Staying in the area, and dropped into Malone Lodge...for a bite! The Knife and Fork was a small intimate restaurant serving both pub grub and more upscale dinners. The service was fabulous, but the food! Exceptional! Tasted great, beautifully presented, and great value! The next day we popped back into the bar... Macklins.....what a great little spot! Ordered Paninis...which were well priced, and believe me...almost a full meal! Huge portions! This little gem of a hotel is a real find..close to downtown..the Hop On, Hop Off stoops across the street, the people are friendly and accommodating......loved it! If u r a fan of small intimate places, this is the place for u!

On Friday evening my son and I were late out of Belfast and decided that we would get something to eat before heading on out home. We were travelling up the Malone Road when I remember the Malone lodge had a great restaurant, so we turned left into Eglantine Avenue and parked up. If you’ve never been in the Malone Lodge its fabulous. The setting is luxurious and lavish. There is a spacious reception area with plenty of seating. It really is a great spot to meet a friend for coffee or have an informal business meeting. On the left on the way in is also an in-house bar again with plenty of room. The Malone Lodge can also cater for conferences or weddings with plenty of function rooms and a wonderful hospitality team who will make your event flow seamlessly. Talking of their team Susie and Fisel were wonderfully attentive and friendly, we both enjoyed the evening and they had a lot to do with that. The menu looked tasty to say the least. They have a great offer on, two courses for under twenty pounds and three courses for under twenty-five. Considering the environment you are eating in and the standard of their food, it makes it a great choice, especially as it’s a fifteen-minute stroll into town which helps burn the calories off. We started the dinner off with scallops and goat’s cheese. Benjamin had the seared scallops, black pudding, carrot puree and watercress. It was a few years back when he tasted scallops for the first time off my plate at another restaurant. They had become a firm favourite of his now and he says that they always remind him of me. I don’t know what to make of that. He thoroughly enjoyed them. I tasted one just to be nosey and see how they performed. Textbook, great cooking and seasoning. I have noticed the flooding of salad, beetroot, walnuts and goat’s cheese into the menus around Belfast in recent times. Don’t get me wrong I like this classic combination. But I also find it is the perfect barometer to see how good a kitchen is. With a dish this simple, if they get this wrong, I don’t think there is much hope for the rest of the menu. This version was full of surprises and set me up for the rest of the meal. I decided to go for the salmon main. I think it was the inclusion of cockles that decided it for me. It has been ages since I have had them and was so looking forward to having them again. Crushed potatoes and a beautifully light persillade sauce accompanied the seafood duet. The salmon was ‘on fleek’ as my daughters would say. It is so refreshing to have in mind what a dish should be and have the chef produce the dish in a way that brings the anticipated to the plate. And those pickled cockles were the exclamation point on the dish. Predictably Benjamin went for steak. A 10oz sirloin, chunky chips, green peppercorn sauce and a tomato compote. It looked spectacular. I stole a chip as they were set down. Wow. I do love my chips a these were regal. The steak was ordered medium and that’s what he got. It just looked wonderful. If mine wasn’t so good I would have been so jealous. The portion size on this was huge, the steak was probably more like 12-14oz. Great value for money. The size of the steak did work in my favour as Benjamin was stuffed and didn’t want any dessert. But as for me, there is always room for dessert. So a sticky toffee pudding was sent for and delivered with all that and more. The orange toffee sauce was ‘stonking’ what a great idea. The sauce coated the pudding like a silk glove and the vanilla ice cream killed me. So opulent and rich in flavour, I immediately thought about booking a room for the night to sleep it off. If you haven’t been here for a meal, then please make room for a night out here. It is a fantastic venue with great staff and food. As I have also stayed over here before, I also would recommend the rooms, luxury is the term that springs to mind. I’m so glad I remembered The Malone Lodge and so will you.

