Booked for 4 people. Rang to ask for menu’s to be emailed. They weren’t. Rang again and got them. Service was friendly enough. I thought the Christmas turkey lunch was bland and the potatoes tasted like smash (for those of you that can remember that) Didn’t offer cranberry sauce, I had to go to ask in the kitchen. Dessert was ok but the baileys and mint cheesecake tasted of mint but no baileys. Coffee was lukewarm and cold mince pies. Very disappointed overall. I think this is the worst meal we have had at the Lion in all the times we have been for lunch/dinner.

My sister booked a birthday party Saturday 10th December for 7 people. We had a lovely welcome and were shown to our table and offered drinks. We had a lovely 3 course meal, beautifully prepared and served with attention to detail with great customer service, attentive and easy going. The food was amazing, the Sea Bass main course presented on a bed of deliciously creamy mashed potato with 2 lovely roasted potatoes and superb range of seasonal vegetables, just enough, not too much! My dessert was the chocolate mousse with fruit pearls, just perfect! Amazing value!! £25ish for a 3 course Christmas meal, (not sure of the exact price as I didn't pay the bill for the food) It ticks a box for me too that it has a Food Hygiene Rating of 5 stars (2/03/20), my business being all about food hygiene! The decor is arty, different, and unconventional, and it works :D

Our group of six buddies decided to treat ourselves to a night away at this delightful hotel and bistro. Four of us had been previously but it was a new experience for my partner and me. We were not disappointed. This wonderful, quirky historical building has been beautifully decorated in the most colourful, imaginative and artistically skilled fashion, it was a joy to be involved. Our meal from the festive menu was superb and the service faultless. Right down to the brilliant evening entertainment from local musicians, we couldn't have been made more welcome or wished for a lovelier time. We also had a gorgeous complimentary breakfast in the morning. We were made to feel very special and will definitely be staying again. I would most certainly recommend this wonderful place to anyone for a visit, not to me missed!

We (my husband, son and myself) often visit the lovely village of Berriew. We have a static caravan near Welshpool. We were spending the week at the caravan to close it down for the end of season. We have dined in the tea shop but have never been in the Lion Hotel. We planned to eat at the tea shop but there were no tables available so on the off chance we called in to the Lion. We were warmly welcomed by the Assistant Manager. We asked for the lunch menu and were shown into the amazing dining room. We chose baked potato with beans and the other with cheese. My husband chose the welsh rarebit. Our drinks were brought promptly to our table and the food followed soon after. The food was excellent and beautifully presented. The chef came out to ask us if the food was okay. When my husband said the Welsh rarebit was the best he had ever tasted she said it was the first time she had cooked it. We would not hesitate to recommed the Lion to anyone looking for somewhere that bit special to eat. The Assistant Manager told us about the Monday Club where 2 courses are available for £10. We will certainly take advantage of this offer if it is still available in March 2023 when we return.

We stayed a week at the Lion - certainly one we won’t forget! The decor is distinctive. The hotel managers and their staff were helpful in the extreme and remarkably friendly and good-humoured, despite staff shortages (a common problem in the hospitality industry at present) and the food was excellent. A great place to stay in a lovely village.

After our car broke down mid journey to our holiday, we found ourselves stranded in Welshpool on a Sunday evening until a garage could help us. We decided to book somewhere to just get us and our 3 year old down for the night while we made a plan. The Lion Hotel was SO welcoming and friendly, our room specified an extra bed for the little one and it surpassed all expectations of a pull out cot bed. Instead we were given a beautiful double room with an adjoining simple single room with its own ensuite! Ideal for us so she could sleep and not be disturbed by our frantic phone calls to towing companies. Breakfast in the morning was delicious with a fabulous selection of cooked items as well as fruits, yoghurts and cereals. We loved finding all the different art works, the decor is so fun and tactile. What could have been an incredibly stressful and disappointing night ended up being a wonderful experience and our daughter loved our mini holiday. Thank you for rescuing our weekend!

After a glorious trip to the Andrew Logan museum we were very excited to visit the Lion for a quick drink before heading home. Unfortunately we were greeted by unhelpful and cold staff who had no interest in welcoming us or even attempting to serve us. Whilst drop ins on a bank holiday are tenuous (and often impossible to satisfy) it was the treatment by the staff that really shocked us and left an unpleasant taste in all our mouths.

when is a Welsh rarebit not a a Welsh rarebit? Simple when the lunchtime chef at this restaurant gets his / her hands on it. Whatever it is I was served in its stead was probably not Welsh rarebit. I say possibly as the slime I had served on toasted muffin was spread so thin I couldn’t really identify it. The dish was so dry I had to get an extra drink to wash it down. For the record I am a classically trained chef and have lived and worked both in South and North Wales so no what I am talking about. I had wanted to try Andy Logan’s Uber chic pub since it opened and to be honest I was totally disappointed in the experience. Even the “ Uber chic” paint job is tacky and dated now showing patches and scratches everywhere. Overall disappointing

