The Gun Public House and Indian Restaurant in West Berkshire

I was in the area for work. Was craving an Indian. Google and this place was the closest. I read the reviews and was happy to order. I arrived to collect my takeaway order at the time given and it wasn't ready. I was happy to wait of course. I paid which was not the amount I calculated on the menu online it was £5.50 more but yet again I paid it as I was expecting a lovely Indian. I waited and waited and waited and waited and the stsff kept going to the kitchen for updates. Something to do with the oil wasn't hot enough for cooking the chips. I waited again and waited and the waitress apologised and I said its no problem you can't rush good food. The food arrived I left got in the car and dashed off. I'm sorry to say the food was cold the curry was warm the chips cold the rice cold. I arrived at my hotel and sat down to watch crafts 2025 final and started to dish up. I ordered chicken tikka curry, pilau rice, chips, onion salads, mint sauce and poppadoms. The tikka curry had no taste it was like it was watered down. I've never had a tikka curry with no spice or taste. As i said the rice was cold. I couldn't eat the chips and the mint sauce wasn't mint it was more yoghurt. The poppadoms were soft and not crisp as should be. Overall very very very dissapointed. I love tikka curry but this wasn't anything like. Very friendly and accommodating. Lovely,tasty, freshly cooked dishes. Lots of choice and good advice given regarding flavours, strength of curry. Reasonably priced and great service. Would definitely recommend.

Had over 50 take aways from this place over a number of years and has been excellent every time. Super tasty , super service nice people.. almost don’t want to rate it too high so it gets too busy and quality reduces but have to give credit where credit is due and share with others in the area !

Great family meal, just got back from some glamping and wanted something to cozy down with and warm us up. All dishes were lovely, tasted different, prepared fresh. Can't fault, will be ordering again.

We had a birthday celebration here tonight and we will definitely go back. The food was gorgeous and the service was fantastic!! The staff were so friendly and helpful. It made our evening really special.

We have just moved to the area and was looking for an Indian Takeaway, and we struck gold. Lovely food and Sam behind the bar was welcoming and friendly. I would certainly go back.

Good place, the ambience was nice and the food was okay. I found one thing that's not up to my imagination was the side dish I got when I ordered Chicken Biryani. I got Sambar as side dish. As an Indian, I haven't had Sambar as side dish for any Biryani. Usually it's served with curd.

This pub turned restaurant requires a little spruce up but otherwise service is polite and welcoming and the food smells delicious! We may give it a try next time as it seems a hidden gem. On this occasion (& on another several years ago!) we were just passing and stopped by for refreshments.

For an historic traditional pub out of town serving curry this good is an absolute treat! Combining Indian, Bangladeshi & Nepalese dishes in a relaxed pub and dining space, and a sky sports, darts, pool room on the other side of the bar, The Gun has everything covered. Clean non-oily food presented on spotless white crockery by excellent attentive staff. The Gun is worth a visit. Family friendly, garden in the summer, and an extensive menu for even the most critical curry connoisseur. Love it.

Tasty food and pleasant service.

If you want friendly customer service, great curry and a lovely evening out, here is the place to come, we popped next door for a pint at the ‘locals’ snooker bar afterwards. The owner is very welcoming and polite. Also there is a great beer garden for summer, full of flowers.

Good old pub feel with a public bar one side and restaurant the other. Great staff working hard to cater for all tastes. Bit of a wait when we arrived at 8 but food was excellent when it did arrive. Fair prices and takeaway options too.

A half decent Indian in the edge of Newbury. Food has been good on each visit, staff are a mixed bag. Meal for two about seventy sovs with a couple of lagers and a large of red for the missus.

Love coming to this pub. Whether you want a nice pint with a few friends or have some delicious food. This place can offer both. Side bar has lovely atmosphere with a half decent pool table. Mai. Restaurant is well laid out. Food always top notch. Love what you guys are doing and keep up the high standards you've set yourselves. 👌

We just had a lovely meal here and the atmosphere was very relaxed and enjoyable. We had a very pleasant drink in their spacious and sunny pub garden whilst waiting for the table we booked (We got there ahead of time to enjoy this). The courses were superb, tasty and served over a leisurely amount of time so we did not feel rushed and could enjoy all the lovely food on offer. Attentive waiters, but never intrusive or pushy (as some can be in other establishments). Great food, great atmosphere and lovely staff. Highly recommended. Well done on tonight guys ;)

Nice pub and restaurant. Had to wait a while for the take away order but it was around kick off time in the World Cup so forgivable.