No volveré

I went to this restaurant as it was close to my accommodation. The restaurant lacked atmosphere and the service was slow at best and mediocre at worst. The waiter did not offer a wine list and seemed uninformed as to what was on offer. The evening menu was a set menu of either 2 or 3 courses. By city standards, the price was reasonable. My wine was not properly chilled and was definitely overpriced - I pay less than that for a large glass in London and I had a small glass!!! The food is cooked in an open plan kitchen, so one is able to see what goes on. The food is placed under lights when ready to go and it depends on the waiter as to how long it sits there.Luckily, I was there early, when there were only 4 guests in the restaurant, so my food did not sit and congeal!! Some dishes were there for at least 10 minutes before collection by the waiter. My chicken supreme was cooked, but did not look too attractive. For an hotel restaurant that obviously deals with tour groups etc., the infrastructure seemed pretty poor.I would certainly not recommend this place unless to get out of the rain!!There are far better places in the area, on the Lisburn road, to eat.

Right where should I start. So we were given a living social voucher as a gift, I don't usually expect much from these vouchers and our expectations are not high plus we aren't fussy eaters, but it clearly states on the voucher that we could pick starter up to £6.50 and main up to £16 from the a la cartè menu, sat down and was given a very limited menu, when I queried this, the waiter did go and ask his manager and the answer was just no it was only the menu we were given that we were allowed to choose from which clearly isn't the a la cartè. Usually in advance before dining somewhere I like to look at the menu online so I know roughly what I would like but due to the limited choice in starters i ask if it was possible if we can swap it for a dessert instead which resulted was another trip to the manager again for his approval. For mains we had sirloin steak with chips and pepper sauce, this was the most blandness steak I ever had in a restaurant, usually the pepper sauce helps but that was tasteless too, ended up adding loads of pepper and salt on both for some flavour, now the only good thing about the steak that it was cooked to doneness I requested for. Our friends who gave us the voucher said it was nice but it was pretty disappointing to be honest, we weren't impressed at all with the food. Service was good though the guys were polite and friendly.

In Northern Ireland, a steak dinner typifies a meal out. Despite this, a nicely cooked one can be a rare thing. After hearing a few recommendations we decided to try our luck at Knife and Fork. The crab starter wasn't the usual dollop of mayonnaise with crab hidden in it. Both brown and white crab. Nice fresh toasted bread. Crisp apple set it off beautifully. The steak was tremendous. The artistic presentation wasn't wasted on it. Beautifully cooked and tender. Every bite was delicious. After the meal, we left the confines of the classy restaurant and sank into one of the many comfortable sofas in the lobby to enjoy after dinner drinks. The service provided by Seamus et al. was excellent. Will definitely return.

The highlight of our Belfast stay was enjoying dinner at the Malone Lodge's restaurant, The Knife & Fork, and terrific conversation with our servers Paul and Danny. The meal was exceptional, and we will all remember the shared laughter and genuine connection that we felt with Paul and Danny. Less than 12 hours into our stay in Ireland, these two took time in the afternoon to chat with us about more than just our planned travels. Hockey, university, even America's often-amusing current political situation were all covered before Paul and Danny sent us off with pre-dinner pub recommendations. Later, we were greeted with smiles and a wave when we returned to the hotel to end our evening with a lovely family dinner The mark of a top-shelf establishment is its ability to make all guests feel at home, and this Colorado family will have nothing but praise for The Knife & Fork Grill and its quality staff.

This place was recommended to us by our B&B, and we were impressed as we walked into the hotel. Greeted by very well-dressed people with warm smiles. The restaurant was less impressive. There were four different menus depending on which “package” we were on, but as we were just walk-ins, we were offered yet another menu. The choices were interesting and had several local specialities. We opted for a smoked lamb nicoise salad, the roast cauliflower soup to start, and the duck breast and sirloin steak for main. Perhaps we should have checked out our surroundings as well as the menu, for after we had ordered, we realised that only one table had any food, and several other diners were impatiently looking at their watches. We noticed food being placed on the serving hatch, as this is a grill style restaurant with views into the kitchen. The chef tapped an ineffective bell, and then the food sat on the serving hatch for several minutes. The waiting staff were all very young, and while friendly and cheerful enough, didn’t seem to have a clue about serving customers. We watched our own soup wait on the counter for five minutes until the other starter appeared. The restaurant filled up and we noticed the confusion being caused by so many different menus. The kitchen bell kept ringing and the food kept waiting. We had decided that we were going to tell the chef what we had ordered and get him to call out our name when it was ready! There was mild excitement when the chef, the only person over thirty that we could see, came into the bar to shout at the waiters. Another waiter appeared with even less clue about what to do. Our mains arrived, we were now very hungry. So, what do we do? eat lukewarm food, or send it back and wait even longer. The food was fairly good, the variety and style of the vegetables served with the duck was impressive, and it would have been a good meal if it had been hot. We didn’t order dessert, and we noticed other people leaving as soon as they had finished their mains, so this poor service is probably cutting into their income. There didn’t seem to be anyone to talk to about our lukewarm food, and we had to ask all three waiters before a bill finally appeared. As we left I cast a sympathetic eye over a table of seven, who arrived shortly after us, and within the time we had eaten two courses, they had only been served some bread and butter.

