Found this superb pub hidden in Redbourn and had a Sunday roast. The food is amazing and so well cooked. Friendly staff and a really lovely atmosphere with an open fire and great beer on offer. As far as a traditional Sunday roast, you won’t find better and we will definitely be heading back. We wish we had found this sooner.

We recently arranged to stop at the Hollybush for lunch with our walking club, the perfect location half way along our Harpenden to Hemel walk along the Nickey Line (disused railway). We emailed a month or so beforehand, expecting a group of 20-25 and got a prompt response from Gordon the landlord, acknowledging our booking. (in fact we had booked last year, then had to postpone our walk; but this was no problem). We emailed our meal choices 5 days before, again no problem. And when two people had to cancel as unwell the day before, we let Gordon know. When we arrived exactly at the time we planned, we were shown where a table had been set for our slightly reduced group of 12. The group ordered their drinks at the bar, with no hassle to pay for meals up front, as the staff just wanted to let the kitchen know that we were there so they could get our meals ready. Needless to say the meals all appeared relatively quickly, with no dramas and we all settled down to eat. At the end of the meal we all paid separately for our meals, with them being taken off the “tab” on the till and (other than one drink someone forgot they had bought for someone else) all bills were paid with no complications. The comments received from my group in the days after our walk included “a perfect pub for lunch” and “top choice of pub”. We will definitely be back next time we do this walk. Thanks to Gordon and the Hollybush team.

The home cooked food was amazing, and hospitality was second to none! (I do recommend the lamb and leek pie is a must and apple crumble if you can). Would definitely recommend this place and I would definitely return. 10/10!

Myself and my family went here on Father’s Day for a Sunday roast, and I can honestly say this was the worst roast I have ever had. It looked like a Birdseye frozen roast and tasted even worse - I think you’d get a better meal in hospital. The service was terrible, we complained that the food was extremely salty (as all 7 of us agreed) to be told they’ve never received a complaint like this and they infect do not use salt - which was a complete lie. I physically could not finish the food and was not even offered an alternative. To top it off, we had to pay for the whole bill even though 4 of us didn’t eat. I would completely avoid this dingy, horrible pub and go elsewhere.

Great food as always. Great friendly atmosphere. It’s a shame about the ‘party’ that decided to complain, about the food being salty half way through eating it. If you need to complain there are ways to do so, which do not involve calling the waitress a liar and raising your voices for everyone to hear. Some members of your party looked embarrassed Also lying about not getting money off the bill on the review - just not on.

We went for Sunday lunch and they had a sensible option of regular or small Portions. Two of our party had small portions which were more than adequate. The roasts were excellent and choice of four meats as well as alternatives. Vegetables were perfectly cooked and the cherry waffle dessert was a winner

Our walking group booking at another Redbourn pub was not honoured, so we rang The Hollybush and they were able to accommodate us for the following day. What a stroke of luck - it is a charming pub with plenty of parking. We handed in our order for 15 people before setting out on our walk, and our food came out minutes after we returned and sat down, and was home made and tasty, all at a reasonable price. Gordon, the landlord, and all the staff were pleasant and helpful and we will certainly return.

Lovely country pub set in amazing surroundings... however I was disappointed when I saw a member of staff drunk and what appeared to be picking on a lovely young lady, this behaviour should never be tolerated! Having tried three establishments in the area, without luck, we came upon this beautiful village pub. Our quest was to find good ale and fine food. We were relieved to discover that a lunch menu wa being served with some choice ales on pump. The bar staff were very friendly but apparently new, about a week, and it could be seen in the way they were serving cask ale, not lifting the pint glass to the pump. Ice-cream cone comes to mind. This can of course be forgiven, but when the cask had obviously come to an end, the staff member topped up from the handle situated in the other bar. The pint looked great and I sat down to enjoy, with my collegue naturally chosing another ale. Unfortunately, the new member of bar staff had not been told that the other line had cleaning fluid in it, so with my keen first gulps of the ale, so I too had chemicals to swallow. It was not pleasant. They did immediately replace if with another ale which was in perfect condition, and apologised. We then looked at the menu and we both chose Ribeye Steak. Ten minutes or so later we were told that they had no Ribeye, so I chose the homemade curry and my colleage, the special of the day, Chicken, leak and bacon pie. Ten minutes later I was told that they couldn't serve the curry as they had no rice. I therefore also chose (my third choice) the special. The pie made up for the mistakes early and was beautifully made with perfect pastry. What a pity for the menu and ale mix-up. It is a characterful public house, a lovely atmosphere and friendly hosts. I would like to have marked higher, and despite what happened, I will likely revisit in the new year.

