The staff were excellent but the room I stayed in was far too cold. It had a faulty window that had to be shut with the help of a piece of card, as the window catch was missing a vital part. The sataff did come up and looked but this didn't change anything. Not sure as to whether this was due to us being in the last room. The room was OK, although missing a chair. You had to sit on the bed to dry your hair and get dressed. Tea, coffee and chocolate provided as well as biscuits. The TV remote control refused to work and the staff were unable to fix it. Maybe they should offered to move us to a different room, but they didn't. Breakfast the following morning was OK, although the crossiants were a bit over cooked/burnt. It was good value and could have been so much better with a little thought.

Attended my grandson's 21st birthday party on 22nd Nov 2024 which was held in the back room downstairs. The party included 7 special needs young people (from his college) and their carers, and members of his family. Pros: Easy to find Good parking Traditional pub and restaurant Appeared to be clean and tidy Accessible for people with a disability Cons: Buffet was nether hot or cold. Most of it was frozen party food. Price charged was between the publicised cold and hot buffet tarrif Didn't serve what was on the menu Some items (corned beef pie) was still frozen and thawed into a mush Food brought out much too early Ordered for 30. Food wouldn't have fed 20 then mistakenly charged for 36! Sandwiches weren't covered and bread was dry Bar in the party room wasn't open so had to join the queues at the main bar Music play list was provided but ignored Food and all drinks very overpriced No customer service at all. Told they were short staffed. In short the booking for 30 people was accepted but in actual fact was treated as an aside to the main bar/restaurant with no customer care at all. Food was of the worst quality and quantity imaginable. Very overpriced. Overall the party went well because those attending made it happen. My advice for booking something similar at this venue.... stay clear.

A very warm welcome to this lovely pub/restaurant/hotel. Convenient location, great food and a comfy room with a generous sized bed and added chandelier :) Breakfast was lovely and very reasonable. My shepherd's pie was fresh cooked and the best I have had in a long time. Would stay again.

Stopped here after a trip to Newcastle on the way back to the midlands. The pub is easy to find, checked in really easy with the lady behind the bar who was really helpful and welcoming. She gave us a menu to take to our room so we could see if we were going to eat there. The room was nice, cozy and clean. Our room was facing the front and the traffic noise was not a problem. The bed was comfortable and we could not hear anything from the pub below. We decided to eat here and whilst not everything was available what we did have was really nice very filling and cooked really well. The staff were really friendly and stopped to have a chat with us whilst we were in the pub. The drinks were poured perfectly and I would say they know how to pour a good Guinness. The girl they had in singing was really good and added to the atmosphere.Would recommend this pub as a place to stay and eat in and we will be back.

Lovely tapas! We had lunch here and opted for 3 tapas dishes for £15 and a side of salt and pepper fries. We shared this between 2 people and the portion sizes were adequate for what we wanted. Another member of the party opted for the club sandwich which was jam packed, lots of chicken and bacon as well as salad. Lovely homemade chunky chips. We followed with a sharing dessert platter which is huge! All desserts were delicious. Will definitely be back

Checking in and collecting the room key is done at the bar. Carpet on the stairs has seen better days and the stains are off putting. Room and bathroom were ok. The elaborately carved legs on the bed are not proportionate to the size of the room and we bashed our legs against them on numerous occasions during our one night stay - I still have the bruises to prove it! No remote control for TV so had to manually change the channel circa 1979. No air con or portable fan available so room was baking hot despite the windows being open the entire duration. Bear in mind, the rooms are above a lively pub so expect some noise from the car park or live singer, especially on a Saturday. Breakfast was average. The menu stated ‘a selection of herbal infusions’. This amounted to green tea, green tea or erm, you’ve guessed it, green tea. They hadn’t put out any croissants on the buffet table and we had to ask for these (mentioned on the menu as today’s freshly baked). We waited 30 minutes for these to arrive and they came at the same time as our cooked breakfast. They were overdone and slightly burnt on the top which made me wonder whether they were from the previous day and had been reheated. There was only one member of staff available in the morning and they were busy serving breakfast tables so we weren’t able to speak with anyone regarding the niggles we had. The staff we encountered were friendly, courteous and helpful so I’ll finish on that positive.

Booked the Lambton Worm when we visited Durham and surrounds recently. Although we anticipated a good night's sleep we were very disappointed with the Crystal Room because we were disturbed throughout the night with noise directly under the bedroom window from extractor equipment from the kitchen. Breakfast and evening meal of an adequate standard. Room not to the standard expected. Hardly a boutique style.

