The Guard Room cafe in Plymouth

Since I discovered this place a few months ago it is always top choice for breakfast or lunch. Atmosphere is great staff are welcoming and the food always great.

One full English and two Smoked Salmon with scrambled egg, enjoyed by the three of us, washed down with some great coffee.

Had a tuna and cheese panini and a fish finger sandwich - all very tasty, although the fish fingers were very small and not enough for the bread, and the bread fell apart - disappointing.

What an excellent breakfast I had today good value good staff Very clean and tidy Probably one of the best breakfast I've had for many many years Will be back for more.

Beautiful location, amazing food, friendly staff. Popped in for lunch, you are unable to book, but luckily it wasn't that busy so able to get a table. They allow dogs aswell. Definitely recommend for coffee, breakfast or lunch. A really lovely place to go.

Lovely spot overlooking the river Plym, inside and outside seating. Friendly helpful staff. Delicious food well presented, can highly recommended the Guinness cake.

Appreciate it is busy but to wait 15 minutes to clear the table and then not clean it is poor. 8.50 for a tiny bit of smashed avocado is also not good. I will not be back as there are plenty of better places with a better atmosphere and more of a choice on the menu.

Stopped off yesterday lovely setting, we sat outside looking over the water, coffee was very good we had jacket potatoes decent portions but just a little hard in the middle. I would come again but I would have something different.

Had a lovely brunch here with my family. Was nice that they were dog friendly. The service was good. Food was lovely, we had English breakfasts, sandwiches and toasts. They did good coffee too. Would definitely go again.

Phoned to book a table for breakfast and we're told it was not busy and to come on down when we were ready, arrived 30 mins later and it was rammed mainly due to the iffy weather and it being Easter Weekend as Im sure some people would of been outside, we queued and eventually a table became free, food was nice but the service slow I guess cooked to order, we will come again when we can sit outside in this lovely little spot

Awful customer service. I can’t believe how rude one particular member of staff was. Won’t be returning.

Lovely location by the water with seating inside and outside, perfect for walkers and dog owners. We will be back on another occasion when the weather isn’t foggy and wet to fully appreciate the views

Visited with a friend , who was visiting me, and as I had always enjoyed a meal at the Guardroom. Attended had our food, which was OK, I then ordered our drinks, we were not told that they were closing shortly. Sat down and after approximately several minutes , the young female approached us and said " Can I have your cups " seeing our cups were full!! She then stood there looking at us. We both got up and walked out. There was a large group, who were clearly friends, and their table was full of cups/glasses and plates, but she made no effort to take these. I will never go back again, if they are happy to serve and not mention they closing in the next ten minutes, but happy to take my money, then that will be the last time they take from me.

London quality and good value for money. Lovely setting, ambiance, decor and freshly cooked food. In our opinion the Boringdon and the Guard Room are the only places worth spending your money within walking distance of Turnchapel. The other eatery grossly overpriced and poor quality in our opinion

This is an excellent cafe with an excellent team running it. Perfect for business meetings or to go with your family after a walk. I work nearby and use the cafe quite a lot for both business and pleasure. I have never had a bad meal or anything other than great service from all that work there. Completely recommend the cafe.

Have been here several times over the past year and is a great place to eat. Situated near a boat yard with a stunning outlook over a boat harbour is absolutely lovely. Food great especially their breakfast. Everything very fresh and great ambience.

Took dog for a walk ,thought we would stop off for coffee,went in and ordered coffee and bacon sandwich ,when it was bought to the table it looked smelt and tasted delicious. The bread was so chunky and soft full of thick lean scrumptious bacon havnt had a bacon sandwich like that for a long time ,well done guard room five stars ,would definitely go back and recommend top nosh 👍

Absolutely lovely food, well worth it and will be coming again. A few of us here working in the boatyard so thought we would grab a breakfast. Really good.

We went Monday morning and it was pleasantly busy, lovely to see. Tables nicely spaced apart, plenty of outdoor seating too. Friendly service and superb food. Freshly prepared and delicious. Great coffee too. We had the veggie breakfast, next time the sweetcorn fritters !

Extremely friendly and professional , although I live less than a couple of mile away I hadn’t been to visit this establishment . The prices for food and beverage are family friendly , as is the selection . Nice decor and outside area and parking...

Service was slow. Waiting girl was not pleasant. I was surprised to see that knives n forks were in a mug left on the table, previous customers may have sneezed or coughed. Also when the waitress did wipe the table she used a rather dirty...

I’m going to start with saying YOU MUST COME HERE ! The food is incredible, packed full of flavour, the staff are extremely attentive always checking everything is ok and nothing is ever too much! Every mouthful is just dreamy, and so carefully put together...

Great breakfast. Lots of choice on the menu, including for vegetarians. Lovely views. Nice decor. Really good hot chocolate. Friendly staff. Clearly very popular as it was constantly full, we had to wait outside for a table and appreciated being offered a drink while we waited.

We have visited this cafe twice now and each time have been impressed by the service and the food. It’s good value for money and in a lovely setting. We’ll be back

The provision of evening meals is a new venture for the Guard Room, and certainly worth a try!There is a small three course menu. Meat, fish and vegan options for starters and main course followed by a range of desserts. It was also possible to order a cheese-board (which was not on the menu).The coffee was good too.The dishes used simple ingredients which were well prepared, well cooked and beautifully presented.The table service is good. The Covid precautions, including advanced booking, were well managed.

Cuatro de nosotros vinimos a desayunar tarde. La bienvenida fue muy cálida y acogedora. La comida era excelente: llena de sabor e ingredientes de alta calidad. El servicio fue eficiente y muy amable. Hemos pedido que se divida una factura y no fue un problema en absoluto. Bono adicional: excelentes vistas. Definitivamente vamos a volver. ¡Gracias!