My friend and fellow walker suggested this pub and we made a booking before going on our walk. We returned famished and both ordered scampi and chips in a basket. I expected to get a small wire basket with a few chips. However, this was not the case. There was quite a large portion. The chips were extremely hot and chunky. To my dismay I was unable to finish them. We ordered the brownie. Gordon the owner said we had made the best choice. Oh my gosh. It was heavenly. To die for. I am not normally a brownie lover but I'd had my fill of crumbles so decided to go for an alternative and so glad I did. It was quite a small pub but welcoming and nothing felt like too much trouble. Our chips and scampi with our pudding only cost £15 so it was a bargain. Sorry Gordon, my only gripe, and it's a personal choice, I really hate to be around animals when I am eating. However, I know that most places are advertising themselves as pet friendly now. It's just not for me. Other than that, great food and great personal service.

Have never been here before but took my father for lunch - recently been diagnosed with dementia and now in residential care. We went for a walk and came across the pub. The landlord and staff were just lovely - so kind and accommodating, nothing was too much bother. Service was great and the food nice and good value for money - soup, sandwiches and baguettes and apple crumble and ice cream. It’s also dog friendly and there was a live jazz band playing. The pub is cosy and authentic and seemed very busy for a Wednesday lunchtime. Will definitely recommend and visit again

Nice food as usual, but were subjected to the insufferable sounds of Lewis Capaldi, the same 4 or so songs (hard to tell, they all sound identical) on repeat for 2 hours which was quite frankly soul destroying. Considering the inside of the pub was practically empty, maybe worth just turning the music off? Who exactly is it benefiting? Also the service was incredibly slow. Clearly more attention was being given to the people outside. Had to ask for the dessert menu twice, ordered a dessert and a pint, waited for well over half an hour before we had enough and just asked for the bill.Rather than any apology, were told "I've managed to cancel the pudding before they started making it", or words to that effect, like that was what I was most concerned about, rather than the fact I had by that point wasted an hour of my afternoon. Paid, left, won't be back. Shame.

Not only does this pub have a rich history, it also still encapsulates the traditional aura of a genuine English pub.Good selection of ales and lager, wine list is also pretty extensive (recommend the Merlot).Food is traditional fare (great homemade pies) and if you want a game of darts or the football's on, there's a games room fully equipped next to the car park. So, you can have a relaxing drink, traditional pub food and take in the atmosphere in the main building. Typical country pub environment and not spoilt by modern enhancements. I originally tried the breakfast as a trial to booking an evening meal there which I will now do.

Often have a drink here but this was only second time we have eaten. Decided at the last minute to go out to eat. The Hollybush was packed but we were lucky enough to get one of the last tables. Husband had stacked BBQ chicken and I had chilli with rice. Both dishes home cooked and were served quickly. Very enjoyable meal made even better by range of real ales. Well worth a visit for a drink or a meal!

We visited this pub in March on a sunny day and had a great time. It's a lovely pub with a good selection of beers and a really nice garden that catches the sunshine. Highly recommended

Went today for the first time (12/03/2017) for lunch with a friend. We picked this venue because we wanted somewhere different and it looks lovely from the outside. We ordered 2 roast dinners and drinks, staff were very friendly and food arrived in a timely fashion. I have to say, I've eaten a lot of roast dinners in pubs but this is by far the best yet. Excellent portions and crispy roast potatoes. We will going back & I definitely recommend.

In the last year I moved just up the road from The Hollybush and found myself there most Friday afternoons whenever it's was sunny last year. Unfortunately, until now I haven't really had the chance to return since the pub has changed its management. Luckily, my family and I weren't up for cooking this evening and instead we decided to head to down the Hollybush for some food. I had heard there was a new menu and we were keen to try it out. Even my boyfriend who is a 'careful' eater enjoyed the chilli and caramelised onions that were mixed within his burger (and that's saying a lot). The staff in the restaurant area are incredibly friendly and the food was so tasty there wasn't an unfinished plate on our table. We will definitely be returning more often and we were silly not to try it sooner!I highly recommend this friendly, welcoming and delightful pub to anyone who enjoys good food and a cosy environment.

