The Gulab Tandoori in Chesterfield

The food is excellent & the price is right. It is a small venue, spoiled a little by the staff running around with takeouts, but when the food is that good you are going to get a high demand. I will definitely go again, but maybe at a quieter time. Give it a go!

Dad's first business in Chesterfield moving from Lewisham in London. The restaurant name was called Curry Mahal in 1982 Dad passed away in 1992 Now it's called: Gulab Tandoori in 1994

The worst curry I ever had . Same as my Family. Can’t believe people rated this place so well ! And on top of that once you leave you stank of food- no air- con or just simple good ventilation.

First visit to Gulab Tandoori on a recommendation. I was not disappointed; good welcome, extensive menu, good service all at a good price. If you like curry, give Gulab Tandoori a bash.

Ordered a takeaway from here tonight after not using for a long time. Remembered it as having lovely food but that was not our experience tonight sadly. We had saag paneer. The spinach was cold and the cheese so overcooked it was hard as rock. Chips were definitely reheated and stale. Lamb in lamb bhuna was tough. Chapati was hard. Definitely won't be using any time soon.

Well our two day blitz from E.Sussex up to Derbyshire, has turned into a curry fest. Last night we ate an incredibly delicious Bangladeshi meal at #thegulabtandoori The Gulab Tandoori in Chesterfield; the wonky spire town. We so enjoyed our meal that we returned again this evening. My wife Sue 'Gulab Jamun' who is half Indian was thoroughly impressed, as was I. She rates it the most authentic Indian food that she has ever had outside of India. We were really made a fuss of by manager Iqbal and the incredible staff. The food, welcome, hospitality and customer service is quite exceptional. We highly recommend if you ever desire a curry in Chesterfield.

I have tried several Indian restaurants in Chesterfield since I moved to the town, and the Gulab is the best by far. Apart from the friendly staff and its location, opposite the fabulous"Tramway Tavern", it is damn good food. My last visit was with 2 friends and self confessed Curryholics, who were both very impressed with the food. Neil had his usual Garlic Chilli Chicken, in order to set a standardised baseline, which he said was one of the best he had eaten recently, just the right balance between the heat from the chilli and ginger; and I had an "off the menu" Lamb Sag, which was deliciously zesty, and a Keema Nan, which was soft, sweet and meaty . As usual, it was busy, having a large party going on, but the staff still found time to give advice on what to choose and to ask for our thoughts on the food. Ian was over-faced by his Lamb Bhuna and the staff were happy to box it up for a take away. This is a traditional, old school Indian restaurant. If you want Punjab-Funk Fusion, look elsewhere, if you want a tasty curry, go to the Gulab, and say Geof sent you.

Best Indian/Bangladesh food I've had in years. The staff are so nice and the food is delicious. We came in just before closing time and took a takeaway, we wasn't disappointed the food was so good. We will Definitely come back for sit in next time. What a great place

Very tasty food and friendly staff

Ordered to tonight chicken tikka masala after reading ingredients and dietary needs. Collected, Lid said it was and there was no signs of tomato or peppers, couldn't eat as it was tasted that there was coconut it was creamy.

We went to this restaurant based on the reviews. On first outside glances it looks small but once inside we were greeted so politely and immediately made to feel welcome. We ordered drinks and poppadoms then onto the starters. There was only 2 of us but we ordered onion bhajis, samosas, and chicken chat. Oh my gosh!! The bhajis were light, crispy and full of flavour and the chicken chat was the best I’ve eaten in a long time. My mum really enjoyed the samosa and I didn’t get a look in 🤣. For main, we both ordered a biriyani. You could really taste those beautiful spices they used in the rice and the vegetable curry was lovely and full of lovely veggies that were not over cooked (always a treat). We did ordered a garlic naan but couldn’t touch it due to the masses of food we already had eaten. Perfect food, perfect hosts. So glad we went. 100% recommend

Just collected my house special curry i class myself as a curry expert as been a truck driver I try Indian food all over the country and got to say this was one of the best highly recommended will certainly be visiting again

We had a lovely meal here on valentines day. The food was good and staff friendly. They had made a special effort by attaching heart balloons to the chairs and giving roses and chocolates at the end of the meal. My rose is still blooming 2 weeks on! Many thanks. *****

I had an excellent meal here on a busy Saturday evening. The staff served people quickly and were friendly and attentive, despite it being really busy with people eating in and getting take aways. Had popadoms, with a great pickle tray, a mixed starter and main and side dishes. Great selection of vegetarian options, but no vegetarian set menu. The vegetable karai, dhal tarka and brinjal (aubergine) bhaji were great. The aubergine were done perfectly. The rice and tandoori roti, cooked in a tandoori oven were great too. Too full for pudding. For 2 people, with a beer each, the bill came to £45, which was good for the amount and variety of food. The only negative was the saag aloo, which was disappointingly bland.

Order for takeaway usually, but decided to eat in today. Staff are polite and friendly. Food is really nice and filling. For the price to eat in and the portion sizes you get, well worth the price.

