it was obviously extremely well run.

Couldn’t wish for a better location. The staff are amazing, taking orders without writing anything down. Top quality food, good presentation, great service and well worth the wait. Not rushed to vacate the table. Advisable to book a table. Window seat cannot be guaranteed. The shop and cafe was buzzing with customers chatting and eating their food. Bring it on.

Surprisingly better than I had recalled from previous visits. Nice pleasant attentive service and goes without saying how amazing the views are. Locals tell me it's insane in the summer but in winter it's very decent. A couple of vegan options, that could improve as there is little actually marked as such apart from a vgn lasagne. Still would return

Consistently nice food at reasonable prices at a beautiful location

Went inside to get a bite to eat...lady was a bit rude and said we should order from the outside window. I dont know ehy since the place was empty...this was 9.30 on a weekday morning. We ordered two hot chocolates and two sausage sandwiches to take away from their 'hatch' ...but they were served to us on ceramic so we had to sit outside and consume them rather than returning to our car as planned. Food and drink was OK but nothing special..just have no competition because of the location.

I had low expectations when I first saw The Lobster Pot...but I was completely wrong. The ordering/collection window system outside was very efficient, with friendly, fast staff. The food came quickly and of a high quality and good portions. Thanks to all the staff there - keep on doing what you're doing!!!

Great prawn mayo sandwich and Dorset Apple Cake, with a great view. Highly recommend the prawn mayo sandwich.

We had cream tea each time, once we had hot chocolate instead of tea.

The Lobster Pot is one of my favourite places to eat and has I have never left disappointed. The view is incredible and worth the trip by itself, the food is delicious, but the staff are what makes the Lobster Pot special. The vegetarian and vegan menus are really thoughtful. Highly recommend anything with chips, crab salad, ham salad, Dorset apple cake and the cream tea. I’ve never been offered such a generous portion of clotted cream and the warmed scones are perfection. If I could give ten stars out of five, I would.

We were Greeted with a warm friendly smile and seated quickly.Our server was charming being super attentive for my elderly mother’s off menu request. Great location with great views of Portland Lighthouse & Fishing Village & the Sea. We had Full English Breakfast, which was a tad greasy but otherwise nice. Staff were really friendly & a great service. We can highly recommend this restaurant.

We have a lovely late lunch of the cheese medley sandwich and fries after walking the cliffs for a couple of hours. The staff are really friendly and the food was delicious. I had a tea which was leaf tea…. Not had leaf tea in years. Lovely!

Beautiful setting and friendly staff but the food isn’t what it used to be and prices are ridiculous for some things. Fish goujons (3) over cooked, chips were basic skinny fries end of bag as they were shards - v small portion and a salad- £14.50! Crab sandwich nice but bread just bog standard seeded sliced with a couple of salad leaves. Crab salad bowl was £25 so left that! Shame.

Many overly good reviews, we were not convinced. Fresh crab sandwich is good but, like almost everything, overpriced. Fish gajouns tasted more like old frying fat than fish. Burger was mediocre. Side salads were without dressing, not even available in self service. Sitting outside in the sunshine = 5 stars for the view... Better to bring a picnic.

Visited the LP lunchtime on 16 Sep. Placed order for 2 x baguettes, dine in, at 1255. By 1335, still no food served. Admittedly, it was quite busy, but to have to wait more than 40 minutes for 2 glorified sandwiches, is frankly ridiculous. Result? Won't be using LP again.

Solid 5 stars. Excellent quality food, we had Haddock and Chips which were amazing and a full English the next morning. The fish and chips are great the fish just flakes and the chips tastes amazing, as did the full English, nice thick bacon, good sausages and nicely cooked beans, mushrooms and hash browns. Solid 5 stars and nice pleasant service by all who served us. Well deserved tip at the end.

Stopped for a light bite, husband had the crab sandwich and I had the Leek & Potato soup. Both were amazing and tge best we had tasted. 💯 recommend

We visited on Friday 6th September for afternoon, fantastic value for money, everything was fresh and tasted amazing and the service was great.

Lovely little find, the cream tea is divine, scones absolutely delicious, highly recommended.

