Spent a Random Nite in The Annex behind Pub for No reason only because I could. Cosy room with very fresh linen . went in the pub to eat was great value 3 Courses for £15 Pensioners Special . Small Fish was larger than expected really enjoyed The Food even the Landlord trying to wind me up I don’t look old enough to Qualify 🤪 Friendly Staff Nice area of North Essex lot More rural than rest of the Country .

My review is purely for the hotel/rooms, as I didn't eat there. I booked to stay overnight before an early flight from Stansted. I slept so little, that it was a complete waste of money. I'd have been better off staying at home and waking up at 2am. The negatives: - Extremely uncomfortable mattress, like another recent reviewer, I slept on top of the duvet. - My room with a single glazed window faced onto a yard, where the staff and kitchen (but not customers) were making noise until late. You won't be able to sleep until at least the pub closing time, as they have no respect for people sleeping just a short distance away. - Around midnight, a member of staff was throwing glass bottles into a bin, which woke me up after I managed to finally get to sleep. - Noise from some sort of extractor/air con unit in the yard outside the room woke me up multiple times after midnight, which came on at random times during night and was extremely noisy. Even with ear plugs, this noise continued to wake me up. - The bathroom extractor fan was noisy and you could hear next door's. - Sewerage smell in bathroom that made me feel sick each time I went in there. - All the silicone in the shower needs redoing; it was visibly mouldy. - You have to walk past kitchen extractor (chip oil smell) to reach room and for this reason, you can't leave the bedroom window open for any significant period of time, so the room was very hot. - No proper welcome from the staff, just told there's no breakfast. - The WiFi password on a sign in the room didn't work. - No hooks to hang a coat or chair to place them on the back of, just an old bar stool to sit on. The positives: - Location good for Stansted Airport. - Free car parking. - Generous tea and coffee tray, with a carton of Ribena juice.

My review is for the hotel/stay and dinner/food. Hotel first; Sadly the stay wasnt as enjoyable as hoped. The mattresses we completely worn out to the point youd sink through the springs and onto the wooden board of the beds. We luckily went on a hot day so we could sleep ontop of the duvet for extra cushioning. The shower was stained red on the floor and there were obvious bits of mould around the shower cubicle too. The heater in the room didnt work (we tried for curiosity) and the shower we didnt use as it wasnt clean. Staff were friendly and helpful though and its a short bus ride away from the airport. Food; the staff kindly served us on the brink of last food orders and were kind and polite. The food was a reasonable portion and although slightly on the pricier side, wasnt unexpected for pub not far from an airport.

Friendly local. I have no complaints regarding the seniors meal deal. We had 3 courses for £15 (2 courses £12). Regular pub grub. Beer had been kept well so lovely pint of IPA.

Popped in for a quick bite for lunch on our way to Cambridge. Great value for money. Friendly and helpful staff.

Nice pub! I had the pie option and it was fairly tasty. It lacked atmosphere for a Friday night, but the staff were friendly and charismatic

Very nice pub with good dinner. We had sea bass, lamb and apple crumble, all great. We stayed at the Travel Lodge Hotel, from there you can walk here in 10 minutes - on the left side of the road, opposite the gas station, there is a sidewalk that leads to the intersection in front of the pub.

Great place to stop while you waiting for a flight.

Really enjoyable food. Popped in as fed up with the other 'local' pubs serving mediocre food. Had a really good steak and a pint. Definitely good prices with generous portions. Shall be returning with the family.

We visited yesterday on our way back from Stansted Airport. It's only a short drive from there and they have a small carpark out front. We ordered 2 rump steaks (£16 each), a cheese and bacon burger (£12) and a tuna melt (£7). The portion sizes were really large and definitely worth the prices. Very tasty food. Would visit again if ever need a bite to eat on the way back from the airport.