Nathan helped us organise a Celebration of Life function and arranged everything as we requested. The function room is lovely and was already set up for our arrival. We chose the cold buffet which was nice and included hot chicken wings, onion rings & fries. The food was plentiful and tasty. We opted for an open bar with a designated bar person. My only negative would be that the bar person wasn't always available and guests would often be waiting quite a while to order a drink or a coffee, sometimes having to go through to the public bar area to be served. This wasn't a massive issue but maybe something to be noted. I would definitely recommend the Lambton Worm and wouldn't hesitate to book again for any kind of function in the future.

We stayed at the Lambton for 3 nights. We cannot fault the food, the breakfast was lovely and the chef cooked my fried egg perfectly. The lady who served us with breakfast was lovely and chatty and told us a lot about the surrounding area. The food at night was amazing. We had the roast on Sunday, my husband had the fish and I had the Chicken Sizzler on Monday, on Tuesday he had the Gammon steak and I again had the Chicken Sizzler (because I enjoyed it so much the night before) the staff were all young but very polite and pleasant. The reason I have rated it 3 was because the room did not meet our expectations of 4 star. It looked like it had not been cleaned properly for a long time as there was dust everywhere especially in the bathroom and the window sills and the floor definitely had not been hoovered before we got the room, the same goes for the corridors leading to the rooms, they had not been hoovered properly for a while.

Was treated to an overnight stay by a friend to celebrate my 50th birthday as it was close to a list of things I wanted to do. Initially on arriving all seemed well.. shed in the car park and rubbish piled high behind. When we got to the room there was no spare bed despite requesting a family room, not a big issue as within 10 minutes of getting in touch with down stairs a 1980’s style camp bed arrived which had clearly seen better days, as the middle had sagged terribly! The main bed wasn’t too bad and the room was generally clean. The bathroom door had seen better days as the bottom was all rotten the ceiling in the bedroom had been touched up with silk paint when Matt had clearly been used, bathroom floor was a hazard and the window wall had some brown stains on it! The shower head was a cheap white plastic after thought as everything else was chrome. Bar prices are very expensive and don’t believe the hype of being a real ale bar as they only had two on rest was run of the mill lager and cider. Food was ok, limited menu and expensive. Breakfast was a joke very small portions. Reminded me of faulty towers. Has potential if someone invests in the place, they’ve made an attempt downstairs just upstairs to concentrate on.

We were here yesterday as chauffeurs to my 88 year old Mum, who was attending a "Celebration of Life" event for a friend. This is germane to the review as it explains why we didn't just leave. It was very busy, but we were shown to a table. The chairs were so badly upholstered your backside almost hit the floor when you sat in them. Very uncomfortable. We ordered some food(just sandwiches)and settled down with a drink( notably overpriced for this area). The place was very busy, they appeared to have two functions going on at once and nowhere near enough staff to cope. There was a queue of six or seven people at the bar, with one person serving. We waited over an hour for our food(we would have got up and left had we not been committed to waiting for my parent.). When the food arrived the chips were burnt almost black. We weren't provided with any cutlery, so were unable to enjoy the coleslaw. We'd waited so long for the food we ate the sandwiches(mediocre)and complained about the chips to one of the staff. There was a a very offhand offer to replace the chips which we refused(we'd finished the food by this point)and he walked off without any other comment. Sometime later the young supervisor came over and apologised with an offer of desserts or drinks. In the interests of fairness, my wife did accept a coffee as we were still waiting for my Mum. To summarise, very expensive, not enough staff and underwhelming food. The young staff tried their best, but standards have slipped markedly since the last time we were here. We won't be back.

The food was very poor, on child size plates and not hot at all, just bland… The prices are not exactly cheap either but if you get what you pay for that’s fine but on this occasion it was a disgrace. It was mentioned to the lady serving but she just said I’m sorry to hear that….hence why we are not staying for a pudding as they are £6.95 each. The Diet Coke was flat? The month prior was really good hence our return but we won’t be going back ever again…..

Walked in and had a few drinks, was alright. We'd paid to stay overnight so we asked, they gave us keys, no problem. Paid for 2 adults and a child, there was only one bed, we reported this to a staff member and got a reply saying they'd do it after they finished what they were doing. After a while of waiting, we went into our room, they had put a camp bed in, we did not pay for a camp bed, we paid for a real bed. I went to the bathroom only for the tap to shoot water out at me, the bathroom was disgusting as shown in photos. There was a vanity in the corner of the room where it was the darkest and had no light. The chandelier was dirty as well. Would not stay here again.

