Nice old pub, friendly staff. £6.05 a pint of IPA!!!!

Really great old school pub. Good selection of drinks lots of indoor seating but where the place really comes to life is the outside seating area. Lovely views of the river and bridge at the back and more seating with patio style heaters nearer to the building. Staff very friendly and helpful. TVs showing sport all around the internal bar area. Will call again whilst I'm in the city.

Not been to Durham before and was walking about looking for a decent pint, popped in here and found it was pretty decent. Got served by a nice lass called Mia and enjoyed the the view of the river from beer garden. A recommendation for anyone in Durham

On the walk home after a great night with friends in this pleasant establishment, I realised I had left my phone. My hero bar woman Myrtle came to the rescue, she had stuck around past closing in the hopes I’d be back. Great night great staff fun times.

Great range of pints, always got the ideal football matches on. All round just a very good pub. Special mention to Myrtle who served us over the weekend. Very friendly and sorted all our drinks and snacks in no time.

Lovely service from Dianna and iris, I had problems with a discount code and they were happy to sort it. 10/10 would recommend drinking there.

I had the displeasure of visiting The Half Moon in Durham, where the experience can only be described as a battle of wills between me and the TV remote. We asked the lovely lady behind the bar to switch to the football on the big screen—she was a hero, doing the good work of customer service. Two minutes later, the owner must’ve heard that the big TV had been hijacked and decided to step in, to move the football back to the small TV in the corner. But wait—there’s more! The reason? The rugby (which, let’s be real, wasn’t even starting for another 1.5 hours) had to be on the big TV. Now, I get it, rugby fans are passionate, but there were zero rugby fans in the pub, and it was Italy playing. So, the most logical decision was obviously to have Italy take over the tiny corner TV, while the big screen stayed loyal to... no one, because there was no rugby fan to even appreciate it. In conclusion, if you’re in the mood for a pub where the football battles an invisible rugby-loving dictatorship for supremacy, this is your place! Would I come back? Would I heck

Real nice to go into a pub that caters for rugby fans as often pushed out for football. Good range of real ales and amazing beer garden out the back back the river a right hidden Gem Staff really friendly a quick service considering how busy they are.

This pub is the perfect spot for watching games in Durham. Nice atmosphere and an excellent outdoors area also with screens and this patio is also equipped with heaters. During summer time is excellent for having a pint outside. The prices vary but they a good selection of drinks so you have different options if you just want to spent a little or have shots and wine.

A traditional pub with amazing interior architecture that anyone can enjoy, it’s a warming atmosphere with a variety of drinks to offer. The staff are lovely and welcoming and have a great attitude and the beer garden is a sight that every visitor of Durham must enjoy

Lovely peaceful little pub, worth every penny not just the pints but the absolutely wonderful staff. Even in the terrible British weather they never fail to be warm and welcoming, especially to your little pooch pals.

We had a very enjoyable afternoon watching the rugby and then went on to eat and after decided to have a couple drinks before heading back to indigo hotel. After one drink I alone decided to have one pint Guinness before we went home. I was refused the one pint on basis we (3 of us) were being too loud and too drunk. I was shocked. I am 60, my wife is 56 and my friend 69. The young 20-25 year old bar person offered no real other explanation other than ‘loud’. There were around 10 persons in the bar. I did find it funny at first the novelty of it quite amusing but actually after speaking to said bar person I was quite insulted. There were a few men near us who were chatting and swearing now and then but not being a problem however we were picked on - the 3 of us- I have a southern U.K. accent, my wife is Irish, my friend from Durham. One can only assume we were treated so badly due to our accents not being local. My local Durham friend was of course furious but I told him leave it the silly person behind bar has no clue. It’s a nice bar but clearly if owner lets idiots run it there will be less sales - we won’t be visiting again and with so many other pubs near by why would we? I write this 1 hour after being told I am so drunk I could not be served one pint Guinness! Indigo bar happy to take my money !

Brilliant, well run pub. Justifiably one of the most popular in Durham. Great vibe and great selection of beers and well kept cask ales. As good as any pub anywhere.

Been to this lovely little pub a couple times now and absolutely love the atmosphere. Was served both times by a lovely barmaid called Iris. So well mannered and had time for everyone.

Lovely traditional pub with great staff. Great location for watching the sports with lots of TV’s inside and outside in a very large beer garden that looks out into the river. Brilliant selection of ales and draught lagers. Highly recommend if you’re in Durham and passing. Pop in 😄🍻

Great Staff, great feel and atmosphere.

A top pub in a city where there are many good bars, certainly our local of choice. It's renowned for its cask ales, as a sport-passionate venue, and is equally popular between locals, visitors and the university crowd. Called in yesterday, very busy but service prompt and with a smile. No food (other than crisps etc - OK by me), no kids, well-behaved dogs welcome, and a marvellous riverside beer-garden (with heating!). Characterful building, and a member of Timothy Taylor's Champion Club (Landlord's a best seller with Draught Bass.)

Great pub. Just moved up from Wales and lovely barmaid called Kim gave us directions on the city, very help and extremely fast with service. Also a good little gem to come and watch the football. Although be warned it's deep Newcastle territory judging by all the black and white last game day.

I’ve been to a few pubs in Durham and non of them have blown my mind quite like the half moon, from the service to the spacious beer garden, even the friendly regulars you just can’t go wrong. No nicer pub to be found, especially that one fella behind the bar I think his name is Pete? Such a lovely and helpful guy making sure I was aware of all the deals that were on.

spent my 21st here absolutely brilliant service from lea, the beer garden is beautiful and a great space for socialising, can imagine how lovely it would be in the summer.

One of the worst places I’ve encountered for ‘queue’ management, and knowing who is next to be served. The most recent time I was ignored, I was the 3rd person at the bar (so it’s not rammed!) and people that rocked up after me got served, including a man who was RIGHT next to me, so that proves we’re not invisible where I was standing, they just didn’t serve me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Seems like a nice place but families are not welcome. On the website https://www.thehalfmooninndurham.co.uk/# There is nothing indicating it's over 18s only. In fact it says you will always receive a warm welcome which is not true if any of your party is under 18. Hence the 1 star review.

Great atmosphere and excellent location.

I live 3 villages away and still prefer to think of this place as my local. Great atmosphere and staff have an amazing rapport. Hygiene standard is nothing shy of first rate. Trouble makers aren't welcome, unless that trouble maker is a 4 legged playful canine! Overall, perfect pub to relax and shoot the breeze, inside or overlooking the river. (And yes, Kim told me to write all this!)

I met some friends there last Saturday afternoon. The pub was busy (it was Grand National day, the Newcastle match had been on the TV, and as it was a nice day, there were many people drinking on the terrace behind the pub) and the atmosphere was pretty good. The only problem I had was that the service was very slow, mainly because the place was so busy, but it was also apparent that the bar area is pretty cramped and disorganised. (Many staff seemed to be hanging around because they could get to where they needed to be.)
