We came here for lunch, and fortunately we had a dry day as the car park is some distance, and the walk to the hotel is down a steepish incline which is not ideal for those ladies wearing high heels. The restaurant is beautiful with vaulted ceiling, the tables having ample space, and with delightful views across the North Downs. The food was exquisitely delicious and varied: everything we had was beautifully presented, and everyone enjoyed the different courses. The service, it has to be said, was a little ‘hesitant’, possibly down to the fact the restaurant were training new staff, although this wasn’t confirmed at the time. The bill was expensive, and despite the excellent food and setting, was considered exorbitant for what we ate and drank (aperitifs and a bottle of wine). It wasn’t what I would consider value for money … Overall, we had an enjoyable meal, but not sure we’d be rushing back anytime soon.

Wonderful view from the terrace where we had drinks, ( it was a very warm evening). Good service all round. The food in the Japanese restaurant was outstanding, this is the second time we have been. The big letdown was the price of the drinks, the cheapest glass of wine was £20. Most however were in the £40 to £60 per glass! The drinks came to more than the food.

The food was lovely. We are big fans of Japanese cuisine and this ticked many of the boxes. We both had the tasting menu which was beautifully presented. I would have liked a more Japanese pudding and this was the only disappointing part of the tasting menu. The service was very good and we had a lovely waitress from Lithuania and a charming and knowledgeable Italian sommelier/manager. I only mention their nationalities as I cant remember their names. The setting is wonderful and they had just opened the ice rink. There are some negatives but the biggest one is the price of the wine list - we are used to eating out in Michelin starred restaurants but I dont like being ripped off and I feel they are behind the times with their eye wateringly prices - minimum price for a glass of wine is £25 or £30!!! I would have liked to have seen a better value selection. I am aware they are aiming for the top notch bracket with deep pockets but even so.... I would not go back to eat until they change this. The other negative is the steep step which was unexpected leading to the loos and I think they had an unfortunate drain issue on the day we were there.

Went for dinner with my grandson on a Sunday evening and the whole experience was exceptional. Must admit the prices are not for the faint hearted if you have the tasting menu as we did but you don’t need to indulge yourself to that extent. The food was outstanding and the service very good

I brought my mother for a birthday lunch and booked the fixed price bento box menu (£45). I've been several times before as well as staying in the hotel and knew she'd love having lots of different things. When the menus came, it wasn't there. I had to ask separately which felt embarrassing and was told there wasn't one printed for us to read, but she could remember most of it. The choice of main was a poorer one than on the website (and what we'd had before on visits) - neither the black cod or beef were offered despite being offered on the online menu. Essentially we were made to feel "cheap" by ordering this, despite adding an extra dish, having multiple glasses of champagne and a bill about £220 for 2 for lunch! Outside of this our table had a stunning view and I greatly appreciated the buggy lift for my mother back to our car as she struggles to walk up a steep hill. The food is divine and we're thinking of returning to have the full tasting menu at dinner but I hope they start making all guests feel equally welcome

We came here as a guest of friends and the main room and outside terrace were full. Not bad for a Saturday in August. Many folks were clearly staying at the country house which is an impressive building as are the grounds. The bar is worth a visit just to sit on the sofa's and read the room. Tasting menu was delightful and we had our first taste of Kentish ants (or ants from Kent - not quite sure which is right). This is clearly a place to splurge and have a blow -out celebration. You'll know when the time is right.

Went for lunch and food was fantastic…but the staff needs more training. This was not your average lunch as we paid £243 for tasting menu and wine for two. There are expectations when it comes to paying that kind money. Pity the hotel was beautiful.

Poorly qualified personnel for the quality food they serve. Massive disconnect from my point of view. We booked this place for my wife’s birthday and i clearly told them so. After ordering drinks we were served with 3 but not my wife’s kir royal. Waited for a minute and then asked them where it was….got it in another 5 minutes. They either forgot or didn’t record and even didn’t manage to check… as it would have happened in a proper place Didn’t manage to finish going through the menu asked to come back in few minutes. Nobody came back and i had to ask them to come finally…. After we made our oder another waiter came back to us saying that one of the items on the menu was out…..i can’t imagine that in any comparable place waiters didn’t no the only one item on stop-list… We clearly said we would like to share everything. When were served the first one that was supposed to share anyway and after waiting few minutes i asked fro plates…. After finishing the deserts and i asked for the bill and was handed that over. After that they brought a very nice chocolate cake saying “happy birthday” for my wife…it was extremely clear we had been finished with food at that point in time so they either forgot to bring it on time or whatever but we only laughed at that point of time about that…. Bottom line - great quality food and absolutely non-qualified staff which for the restaurant of their aspiration and pricing (700gbp) is not competitive to me - very unlikely we are to come back

We went to the House for my husband’s birthday treat last night. The food was exquisite and the experience is very, very special. The setting and atmosphere of the House is very elegant and quite unique - and the staff are attentive, but relaxed and super friendly. I would definitely recommend for a special occasion if you want to sample beautiful Japanese food. We will be back!