My husband and I were joined by a group of friends and we had a thoroughly good evening in the Hollybush. The food was served very promptly and was extremely enjoyable. Good quality food and good value seems to be the theme here and we are certainly looking forward to another visit which will be very soon.well done.

We popped in to The Hollybush for a midweek meal. The fire was lit and very welcoming. The staff are friendly, helpful and are happy to chat with all customers. The food was great and good value for money. The staff were happy to add extras to substitute menu items within reason. Definitely recommended and thanks to the landlord and his staff for a lovely evening.

Lovely country pub with good hearty food. Stayed for lunch after smelling the freshly made pork and cider hotpot and wasn't disappointed. It was tasty, filling and fairly priced. A friend and I had only popped in for a quick drink whilst in Redbourn on an errand but having spent a relaxing hour in the company of the landlord and his beautiful 4-legged friend I would definitely make the trip back to this pub.

Our walking party of ten had pre-booked light lunches from the menu. There were only three or four other customers so it wasn't as though the kitchen was busy, but the overall quality of our food was very disappointing. One sandwich order had the wrong filling; another described as BBQ'd chicken was chicken with BBQ sauce. A baguette had been 'cooked/heated' until it was rock hard, a bowl of soup was so small the contents wouldn't have filled a coffee mug and was served with white sliced bread and pre-packaged butter. The chilli jacket potato was also small with an tough skin. The side salads came without any dressing and all condiments were pre-packaged. However, the staff were pleasant but when the offer of a free pudding was declined by the baguette eater the staff seemed to lose interest and no-one came to take our coffee order - so we left - having been asked to pay up front before the food arrived! This was an opportunity for the fairly new pub owners to go the 'extra mile' to encourage repeat business but we felt that they had skimped on the ingredients and I, for one, will not be going back or recommending this pub to my friends. I don't think it's a case of the chef having a bad day. It costs very little to use a generous soup bowl, use proper BBQ'd chicken and a larger, moist jacket potato with a dollop of sour cream on the chilli.

Pub has recently changed management, thought we give it a try. Called in for lunch, was not disappointed. Food cooked to order, indeed mostly made on the premises. Chicken strips and breaded garlic mushrooms as starters. Understand the mushrooms are breaded in house, probably the chicken strips were as well. Followed by ham, eggs and chips. Two large slices of ham, two fried eggs (no grease or oil in sight) thick cut chips (again no visible fat). The pub itself dates back to the 1600's, open fire, lots of beams, lots of ambience. If your thinking of lunch out, The Hollybush is well worth the trip.

The Engineer is my goto pub when I am in Harpenden. They are a very nice car park, and although the area is perfectly safe, it is nice to leave your car safe. I entered the bar to a friendly welcome and was shown to a nice table in minutes. A drink was ordered and delivered quickly, and I was given the list of the day’s specials, all of which sounded good but I had my heart set on more standard fare. I ordered the burger and chips and very shortly after a nicely decorated plate appeared. The burger was well cooked but succulent, the chips crispy and hot; add tomato sauce and it was heaven on a plate. At some point a member of staff appeared to check everything was ok and got a thumbs up. A few minutes after I had finished, the plate was removed and I was asked if I could be tempted with the dessert menu, everyone one knows there is always room for pudding. I ordered the brownie. When ordering the burger I had mentioned that I was intolerant to wheat, and staff automatically switched me to the gluten free brownie. To my delight it tasted wonderful (many don’t). Again the staff left me alone to enjoy my pudding. Shortly after I had scraped the plate clean, a member of staff asked if I wanted any else, I was happily full, so just the bill. The staff have mastered being there when you want them, otherwise leaving you alone to enjoy the meal. I am looking forward to my next visit to Harpenden so I have an excuse for lunch in the Engineer.

Ordered the fish and chips the server was very nice and professionally when it arrived it was all over cooked batter and little fish, when the server called over the Manager he took the food to the kitchen and the cook, according to the Manager said that it was fine. When I told the Manager that I didn't want it he showed no interest at all and his manner was that he couldn't care less and was not bothered, I have been going to this pub for years but will not be going back and will advise my friends to do the same.
