The Khayber in Newtownabbey

Would usually go here at least 1 Saturday each month. Food is fine hence the 2 stars. Place could do with a bit of a spring clean, but that is not the reason for 2 Stars. I am getting so fed up with places like this advertising they are open to a certain time, in this case 2pm, and when you turn up at 1.35pm, (if you can tell the time), that is 25 mins before 2pm only to be refused as they are closed or closing, I mean, what sort of service is that? Closing at 2pm means exactly that, or am I missing the point. Do they not want the business, is it too much of a problem? Maybe their clock was wrong!, I do not know and do not really care now another one struct of my list. I went here once a month at least, sometimes more, with another person, and also the odd takeaway so it is on average about £950 spend in a year that some other resturant will now get. A lesson for these places that advertise incorrect information, Business are closing all over, either advertise correctly , facilitate your clients or you could end up on the list of those businesses that are a victim of their own downfall!

Had butter lamb last weekend The lamb was like rubber absolutely disgusting.Im not one to complain have been getting out of the kyber for years.

Love this restaurant. Everytime I am visiting Belfast I make sure to go to The Khayber.

We haven’t been to the Khayber for a while as we live in Newtownards. Went tonight and it was so good. The chicken was so tender. The salad so fresh. The garlic naan bread is perfect. The new chairs were really comfy. Best Indian restaurant that we have been to. The service was great. Highly recommend this restaurant. Thank you. ☺️

No better Indian in the greater Belfast area. We travel 25 mins and least twice a month to visit. Have never had an average meal…. Always excellent. Friendly and professional staff.

Came here for a birthday dinner. Had the tandoori Mix starter. The main was chicken tikka masala and pilau rice with a keema naan bread. All of it was amazing

Absolutely love this place. Only go on very special occasions as I don't to get bored of eating there. Always get the chilli chicken tikka mandala and rice. Amazing!

Have been coming here for over 25 years and the food and service are excellent. The chef is so accomplished and we recently enjoyed Balti RaRa Ghoost and a tasty veggie curry. Staff on the floor are ultra professional and helpful and Moray epitomises this with his attention to detail and winsome manner. We’ll be back soon

I've always got takeaways from here..Decided to sit in a few days ago!! Decor was stunning! Service was outstanding 👏 Cannot wait to go back..Found the food even better than the takeaway as the meat was juicier ... Every ingredient was fresh...Couldn't fault the place....

We are regulars of the Khayber (take out and sit-in). This is a classic Indian restaurant done very well. The restaurant has a classic Indian decor that is kept to a high standard. The staff are very attentive and pleasant! Recommend the chicken tikka saag!

Was passing through the area and stopped here to sample their lunch menu. Three courses for around £15. The menu has a choice of 4 starters and about 10 mains, we opted for pakora, lamb Jalfrezi and lamb Punjabi masala with pilau rice. The food was gorgeous and portion sizes were generous, overall a lovely lunch.

Great Indian restaurant. Called in for the lunch special three courses at just under thirteen pounds. In my opinion it's a steal at this price. The food and service were top notch good sized portions as well. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Visited at lunchtime for the three course lunch special priced at just under thirteen pounds. I'm very happy with the food I received and the standard of service. Ordered chicken tikka starter followed by chicken tikka jalfrezi with pilau rice and ice cream for sweet. All the food was delicious and piping hot and the service was attentive and speedy. I will be returning soon and I think the lunch at this price is a steal. Portions were also of a decent size.

We've been to Khayber plenty of times and always enjoyed the food, never disappointed by the service either, Untill last week, when we decided to take my mother in law out ,the way the server treated us was disgusting! Once seated at a table for 4 my mother in law (keep in mind she's over 70 years old woman) decided to sit a bit closer to the radiator and her son, when the server seen it )older man with glasses) he threw the cutlery at her! I was ready to get up and leave but my partner said not to. Once the drinks arrived, they were slammed on the table. We asked if there was a problem but got no response, the food was decent at the time however the 3 of us felt a bit sick a few hours later. We've been coming to this place for ages and never had such an awful treatment. My mother in law was upset and we definitely won't be back. This gentleman should be spoken to about his manners and the lack of them!

Lovely Indian food ,with hotness to suit everyone's tastes.

Ordered a vegetable balti from here, which tasted like it had had half a jar of lime pickle in it to make it taste like a "Balti". No taste of coriander, which is the signature of Balti. Not even many vegetables. Just pickle.

I visited this restaurant last night & ordered chicken pardesi. When it arrived the waiter said chicken pasanda as he set it down & I pointed out it wasn't the meal I ordered. He then got the waiter who took the order who assured me it was pardesi. Pardesi is spicy ie 3 stars pasanda is mild. I ate the meal knowing it wasn't the right one. I then called the menu up on my phone which showed pardesi had mushrooms, green pepper & spinach. I again pointed this out to the waiter & only then did he admit it was not pardesi & removed it from the bill. He brought a glass of wine & apologised again which was fair enough but I can't stand how he tried to deceive me. He thought I was gullible enough to accept his explanation. All I wanted was him to apologise for the error when I first pointed it out & bring me the correct meal. Terrible customer service.