Nice Sunday lunch, well cooked and good sized portions. This place is very good value for money. I did think the writing on the walls is quite tacky and it's totally unnecessary to display "carpe diem" side by side with the English translation. Most people know what it means and it almost feels offensive to think it might need to be explained. Overall, I would return and I would recommend the food to others based on my first visit.

Food was okay £7 for a pint of beer was OTT and very poor service. Two members of staff spent most of the time talking to each other. When food arrived we asked for some sauce. Staff member said they would get this straight away. Walked off and started to talk to her colleague again so had to remind them. Could understand this if the place was busy and they just forgot but there was only one other group of people in the pub but if this is the level of service I am not surprised. We arrived and was given keys to our room, i thought i had booked a room with a bathtub but I hadn’t, my partner went to the bar and asked if there was one available, lovely young man behind the bar changed it immediately to the goldings room. Lovely and clean apart from the sofa which was absolutely filthy, huge bed clean white bedding and towels. The room was like an oven despite turning the radiators off and opening the small window also I guess because of the age of the building the floors are very squeaky and very loud .. I knew when the people in the next room went to the bathroom, when people on the corridors passed etc. Food on the first evening was lovely, we had a table in the restaurant my only fault here was once we had eaten our main course we wasn’t offered desert. Breakfast was good the usual fruit juice and cereals, tea/coffee and a full English option. Saturday evening we booked a table for 7:30, went to order food my 1st choice wasn’t available nor where my 2nd, 3rd,4th and 5th 7:30 in a pub restaurant and hardly any food available?? We ended up leaving and going elsewhere .. this was supposed to be a relaxing break with minimal driving! When we arrived back at the hotel 10:15pm there was a party in the function room full of young people .. not our scene so we retreated to our room where we could hear every single beat of the rave music being played in fact it felt like the music was in our room, luckily it went off at 10:35 and was replaced with music playing low (could still hear it) but not as bad This place has so much potential but sadly one or two things let us down.

Booked seven of us, two down at home I'll with COVID, so five, one wheelchair user, another struggles but walks. We arrived and were promptly shown to table. First impressions were disappointing, a Christmas tree was up at the other end of the room, there were a few fairy lights chucked up and we're hanging down in a photo we took of family members. The service was fantastic, the food was a mixed bag, personally loved the starter but the main was poor, the meat was perfect, I hadLamb, but the veg was badly underdone, the roast potatoes had been fried clearly. The table decor was a cracker and a red serviette. My overall impression was disappointing as it felt like a typical Sunday dinner with no real effort to make it look and feel special. When I compare the eighty quid per head to other places, it ranks poorly.

The food was fabulous 👌, there was an acoustic guitarist and singer on the first night which was nice, staff were nice and friendly, but also very busy. We returned for evening meal the next day cos the food was so good, but then returned home despite it being pre-paid. The reason for this was slamming fire doors, this went on till early hours, after 3 am, and we really didn't get a good night sleep. I'd still recommend this place if you're a good sleeper, I'm not. It's worth going for the food, atmosphere, and entertainment, and I'm sure we will again, but we'll not be booking a room.

I stayed a couple of nights here in November. To start off with, I must say the pub is fab: really warm and with excellent food. The hotel experience sadly isn’t as good. The room I stayed in was a bit tired but I noticed rooms were being refurbished so maybe that’s currently in hand. The worst experience was breakfast where I couldn’t get a proper coffee because there weren’t enough people staying in the hotel to justify turning on the coffee machine. To be honest the staff working in the morning were quite unfriendly Anyway, a great pub and an ok budget hotel, but a bit of service and a smile in the morning would make such a difference

I’m at this premises for Sunday lunch most weeks and I’ve never had a bad meal. Place is clean (and dog friendly) and all the staff are professional and very prompt. Proper family vibe to the place too. Regular venue for my running club get together now too

My mother had her wedding reception here and the staff were absolutely wonderful there! Special thanks in particular to the lovely Sam and Briony who both went out of there way to make my mam (Caroline) feel really special considering the turn out because of bus strikes and illnesses, you're both a credit to your team!

Not a bad choice staying at the Lambton Worm. Comfy room with good breakfast. Whilst we’d return and recommend the pub it would benefit from some TLC and attention to detail. Window left open do room was freezing we shouldn’t need to request a heater. Cups weren’t clean in room. Kettle very dusty and hairdryer filter caked in fluff. Would have been better not to service the room after first night then we wouldn’t have felt disappointed at state of bed with pyjamas strewn over a half hearted made up bed? All brick a brace in bar is thick of dust, it conveys lack of trust in cleanliness of kitchen sadly but I’m hopeful this not so as good was good. Whilst this does not paint the best picture these are trivial and can be corrected in an instant. We did enjoy our stay.

