The Haynes Fish and Chip Restaurant in Bath and North East Somerset

Came here today after being recommended by a lot of people. I was not disappointed, food was fabulous, fresh! And the chips were proper chip shop chips like they should be.

On holiday in the area and glad we stopped here the food was brilliant (eldest son said its the best fish and chips he's ever had) the staff are really friendly and helpful, restaurant has a great atmosphere

Have been eating from the Haynes for 69 years never a reason to complain the food and value are A1 and the staff very helpful and friendly, Highly recommended.

New to the area and ordered Haddock'n'chips. Fish is cooked skin on, so one side of batter and skin just fell away, leaving the rest to break up into small bits. Chips a bit overcooked too, so unfortunately won't be returning am afraid :-(

Best fish and chips In this area , price is ok for the quality, service is friendly and usually busy too, restaurant part is dated but people still enjoy going. Overall the best I know of in North Somerset

Meal was a long time coming. Fish repeated on me all night. Chips were soggy and tasted of cooking oil only.

Good village fish & chips with food service and delicious food.

Moved into the area recently and fancied giving The Haynes a go this evening. My wife and I normally share a Large Cod and Large chips so that's what I ordered with a side of Mushy peas. What I got was very disappointing, it fell very short of the described Jumbo Cod, the fish was thin, small at best and grey, coated in an overcooked burnt batter, the Jumbo that I paid a premium for was no bigger than the fish in the warming area, the batter left a burnt bitter taste in my mouth. The chip portion size was by no means large although the chips were very nice. This place feels like its describing one thing whilst your served something quite different, the meal cost a premium and I didn't mind that but I expect to receive a premium product. All in all this place fell well short of expectation, quality and quantity given the premium price tag failed to impress, a smile from the staff wouldn't go a miss either, I was standing at the counter for a good 10 minutes without any acknowledgment of my presence. I won't go back sorry guys.

Went to Haynes for mums birthday day been here a few times, they never fail to serve the best fish and chips staff are friendly and efficient . Can’t recommend it enough

Well - not been to The Haynes for such a long time - why! These fish and chips are still the best around. You have to go a long way to find a fish and chip restaurant cooking in Beef Dripping - OK not a vegan style but hey we are entitled to have at least one traditional ‘Chippy’. The Cod was moist and as fresh as it comes and the chips were cooked to perfection. A friendly and family restaurant and takeaway - we booked a table which was a very pleasant experience - service excellent. Can’t praise The Haynes enough - despite a 40 mile round-trip we will be eating here regularly from now on. Food reviews are very subjective and so our experience may not reflect others; we have often found that you are at the mercy of the chef on the day - we were so looking forward to our meal at the Haynes, we were not disappointed. Highly recommended.

Lovely F&C, freshly prepared, served by really friendly and efficient staff although I think the elder gentleman may be the owner!. Lovely to eat in, nothing to much trouble and licenced to sell wines and beer.. Great and reasonably priced

Easy the very best Fish and Chips in Watford, massive portion of chips, they don’t double or triple dip the fish, like most fish shops in Watford!!! So you get a massive bit of Cod…. Excellent consistent quality fish and chips. I have not tasted better. Cooking by the proprietor who I think second generation of this family business. Local staff, always well trained and friendly. No hesitation in recommending for take away or dine in, but need to check when the adjoining cafe area is open as does does not open every day of the shop opening. I have been visiting on a regular basis for over 20 years.

Ordered a take away chicken burger and chips, chicken burger was so fatty and chicken was dry. It was inedible only mayonnaise in it no salad, it was certainly not worth the money. Online menu also needs updating.

Stopped here to get fish and chips and chicken and chips, and initially the portions seem small, but it's actually quite filling. Chips are lovely and fish is very fresh and the chicken had a lovely 'moreish ' coating on it - we shall be back for more.

Brilliant fish and chip shop! Gluten free options too! The chips are the best ever, cooked in beef dripping, the old fashioned way. Highly recommend this place.

If this isn't the best fish and chips in the south west then I'd be very surprised. The very best f&c in the south of England are undoubtedly Bardsley's of Brighton, in my humble opinion. But for a f&c shop/restaurant out in the country to be consistently this good is very impressive indeed. Well worth the drive out from Bristol to eat in their restaurant. Eaten there again today and the f&c still first class... Visited again October and still first class... Been many times since October. Just as good as ever, every time. Best fish and chips restaurant for many many miles around.