Okay so let’s start with the elephant in the room… Yes it is a Japanese restaurant in a classic British building! And yes it is priced like it has Michelin stars. My wife and I are lucky enough to say that we have been to Japan a couple of times, and we have eaten in many of London’s prestigious Japanese restaurants…. However… I can honestly say that this is the best Japanese dinner we have had! What a wonderful taste sensation this is! Whilst a heavy Japanese influence is obviously throughout the whole dinner, presenting some fine Japanese delicacies and flavours. It caters very well for the western taste but brings together some very interesting concepts and presentation We ordered the seasonal taster menu starting with urchin and noddles made from squid, and followed by popcorn shrimp. What then followed was a cooker master class with seafood broth served in a large shell to slurp from. From a presentation point of the assortment of starters was beautifully presented in a basket style hamper, with tuna tartare, seaweed, keta with truffle, tofu, tuna sashimi with white truffle and finally their signature dish - sea bream with crispy ants. Yes i said ants. And they were citrusly delicious. Followed by nigiri which had the chunkiest and fleshy eel. Wowsers. Very impressive. After that gastronomic bombshell, I can’t believe I am now following that synopsis with this. What follow was class and inspiring. Monkfish covered in the crispy kombu with a soya and teriyaki soup was so yummy I literally lifted the bowel to see it off! The lamb cutlets in spicy (almost Korean style) sauce was the most tender lamb I have ever eaten. Sensational. Our finale was homage to their gardens vs Japan, with bees was, honey, pollon and yuzu flavouring this yoghurty concoction. However it was the perfecting ending to our cherry blossom extravaganza. This dinner was outstanding. Sensational. Unexpected. Japenese. You don’t need to go to Japan anymore. Just visit this restaurant. But don’t forget your credit card!

The Japanese Grill probably serves the best food for quite some distance. It’s priced like it’s got two Michelin stars, but it hasn’t and it won’t. We went for the full tasting menu with the wine flight. Every dish was exquisitely prepared, with carefully chosen wines. I didn’t particularly appreciate being served sake with a couple of the courses, but that’s just my opinion. The selection of 5 dishes that arrived in a wooden box presumably was supposed to be “theatre”, but it was just kitsch (again, opinions may differ). One of them was seasoned with ants, which was a new one on me. But, the staff need some training. It was quite embarrassing when we asked questions about the food they couldn’t answer, because they had never tasted it. They are surrounded by people paying £300 a head for a meal and yet they had never tasted it! That’s poor training and even poorer treatment. And please turn off the loop of Neville Chamberlain’s declaration of war in the toilets. That’s just weird.

Stunning setting, with outstanding food and service. We had a pre-dinner cocktail in Sir Franks Bar and then enjoyed the tasking menu, which I would highly recommend. A real treat, and fabulous to have somewhere like this outside of Central London.

I found The Japanese Grill in the House at BeaverBrook in a random pick from the Michelin guide. I booked it for my husband’s birthday meal at relatively late notice and it was wonderful. The drive in was beautiful, the car was valet parked, we were met and shown to the bar for a drink. The bar staff were polite, friendly and a credit to the hotel and once we gave our name it was remembered. Once we finished our drinks we were shown to our table (late booking meant eating in an anti room which I’d been warned about on booking) but it was absolutely fine. We had the tasting menu, my husband had the wine flight too. It was outstanding! The waiting staff were friendly but not too chatty, and very knowledgeable. The food was absolutely divine and just kept coming. We were not hurried and everything was relaxed although they were fully booked. Yes it was expensive, but it’s a treat and worth every penny! We’ll be back in a heart beat!

Just had Xmas lunch. It was outstanding, it was a fusion meal with Japanese starters and English main course and desert. Must say the Japanese courses could not be bettered the English ones amusingly could manage a modest improvement however the English Xmas pudding was also excellent overall a first class experience. The location/venue is delightful.

And it really was. The location is outstanding and the food is memorable. Really first class. The only slight drawbacks are the access to the loos, which is a little like climbing Mont Blanc and the service which although very friendly is not up to the price point or the quality of the venue or the food. Don’t think this is due to the abilities of the staff which I am sure is excellent but a lack of effective supervision. In spite of this we will certainly be going back.

The food was amazing - expect to pay London West end prices. Sadly they lack the silver service quality that goes with that price tag.We where only three tables yet our food arrived before the wine, poor poor service.Sadly the service let them down.We are still waiting 6 months later for the events planner to call or email us back - which is incredibly poor.

Had hoped for an authentic Japanese food experience, but there was nothing really Japanese about this meal. Ridiculiously expensive (set meal £90 or £120!) for a load of overworked and fussy bits that you'd struggle to see let alone recognise - and not a sliver of tuna in sight. Staff appeared attentive, but hopeless really, missing empty glasses, filling them with the wrong stuff and not noticing that the ice tray plonked on the end of the table slowly melting across the table until it soaked a guests' arm necessitating their jacked being hung near the fire to dry. No real apology - you'd have thought even a complimentary coffee would have been in order. If you've ever been to Japan, you'd wonder if the chef had.The whole expeience was ridiclious; from not allowing you to park your car, to collecting a few guests coats, but missing others and insisting on an arrival time and then ignoring it themselves. Even the waitress could only explain the dishes in terms of what she liked (who cares) and just pressurised us to order more "as the portions were really small". At least she was right about that, but from the prices you'd think they'd offer at least some value for money. We all went home hungry. Best avoided