Great bear, good pub food and friendly staff

Just had the Sunday carvery with my elderly mum on a visit. Staff helpful and welcoming including the chef who was present at the carvery. The roast was really delicious and very generous helpings making it great value for the cost. Really a lovely experience. Even the locals helped me to escort mum put side. I will back on our next visit. Thank you to alll staff

Best place to stay for miles, comfortable bed ,nice powerful hot shower plently of space in room and food is good the pub

Friendly and helpful bar staff, unfortunately the evening we went was Bingo night, so felt a bit awkward and felt like we needed to whisper, Still the locals looked they were enjoying their night, so if you like Bingo go on a Tuesday apparently its a weekly event.

Our group of 6 stopped in for lunch. Good food and service, would recommend.

Had my birthday party there last week with my family!! Great food/Service! Pub been refurbished recently and looks great!! Beer prices decent too!!

☀️😎We sat outside with the dog because it was so very hot that day. The bar area was very pleasant and the staff friendly, the toilets are very clean and smart. We collected our drinks and went back outside. My beer was very nice, but the courtyard area out back was not too great, our table was a bit rotten and the area unloved. Next time we'll sit inside where it's much nicer.

We booked a room for the night as we were going to a party in Rayne. On arrival we were greeted by the bar staff who were very welcoming and friendly, one took us to our room. It was quite basic but totally fine for what we needed clean, tidy and warm there was plenty of tea and coffee not just the usual 2 of each. We then went to the bar for some food and drink which were excellent and again the staff were very friendly and even helped us to book a cab to take us to the party. One even drove us to the party when the taxi failed to arrive. When we got back from the party we had a drink in the bar where again we were made to feel really welcome by both the staff and customers in the bar I would totally recommend them and if in the area will definitely go there again.

Nice place to stay, three rooms in a separate building out the back. Service and beer good. Cannot comment on the food, as food is not served on a Monday. Overall nice stay

I have only eaten there at lunch times, I go once a month with friends so I can't give an opinion of what it is like in the evenings. The food and the service is good with a very relaxed atmosphere- which we like. We are never pressured to vacate our table as we have found in other eateries!!!

I stayed for one night at The Kicking Dickey and absolutely loved it. The ensuite room was comfortable, clean and spacious and on arrival I received the warmest welcome ever, I would definitely stay again! Amazing value for money.

We booked a room for one night prior to our flight. The room was very nice - in a separate annex in the beer garden, very clean and tidy. We had food which was fresh and delicious. The only thing that bothered us was that there was a humming/water running sound coming from the neighbour building behind one of the beds, which made it a bit challenging to go to sleep. But it wasn't too loud and my partner had brought ear plugs.

Stayed for 1 night. Really lovely friendly pub. Room was very clean and perfect for overnight stay before airport. Food was amazing and very good value. Great staff...felt at home as soon as I arrived. Thank you x

Friendly, not busy. Used by locals as well. I had Meal & ale only. Can't comment upon rooms. Bus to Stansted Airport about 3 minutes walk away.updatedcJune 2023 .. friendly staff. Beer good. Fairly busy.

Lovely family meal at short notice for 8 people as where we was booked up just shut up shop for the night without letting us know. The Kicking Dickey came to the rescue and served up a top meal for all 8 of us.

My partner and I stayed in the pub accommodation before catching early flight from Stansted. The room was functional but clean and as described. It wasn’t too loud and the check in was quick. The only issue we had was with one of the beds being super squeaky and making noise each time turning. We also managed to get some pub grub - portions were big and good for the money we paid. The improvement needed with some soft fizzy drinks that had no gas in it at all. Overall, if you are looking for a clean functional room for a very reasonable price we could recommend the place.

Clean and comfortable bed. Quiet as in a separate annex to the pub. Peaceful night. Welcoming staff. Enjoyed my pub grub of sausages mash and peas and gravy. Just what I needed! Short walk into Gt Dunmow. Good location.

The room was clean and tidy and the linen was fresh. There was a problem with the TV aerial, which I had to strip back and repair, so we could watch the TV. The shower was Luke warm at best and we were unable to use this. There was no time to complain and get this sorted, as this was morning and we were going to catch a flight.

Staff is friendly, and food was average.

The food is for every taste and it is quick to serve.