Sadly a bit disappointed in our visit. Online menu looks really good and I was looking forward to the seafood mixed grill but when we arrived it was a limited menu only with no fish on it at all. Unfortunately this wasn't on the website when we booked or we would have probably eaten somewhere else. Starters were quite nice and in a tapas style. Partner had steak for main which he was on the whole happy with. I had chicken dish with asparagus. Potatoes were hard and there was 3 bits of asparagus. Service was quick but the waitresses need to interact a bit more, wine was put in the middle of the table with the top on, no offer to pour or try it. Mains were brought over and put down with not one word spoken. The young Male waiter however was very nice and friendly and called us a cab. I think we possibly visited expecting a nice evening meal but got more of an "okay tea". positive... it was 60 quid for starters mains and a bottle of wine.

Booked a table for 4 whilst in the area. The food was really tasty we have chicken burgers, hunter chicken and a beef sandwich. All meals came with proper thick home cooked chips which were delicious! Service was great. Highly recommend this place.

Really lovely dinner on the 11 August 2020.... amazing sharing plates to start the pork belly, the ham and pea terrine were fab... for mains pork gyros in wrap was tasty, friend had a yummy Thai curry really scruffy but only 2 prawn crackers was a tad dismal, (our dog adores them too) the real ales were good next time we are in the area we will return. Our dog was well looked after with a bowl of water and despite being tired we stayed and joined in with the quiz by helping the couple on the next table... With the lockdown reduction very good value for money... and adherence to distancing was very good - service was spot on and the local gin I had was a dream :)

After waiting an hour because the room was not ready we had a drink in he bar, we got the key to the room.On the way to the room the carpets were dirty and saw towels for other occupied rooms just left on the floor outside the rooms. Firstly the key didn't work so had to get another, when entering the room it was grubby and there was a strong odour of dampness. There was one had towel and one bath towel for us both. No curtains just a pull down blind which had splits in it. Outside the window there was two cooling units constantly going which I presume were to do with the beer cellar or kitchen. The bathroom was not much better than the rest of the place. I returned to reception and told the duty manager no thanks but she did offer another room to which I refused. Once bitten twice shy.

Visited for the second time and really enjoyed both meals.Wasn’t sure what to expect but the staff are very relaxed and make sure everything is clean and safe with plenty of hand gel and also plenty of room.Food was really nice, we had the mixed grill and gyroS the first time and couldn’t fault it, had steaks the second time and they were cooked perfectly, again couldn’t fault the food.In the past we really only used to pop in for drinks but now we will definitely have food more often.Prices are a little more expensive than maybe some pubs but we think it’s worth it.

Visited The Lambtom worm with my family due to a family occasion we needed three rooms between us all. When walking through the entrance we where kindly greeted and told where we could have some food, definitely choose the steak house! The rooms where nicely sized and my wife loved the furniture, very shabby chic. When me and the gang where ready we made our way to the steakhouse. The menu is outstanding and we all couldn't choose what we wanted, so we ordered a few of everything to share! Very delicious and definitely would reccomend to anyone visiting Durham area. Would like to say a massive thank you to our geordie server Natalie. She looked after us all night, eventhough we where loud and a handful. She was very professional but made us feel at home, good laugh. Staff so attentive with drinks and food to die for! When we're back in Durham, we will be back. Need to try out the rest of the menu.

We had an overnight stay here with our motorhome in the car park, which they allow when purchasing food/drinks from the pub. Its a 15 min walk into town and to the castle which was great but it's also on the bus route if you are not up for this. We had drinks in the evening and then an amazing breakfast in the morning. The quality was great and great value for money. Staff were all really friendly. would recommend.

We arrived and were seated straight away. The seats are not all the comfy (like a picnic table and benches) ordered our food. The food took around 20 minutes to be cooked. Lovely choices for family of all ages. Food was lovely also. Staff where friendly and prices were affordable. Will be back again to try something different.

Fantastic place for a meal. Food was 1st class. Nice atmosphere, lovely friendly staff. Prices are very reasonable with 2 main meals for under £14! There are plenty of parking spaces. Lovely clean toilets, too! We will definitely be coming back here the next time we are in the area. Update Dec 2024. Came back for a 2nd time, and we're not disappointed. Food and service were both excellent, and still two mains for under £14! Chocolate fudgecake was delicious 😋 I had a taste before I remembered to take a pic, so please excuse the presentation in the pic. It was perfect when it arrived at the table 😍

Beautiful Sunday lunch and a really nice pub with a comfortable atmosphere and seating: I would definitely recommend!. We had the chicken which was beautiful. Sticky toffee pudding is also divine.
