Dropped into The Hideout whilst on a few days away in The Lake District, there were four of us and we fancied a quick cuppa but unfortunately there was nothing timely about this place. We chose a table and sat down, previous customers dirty cups still on the table we sat at did not get cleared away. Two lads working behind the counter, two customers already in, one lad working there was busy rushing around not getting much accomplished, the other was busying himself with some Tupperware boxes, even though no customers were being served anything from them. After about twenty five minutes the first of our 2 coffees arrived, the kids were still waiting for their milkshakes which were sitting half-made behind the counter, had I discovered then the amount of bluebottles that infested the place we'd probably have declined them! After no less than half an hour one of the lads who worked there came rushing back through the café door carrying Oreos and Kinder Buenos from a shop next door, he then proceeded to put these in the blender with the liquid from the half made glasses of milkshake off the counter before bringing them over for the kids, as it turned out, blending milk and biscuits passes as a milkshake, and takes half an hour! As we were on our holidays we didn't complain but really should have as the time taken to serve us was beyond belief for what needed to be done. Before leaving i decided to quickly nip to the loo, was rather confused when the door named 'toilet' led me into the kitchen, I then spotted the toilet which was absolutely swarming with bluebottles and a full fly strip of them hanging in the corner. As this room is adjacent to the kitchen I am certain these flies pose a risk to the food also. In a word disgusting, i would not come back in here again. As I was walking away I noted that two new customers were sitting at the table we just vacated, they now had both our dirty cups and the previous punters adorning their space!Aptly named 'The Hideout' ...I think the owners should be in hiding.

Called in for a quick lunch. I always try to support small businesses trying to find one open on a busy Sunday afternoon in Penrith was hard. Ordered tea and soup, the girl behind the counter is in the wrong job she was surly and unpleasant. Our soup arrived cold and we returned it to request a few more minutes in the microwave it came back to the table ok, but not really hot enough. As previous comments the toilets are accessed through the kitchen.. surely a no no? The place looked dark and grubby inside the display counters were hard to see through. So much potential but sadly not really seen on our visit today.

Having read some of the negative reviews of this place, you really need to take them for the sanctimonious tosh they are. Honestly, people who write one or two reviews oozing with disdain such as the one complaining of a lack of demerera sugar should be ignored. This is a good standard cafe with nice surroundings and a decent breakfast. I was concerned when I noticed the sausage and bacon being taken from warming pans but they were quality meat and piping hot. Toast was a little underdone but the nice people gave me a parking disc and pointed out that I’d dropped cash on the floor as I left. Nice place.

Decor looks like they’ve made an effort but that’s as far as the effort goes. The kids menu is not current so after making a choice, they were told they couldn’t have it. Staff were in abundance but none seemed particularly interested. Soup was nice however, accompanying bread was dry and hard. Coffee was insipid and not recognisable as coffee. Children’s meals weren’t served and we had to collect from the counter. When we asked if it was our food sitting there, there was no apology for lack of service. We try when possible to use independent coffee shops but this is an almighty fail. Why you would have to walk through a kitchen to access a toilet is beyond my comprehension.

The first thing you are aware of when you enter this café is the overwhelming smell of burnt oil! We nearly walked out but the décor is lovely and it looked welcoming. We ordered at the counter - two coffees, and sandwich and a baguette. The coffees were good but it was spoilt by the fact that there was no brown sugar. The sandwich was tasty but with a very meagre filling. The baguette when it came was I think a brioche not a baguette. I had ordered bacon brie and cranberry. Maybe it is me but I have always been served a warm baguette or at least warm bacon with brie but it was stone cold - a slice of cold fatty bacon, in a cold stodgy brioche. The brie was nice and the garnish that was served with it is every good - slaw with lettuce and a spoonful of spicy sweet noodles which were the best thing on the plate. It was very disappointing and I didn't say anything at the time as I thought the only thing that will happen is that they will offer to microwave the baguette which I really did not want. The woman serving behind the counter was very pleasant and seemed to work hard although I did notice that she was wearing blue gloves to prepare the food but then took my money still wearing the gloves which I thought rather defeated the object of the exercise! There was a guy working there as well but he spent most of the time sitting at the back of the café drinking coffee with another guy and when he did come up to work at the counter he decided to hold a conversation with another customer sitting at table by the door at the top of his voice which was really off putting! Last but not least the loo is through a door that goes into the kitchen area and then you go through another door into the loo itself but that door was wide open and the loo itself was - without going into too much detail - certainly NOT clean! All in all a pretty poor experience and we will not return.