Unfortunately I had one of the worst dinning experiences in a long time.1. The corner of the restaurant we sat in was very cold (still better than too warm)2. Waited approx. 1h for our food3. Couldn't eat my food:I ordered the K&F burger and chips. Both had no real flavour. But what made it worse, the burger and bun were so dry that I believe it was cooked straight after we ordered and then kept warm until my wife's duck was cooked. The duck was undercooked, so I guess there was about 45min between the times when our orders where prepared. But, after I told the waiter that I wasn't happy and he may take my food back to the kitchen, he apologised and took the burger off the bill. He also offered a free drink, but I declined.I hope the food problem was only a slip up in the kitchen. But as both dishes weren't great, I have no intention of going back.

After booking a spontaneous trip to Belfast for our 3 year anniversary/valentines day - my partner and I were walking past this restaurant on our way back to the hotel. As it looked lovely inside, we inquired about the specialist 4 course menu, followed by availability for the same evening - as the price was already extremely great value. Upon arrival, we were seated and water and 2x flutes of champagne was brought over to the table without any prompts - it really set the scene and I felt so glad to be glammed up! After we ordered our courses, they arrived in good time after one another - not too late, nor too early. The food itself was absolutely perfect. Aroma, visual appearance, texture and taste was 10/10 for both my partner and I. Staff were attentive, charming, humorous and always available. The atmosphere was so relaxed - music was noticeable but at perfect volume, allowing you to hold a conversation with ease, unlike most restaurants these days. We visited here on a Wowcher deal on the Friday night this weekend, in the knife & fork grill restaurant, it consisted of a two course meal for 2 with a small glass of wine each. When we arrived we were greeted by friendly staff who presented us with the menu specifically for customers who had bought the deal, upon inspection the menu was laid out with supplements attached to most of the meals, and sides were also extra, this was very disappointing and it meant trying to choose the meals which had no supplement price attached this was very limited. For starters my husband ordered the chicken terrine, and I got confit of duck on bed of lentils, my husband said his was fine nothing special, but my duck was way to salty, and the lentils were salty also, so instead of the lentils complimenting the duck it was just salt on salt....l needed a big drink of water after that.. I did mention the over salting to one of the staff and he just said he would tell the chef, no apology or action was taken. We moved on to mains, I thought I would give them the benefit of the dought and order the sirloin steak and chips, at a £8 supplement ....as I thought steak is pretty easy to cook,,, I ordered medium,,,,, oh dear! The steak was overcooked, really chewy and tough,,, chips were triple cooked,,, they tasted like frozen dry in the middle chips, lucky the meal came with pepper sauce which I was able to pour all over chips to soften them so I could eat them, sauce was nice. Husband got chicken with mushroom risotto, again he said it was average. Again I nicely mentioned the steak was over to one of the waiters, again no action taken. We ended the meal with two coffees, mine being a liquor coffee, it was lovely, thank god!To lift the mood we thought we would venture into the bar upon hearing from one of the waiters that they do cocktails at the bar on weekends for £5.50,, so I thought I like to try one,,, when I got to the bar and asked if I could try a cocktail, I was told "no" by a young waiter behind bar, he said we don't make them here, I then said well its just I came from your restaurant and they said you do, the waiter became quite rude and questioned me saying "who would have told me that?"and "was I sure I was in the restaurant", he looked very shocked by this, was rude and defensive in his attitude,, he then said "I will have to go to the restaurant to get you one, they make them there",,, at this point I was feeling very awkward and embarrassed by the scene he had made at the bar, ....he then marched off to the restaurant in annoyance, came back and asked what did I want?..and he will tell them and then "THEY" would bring me one out,,, ( I have highlighted THEY because he said it in such a way it was derogatory to the restaurant staff),,,the staff from the restaurant then came out with my drink and apologised for the mix up.The manageress/ supervisor of the restaurant then also came out to the bar and I explained to her the waiter serving behind the bar had a bit of an attitude,,, and although she was very nice and apologised for him, I have to be honest and say she spent more time talking to me for ages about how she was good for the hotel and that she had been asked to come back there to work again as she had left before,,, I therefore found the apology from her to be lacking sensitivity and sincerity as no compensation or token was offered.I'm not one to ever look for a freebie, but in this case a token offered at the time would have been a nice thought to make up for disappointing food and an unsatisfactory customer moment.Quite frankly I left the Malone lodge with a bad taste in my mouth. In my opinion not even worth the Wowcher price spent at £29 as supplements are attached to that and consequently is not good value.Unfortunately we did not have a nice experience in the knife & fork bistro or the in the main hotel bar. Therefore I wouldn't recommend this place or go back again.