Haven't been in here for years and and was impressed by how amazing it is in all aspects, uvw never eaten here before and the 3 of us all ate different meals and all agreed that our food was outstanding!!! The staff are friendly. We totally recommend and look forward to returning.

Good food, had couple of the specials. Decent size portions and had a pint whilst waiting for takeaway to be cooked. This is now my go to for curry...

Well it was closed on a Monday so not easy to tell. Have been twice before though and it was very good!

Me and my wife have been to a LOT of Indian Restaurants over the years and we can confidently say this is easily one of the best we've had, if not THE best. Prompt and efficient service, decent prices. The food itself was delicious - we went for Poppadoms, Mixed Starter, Jalfrezi, Lamb Tikka Massala, Pilau Rice and Keema Naan plus a few drinks. The fact its attached to a bar shouldn't put anyone off, the two are separated in the middle (and supported by a wrap-around bar) - it just means you get an expanded selection of drinks you wouldn't find at another Indian restaurant! Our bill came to £69 which we thought was very reasonable. If we're ever in the area again we'd go back, without a doubt.

Friendly people and good indian food, decor and ambiance lets it down, they could very easily make the place look nicer, lower the lighting etc. As it is its a regular basic pub that offers Indian food, good but could be great with a little effort.

Food was some of the best I have tasted and at a great price

The pub still operates but the restaurant menu was Indian food. Had one excellent meal there but it got a very poor hygiene rating due to unacceptable food storage among other things. Not sure if the kitchen has reopened since the inspection. I would urge caution.

Very good for Takeaway Indian. Everything tasted great and all our food was ready for pickup at the recommended time shown online. Easy online ordering system and will certainly use again.

Reviewed for the curry house side, not the pub. Great curry, a bit of a hidden gem for curry in Newbury as you are unlikely to search for it when looking for a curry. However, it is worth the short drive out of Newbury town centre. Lose a star as the wait for food can be a little prolonged; not too excessive and gives time for good chat, but on the flip side lends credence to the food being prepared fresh. Can get busy, so would suggest booking on popular nights, especially if more than 2 people. For Chicken Momo starter followed by Lamb Acahri, Chicken Tikka Masala, 1 Mushroom rice and 1 Sag Aloo with a pint of coke and small wine, you're looking at £38

Relaxed proper pub, great for a pint and a chat

We went in and were able to talk. It was a bit rough, but that could be fine. The beer was extremely stale, and after 5 mins they cranked up the music, even though it was empty so that we couldn't talk. I would go in to town if I wanted a noisy, stale beer, pub. Disappointing.

Good working man's pub. Although it gets quite warm as window doesn't open.

Average food, average cost in a somewhat unusual setting of a slightly shabby pub. The service was poor and very slow. It appeared that lots of takeaways were being ordered and I can only presume that these were given priority over those eating in. We won't return.

Now that this pub also includes an Indian restaurant it is a great addition to the local community. Food is great and the service is very friendly.

Went here as it has good reviews for Indian food, found it very much as a Indian in a pub (which it is!) So very crowded and noisy with tables in the bar area, anyhow the food was fairly quickly served and tasty, recommended if you're out for a drink and a Indian.

The food at The Gun is amazing! By far the best place for a curry in newbury. Eat in or take away it doesn't matter. You get the same quality with both! You will not be disappointed.

Good curry but the staff got a little 'frosty' towards my Wife ordering another drink, mmm 'chill out' be polite because you're not that good..

It still has the bar and saloon areas, but now has a very good Indian restaurant/takeaway as well. The food is pretty good and reasonably priced, and despite this addition it still feels like the same pub. Staff are very welcoming and the place maintains a cosy atmosphere.

We use it for take-away Indian. Gorgeous good, often have to wait much longer than agreed pick up time hence 4* not 5*.

Now a pub and Indian restaurant. Pub areas have been maintained, so don't be put off just going for a pint. Food is very very good. Staff friendly and obliging, reasonable selection of beers.

Beer is Good, a general re-furb & improvement of the children's play area would make this place more appealing.

I met three friends here for dinner earlier today. Having ordered at the bar we moved into the restaurant for dinner. initially we were served by a very polite, helpful waitress, however she finished work and a gentleman then cleared the plates from our main course. There was no attempt at conversation nor any offer of more drinks, dessert or coffee. After waiting for about 15 mins we then asked if we could order desserts and were told the kitchen was closed (21.01), no apologies just 'the kitchen is all locked up', ok so could we have some coffee we asked 'yes you can get it from the bar'. This is our second visit and the first was very similar we returned in the hope we had just caught him on a 'bad day' - obviously not and this unhelpful attitude it the norm!!
