This has been a long-term haunt of mine, from when it was the Laughing Cavalier in the late 90's, to it's short stint as the Oliver Cromwell, through the many years it was superbly run by the Bartsch family as the Horse and Plough, until now where it is owned by Castle Rock. It's always my first pub of choice when looking for a pint of something decent in Bingham. Cosy in the winter and nice to sit outside in the summer in their new(ish) beer garden. It's perhaps not as well aesthetically kept as it was in the Bartsch days; the place was always immaculate and a lot of effort was put into dressing it up into a beautiful pub. Now it is starting to show its age in places, namely the outdoor gazebo, which is in DESPERATE need a new canopy, but, the range of beer is fantastic and what you'd expect from Castle Rock. For me, you can't go wrong with a Harvest Pale Ale!

Amazing place & really awesome staff. Super friendly & always a pleasure to visit! The manager Rosie is always there and welcomes you with a friendly face. You kinda feel like you popping home to visit the family. Rosie does a quiz every week which is great and there’s so much more there! Loads of events, a pool table, real ale and a great selection of alcohol. we’ll tbh I’d say it’s one of the best pubs around & so worth a visit.

Misleading photograph. Bar staff knowledgeable and accommodating. Great selection of beers and drinks. Interior has lost its individual appeal and charm since attempting to be a sports bar. However this move is understandable following the pandemic. This is a very masculine place to drink. It almost feesl like drinking in someones unfinished extension. However despite this it is a nice, friendly place to drink in Bingham.

We used to be big fans of the fox and crown when it was open and it is a shame this one isn’t a bit closer as we would visit more often. Very nice pub, friendly staff and good environment for the football. Shame about the very sunburnt customer who was being quite unpleasant to staff as we were stood ordering a cider but after he left it was back to a nice atmosphere. I came here a few years back around 3/4…I used to come in quite a lot until I moved from Bingham I remember Olivia and Georgia so well they were always upstairs in the restaurant serving food running up and down the stairs with drinks the chef mark served was incredible!! The bar staff I remember Issac Conor Matt Dan Craig Georgina and joe I absolutely loved them always open for a lovely chat!! I did find I think her name was Rebecca or becca quite high class and stuck up? I was sat at the bar one time and Rebecca was bossing Olivia and Georgia around asif she was the manager? She always put on this silly voice like she was a child? I’m glad she’s gone!!! The rest of the staff who I named are no longer here☹️My visit recently was just awful the staff aren’t bothered about having a decent conversation? The blonde manager I think her name is Rosie she’s just appalling her attitude is vile she doesn’t know how to run a bar it’s not even a restaurant anymore from what I’ve been told that haven’t had a chef for 3 years this place use to serve incredible food! The place is so run down and they need to get rid of that rude manager and never let that silly Rebecca girl back! Dan brown was amazing as a manager he always had the time of day for a chat with anyone I say bring him and all the old staff back and get that pub back to its amazing self! The place is chaos!

This used to be the best pub in Bingham and one I really enjoyed visiting, but now it seems to be run by rude, inexperienced young staff who think they have the right to talk to customers like dirt and refuse to serve them for no good reason. It's a real shame, as Castle Rock establishments, whilst not being the cheapest (this place certainly isn't cheap) are usually at least friendly and welcoming. I'll stick to drinking in The Wheatsheaf and The White Lion from now on, where they serve you with a smile. I did consider complaining to the Castle Rock headquarters, regarding my experience at The Horse & Plough, but decided it wasn't worth the effort. I'm happy to simply vote with my feet.

It had been more than a year since I last visited the Horse & Plough so it was great to have the opportunity to return with a friend for a couple of beers. To show there is two sides to the 'HUH a Shandy' story this is the different experience when I visited the same pub the following day to get the pub owners details. After being insulted by 'HUH a shandy..') and then being asked to leave after I suggested she make the non offensive drink(very refreshing no question) as I politely requested, I returned the following day to get the pub owners details. To my relief 'HUH a Shandy' was not there. I told Connor the supervisor about my shandy experience and he was visibly shocked about me being asked to leave(by the way, I was completely sober during my shandy manageress experience, and conscious of being a visitor to a small town) and offered an apology. I said it is not your bad behaviour to apologise for but I was relieved that he was understanding, professional and mature. Hope in the future had returned. This flippant bad treatment of males by women is becoming alarmingly common and it is damaging. My behaviour with the blonde manageress was 9.9/10 polite(In my world a 10 means you are not improving) until she decided to randomly pull the carpet from under my feet then I offered some reasonably descriptive choice words about her behaviour which the great actor that she is was surprised that I would be bold enough to say. Think Bart and Lisa phoning Mo. The lesson learned. Visit the pub when Connor is supervising if you want a professional, safe, comfortable experience. Visit the pub when the manageress is working then be prepared. Lastly a shandy joke. What do you call a blonde barmaid who deliberately botches a Shandy. Shondy Remember Shandy lives matters

Visitor walks into a bar. Gets ignored. Finally blonde manageress asks what I want. Shandy thanks half lemonade. HUH a shandy she Insults. Make it with a smile I offer. Quarter shandy she makes. I say is there a problem knowing full well there is. With venom she says you can leave. Bewildered I say why. Leave. I leave return a minute later and say Why what have I done. Leave. I offer her a behavioural assessment choicely and leave. Where is the redress here. Castle Rock brewery who own the Horse and Plough was contacted by myself and I sent an email to Mr Colin Wilde the managing director with no reply as yet. She should be fired immediately and if the latest review is anything to go by this new manageress is only going to bring discord and ill will to a pub that from previous reviews was a once warmly regarded and good influence on community spirit. One bad apple especially one whose currency is guile, rancour and malice could infect more than just the Horse and Plough, the damage could be more widespread for a moreover contented Bingham village that I experienced.

I visited the Horse and Plough with my folks for lunch on a quiet Monday lunchtime. We enquired about the vegan menu and the man covering the bar immediately went to check with the chef what was available. My dad also asked for a soya cappuccino and the staff member said he’d never made this before but would try, my dad said it tasted great! All of us went for the moving mountains burger but my mum didn’t want the fries so they kindly swapped these for a big bowl of seasonal veggies instead. Can’t argue with the 2 for 1 price on the meals but from the four of us only one meal was acceptable. Two were disappointing and one of us found their meal inedible and therefore returned it uneaten. The Sunday roast was excellent - all the usual trimmings and, which is unusual, really good gravy that showed the kitchens knew their job. Everything you could want in a village pub and makes it worth a visit to Bingham just to go to this friendly hostelry. Brilliant selection of well-kept ales and craft options too; Castle Rock's Harvest Pale and Preservation are regulars with room for at least 6 guests. All this is complemented by an excellent food menu which ranges from pub classics to more modern fare. There's a more formal restaurant upstairs but food is served in the pub itself too. Good wine list and a fine range of spirits too. The interior is basically untouched and the better for it with what looks like the original flagstone flooring and solid wood bar and seating. It's a real gem of a pub and I hope it remains that way.