The restaurant is in an attractive room with subdued lighting, in a lovely Boutique style hotel, near Queen's university. The dining room offers views of the kitchen. My chicken terrine was tasty and my main of cod served with a crispy egg was unusual. Service was attentive but not overwhelming. I would return

We were staying in the Malone Hotel Apartments and went for Sunday evening early bird dinner offer using the 10% discount for guests = £15.00 each for 2 courses.Restaurant was fully booked so ended up in the bar which was no problem as there was a nice atmosphere. Service was polite and efficient. Food was very nice with no complaints other then strangely cooked parsnips. Only slight downside was the shock when the drinks bill came ! Should have checked that before ordering.

Having read the good reviews for the knife and fork on TripAdvisor, my husband and I decided to give it a go. On ringing to book I was asked if we would like the wine bar or grill. We opted for the grill as we were forward to the steaks. We booked the Saturday afternoon for the same Saturday night. Having arrived at the the restaurant we were told the grill was in fact closed and offered a table at table the bar and offer the menu. The menu was terrible. So we left. Extremely disappointed that we weren't able to eat in the grill as booked.

Visited the knife & fork for my brothers 40th..I had my wedding reception in the malone lodge hotel and rated it very highly as everything's by was excellent. On this visit though I was left wanting. I ordered crab cakes for a starter whilst my kids had chicken goujons and carbonara. The crab cakes were sold out so I thought I would order the scampi starter. My young lad complained about the carbonara and when I tried some I could see why, it tasted more like a mac n cheese sauce and it was very strong cheddar taste for a sauce that should have tasted creamy. My daughters goujons were fine no complaints. I've had the scampi starter here before and knew it was a small portion but to receive 4 small pieces of scampi ( I mean tiny) on a large plate...was really awful!!! For my mains I ordered duck- it was around £18 on the menu but didn't come with a side so I ordered fries. I was expecting a half duck or leg of duck but what I got for the price was 4 small slices of duck served on what I can only describe as a bitter awful paste and 4 small pieces of broccoli. The paste de bot compliment the dish at all and was awful. I ordered the cheesecake for desert and the kids received one single scoop of ice cream for free even though there main was £6 I found this awfully stingy to say the least ( disgraceful to be honest). The cheesecake came deconstructed which was supposed to be with ginger biscuit eventually arrived with 3 1cm cubes of ginger bread and a slice of pear with two spoonfuls of topping. Awful Desert. Awful mains and awful Value for money... i can understand trying to be fancy dining but this was way off the mark and aHorrible experience for me. Not worth the money u will spend honestly....

Staff are okay and service is good. Food is typical British i.e. not very exciting. Seafoods are way better than roasts and the choice of beer from the tap is limited.Early bird menu is a bargain. In additional to that a 10% discount for the dinner if the guest booked it through the hotel! Walk-in hotel guest, even with a room rented like us are NOT entitled! What a strange rule.

We were treated to a meal here to celebrate a recent significant event.. The greeting, service, quality of food and general ambience were all superb. I could not fault them. The mixed breads to start were very good. My wife had a chicken dish while I ate a vegetable risotto. All excellent. Now, a little criticism. The shortage of vegetarian options was a great disappointment and shows a lack of thought at a time when so many people are eschewing the dubious delights of flesh. Also, we made the restaurant aware at the time of booking that one of the guests was vegetarian. Yet, when the breads arrived one of them was stuffed with chorizo. This has cost them one star. But, overall, a very good experience and recommended ( for carnivores).