Excellent food, never had a bad meal here. The owner is such a lovely guy, very attentive and chatty. The food is delicious i reccomend the Gulab special which comes on a sizzler plate whcih is a nice touch and the mixed kabab. He also gave us a free naan bread and 2 bottles of beer for new year which was very very kind of him. Honestly cannot rate this place enough. Having been to the restaurant on many occasions over the years this was my first for a long time due to relocating down South. This confirms that curries really are better up North! Service is always great and the 3 dishes we had were delicious along with great sides. Can't wait to go back and at a reasonable price, Congrats on a great night provided.

The Gulab used to be our favourite restaurant several years ago so decided to try it out again on Christmas Eve. We opted for popadums and pickle tray instead of starters which were good. For main course I had the tandoori chicken which was lovely. It came with cooked onion and salad. My fellow dinners had chicken tikka masala and lamb tikka masala. Both were very bland. We had a side dish of mushroom bhaji which did not appear to have any spicing. One portion of rice was enough for the three of us, but again it was rather tasteless. The best part of the meal were the naan breads which were light fluffy and huge. Service was fast and the restaurant was busy with both diners and takeaways. While the main courses were reasonably priced the bill came to £68.00 which was quite a lot for what we had especially since we only had two halves of lager and a coke to drink.

My Wife and I had a Meal here recently. Thursday evening , with a healthy number of people in the Restaurant. Service is prompt , friendly and good-humoured. The Food is good and we enjoyed our Fish Tikka Jalfrezi and Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi , supported by Vegetable Rice , Tarka Dall and a Keema Nan. It is always enjoyable in this Restaurant and we will be back before too long.

Really nice food, had poppadoms and pickle tray, prawn puree, onion bhaji, chicken pasandra, lamb khari, mushroom rice and keema naan. All was hot and cooked fresh, drinks a bit expensive

Have tried nearly all the Indian Restaurants locally in Chesterfield. The Gulab is in my opinion is the best. Good tasty food and decent portion sizes. Staff are super friendly too.

I've only lived in Chesterfield for 2 years and tried many of the indian takeaways. This one is by far the best I've tried so won't be trying anywhere else from now on. I'll be a regular.

Seven if us visited here for a family meal on a Saturday evening The owner and his staff were very friendly and chatty. The place itself has a nice ambience and decor The food was really nice. Good size portions without being over facing and spicy enough to be enjoyable without spoiling the flavours. The drinks menu is what you would expect and the house red was very easy to drink I think for 7 of us it came to abt £150 inc drinks and coffee which I feel was very good value for such a nice, well presented and very enjoyable meal. Will definitely be back

Lovely curry, attentive friendly staff.

My boyfriend and I order takeaway from here often and have sat in a few times. The staff are SO friendly and accommodating and the food is delicious! I can highly recommend their house special korai and onion bajis as they’re the best I’ve ever had. We love this place; always leaving with big smiles and full bellies!

This is the best indian iv ever had, they were busy but managed to get us a table and the service is fast and professional and the food is the best. £43 bill for 2 and 2 pints including is very good value. Not many places ypu can eat well for £20 each . My new favourite place

10/10. Best curry house in Chesterfield. We order takeaway from Gulab regularly and have never been disappointed. The food is consistently great and their customer service goes above and beyond. Knowing us by name/phone number and remembering our regular food orders, then even give us extra items to try that they think we might like?! So thoughtful.

Ordered some food for my husband's birthday yesterday evening after reading all the good reviews. Instead of ordering from usual Indian takeaway, wanted to order from a restaurant to make it special and even went and collected it since they dont do delivery. What a waste it was. It was the worst indian we ever had, it was so disappointing. Curries and biryani were so bland and tasteless, they have used old pre cooked meat, meat was dry and hard, and no taste of spices or flavour. Tandoori roti and naan bread were chewy and old as well. Food went to the bin. Come on why con people like this. You are not making proper indian food.

We have been coming to the Gulab since it opened and never had a bad meal. They have a fab vegan and fish options as well as the usual Indian favourites. The staff are always on hand to help explain the dishes and recommend those that meet your choices. Cannot recommend this place enough. As with all Indians, favourite dishes i.e. tandoori chicken marsala vary from restaurant to restaurant, however we find the dishes they offer here absolutely amazing, thankyou.

We’ve been having take away from Gulab through city grab for a few months now. By far the best we’ve had in chesterfield - and we tried a few throughout the pandemic! It’s consistently excellent. Would really recommend.

Went for a big meal. Fair few of us owner was great and another member of staff. The guy serving us seemed over whelmed by the amount of people. Kept shaking his head. Shouted at us to listen to him. Shame. Really looked forward to the meal and was left pretty shocked to be honest. Can't say I would go back again

Gulab tandoori is a great place to go all the staff are very friendly and professional there food is great plenty to choose from and easily explained to you if you not sure I go at least once a week and it's great to go to outside parking is available and not expensive to eat there try it you wont be disappointed

What a great find. We were stopping at the Premier Inn and were looking for a good restaurant, well we found one of the best Bangladeshi restaurant I have been to in years. Service was fantastic we were looked after by Sunni who served us a fantastic fish Tikka followed by two wonderful main courses of Lamb Tandoori, Chicken Jalfrasi served with Pilau Rice and a wonderful Naan bread. This restaurant is not to be missed if you are in the area.
