Popped in for lunch yesterday with my mum. A young man called Andy was working the bar and welcomed us like old friends, he was warm, funny and attentive without being in your face. I had a scrumptious steak and mum had the lentil and cauliflower curry, both were superb, thanks chef Calvin, we'll definitely be back.

The customer service in here is very bad, even though the place was pretty empty. It's a shame because the food is very nice. You will be treated as if you're in the wrong place when you arrive. The barmaid is very vacant and clearly can't be bothered! A out is a "treat" and can easily be ruined by rude staff.

I've been to The Hill a few times and each time I've wanted it to be better but just I've been disappointed. We went for a quick lunch after the gym this morning. I really fancied the broccoli cheese soup that was advertised on the sign outside (which I've had before and it was amazing) and a sandwich. My girlfriend wanted a salad so we ordered but she was told I couldn't have a sandwich, just the soup. I found this really ridiculous as they serve a Sunday roast and their main menu but I couldn't get a sandwich. I settled for a soup but when it arrived, it was some sad grey mushroom soup and a weird hunk of bread. The soup was ok but had far too much cream and was a bit gritty. The salad that was unceremoniously dropped in front of my girlfriend was just pathetic. It didn't have the asparagus or Parmesan shavings on it, the prawns were not King Prawns and there were only a couple of them on it and the lettuce was limp, brown and just grim. She took it back and the staff took it back to the kitchen. The head chef came over and apologised, blaming an inexperienced chef and saying they didn't have king prawns or any replacement salad so she could choose something else. She ended up having the gnocchi on the chef's recommendation, which she enjoyed apart from it being absolutely swimming in grease. A member of the bar staff came over and said 'I've been told to come over and offer you a complimentary drink'. It was just rude and showed he clearly doesn't understand what customer service is. I've had great food in here but the service has always been dire. I desperately wanted them to improve but this was the last time I'll be going into The Hill. It's such a shame that the front of house is shambolic. The place could do with a damn good clean and refresh and for all the bar staff to be replaced. I might then consider a revisit but with so much excellent competition for food and drink in Forest Hill, I won't be returning any time soon.

Always a relaxed and friendly place to eat. Whether you're having brunch, afternoon tea or dinner. The food is consistantly good and there is a vast range of drinks from coffees to cocktails and everything inbetween.

The chef is back and on top form. Completely new menu and the food is divine. I had the chicken supreme with pesto crushed new potatoes buttered asparagus and a sunblush tomato and chorizo sauce. It was perfect and we cannot wait to return to try the other new items. Very friendly place, great range of drinks and a gorgeous little yard out the back for the weekend and evenings when its warm enough.

I left The Hill the Tuesday evening feeling really disappointed. Table of 7. Firstly our food of mainly starters took an hour to come. I questioned why 2 of my starters didn't look as they usually do! I was met with attitude from the bar lady telling me they are "fine". Now I tend to order the same things every time I've been to The Hill so I know they were wrong and especially after waiting an hour to eat I was a little annoyed. 10 mins into eating at 9.10pm while still eating we was told the bar is closing at 9.15am! When we questioned the bar lady the response was "well there's not much custom so no point in staying up for a few" Oh WOW great way to make us feel like valued customers. And maybe I'm wrong but surely she is paid for the shift!!!! So we finished eating by 9.30 and I left at 10pm and she still hasn't attempted to clear our plates. Sorry to say that she had a very terrible attitude. Which is such a shame because I was in the Saturday gone and that bar lady couldn't be more helpful and lovely (she made me a lovely strawberry fizz and Mocca). Matt is lovely and it's such a shame about some of his team.

Please can someone other than Matt organise and sort out "The Hill"you need to employ a good team, new menu theme nights or something. The last 2 times I have been here with a group of friends we have been told the bar is shutting, last orders this time is was 9.10pm and we where still eating !!! It is not a customer's fault the rest of the restaurant isn't busy. Did we want pudding emmm no chance of that. You have a lovely gem don't lose it, like you are losing your customers.

We had a very long wait before getting our food even though we were nearly the only people there. The food was 'average', loads of vegetables but not great meat.

Dropped in on a cold Saturday night with four hungry young children. They catered for all tastes, had toys for them to play with, were friendly and the food was lovely. A gem we were just passing by, but will be visiting again when in the area with family.
