Only went in for a beer, but the place was buzzing. I was going to church in the back of beyond for a christening menu was interesting and varied

A pub in the traditional sense without TVs and fruit machines. Good food, good service, very pleasant ambience, great value overall. Recommended.

Lovely quaint, dog friendly pub located in Dunmow. The food was fresh, tasty, and good portion sizes. They had an amazing roaring fire, and it's views overlook fields. It was my first time but it won't be my last. It was a pretty impressive first visit. I would highly recommend it. Just make sure you book a table as we visited at 12:45 and it started getting really busy.

We found this pub via google when looking for somewhere to stop for dinner and decided to go because of the ratings. This is one of the best pubs for food, service and atmosphere I've been in where the standards are so high. We had the fish and chips and liver and bacon 🥓 - both superb quality and good portion sizes. I'm coming back!

Most disappointing this visit! Generally mush better than today but I say as I find! They were far from busy but the staff were far from attentive. Drinks took nearly an hour to turn up and food order was over an hour to take and a further hour to serve! The saving grace was the food that was obviously freshly cooked, beautifully cooked and delicious! Plates took for ever to clear and two were not cleared as we left. We didn’t wait for puddings or coffee as some of us had a long way to drive. One very unfortunate thing was a girl on the next table had an awful hacking cough which one of our company said nearly stopped him eating his meal!

My son attends the pre school at the village hall and I kept on at my husband that I wanted to try here. Today it finally happened and we wasn't disappointed. Food was absolutely amazing and there was a good choice of drinks available. Staff were amazing and the pub was nice and cosy with the log fire going. Have now found my new favourite place to come. Can highly recommend

A lovely modern county pub. We stopped off this afternoon & enjoyed a gin & tonic & their lovely halloumi sticks with mayonnaise. The menu was extensive, but today, we only needed a pitstop on our journey. They have special offer days & I suspect we'll be back for Tuesday burger special. It will be very nice to sit out in the beer garden or under the marquee in the summer.

I went in a Tuesday evening and it was busy- which surely tells you something! The service was good and the food arrived very soon after ordering and that was very good as well. The pub had a nice cosy atmosphere, I would definitely go there again.

Stopped by for a drink, haven't tried their food but it looked really good and the service was top. Definitely going back when I pass by again

Quite frankly the worst food I’ve eaten out. Chef is clearly lacking any imagination. Avoid if you value your tastebuds.

Food was cooked lovely but portions are small.id advise all 3 courses.

A proper countryside’s pub that served quality food. It also can be used as a venue for weddings or events.

The staff were all very friendly, polite and took time to have a chat. Settings and deco were very warm and inviting The food was fanastic. Will visit again very soon

Met friends here today and had the Monday special roasts. Best roast dinner I've had outside of home in ages. Generous fresh food. Will definitely come back.

We sat outside in the garden, really lovely and well kept. Nice staff too.

Wasn't expecting much and I was a bit worried about the prices (about £19 for most of the basic main dishes like fish and chips). However, the liver and bacon was delicious and my brother got the mussels which he really enjoyed. Only complaint was the banoffee sundae which was rubbish. Seemed to be barely any ice cream and the toffee sauce wasn't the best. I'd come back again for mains though.

Visited on a Sunday evening. Food and beer was fantastic. My missus doesn't like Liver and Bacon, so I very rarely get to have it, absolutely wonderful, my only gripe, what's literally offal, bacon and mash potato cost £18.50 , sorry that's why you got a four star

We didn’t even get as far as booking. I tried to book on-line but it says it’s “ Offline” I tried calling numerous times at different times last night , the phone rings for ages then the line is cut off, the one time the phone was picked up a lady spoke she then cut me off before I had a chance to book. I tried again today and the booking is still “offline” I called again TWICE and this time the phone was blatantly put down after one ring both times, so on that basis even if they are constantly busy the customer service is still not giving me good vibes so I have gone elsewhere, if its that stressful just to book I certainly don’t want to have a meal there.

I'm ceoliac and love that the Axe and Compasses have a whole gluten free menu! Had the best gluten free burger I've ever had!! We had a party of 8 people and all said the food was brilliant. Would highly recommend.

We visited today. It was our Wedding Anniversary. The food was nice although I felt the staff were not very friendly and welcoming. We are not locals however it was rather disappointing not to feel welcome. I also think the prices are inflated. We won't be returning.

Five of us had the roast dinner, food was very nice. Service was very good but a bit on the slow side. Not the cheapest but would not stop us returning.

Spectacularly average to poor food overall. 4 of us had fish and chips. Both people who had the cod said it was tasteless and one of them said the batter was burnt. Those who ordered the haddock seemed happier. My steak and kidney pudding was very poor indeed - the pastry was hard and there was no filling to speak of. What little there was consisted of gravy with one or two indeterminate lumps of meat. I’d have been hard pressed to identify any kidney at all - at £16.95 that seemed a major fail. Chips were good all round but to be honest nothing special. All of us ordered peas (charged extra!!) - both of us who had garden as opposed to mushy thought they were very hard. The gravy was good but, as I’ve said, I wasn’t short of gravy with my pudding as it stood. We were served two pints of cloudy London Pride which were quickly replaced with a Chelmsford Brewery pint - sadly not my preferred drink but the pub was out of Adnams Southwold bitter as well as Pride by this point. Disappointing to write a review like this of a pub where so many seem to have experienced quite the opposite. Unfortunately, I don’t particularly feel inclined to go back to see if it was just an off day. Appalling indigestion ensued from the badly cooked suet pudding and frankly, there are lots of other pubs to try out. Service was quick and cheerful mostly. Sweets were deigned ‘good’.

