I love the Handsome Sam. It's a no nonsense ale house with great charm, friendly service and great cask ales. I tried the beer flight of three halves, then settled on a pint of 4.2% Bexley Own Beer. Please take your time to wander over as its a lovely detour from the town centre 🙂

stumbled upon The Handsome Sam by searching Google, when in Whitstable, the weekend day very warm, places by the beach over crowded, which not suiting me. I got a warm welcome by the landlady, had a couple of pints called Hoppy Ale. I'm glad places like this exist, I'm always glad to give them my custom, they don't do food, just drinks. If you ever in Whitstable, drop in, it's

What a great little place this is. Just a few barrels of local brew’s at excellent prices. We really enjoyed our pint and the guy serving us was very helpful and friendly, even offering table service to everyone. Quirky interior and certainly would recommend it for a pint or two. Cheers

Stumbled upon this place and like it so much we missed two trains back to Faversham where we were camping. Friendly place, I brought the bar man a lucky dip! Lost Lager in bottles for £4.50 and a good selection of keg ales and ciders. Highly recommended.

Micropub like we remember them. Proper beers, interesting selection, no fancy snacks or cocktails etc, and a very friendly welcome. People who talk to each other and are open to letting random wandering strangers join in the chat. A very warm welcome, some offbeat conversation and zero pretentiousness. Didnt get the vibe here that we felt in some other bars of a massive townie- incomer divide, or a Londoner- local split. Here it seemed like everyone was welcome, everyone mucked in and mingled. We heard the sad story of Handsome Sam and raised a glass in his memory. When we come back to Whitstable, this place is first on the list for a drink.

So there i was on the brink of disaster when a shining light descended to me as if from the heavens, it was the handsome sam. After using the lavatory i sat down for a half of lemonade and had a great chat with the friendly staff member about sport! What a fantastic establishment.

A super friendly micro pub with a good range of Kentish ciders and beers. Prices reasonable ( compared to Londons!) and even provides bike rack to lock it safely, something larger places could learn from! The name 'Handsome Sam' ( my first born son's name so I sent him a pic with cider in hand to him in Aussie) is attributed to the owners black cat Sam who sadly died. A nice touch.

We popped into The Handsome Sam with friends before going for a meal in Whitstable. We were made to feel very welcome by everyone already in there. It is a lovely micropub serving a good range of real ale with the option of wine or spirits if you are not an ale drinker. We will definitely go back.

Charming little spot for ales. Definitely earns the title micropub. Small selection, but it’s a small spot so that’s fine. Looks to have a good rate of changing of new beers on and with options for the non-beer drinkers too. Incredibly friendly pub landlord will make sure you’re always watered. Does have a loo even though it is so small.

A taste of Latin America in this iconic park of Central Canterbury. Great coffee and food (especially its “parrilla”). Cheerful atmosphere (including life music) and fantastic customer care. Ideal for a sunny day, but also cosy in the winter with heaters and sometimes a toasty fire!

Being a solo traveller and having lost a family member lately, I assumed I wouldn’t be judged for having a quick phone chat while I enjoyed a beer here. Turns out hip gentrifiers have reached ancient Canterbury and a rather rude chap working there, immediately approached me to tell me to get off the phone. Guess you can’t buy manners!