Take out. What has gone wrong ? I lived in High Littleton 39 years ago and it was the best fish and chips in the country. Went back today and it must be the worst in the world .

As our preferred local chippy, our fish and chip c/w mushy peas takeway was up to the usual standard. Batter was lovely and crispy!

Disgusting fish and chips , Batter soggy, fatty like it was cooked in old oil, tasted horrible , suppose to be large fish ???? Chips soggy again bad taste like old cooking oil , will not be going back Waste on money

Wasn't bowled over by the food. You don't get a lot for what you pay. The bigger issue is staff I'd say. There seems to be no real customer service, to the extent the guy cooking behind is shouting out asking what customers want. You just get the impression the "front of house" don't want to work there.

Portions too small price too high for a large chips market average £2.30 Haynes price £4 for less chips?

Chips lovely but I think our large cod was slightly undercooked in the centre, however, overall nice food and good value.

We had fish and chip takeaway from Haynes, as we normally go to the fish and chip shop in Paulton we had two fish and one portion of chips the amount was disgusting and we were both still hungry when we finished, with the same order from Paulton we can’t eat it all, from Haynes I could have easily eaten it all, the price from Paulton is about the same but twice as big a portion and better service and quality, we live locally but we will not be getting fish and chips from Haynes again

Friendly Fish & Chips! Visited on my way home for the first time after good reviews. Staff were brilliant. High Littleton is all 5 miles to my home in Saltford and my fish n’chips was still hot and delicious! The fish was perfectly cooked and the chips were as good as I have tasted. I will definitely be calling in again. Thank you Haynes for serving quality and good value food.

The crowds of people waiting to get in at opening time were understandable once we'd tasted our chips. In the short drive home I had practically finished my portion and will definitely be returning for another.

We sat in for a meal after a long day moving house. It was just what we needed. Great food, great service and really good value for money. Will be coming back lots!!

I visited this chip shop with my Mum and Dad back in 1972 - I was 10! I can only review how it was back then - excellent! We were on our way to Dawlish Warren, Devon and my Mum hated motorways so my Dad always drove down the Foss Way - as much as he could - "the Old Road" as he used to call it. My Dad passed away in 1985 aged just 45! My Mum is now in a nursing home and as I was sorting through her house I found a receipt from Devondale Chalet Park, along with a card for this chip shop, it was called Fry-Fare then but the proprietors were, I assume, the same family - Mr & Mrs A E Haynes. I do remember the chips back then tasting amazing, so if they are still fried the same way as they were back then by Mr & Mrs Haynes, then I'm sure they will still taste great. I would love to call again one day!

Love this chip shop it is my favourite, very reasonable prices and lots of choice. I have always enjoyed my takeaways from here, it’s great that you can eat it outside too. Also waiting times was very fast even when in a queue. They have only lost one point due to the staff are always unfriendly never smile. It makes it uncomfortable. This is exactly just like the plaice in Timsbury The Haynes is worth the walk or bus fare as I much prefer The Haynes. Just such a shame that they are both so unfriendly.

Visited this place on way home from visiting a relative in Bath. Didn't know it existed never been there before. The best chicken & chips I've had for many years. All cooked fresh to order, in beef dripping!!!😋😋 The taste and smell was amazing. Nice friendly staff and very clean. Great place, just a shame its an hour away from me....😪😅

I've been twice so far, 2 x cod and chips. I really like this chippy, the batter is really good and the chips are tasty too. It's great value, around £6 for standard cod and chips. I will definitely be trying more from the menu :)

Lovely fish and chips which I am partial to occasionally. Friendly and fast staff both in the restaurant and take away with good quality fish used. I can easily recommend these fish and chips unlike all others within a few miles radius.

The fish and chips are excellent. Only grouse is that telephone orders take precedence over customers even tho nobody there to collect the phone order. 10 - 15 minute wait at opening time.

I went in for a chip buttie. However, the baps they use are about 5cm in diameter. Just about big enough for 4 or 5 chips. I thought I was a joke when it was offered to me. Needless to say, I won't bother trying there again.

We’ve lived fairly locally to this chip shop for years but because it’s not on our passing route we’ve never tried it, we’ve heard how good the food is from so many people that we decided to give it a go.. wow! The fish and chips were AMAZING!! Honestly, the tastiest fish and chips I think I’ve ever had!