Whilst the interior colour scheme is shall we say interesting , the food and especially the service was superb. Portions were on the posh side but take nothing away from the food spot on, the beef was so tender , cauliflower cheese so cheesy and the gravy lush. Just had my second stay at the Lion, a real gem of a hotel & bistro in central Wales. If you’re keen on art, it’s not just a place to sleep and eat, but a destination in itself. Each of the rooms embodies a theme brought to life by Andrew Logan’s artistic vision: ‘fire’, ‘sun’, ‘sky’, and the like. This time I had ‘regal’, a spacious red room featuring a 4 poster bed topped by a huge mirrored crown artwork. The room had a glossy lacquer-like bathroom in royal purple, with a roomy rainforest-type shower. The Lion isn’t just about the art (you can get a full whack of Andrew’s creativity around the corner in his newly refurbished museum). Those objets d’art may glimmer and gleam from most every wall and corner, but it’s also a very comfortable and well-kitted out hotel. The bistro’s fare is of a very high standard (had a succulent lamb shank & mash, and a friend raved about the fish & chips) and service is excellent in both the restaurant and the bar, which have both been updated to help socially distance different dining parties. Very highly recommended!

If you have visited the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture your next stop has to be the refurbished Lion Hotel, not only to continue the discovery of Andrew Logan’s colourful world, but to also to eat yummy food. And likewise it you went to the Lion Hotel and want to see more the museum is round the corner. The Lion has a really good menu with pub classics and extra surprises - all beautifully cooked and presented. My only criticism would be I couldn’t finish the starter of whitebait - delicious but huge and I wanted to leave room for the rest. The other dishes were all really good: pate with pear chutney, chicken with tarragon and the puddings: coffee crème brulee and summer pudding, yum.Service was excellent they were all very charming and efficient. Thank you all for 2 lovely dinners.

Over the last couple of years the Lion has become a real jewel at the centre of the village. The menu, which changes with the seasons, is excellent and Lee and his staff always give a warm welcome. Outside it’s a very traditional-looking black and white pub with a beautiful cottage-style garden. The surprise comes when you cross the threshold into the bar, bistro and restaurant which have been transformed with bold colour and the art of local sculptor Andrew Logan into a quirky and stylish setting, full of interesting things to look at. There is often artwork on display for purchase and lots of live music events which pack the pub. If you’re in the area it’s well worth a visit. We locals love it!

We had been recommended the Lion Hotel and Bistro by a friend who had visited several times, so we booked afternoon tea for five of us to treat some friends. We were greeted warmly, seated in a lovely, vibrantly decorated room and served with a declicious afternoon tea. The staff are friendly, helpful and professional, and nicely attentive but not intrusive The afternoon tea comprised of sandwiches, scone with clotted cream and jam, mini apple crumble, and a perfectly cooked chocolate brownie. The portion sizes were spot on, and the tea/coffee topped up regularly. We will definitely return for lunch and dinner. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area visiting Welshpool or Newtown, of even just passing through on the way to the coast.

This is a special place to stay, and I suspect one Sunday supplement review away from being impossible to be able to book in - so BOOK NOW! The Lion is a lovely old pub and the rooms are not only hugely comfortable but also unique having been designed and fitted out by Andrew Logan. When you see a glass mosaic number on your door and find a throne in your room you know it's worth the effort getting here. I say worth the effort because this was a weekend of massive floods with the Welshpool to Newtown road blocked and everyone having to rearrange their accommodation and travel plans. The food in the restaurant is excellent and the restaurant itself is worth the visit on it's own. Really glad to see that their is still a bar which was full of both residents and locals with live music. The service was excellent too.

While staying with good friends in Montgomery, they took us to The Lion. Wow! This, is not your ordinary 'Olde World Inn'. This, is The Lion 'experience. We ordered in the bar, a bar meal. The charming lady attending to us said it would be served in the dining room, taking us to our stylish table when ready. What a treat! Beautifully presented, delicious, fresh food. (The full menu makes another visit necessary.) But, it is the fabulous decor - the use of strong, bold colour, themed meticulously through table settings; original paintings and arresting mirrored wall hangings, ready to reveal more detail on future visits - which engage, uplift and enchant. We voiced our delight to Lee and were rewarded with a viewing of the electrifying, refurbished rooms, with 'state of the art' en suits. To be included in such a creative piece of art is a privilege. What a fantastic evening at The Lion on Friday night, food was so tasty, who would of thought sprout puree would be a winner! It certainly was accompanied by the generous helping of Turkey cooked to perfection and the tastiest parsnips. The service was excellent by the lovely staff, so welcoming and attentive and the atmosphere just buzzing. We will be back all 24 of us! Thank you for a lovely evening and a great start to the New Year.

Following the refurbishment by the new owners combined with positive comments from others who have visited, we decided to have a meal to see for ourselves. The building and decor are stunning, but unfortunately the meal did not have the same level of quality. Both our starters and one of the main courses were pleasant, but the lamb was very poor. The roast potatoes were soft, the ‘jus’ was more like a ladle of gravy, while the lamb included a very large lump of soft fat which was very unpleasant. We followed with Christmas pudding and brandy/rum sauce which again was a let down. Instead of being rich and full of flavour, both were very bland while the sauce was more like a thin milky liquid with no richness or depth.