Disappointed this time, they seem to have changed the quality of the sandwiches. We have been coming here for years and it seems that they have made the sandwiches not quite as special as previously. The bread was not the same, the fillings not as good. The biggest difference is that they have stopped putting crisps as a garnish, sounds daft but it was their signature and we weren’t the only ones to comment. Standards are slipping which is a shame.

We were there for breakfast. It tasted great and special requests were easily accommodated by the very nice waitress. The prices were cheap and the view is magnificent.

ncredible place the Lobster 🦞 Pot. Fresh food ,love the fresh crab, prawn sandwiches. Roast dinners best I've ever had, daily specials, amazing deserts 🏜. Service is excellent and if you can get window view even better. Live on the island always take my family there. Prices are at the high end, but you get what you pay for, 10/10. Added gift shop and pletty of setting outside. Cream teas are amazing, plus there whippy ice cream. The only real shame parking is £3 a hr, £4.50 for 2hrs. This right next to Portland Bill lighthouse

Good service and even better food. We stopped halfway along our walk around Portland, for lunch, and very much enjoyed our meal. We had a dog with us which was accommodated well - we were told they always wait for a table on the outside for dogs, which we felt was reasonable and we would have preferred that anyway, thinking that our dog wouldn't have settled if she'd been in the centre of the restaurant. We ordered the chicken burger, the haddock and chips, the salmon fillet, and the halloumi burger. We chose sides of either chips and salad. The chips were cooked to perfection, portion sizes were generous. The battered haddock particularly so - it came with 2 pieces of fish, and the chicken burger with 2 pieces of fried chicken. All the food was excellent. For dessert, we had chocolate fudge cake, ice cream sundae, sticky toffee pudding, toffee and honeycomb cheesecake (a special), and Dorset apple cake, all of which were delicious. Overall highly recommended, with excellent food and service, with 3/5 given for atmosphere due to the slightly chilly air conditioning and the loud environment due to lots of hard surfaces. The floor was also quite dirty with food.

THE LOBSTER POT @ PORTLAND BILL great walk today with refreshments at The Lobster Pot, which is a brilliant family run sit down restaurant / or takeaway stop right at the end of Portland Bill just next to the Lighthouse. PARKING is super easy with public toilets as well at what3words states.edit.skylights (about £2/hr). From here you can walk the South West Coast Path for as long as you want to - dogs best on leads due to proximity to cliff edge. THE VIEWS from the cliff top are stunning even on windy days, returning back to the Lobster Pot for either a grateful drink or bite to eat is always a pleasure. Great attentive service, bright and clean with great pawn and crab salads and a 'specials board' to sample. Plenty of out door benches if you fancy eating outside too.

Wow crab 🦀 sandwiches where amazing to be honest expected it to be a tourist trap but it was amazing staff so lovely food was amazing.

I was recommended to try their crab sandwich and it was absolutely excellent !

Had a cracking cream tea here featuring home made scones and a generous helping of clotted cream. We then went exploring for a couple of hours before returning to the Lobster Pot for a crab sandwich. Good prices and very clean, too. Awesome! Worth the journey to Portland Bill just for the Lobster Pot.

Fancied going to Weymouth/Portland Bill. Once a year I try and source a Crab sandwich - so I researched a little and it suggested The Lobster Pot was the best. I was none the wiser with an inside or outside seat, so we want inside at 12:30 and I waited about 2 mins and got a lovely table for two by the window. I noticed a Special of a Dressed Crab for approx £16. Service/ordering was amazing quick, enthusiastic, and good. I ordered a Dressed Crab and my daughter a Tuna Sandwich & Chips. Food arrived promptly and was delicious, probably best crab ever. If I have am to make an observation my daughter would have preferred a choice of bread, rather than only seaded. However she ate it enjoyed it! Afterwards I noticed the self-service outside was the same price - so we were happy we were inside. The price was not too bad at £16 for a dressed crab, as last week we went to Hengistbury Head and it is £26 there!! We had a walk and then an Ice Cream from the self-service hatch. We were amazed at the prices - a nice proper dense Mr Whippy/99 with one flake for £2.95 or two flakes for £3.15!!!! We had a nice couple of hours at Portland Bill! (We even managed to climb the lighthouse)

Great food, got some good family memories from times here hence why always visit when in the area. They only negative was I'm not keen on dogs and these now seem allowed in the cafe area other than that all was good.
