3 stars because staff were pleasant and attentive but if not for them this would be 1 star for food. I had a couple of small plates and while the clues in the name, for £7 you do expect a starter size portion. However this turned out to be a blessing. Dreadful, overcooked and any ready meal would have out shone them. Clearly not made from scratch and very very unpleasant.

I visited here with family for the first time for a special occasion. A long wait at the door for a member of staff to come and greet us, so much so we just found our own table to sit at. We all had main meals, very bland and mediocre food, poor portion sizes, rubbish service. Music was far too loud we couldn't hear each other at the table so asked staff to turn down the music, it seemed they actually turned it up. After our unimpressed mains, we all had dessert. Most of the party had the pavlova, we all started laughing as soon as this came out, it was almost as if we ordered off the kids menu or this was actually made by a kid. The best part was there was a piece of macaroni in my dessert, how does that even happen! Seems all effort was put into the refurbishment/decor instead of good quality food and staff - avoid!

Had a wonderful meal on Sunday. The panko arancini was amazing and the red snapper melted in the mouth. They also do a Sunday roast which you can’t beat, the Yorkshire pudding is as good as my granny’s! The wine selection was small but perfect. We chose a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which was excellent value for money. The restaurant is lovely but if you want a traditional pub feel you can sit in the bar area which has an open fire. Will definitely be back.

Being a breakfast fan, but not a morning fan, the fact their breakfast/brunch menu is served til 3pm is brilliant I've had the cooked breakfast several times now, and it's been delicious. I've always been a big fan of the Houston Inn, unfortunately, it is now under new management and it's gone downhill. We have always had lovely meals there. I booked it today for my daughter and an elderly friend, who insisted she buy us Christmas lunch. But instead of a full menu, they offer more of a 'brunch'...ie cafe food. Drinks very limited. No nice wines offered. Just totally different experience and not one we would repeat. Not at this point. Although only about 3 tables being used, they also messed up the bill!! We did contact the duty manager, who was lovely and very apologetic. I had the fish and chips, which was tasty. So it wasn't a total disaster. They are going to have to work very hard at turning things around. It's a historic building, I would hate it to go under!

Would give a rating of less than one if it were possible. Waited 1.5 hours for food, when it arrived it became apparent we could have done better ourselves. Note to restaurant: sweet chilli dip is not salsa and guacamole ideally would have met an avocado in its life. Waiting staff were pleasant and did well despite the embarrassment they must feel when working with such a slow and incompetent kitchen.

We went with friends to celebrate the birth of their new granddaughter and had a table booked for 5pm.. We had our starters which were served fairly promptly and were good. We then sat for nearly an hour waiting for our mains before a young waitress came over to our table and said they there were having problems in the kitchen. There was a table of twelve people celebrating an anniversary and because three of them had ordered curries it seems they didn’t have any rice left for my husband’s curry!! After agreeing to have chips with his curry the waitress brought myself and my friend our pasta mains, which we had almost finished before our husbands got their mains; my husband’s curry was supposed to come with spicy onions but there were none on his plate, and the curry, costing nearly £16, had five smallish pieces of chicken in it. It was certainly not value for money. My friend’s husband had ordered a pizza for his main, apparently a house special, and it was the smallest pizza I have ever seen being served in a restaurant; it looked like a child’s pizza from a supermarket! We will definitely never ever be back. When considering where to go for the evening we thought we would stay local and support our local pub …how wrong were we? Lesson learned!! 😡

Service was abominable - seemed to be very little staff - and the waiting time for drinks and food was ridiculous, especially since we were the only ones in the place! To add insult to injury, a table who had arrived a while after us were served before us! Also, the food was hardly worth waiting for - and the place didn't get any busier while we were there. New booths in the bar area and tables making a fresh change from the old furniture that was there before. Kitchen closes at 1930 which I wasn't advised of when booking a table for 1930..not ideal. Went for Christmas dinner; terrible experience. Vegetarian option was not worth the money paid. Said it was come with a marmalade but when asked I was told it was inside the wellington and it had clearly evaporated the whole thing was bland and very dry. Staff were not not interested in making sure you were ok, no one asked if we wanted drinks, we had to stop waiting staff and ask; they didn't even bother to make up a drinks list some story involving printers - I'm sure they could have knocked a couple up on the home printer. Quite happy to take your 70 p/head a month in advance. I thought it was short staffed but when I looked to the bar area I saw that they were just hanging out. It was an hour between courses. The ladies toilets were a joke they couldn't even be bothered putting toilet roll in a holder so they were all wet from falling on the floor . One toilet was useable the rest were disgusting. You should hang your head.

Very sad to write about our experience on Christmas Day, service was poor, sat at the table 15/20 mins and starter was served, no drinks order had been taken at this point, starters finish and finally the 1st round of drinks served, sat with dirty dishes between meals for a very long time, food in general very disappointing, mash lumpy and all in all very plain for Xmas day, veg wasn’t even seasoned and none of the courses were particularly warm. We asked when booking for a high chair, no high chair was provided I had to ask twice for 1 and was given a broken and very unsafe high chair, I complained, it was replaced by another broken high chair!! I then had to begin to feed my 7 month old in her buggy!! Eventually when another family left we were give a working safe high chair! The wait between mains and dessert was lllllllloooooooonnnnnnnng! And again when we were finished had to ask for teas and coffees we were never offered , staff appeared to struggle to smile, let alone get in the Christmas spirit! Such a disappointing experience from a lovely little pub/restaurant not worth £70 a head and to be honest I feel we die some kind of refund!!

The Houston Inn as a building is first class. Excellent facilities. The staff are particularly pleasant, courteous and helpful. Sadly, the steak and ale pie was just warm when it arrived. It could have been fine but for that. By the time I was half way through eating, it had become a cool steak and ale pie. I have to say this dish was my second choice. I wanted haddock and chips. Alas, they serve chips with skin on. Now, boiled potatoes with skins are OK. Baked potatoes must be in the skin but, to me, fries with skins just strike me as cheapest possible on the plate. Advice to chefs everywhere - serve chips with skins on to folk who don't mind that but have fully prepared chips on offer for people who'd rather not have skins. My friends and I eat out every Friday. We look for new places to go. We won't be returning to Houston Inn very soon. Too bad!!

Had lunch at Steam Wheeler at Braehead today, at door got asked any allergies and given gf menu, got told waiter take order rather than order at bar, my son went for huge mixed grill...they confirmed have separate gf fryer so chips are safe, brought out separate ketchup for him and his meal had a wee allergen flag on it to reassure, food was lovely pub grub! He was too full but there was a choice of 5 gf puddings!!! Defo good for family meal, we had carvery which was lovely 😍 family with one coeliac it always hard to find nice easy food this was brill, our Waiter Thomas was brill so friendly as were all the staff, be back soon.

We just popped in for a drink before going to a gig round the corner. It has a nice feel to it inside like a wine bar. Modern decor. It was quite busy but still managed to get a seat. They have a function room upstairs that was heaving with people. They had a good DJ mixing tracks together. I could easily have settled in for the night. However, they do need to decorate the toilets to the same standard as the rest of the place. A few people were having food. It looked good but we didn't try.