We knew The Lion had recently been done up and was under new management so wanted to try it out for ourselves, especially as we love reasonably locally and have heard several good stories about it.

We met friends here today for Sunday lunch. The style and decoration is fabulous, perhaps a little quirky, big bold colours and wonderful glass mirrors, but it all works! Lee and his staff are extremely friendly, and there are few places locally where dogs are given such a warm welcome. The service and food was excellent. We will definitely be returning, and recommending to all our friends.

This place has gone through some bad times over the last few years. Now in private ownership the transformation is outstanding both in terms of decor in and out, with great food and lovely staff. I am a regular visitor now and recommend you visit.

We booked the lion for a group of 15 of us. Lee and his team were extremely accommodating. We had a private room to ourselves which suited the children. The roast dinner was outstanding, great wine and a good selection of gins available. The decor and blend of old and new works very well! A great venue for any occasion. Your guaranteed a warm welcome and for that we will return time after time.

We had visited The Lion on two previous occasions, before it was taken over, and restored to a condition it had deserved for a number of years. We booked a 3 night stay in September, and on entering this old half timbered building we were amazed at the many changes made to the place. The manager Lee met us in the bar, and carried our luggage up to our room. Lee was always there when we needed help, very friendly etc as are all the staff. Meals were top class, delicious, and very fairly priced. It was a totally all round "brilliant" experience, which we hope to repeat soon.

To date I have only had a drink at the Lion, but the times I have gone there, I have been so impressed. Lee (General Manager) has put his heart and soul into making this newly renovated pub a success. He and his staff are the perfect hosts who go above and beyond to make your visit a memorable one.

What a transformation after being taken over by the new owners Andrew and Michael. The restaurant is cosy, in very bright blue, with some of Andrew's art work on the wall .Another room is painted a very warm red, and the bar is a delicate pink, all so different in a 400 year old , beamed building. Lee,the manager and all the staff ,chefs, waiting on staff, bar staff and housekeeping are doing a fantastic job in this newly opened restaurant/bar. Our latest visit, last night along with others in the last few weeks, was superb. 6 of us Had a mixture of food including starters of, chicken pâté, whitebait, cray fish and goats cheese..... all beautiful. This was followed by, steaks, lamb chops, chicken, tuna and cod, all large portions. It was all served quickly, with care and attention to every detail. The wine was really good as well. I don't know how, but we even managed deserts; knickerbocker glory, cheese board and summer pudding...and coffee and brandy and port. We will definitely be back again soon, Should maybe just have the delicious watercress soup and a lettuce leaf! Thank you to Lee and all the staff.

The most delicious lunch - we booked as a family of 7 and sat in the electric blue fabulous restaurant with two incredible pieces of artwork by the revered artist Andrew Logan adorning the walls. A more brightly coloured restaurant (or interior for that matter) you will not find easily. It is a talking point in its own right and a sight to behold, we loved it!

The Lion has just reopened after a fabulous and innovative renovation by the new owners, creating a really exceptional restaurant and bar. We’ve eaten here twice in a week as the food was so good. Top quality ingredients are cooked and presented to a very high standard and served by friendly and professional staff who really know their job. That they have managed to create such a polished product within days of opening is a testament to Lee, the manager. It’s great to see the Lion brought back to life again in such a creative way.

We have been visiting The Drover's for around 25 years. As a full Family initially, now just the two of us. Peter and his Team never disappoint. The welcome is always friendly and we do enjoy a modest pre Lunch drink in the cosy snug out the back. The views of the river are spectacular. It was a bit chilly to be sitting outside on the balcony but one brave chap did take his coffee out there! The food, well, you can't call it 'just Sunday Lunch! It's a foodie treat! Plenty of beautifully cooked food. Always hot and tasty. The quality is certainly there as well. Cannot fault anything and the Sweets are to die for! The atmosphere is invariably pleasant. A good mixture of Walkers, Holiday makers and Locals. Thanks so much for everything over the years Peter. We're already in the process of booking next year's trip to Wales, so keep an eye out for an email soon!

Our first time here this morning. From the minute we walked in we was welcomed and seated. All staff were welcoming. Myself and fiancé ordered a full English, food was lovely not one fault and clear plates. I had a cappuccino which was tasty and perfect. We were approached and asked if everything was okay during our meal. We paid with cash and left a tip as we were very pleased. We will definitely be attending again on our next stay.

Great place to stay. A friend and I cycled to the area and stayed here overnight. The owner is very accommodating and friendly. The room is a generous size with all the facilities you would want, and you have access to an outside deck area with lounge chairs and table which is ideal on a sunny day. The breakfast was also lovely. The location was great as it’s a 5 min walk from 2 good pubs and a post office/shop

Mock timber frame manor house retaining much of its character and charm. No lifts. Breakfast was choose your own pre-packed cereals with a cooked option. Dinner was a mini-taster with delicious options which we watched cooked on TV cameras. The room was clean but dated with an en-suit crammed in. High windows restricted light and views of extensive gardens and river. The staff were friendly and willing but lacked service training. Guests our age do not wish to be called 'you guys'.