We went for lunch on a Wednesday and the pub was packed. Always a good sign. The meal was lovely. I had belly of pork which was delicious. We all enjoyed our meals and dare l say it, it was good value for money. Can't wait to go back again. I'd recommend booking though to avoid disappointment.

Axe and Compass is in the middle of the Rodings so little drive but worth the visit. Has a new Manager this year who is very nice. The food is good quility and good value especially 241 days Monday to Wednesday, Monday is Roast, Tuesday is Burgers and Wednesday fish. We went on a Wednesday and both meals were excellent. They have three real ales, which they rotate, none to my taste this time, see picture but normally have London Pride on. I would recommend booking to ensure a table as popular. They advertise quiz night and I been to singers nights so check if that interest you. Large outside area, garden and covered area.

Unfortunately we had a bad experience. There were 6 of, just having a little catch up and some food. The service wasn't the best, it was extremely slow, the waitress didn't really know what she was doing and kept forgetting things. We waited an absolute age for our 1st drinks, and then had to ask for more, we weren't offered any. We waited over an hour for the food, and whilst the majority was lovely, my fish wasn't, there was something not quite right, it was chewy and fatty, it was hot enough, so on probing would seem cooked, but it definitely wasn't cooked. I was offered another meal, but we had waited so long for this one, I didn't want to wait an age again and then eat after my party had eaten. I was told if I gmhad the Scampi I wouldn't wait long! The whole slowness and dizziness of the waiting staff put us off having pudding and coffees. Such a shame really x

This is an old public house which serves food. Whilst we all had a good time and the majority of the food was nice with a few exceptions, the Beef was a little tough, the vegetables were not very hot and the gravy was luke warm. On the drinks side one of our beers had to be returned as it was cloudy and the diet coke was flat These should not put you off as the service was excellent and the remaining foods were good

Please if you do nothing else please go to this pub, it’s amazing and so friendly, Pauline is a star x

Really picturesque pub. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Waitress was really lovely but on her own, so service was a bit slow. Worked for us as we weren't in any hurry but would have been frustrating if you had somewhere to be....

Would have been 5 stars across the board except: Served 250ml of wine when asked for 125ml. Changed it to 125ml with a smile but still charged for 250 ml. Asked for 10, 20, or 30 % tip on top of 10% service charge.

Staff were very good but as regular visitors for meals this was very poor this time as this was pie day and the pastry was very hard and not enjoyable.

Visited this lovely pub today after going to a local pumpkin farm. Pub had lovely atmosphere, food was delicious and staff very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area.

Delicious food, we had the roast , pork and turkey with a side of cauliflower cheese. Could have done with being a bit hotter, maybe heat the plates. Dessert was pineapple and rum upside down cake and Eton mess. The Eton mess was made with blackberry and blackcurrant and it was fantastic. The berries were a nice sharp contrast to the meringue and cream. Long wait for dessert but it was worth the wait

Food and service were good but bloody flies and wasps didn't make it a great experience. Needs air con and the windows closed maybe.

We always enjoy our food here especially the two for one fish on Wednesdays.

First time visiting with daughter in law and granddaughters. We were welcomed by friendly staff. The place has a lovely warm feel to it. So well decorated to give this feel of home. The staff are polite and very helpful. Our food looked and was delicious. We will be returning with other members of our large family for Sunday lunch.

Loverly pub with great food and well kept ale. The only fault was not being acknowledged when waiting at the bar to get served, even when they finished serving another customer and I was the only one waiting!

Dropped in on the way home and pleased to get a free table. 2 for 1 steak night was a bonus. Everything was very good, although the steaks were a bit overdone for our taste.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting The Axe & Compass for the first time, and let me tell you, it was an absolute treat. We made a reservation, which I'd recommend, and our table was all set up and snug in a cozy corner when we arrived. The service was top-notch, thanks to our waiter, who was a genuinely nice bloke. He was super attentive, polite, and even went out of his way to be friendly with my little daughter, giving her crayons to keep her entertained. Now, let's talk about the food. It was delicious! The presentation was on point, and every bite was bursting with flavor. I've got to give a special shout-out to the rack of ribs - hands down, the best I've ever had in a pub restaurant! I can't recommend it enough. In short, The Axe & Compass was a fantastic experience. The service and food were nothing short of brilliant, and we'll definitely be coming back for more. If you're planning a visit, I'd say make sure to book a table - you won't regret it! Overall, a well-deserved 5 stars.

I've heard so many good things about this place prior to visiting. It's such a picturesque pub, overlooking fields and beautifully lit up at night. All the staff are so welcoming and helpful. The food is elegantly placed and tastes delicious. I was very happy with my food and the service and will be back at some stage in the future 😋