Tonight my partner & I visited the Khyber restaurant Glengormley Belfast. I ordered chicken tikka pardesi. When the waiter brought the food he said chicken pasanda. I said that was not what I ordered he said he would send over the waiter who took the order. When this guy came he said that it wasn't pasanda is was pardesi. The meal wasn't warm so we asked for it to be reheated. I ate the meal but realised it wasn't what I ordered as it was 3 stars ie medium hot & this was mild. I then called the waiter after calling the menu up on my phone & said my meal did not have spinach, mushrooms or green peppar as stated. He then apologised & said I was correct. He brought over a free glass of wine & said we would not be charged for my meal. I am very disappointed that they tried to deceive me by telling me it was what I ordered. They fact they thought I wouldn't catch on really infuriated me. He picked the wrong person. If you are in the wrong please admit it & fix it. That's all I wanted. Won't be going back.

Food itself was delicious. Let down however by the drinks, namely a £7 bottle of Kingfisher beer, which I can only assume was flown in from India specially. The other was a glass of Coke which was like a cinema style watered down version only worse. Flat and no taste. To their credit I raised this issue and coke was taken off the bill. A minor point was staff did not light the candles on the metal food trays and restaurant was very dark.

We usually love our Kyber takeaway - Not a good experience tonight. Naan bread - dry, cardboardesque… Korma - sauce tasted lovely but the chicken was dry and hard to eat. Disappointed 🥲🥲🥲

Regular patron of this restaurant and again booked as usual day before which they were very bullish that we did not but accommodated us..food was as always excellent but truly the service was terrible..most staff were very sharp and would not acknowledge a request when asked in fact I had to go to the bar twice to order drinks myself..this also happened to a party of 8 in the table next to us.no follow up as regards of extra drinks or desert menu or coffee ..worst of all was the constant berating by some male staff towards a young female member of staff who was in my opion doing all she could..this sickened our party and I mentioned it when paying the bill but was totally ignored I really don't think he was listening at all..not a good experience overall and unfortunately will not be back..

One meal good (chicken methi). One poor (tandoori mixed grill). Also left out part of the order. Charged us £29.40

I found a few chunks of chicken in my vegetarian curry. I told the manager and not even an apology. They could be doing the same with food intolerances. Said I could come and collect another one. Vegetarians please do not eat at this restaurant as they are lying that it is made meat free.

Excellent friendly staff, really nice food, the lunch menu is well priced, three full courses, not cut back or anything. Would very much recommend lunch and dinner to anyone looking for Indian food in the glengormley area. Better than the other offerings

This place has seriously gone downhill, had a king prawn balti with the most overcooked rubbery prawns ever. Asked for no onion in the balti, it came with onion. The chips were definitely reheated & the naan was slightly over done. All in all a very disappointing takeaway.

Came here for a midweek dinner. Was throughly thrilled with the food. So fresh. Very tasty. Exceeded my expectations. Had chicken dopiasa, dal, lovely sag paneer and amazing butter Nan. Highly recommend.

I went with my family here. We enjoyed it very much staff were amazing as our son has nut and egg allergies they made his safety a priority. Thank you for an amazing night.

Not all food came at the same time

I have been to the khayber many times over the years not so much recently. I had a meal with my wife last night and as alway we were presented with consistently good Indian food and the meat products are high quality. Highly recommended. 🏆

Went for the lunchtime special. Enjoyed it alot, but I notice the price has been increased by £1 and the chicken Tikka starter has been reduced from 3 pieces to two. Considering chicken is cheap to buy i felt that was unnecessary!

Good food and service but felt quite unsafe - staff not wearing masks and no social distancing in quite an enclosed space with no ventilation.

I hate leaving bad reviews , but if this is the best Indian Restaurant in Northern Ireland as one reviewer described it ? Then you need to get over the water and taste some decent curry . I am over here visiting family from England , having read the reviews i thought this is THE place . Alarms should have gone off when placing my largish take away order and being told it would be ready in 15 minutes ? We picked the order up from pleasant enough staff and whipped it HOME . What we found was very disappointing . The poppadoms were inedible , very stale , and obviously old . The onion relish was sour to taste , and they had forgotten the yogurt dip .Not a good start we couldn't eat the poppadoms and dips! Seriously inedible !! The curries we ordered were terrible the balti probably the best .The king prawns in the jalfrezi really small and overcooked . The Tandoori mixed grill was very disappointing , again some of meats i think had been hanging about a bit , nobody ate the lamb . There was a lot of it left on plates. The naans were well naans not great doughy not fresh . The best bit was probably the rice, we ended up fighting over the rice to fill our plates lol, but even then not great . They can boil rice though. There was a lot of left over food for the bin .We are not skin flints , but it wasn't cheap either . We eat curry in Birmingham England and i guess spoilt for choice finding good curry. We use the Viceroy in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter which is very comparable in price ( slightly high for brum ) the food is super fresh , with super fresh quality ingredients , specials of the day boards etc , delicious sit in or takeaway . This was incomparable sorry Khayber . I'm a regular visitor to the shores and have been planning to visit this restaurant for a for a while very disappointed . I'm perplexed how this place gets such good reviews. I've just read an article in about the history of this restaurant , the skill and knowledge of the chefs, quality of the ingredients etc i'm evn more perplexed.

