Have been several times always warm welcome and great food. Went today, Sunday for lunch, lovely as always but disappointed that the roast on offer was only chicken or the gammon. The gammon was an option but was on the menu with egg and chips. Having had several ham salads this week in the warm weather, I was looking forward to beef, lamb or pork as my roast. Chicken is the cheap option and therefore made it not quite as special. We eat lots of chicken through the week. For two it’s sometimes not worth cooking a roast. For £16 for the main course I would have expected a better choice, certainly based on my previous visits. The chicken was tasty and good quantity, however just not the same as a nice roasted joint. If returning, would certainly ask ahead what was on the menu if going again for Sunday lunch.

Very rare we leave reviews for places but just wow to this b and b and its owners. Viv and John went over and above for us during our stay. We couldn’t fault anything from the bbq hunters chicken, bread and butter pudding, the love they showed to our GSD, the dog treats, the comfy bed. The list is endless. Viv & John are kind, friendly and have such a lovely warmth about them. We couldn’t recommend a stay here highly enough.

My family and I were invited here for a get-together with relatives. It was my first visit to the White Lion and my impressions were positive from start to finish. Not only was the quality of the food top-notch, but the quantity of it was impressive as well. Nobody in our party had any complaints about anything. I sincerely hope I'll get a chance to return to Wicken and this fine pub in the near future.

A hidden gem and a wonderful example of a dying breed The White Lion offers everything you would expect of a traditional British pub. This is a true local's pub. There was live music on, which was great. The landlady is a lovely, friendly lady, and the young waitress is a lovely girl. We felt that the menu was fairly limited (particularly the lack of vegetarian starters and cold desserts), but the food is cooked fresh and you can see through to the kitchen.

Please don't be deceived by the beer garden with garden toys in it. This pub is strictly NOT child friendly. I joined a couple of friends there for a bank holiday pint and made the mistake of taking my kids with me. John, the landlord, clearly can't be around children. He spat his dummy over our kids playing a little loudly in the garden. To be clear, we had the garden to ourselves and were disturbing nobody (except John, clearly). He announced that he'd already had to "tell them off for riding their bikes in the car park", and that "if I didn't control them they weren't welcome". Don't worry John, we won't darken your door again. Such a shame, because aside from the management, it's a decent village pub.

The White Lion represents my ideal of a country pub. It's cosy and warm with low lighting, a buzz of conversation, rustic but tasteful décor and cheery staff. The beers included two of Cornwall's finest session ales - Doombar and Tribute. As for food, the menu is quite traditional - you might say 'pub grub' but that could give the wrong impression. This is well cooked, fresh and generously proportioned.

This little gem of a pub, out in the countryside of the beautiful, unspoilt little village of Wicken, The White Lion boasts a large bar with a cosy seated area to the far side of it. Also a lounge like area with tables, for pub food and a dining area in which to enjoy dinner from their gastro menu. There are a good range of beers and beverages, and the food, which ranges from pub favourites, like fish and chips, to pies and lamb shanks and the like. Very nicely done and good value for money. The bar area is pet friendly and they have their own very friendly little parakeet tucked in a corner. There's a nostalgic tone to the decor that harps back to old agriculture. Surrounded by farmland and horse fields, I'm sure this is a nod to the history of the surroundings for this charming little pub. There is also a small open fire which is often on in the winter, adding to the cosiness. I have been a few times, and have forgotten to write a review. Though it has changed hands several times over the years I have popped in on occasion, the hospitality of the owners and staff is never disappointing and the food and drink has always been of a very good standard. My recent visit was just as pleasing, and I mean to revisit more often.

Overall still a great place to go. Good pub meals and a great welcome. Biggest problem raised by some other locals lately that have tried to go is a lack of reliability in being able to call in for a meal. Lot of random closures at lunchtime and the kitchen seems to be overcome by large groups a lot of the time meaning even though they are open, they can't serve you. Appears that they need some more staff. A small thing but worth fixing to ensure people don't give up on dropping by.

We had dinner at the White Lion this evening and both our meals were absolutely delicious! The menu changes every month so it is nice to get the chance to try new dishes. I had the duck breast with a port, orange and Cointreau sauce (served in a separate jug) and dauphinois potatoes. The duck breast was perfectly cooked, tender and not 'gamey', and the sauce was delicious, light and not too sweet. The potatoes were gorgeous too! My partner had the slow cooked belly pork - it was so tender it fell apart on the plate and actually tasted just like pork should taste. The menu also includes pub classics but we are pleased we opted for the " dinner party classics" tonight, they were really good!