We stayed in the Malone Lodge, home of the Knife and Fork, and arriving late in the evening decided to eat in house. We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food and the cordiality of the staff. The bread "flight" which was 3-4 different breads with three flavored butters was a hit appetizer. The entrees, whether fish or the gnocchi or the oversized burger were excellent as well. If you stay at the Malone definitely try it out and if nearby it's worth a visit too.

I decided to try dinner in the restaurant, as we were staying at the hotel and enjoyed the breakfast. The menu isn't huge, but that's often not a bad thing. The rib eye steak was properly matured and tender. Meals tend to come with potatoes in their various forms only, other veg being extra. A very interesting range of desserts, all of which we found fine. £100 for three people including wine and a beer seemed fair.

The food here is absolutely lovely but I do think that they need to focus more on the seated guests rather than room service orders. I visited two nights running and both times we had to wait at least half an hour for our meals whereas room service orders were coming in and being sent up to rooms straight away! However all waiting staff were lovely and polite, I just think that it's a shame about how long the food took to arrive.

My daughter had pancakes with syrup. they looked lovely. we ate again here in evening as I had left my car nearby and everywhere in city was so busy. Had no reservation so were lucky to get seat as they were quite busy. We both had the Christmas dinner main course. It was v nicely presented and very tasty. Didnt like the brussels sprouts as they were mixed with some sort of sauce. Also advised the waitress that knives might need sharpened as we had difficulty cutting the food! however service was in good time and staff were pleasant.

Decided to give this place a try last Saturday night, and given it's out of the centre we didn't have a problem getting a table that day and the food was really quite good.My wife had scallops (which she approved of), whilst I had something called bread shots. This was different types of bread with different fillings, and served with different types of flavoured butter. A good dish, but be warned it is big and probably better to share.I had the triple pig burger (burger, bacon and pulled pork), and it was just the right amount of meat. Some burgers can be just too much.I did try the Banoffee Twist, but was slightly disappointed with the Banana Bread, I thought it might be better.All-in-all though, recommended.

I have been to the Malone Lodge a number of times and had my breakfast in The Knife and Fork Grill and it is in my opinion the best about! Marco (sorry if it's spelt wrong) is fantastic and the food second to none. Each meal is cooked to order and presented as a work of art and tastes as good as it looks. The staff around the restaurant are attentive and nothing is ever an issue to get, in particular Danielle who served me never blinked when I asked for toast even though the toaster was beside me and is self service. We were in a suite at the hotel but this restaurant is a jewel in its crown and is reason enough to keep coming back.

Party of 3 was there for pre theatre meal. I ordered the burger and chips and asked to have only onions on it. The server said there was no onions and the chef didn't like change. I asked would he ask him first before I got another option. He came back and said he said he will give you raw onions and THAT'S IT. How rude was this, there was other diners getting onion rings so shouldn't have been a problem. On way out giving a tip we said to the server maybe give it to the chef and he can buy a bag of onions.!! There is no need to be so RUDE. Very disappointed.

Incredibly disappointed. Went with 3 friends for the 3 course £45 christmas dinner. Soup was disgusting, cheaply produced, curry tasted strange and had no accompanying bread (even though the waiter promised they would bring some). Christmas main course was too small and we had to order extra sides. Coke zeros ordered were flat and probably out of a 2 litre bottle. They were sent back. Service seemed rushed and staff were generally inattentive. Poor value for what you pay then there's the 10% discretionary service charge added to the bill at the end. Disappointing and won't be back.

Warm friendly welcome with a smile into a comfortable relaxed atmosphere. Tables are well spaced out to allow for enough privacy. The decor is modern, clean and uncluttered with warm adequate lighting. The kitchen is in sight from the restaurant seating where you can see the chefs happy at their work. A very relaxed unrushed feel to ordering. The staff are very knowledgeable and take a personal approach to the service. Just the right time between courses and the portions are enough that you'll feel like you've actually had a feed! The food is delicious and you'll definitely end up tasting everyone else's dinner! The toilets available are very clean and homely. I cannot fault my visit whatsoever. We will definitely continue to return to Tedfords Kitchen time and time again.