The Khayber is very quick to get takeaway orders out. By the time I drive down the order is out ready for collection. Sitting in is comfortable with a great atmosphere. Most of the staff are very friendly and chat away Portion size is very good, the quality has remained good despite the price slowly creping up.

Awful. Have eaten at the Khyber several times over a number of years, but this was the first take away and it was awful. We bought for 3 adults, all the sauces tasted the same, balti dish was horrible, large chunks of semi cooked vegetables, bread did not taste freshly cooked, onion bhaji was took, best of the meal. Very disappointed.

Had a take away for 5 people got some of the food order wrong but rang them and they said they would give discount next time . THEY DID SO A BIG THANKYOU . and we will be back thanks again your food is OUTSTANDING.

I was at the khayber last night for a family meal and the food was beautiful. I personally had the chicken korma and enjoyed every bit of it!! My family agreed and also enjoyed all their food. The staff are always pleasant and very friendly. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for everyone 10/10!

I visited the kyber 2 weeks ago and was seated for an hour (order placed after 5 mins) before realising that the order had not been placed with the kitchen-myself and my wife got Upto leave and fair play they did not charge us for our drinks. As I am a fan of their food we ordered a take out tonight which I ruefully regret. Lamb biriani with a fairly hot curry-the vegetable curry was atrocious, no heat whatsoever with the consistency of slop-honestly the worst thing I have eaten in a long time. Put a bit of a downer on my Saturday night. Complained by email and got a very lack lustre apology. Poor to say the least. Would rather make myself a curry out of jar than darken their door again!

Authentic Indian cuisine, very friendly staff

Visited the khayber yesterday (05/09/20) with my husband and family. This is our favourite Indian restaurant in greater Belfast the food is absolutely beautiful with great service from the whole team especially the young waitress Aimee, always a smile on her face. We felt very safe with the precautions the restaurant has taken in regards to covid pandemic. Santizer on entry to the restaurant and also entry/exit to the toilets. We were given a choice of santized menus or to use QR menus placed on each table a very clever idea and one which I haven't seen in any other restaurant. We also noticed a number of tables taken out to try facilitate social distancing but obviously this can not be 100% guaranteed with such a busy restaurant. Well done the khayber for not only providing top class food and service but trying your best to look after your customers in what must be a trying and difficult time for the hospitality industry and one we are learning to adapt too.

Visited the Khyber on 29 August 2020 and it was as if there was no coronavirus pandemic. All tables were booked. No social distancing was in place and no staff member wore a mask or visor. Windows that could provide ventilation were closed and customers wandered freely to the bar and toilets, stopping to chat to friends at other tables. I've eaten here before and the food and experience was good. This however was horrifying and our party left without ordering food because we felt endangered.

A fantastic restaurant with delectable food and a warm, comforting atmosphere. I would recommend this to anyone who is a lover of Indian Cuisine - Great Food for a Great Price! However, wear a T-shirt when you go as it can be quite warm, especially if you are having spicy food!

Popular and long established Indian restaurant with superior service. Food quality is usually excellent in comparison to other places. On some occasions though, they have forgotten to add items, such as a portion of rice, to the takeaway order. They also don't deliver, collection only.

I have been going to the Khyber for about 20 years or more I have found the staff very friendly and pleasant .I love the food it's the very best Indian restaurant I have ever been to and I have tried lots that's why I go back time and time again . I love it and will highly recommend to all my friends and family well done Khayber.

We visited The Khayber last night without a booking and were seated within 5 minutes. The service from Mohammed and his team was excellent and the food as usual was excellent. The one thing that this restaurant has is consistency of the quality of food, its always first class. Its hard to recommend one particular dish as everything I have sampled at The Khayber is great. This restaurant is a must visit for lovers of Indian food.

Beautiful restaurant, staff were very friendly and helpful, menu offers a great choice of huge dishes including children's portions. Very well priced considering the quality and taste of the food definitely exceeds this! I can honestly say my mouth had an orgasm before I fell into a food coma in the car. Added bonus is that the restaurant also offers a takeaway menu. The Khayber is probably THE best Indian restaurant in N.Ireland and we will definitely be back

We called with no booking and were well received and seated right away, the food and service in here has been second to none for over the 20 years we've been coming here. I and we have dined in many Indian restaurants throughout Ireland, some of which were very good but not as good as here in glen gormley, beautiful tasty food. Back soon.