Small chip shop in a small village. Cooked well but portions were very small large cod was the size of a large fish finger, large chips equates to about 2 dozen chips and I'm glad I got the large mushy peas as I would hate to see them cut a pea in half to fit one into the regular container. Price wise it was about what I would expect to pay for a large cod, large chips and large mushy peas, so given the portion size it was over priced. Guess you are paying for the convenience and as there is no competition unless you want a 15 minute drive then I can sort of understand it. Next time though I will drive

Fantastic fish and chips. I've tried a few around the area, Bath, shepton, Radstock but this is by far the best fish and chip shop. The chips are cooked really well and the fish is lovely and flakey with a crispy batter, mushy peas are delicious as well. Highly recommend 👌🏻

Top Dog n truly a grait chippy n probably the best in the area n the fish n chips rock n roll too! Well cooked proper chunky potato chips with a crispy n light freshly cooked finish. All the usual trimmings (that other chippies don't have) , like curry source, pickeled guirkins, eggs, onions n even more. Not just the usual two types of fish, chicken n different pies are also on offer. This place is very popular and has a restaurant, so book early to get a seat or turn up n join the takeaway queue. You can even phone in an order if that's what suits u too. For a wee chippy in a small village there's lots on offer here. Service is well good n knowledgeable staff behind the counter. Give it a go, what's not to like? Also it's a valuable local business n employer and the staff are friendly, happy n knowledgeable n the girls must be from to the village too. It's well good, clean n food is fresh or cooked to order.

I’ve never written a review on here before but since I cant reach out via email as there isn’t one online and I certainly don’t want to speak to the grumpy lady over the phone again. I would like to advise the lady taking calls this evening 18 sept 2020 take some lessons In telephone manners. Answered the phone with 2 words, told me next collection is 7.20. No hello, Haynes can I take your order or how can I help you. Or the next available collection is xxxxx we are open for walk ins if that’s more convenient??? ooookayyy......the food is really good here but if I have to talk to grumpy counter staff like the grumpy telephone lady. Basically not the greatest customer service this evening. Clearly the staff didn’t want to be there or had a bee in her bonnet

I'm so happy the restaurant has now reopened. The take-away is excellent but we missed the banter and friendliness of sitting down for a meal not to mention the lovely food. A warm and friendly welcome, excellent food from a varied menu and it's licensed to sell alcohol. Heaven. Highly recommended Pictured is the salmon, baked potato and salad.

Great quality and size. Queues get very long on Friday/Saturday night. You can ring ahead but there's a fair queue for those too.

Ant and the team have been serving up the best fish and chips in England since I was little! All the weirdos complaining about wait time, it’s because every fish is totally skinned and cooked fresh (read: no nasty grey skin on every piece of succulent cod). And if you can’t afford a tenner for your fish and chips maybe you shouldn’t be eating out at all. Long may they continue! I’ll be coming in for my usual when all this virus nonsense has calmed down!

The staff are really friendly and welcoming here and the food itself is very tasty! I’ve been coming to this chip shop since I was little and it’s good to see that nothing has changed. Mr Haynes himself always goes out of his way to greet the customers as they walk in which is a nice touch as well! It makes you feel like he really appreciates his customers. I had the pea fritter tonight and it was really good! I’ll definitely be coming back for more. 😋

I’ve eaten from this chip shop from as long as I can remember. Over 10 years! I even used to travel over an hour to come here. Unfortunately over the past year or so they seem to have cut portion sizes massively. They are TINY now!! My daughter actually had more chips in her child’s portion than I did in a full size portion? I would always tell everyone how amazing the chicken burgers are and they used to be a decent nice size! Again they are sooo small they hardly fill half the bun. This is such a shame and reading other reviews it seems I’m not the only one who feels this way, no email address or Facebook page so cannot give feedback directly to the chip shop. The quality of the food is still lovely, but the owner obviously needs to consider portion sizes before he loses many more customers! Not only was I disappointed by the portion, but the waiting time was unacceptable, I phoned to place my order to collect, was told 15 mins, arrived after 20 mins and waited around another half hour. This is just not on! Hopefully someone who works there will read these reviews! All I can say is if it’s the same next time I visit I won’t be coming again, and will make sure friends and family are aware of the terrible changes.

Arguably the best fish and chips in the area, not too greasy and really good quality food, just bear in mind that the prices are relatively high and the portions are far smaller than most chippies - As an example, their large cod is smaller than most chip shops regular cods and you get a very limited amount of chips, even with the large bags. Because it so popular, it also gets extremely busy in peak times with queues often out the door and parking is limited so the best times to visit are as soon as they open or after 7.30. Makes a nice treat every so often though.

Burger diabolical £5 and they don’t even throw in chips.