Spent two nights in this lovely place. Very clean, good wifi, located just a few minutes by foot from the town centre. There's a bus stop for a line taking you to the airport just down the road. The staff was fantastic. Very friendly and kind. I checked out forgetting some items in the room. The staff tried to contact me and were very helpful in returning everything to me. All in all a very pleasant stay. Thanks again!

A decent local pub, if not a bit rough around the edges, with pool table, dart board, and outside space. Staff and clientele are good, very friendly.

Burger wasn’t cooked properly, meal was really boring whit no salad, don’t recommend it

This was perfect for our night away while attending a sports training event. It was clean, tidy, warm and comfortable. Would recommend and would stay again.

Perfect fish and chips. Really great value and plenty of it. Chicken, bacon and leek pie was fabulous!

We held my brothers wake here today after his funeral, the food was excellent & great service from all the staff made the day go off better , I would highly recommend this venue well done & thank you again 👍🏻

Popped in for an early evening meal based on the other reviews I had read. Nice country pub on the edge of town, sadly it is slowly being built up around. Decent sized beer garden. I had the veggie sausages, eggs and chips. My friend had the fancy hot dog and chips. Decent prices, decent portions, decent food. Clearly a popular pub with the locals which is important. Tradition british pub, good selection of beers,, did not try the food, not available on Mondays, staff all good.

Clean, warm comfortable. If you are over 6ft, the beds might be a bit short and they have a kickboard. Tea and coffee plentiful. No breakfast, but the price reflects that

Great pool table inside, lovely food and atmosphere. Plenty of social nights arranged here each month including bingo and quiz nights ! Outside seating area too and child friendly.

We had our work Xmas drinks here last night and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. We had a room to ourselves and the staff made sure noone was waiting for drinks. Thoroughly recommend the place and thanks for making it a really good evening!!!!!

The accommodation is a chalet style to the rear of the pub garden. Clean, quite with all the basic facilities. A good supply of tea bags, coffee, milk and juice cartons in the room. Excellent value.

My brother held his 60th birthday at the pub. The staff were amazing and couldn't have been more helpful. The vegan buffet options were delicious. Thanks for a great night.

Typical locals pub, a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Came for a birthday celebration. Food was basic but nice and drinks were always flowing

We stayed in one of their rooms which are in a small separate building. We chose this place because it was very convenient for Stansted airport, and also because the room had two single beds. It was clean and comfortable and very quiet as it was away from the main building. Definitely would stay again.

Wonderful service took great care of us.

Room provided was spacious and clean and was as good as any Premier Inn or Travel Lodge's I have previously stayed in. In fact the little details like providing juice and biscuits with the coffee/tea making facilities make it a better choice. The beds were comfortable and it was peaceful for night's sleep. Only stayed here overnight as had early flight from Stansted (10-15 mins away), made it ideal. The only downside is food choices are limited, but like me you can walk into Dunmow where there are more choices.

The worst Sunday roast I've ever had. Meat was really dry, vegetables steamed to the point of disintegration. No flavour, watery, terrible. The potatoes were ok, and the cheesy cauliflower was ok, but everything else was disgusting. I don't give many one star reviews, but for £12 it's justified.

Great food worthy of a Michelin star

Stopped off for lunch today on a day trip out in the Essex countryside. Excellent food (fish & chips and an very tasty cherry crumble for dessert), excellent service and very well priced.

It's a very confusing place, piles of fresh cut logs but no wood burner, kids toys in the 'restaurant ' area. Not sure what it wants to be, pub, nursery, restaurant. Didn't see anyone eating or a menu.

Cheap and basic accommodation. Fine for its price. Shower head was coming off the wall. breakfast not provided. So we went to the Travelodge down the road. The pub itself was nice. Staff were friendly.

Great food and a nice drinks selection. Very clean. It has a lovely outside seating area with comfy clean benches. Friendly service and not expensive. Would recommend.

Really nice place to stay when you are traveling from Stansted airport. Cozy and clean for affordable price and the surrounding city is lovely!
