Beautiful fish and chips. Good portion size. Fish was really good. Kids enjoyed their meals. Great service. Reasonably priced.

Welcome and friendly staff, good tasting chips with fast service. Only problem was small portions, luckily I ordered two, but maybe I’m just greedy. Highly recommend!

Was going to use their restaurant but it had closed so bought take away. I could smell old cooking fat as soon as I opened the container. The fish, well if you could call it that, was all batter, very little fish. The chips were not much better. Most of mine went in the bin.

Me and my husband had a very good supper here. My husband a fish fan had fish chips and mushy peas, I had chicken and chips. Both good value for money. Nice, fresh and hot. Service was excellent, very friendly and made sure we had all we needed to enjoy our meals. Highly recommend.

Went in for sausage and chips sat down and we were all told to leave or pay extra. Shocking. The place was empty. Won't ever be going there again ever again. Surprised place still there. He should close and take up a factory job with contact with the general public. Crack on!

Just stopped off to feed the family at The Horseshoe Fish & Chip Restaurant in Kirby Stephen. We wanted Fish & Chips x3 and any kid meals x2 they could provide, the young lady behind the counter was pleasant and efficient, but told me that they did not do any kid meals. I decided to opt for one more Fish & Chip and I asked whether that could be cut in half and placed in two separate trays - the young lady kindly consented to that! The portions looked quite small as the lady put vinegar and salted all the meals, but that wasn't a real problem, although at £5.60, I have had more for my money! What was a problem though was the scrappy amount of fish inside the chewy batter, it certainly wasn't an enjoyable fish experience, all meals was the same as well. On the plus side, the chips were very good and also the mushy peas too. Such a shame the fish couldn't have been up to the same standard.

There was a jolly and rollicking time, in the early Sixties (and I do know about this, because I lived high on the moors, in a remote Inn; and folk would bring us tales of the merry Goings-On!) when Kirkby Stephen kept its lights on, well into the early morning hours. "Why?" you may ask. Well, that was when the Blackpool and Morecambe coaches would be winging their way back, after even more jollier Outings. The Fish & Chip Cafes did very good business; and an enterprising local business man installed a Milk Machine, outside his shop: and that did great business, also. The Horseshoe restaurant was, already a very popular place to feed those masses. As it fed me, on Christmas Eve,in the late 1980's,just a few weeks after I'd bought an old house, desperate for renovation, just down the road. I'd bought a cheap black and white television set, to entertain me, but the signal wasn't all that good. So it was, I sat on various cushions (on a bare floor) in front of a Calor gas heater, eating the fish and chip supper I'd just got from the Horseshoe Cafe, watching "Ben Hur," starring Charlton Heston. The chariot race kept disappearing sideways, as the signal veered, but that was (in retrospect) a memorable and cheerful Christmas.I was thinking of this, as a friend and me enjoyed a truly tasty supper, in July, at The Horseshoe Cafe. Do give it a try: you won't be sorry!

This is a tale from the past, when I was beginning a new life in Kirkby Stephen; and this, my first Christmas in a house with twelve rooms; and all needing restoration. With bare walls and a bare floor (and the hearth awaiting the delivery of an antique mantelpiece) I'd bought a calor gas heater, to keep me cosy; and a black and white television set, for economy's sake and entertainment. I had a camper stove on a table in the kitchen; my sole means of cooking; and was wondering what to have for my supper. Wandering around the town, shopping for tins of meat, milk and bread, pickles and Christmas cake I'd noticed that the Horseshoe cafe was open for business. So it was, I'd sat in an old armchair (wrapped in a blanket) eating fish and chips for my supper; and watching an old movie: 'Ben Hur,' starring Charlton Heston. The signal wasn't very good, and the pictures kept sliding sideways-making the Chariot race even more exciting- but I can honestly say, that was one of the best Christmases I've ever had-with so much before me. I recently returned to the town (one of my Memory Lane visits) with a friend, and we had fish and chips in the Horseshoe Cafe. They are still as tasty, with as good a batter as will suit the most critical, as they ever were. There was a time( long gone) when excursion coaches ruled the world, and the town catered for midnight returns from Blackpool and Morecambe. These were heydays for fish and chip cafes along their routes but it's good to see that they are holding their own amongst so many other kinds of cuisines. That famous walker, Mr Wainwright passed through. he may well have sampled The Horseshoe Cafe, although they don't make a song and a dance about it! Do not miss; and make your own Memory

Popped into the Morrisons cafe, for a spot of lunch before travelling home. I selected the ultimate fish and chips, the picture showed a piece of fish that hung over the sides at both ends of the plate, with stacks of chips. My wife asked if I would like bread and butter as well, I replied no looking at the size of that fish it would just be pure greed, My wife ordered the smaller portion for herself. When it arrived my portion of fish sat comfortably on the plate not even touching the sides of it. The chips were a child's portion at best. My wife's was served up on what can only described as a side plate, and it didn't even fill that. Probably the last time I will consider thinking about popping in there, a shame as we are regularly in Penrith, I would say 4-5 days a month.

Upon entering it was a very small space, 2 customers waiting the cashier was very blunt when I walked in and said "YES" I had no time to look at the menu, so I just ordered 2 fish and chips and 2 jumbo sausage with 1 chips, Its been a while since I have been to a chip shop but this came to almost £35 which is total daylight robbery. They tasted ok but nothing special. Overall I wouldn't rush to return

Stopped for a late lunch so it was fairly quiet. We all had cheese toasties and coffee. The food came quickly and was freshly made, hot and tasty. The coffee was prepared quickly and bought to our table. Nice atmosphere. Will come again. Thank you.