Visited with the family. Had 2 burgers, it's a build your own style a choice of toppings cheeses and sauces. Then served with lovely fries and the best and I mean the best onion rings I've had. Burgers locally sourced and tastes very fresh and of a very high standard. Wife had the vege option and was equally impiressed. Little one had sausages and beans. Sausages were very good and would be excellent on a cooked breakfast. The food was served quick enough that you know it's fresh and was piping hot. Toilet was clean, just strange it have to go via the corner of the kitchen but but not a problem at all. Staff really friendly and polite. We left with full tummys and smiles all round would recommend to any one.

Went in for a FULL ENGLISH with the mrs. NEVER WILL WE COME AGAIN. Microwaved beans, mushrooms were like rubber, bacon was more fat than meat, tinned tomatoes had just come out of a fridge and stone cold. Well done guys you made a good cup of tea but your coffee was horrid also. Not even a 1 out of 10. How can you mess up a cooked breakfast.... and where the hell was the black pudding? I will give the cook some credit... he cooked an egg to perfection. Please for God sake buy an apron and stop wearing your own clothes to work in a kitchen. I dont know about anyone else but I always wash my hands... you guys did not even do it once in the whole 45 minutes we were there. Absolute disgrace.

I have coeliac disease. I was happy to just have coffee. The lady serving us was so friendly and helpful. She has friends and family with both coeliac disease and a dairy intolerance, she clearly understood the seriousness and issues around allergies. She very apologetic that they had no gluten free cakes , they normally do and offered willingly to go to a nearby Morrisons to get something for me if I didn't mind waiting. I said had a GF cake I happened to have from the services in my bag if it was okay for me to eat it in their cafe. No problem. She told me how they keep GF bread in stock and various types of milk, e.g. soya, almond. I asked if it would be possible to have my coffee in a mug rather than a cup because I find it easier to hold due to me having M.S.. Their cups all had quite small handles so she gave me her own mug! My husband had a bacon and egg sandwich which he said was great! I cannot give a full 5 stars simply because they didn't actually have any GF cakes in but what a pleasure to visit this friendly little cafe. If we were locals we would be there regularly!

Lovely food. I got a Tuna panini and it was very nice for a small café and it was at a very good price. I finished my pot of tea and needed the loo so I went to the door that I had seen 3 or 4 people go in but it had no sign on the door. I went in to see and found myself in the kitchen and in front of a "STAFF ONLY" sign. Worried by this and very embraced by this a came out. I was going back to my table to then be stopped by a gent who told me I was going the correct way to the loos. Very confused I went in and through the "STAFF ONLY door to find the toilet.

We were waiting for the train and stopped here because no where else was serving food. I ordered the falafel sandwich and was surprised when it came out more like chicken salad than falafel but I loved it! What a unique idea! My husbands sandwich was the special and was delicious as well! I really like that my spring salad was mixed with a cous cous salad. Very surprised and impressed!

Called in for morning coffee, and was very glad we did. We ordered 2 coffees & 2 buns, but when the waitress came with our food she also brought extra buns & shortbread for our young children. Lovely coffee & buns. We asked for a glass of water, and we were provided with a bottle of spring water at no extra cost. Excellent service by very friendly and extremely helpful staff. Couldn't fault this place. Definitely recommend. Thank-you.

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.