Photos are of desserts we were offered on the night although there are none of the main course (we were too hungry to think about that)Nothing is too much trouble and in the future they plan to open up lunchtimes, which is great for locals, walkers, cyclists and horse riders.Speciality nights are planned in the near future and you really should give this pub a try. Recently discovered this pub after earlier ignoring when it had it problems a few years ago. Friendly welcome, good beers reasonably priced and also good wine - something The Beehive at Deanshanger seems unable to provide. The pub seems to benefit by not being tied. Food menu is not huge but was tasty and good and exactly what you want for a quick meal with a drink. Family friendly and a great asset to the local area.

Popped into The Lion as we were exploring the area and the smell of cooking food proved too tempting. So glad we did. The Lion is an incredibly friendly pub/restaurant - it wasn't just the landlord and landlady that made us feel at home, but also the other guests, locals - even Tia the chocolate labrador and tickle the parrot did their bit. And this was before we'd even started eating!Food was top notch too - a real good wholesome roast and a lovely pie, and all very good value. This time we came as we were passing through, but we'll be returning with The Lion very much as our destination.

My partner and I, with our neighbours went out for our Saturday dinner. We were a bit worried at first as when we arrived there was no paper menu, everything was written on a blackboard, and there didn't seem to be much choice, but when the food arrived, what a surprise: very fresh home made cooked food, and great service. I am surprised this little pub in this lovely village in the countryside (a few min away from Milton Keynes) is not more popular. Our neighbours were also pleasantly surprised their only gripe being a small range of beers!Anyway thank you Mavis for the warm welcome and my customized dessert (pan fried banana with chocolate and caramel sauce)They have a nice little garden with a boules pitch. You can ask for a set of boules to play if you wish and they have also a league (on the Facebook page) !We will be back.

This was the second time we have been to the Lion at Wicken and I must say I was not disappointed. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the home cooked food has been consistently good both times. We had my 3 year old nephew with us who was very interested in Tickle the parrot and the owners helped him say hello. Very friendly pub which we will visit again!

We booked a Saturday evening meal at the Lion based on recent Trip Advisor reviews and we were not disappointed. This was our first visit as we are not local but were in the area.We received a very warm welcome from the Landlord and, after a pre-meal drink, we ordered our food from the selection on the blackboard. The pub atmosphere was very pleasant and we selected a table nearer the bar rather than in the heart of the restaurant itself. The restaurant is not large, which makes it much more personal but, as it is unlikely that you will actually pass The Lion due to its village location, we would recommend booking in advance, particularly a larger party. All food was freshly cooked and our starters arrived promptly. The prawn cocktail, Gambas and mushrooms were all really nice. Our main courses arrived in a time period that allowed us to feel relaxed and totally unrushed. (In recent weeks, we have been rushed or wondering if we were ever going to eat so this was very welcomed). We had haddock, Italian cod and rump steak. Everything was excellent, filling and very tasty. We had a selection of the sweets available that day and all were thoroughly enjoyed. During the evening we had a number of beers, wine and a coffee and the bill for the four of us was, in our opinion, a very fair £96.This was a very pleasant and relaxed evening out in a welcoming and warm setting with excellent food and service. Will we return - Yes. It's worth the journey

Relaxed atmosphere, warm welcoming British pub. The food was served quickly and well, whilst the menu was small, the portion sizes were not, and you could tell they were all home made and not out of a packet! Friendly parrot and labrador in residence. The prices were VERY reasonable, my only gripe would be we were unsure if they sold desserts (there is no entry on their website for these). All in all, its just what you want when you don't want to do it yourself!

Thank you so much Mave and Adrian for making our family dinner for my sons birthday so lovely. The huge table was fantastic for a family get together and the food was delicious. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming from the owners and all of the staff and both of my sons loved cuddles from Tia Maria the dog and talking to Mr Tickle the parrot. We will be back to try your roast dinner very soon! Thank you again! PS. The candles on my sons pudding and the whole pub singing Happy Birthday was a lovely touch

We booked Sunday lunch for our party of 12 last week. The owners, Mavis & Ade and their staff are welcoming, friendly and attentive. The roasts(pork lamb & beef) were delicious and large portions. We were offered a complimentary starter of sweet potato soup, which was one of the tastiest soups I've ever had, and the puddings were gorgeous too. Our 8mth old grandson was welcomed into the pub, as are owners with dogs. Wicken is such a beautiful village, it's well worth a visit.I'm sure The Lion at Wicken is going to become a more regular destination for us to eat and drink. Thank you for making my dad's birthday great!

Visited Saturday afternoon with a friend up from London - I live in Deanshanger and have wanted to try this place for ages. Met with a very warm welcome and received great service throughout, grabbed a table by the fire and enjoyed a lovely pub lunch - beautifully presented and very tasty. Very reasonably priced and a good looking menu.Lovely little pub, made even better with the presence of a mad chocolate Labrador and a cozy fire!Wish I'd visited sooner and will be back with my fiancée for steak night! Highly recommend a visit.