Vinimos aquí para el brunch y tuvimos una buena comida: Camembert 6. 50, club sándwich 7. 50, bagel de falafel vegano. La comida tenía un buen precio y el personal era genial,especialmente nuestro camarero James, que fue genial. Honestamente, tan impresionado por el servicio de la noche. Hemos estado muchas veces al día y siempre nos ha encantado la comida y la ubicación. Pero qué delicia es su nuevo menú de noche. Soy vegano y tenía todas las opciones veganas. Y solo creo que el plato principal vegano fue la comida más sabrosa que he probado. Bien hecho a todos los involucrados. Mi cita de la noche tenía el plato principal muy carnoso que no recuerdo, pero el tamaño real de su comida fue increíble.

Las opciones de mariscos que tuve (vieiras con salsa de coliflor y tocino; filetes de dorada con hinojo y papas pequeñas y floretes de brócoli) eran extremadamente deliciosas. La primera vez que he estado aquí y fui a la hora del almuerzo. Estaba muy ocupado. Me alarmó bastante ver que había una fila de personas haciendo cola para hacer sus pedidos tan pronto como entré por la puerta con muy poco distanciamiento social. Mi amigo y yo pasamos junto a ellos y encontramos una mesa afuera de la cual una camarera nos dijo que acababan de limpiar. La comida tardó mucho en llegar. Valió la pena esperar, estaba delicioso. Usé mi propio aerosol desinfectante de manos ya que no pude ver ninguno en la mesa. Usé el baño, que estaba muy limpio. En este momento, con COVID alrededor, no creo que vuelva, ya que no siento que estén tan bien como otros restaurantes / cafés en los que he estado. Un sistema unidireccional y desinfectar las manos en las mesas habrían ayudado. Sin embargo, la comida era muy buena. Al salir, vi un higienizador de manos en la pared cerca de la puerta, esto estaba oscurecido por la cola de personas cuando entré. Al salir no había cola para la comida, así que me sentí seguro.

Vine aquí hace unas semanas para conocer a un compañero que vivía a la vuelta de la esquina por recomendación suya y nunca había oído hablar de él antes, sorprendentemente, especialmente porque solía ir a menudo al antiguo 539 Sqn.Qué agradable sorpresa. Tomé un café encantador allí con mi compañero y tenía un buen ambiente, con mucha comida disponible y una amplia selección de bebidas frías y calientes. Las mesas estaban espaciadas y había un montón de desinfectante de manos esparcido alrededor. Silla de ruedas / cochecito y se admiten perros. Había asientos en el interior y al aire libre con vistas al puerto deportivo.Traje a mi esposa aquí hoy para desayunar y nuevamente, lo pasé muy bien. Ambos desayunamos y se notaba que todo estaba fresco. El personal fue muy amable y consciente de la situación y las circunstancias actuales de la pandemia. No tengo nada malo que decir. Regresaré de nuevo.

Had a lovely breakfast in a perfect setting. The full English was excellent, good quality ingredients. The avocado and hummus was delicious. Just the ticket to set you up for the day ahead! Great little spot, lovely views and really friendly staff.

Good to visit the cafe again now open and it’s all fairly relaxed and felt normal, sitting outside with coffee and cake, all well organised.

Almuerzo decepcionante con un amigo. We had a fantastic meal at this little gem, clearly enjoyed by those in the know locally and a real treat for us visiting for the first time.

Disfrutamos de una tostada de puré de aguacate y hummus y una papa con deliciosos champiñones. Came here late one soggy Sunday morning for a much raved about breakfast.Not disappointed in the slightest, To make a good quality breakfast you need good quality ingredients, real sausages and bacon, not the usual supermarket sourced stuff you get in other places.Oli, James and the team are doing a great job here.I do hope they can start openeing in the evenings, this would be a great location for dining.

The original car park now has houses being built on it but the Guard Room has clearly marked parking just along the road. The food was as good as ever and the service efficient.

What a find! Lovely location and view, excellent, varied menu with some lovely choices (ie not boring bread based options) and THE BEST spiced sweet potato soup I have ever had!! The staff were very friendly and professional. I would highly recommend this place.

Dejé de comprar un desayuno con algunos colegas por algo ligero para comer, ¡la comida y el servicio son insuperables! Esta es la tercera vez que visitamos y puedo decir honestamente que estos son algunos de los empleados más amables y educados que he conocido y que harán todo lo posible para que te sientas bienvenido y como en casa en este agradable y acogedor café. ¡No volveré una y otra vez!

Basado en buenas críticas pasadas hoy por capricho, yo y dos adultos más visitamos la sala de guardia para el desayuno. Nos sentamos exactamente a las 12 del mediodía ayudando a mi esposa discapacitada a sentarse y luego recogiendo tres menús del mostrador. Acordamos rápidamente tres desayunos y fuimos a ordenar desde el mostrador a las 12. 05 pm solo para confrontar a un hombre hosco con la respuesta, solo sirven el desayuno hasta las 12 del mediodía (lo notamos en el menú). El caballero siguió con el comentario de que ahora habían apagado todas las parrillas y que ahora solo servían del menú del almuerzo. . A pesar de explicar que éramos clientes por primera vez, dije que no volveríamos a visitarnos. Incluso cuando salía cuando estaba hablando con mi esposa sobre un asunto no relacionado, el caballero gritó desde el mostrador "¿tienes algo que decirme?", Mi respuesta fue que no tenía nada que decirle. Doblamos la esquina hacia Boringdon Arms para ser atendidos por un caballero muy agradable, un desayuno más grande al mismo precio, buen servicio, galletas con nuestro té y un ambiente agradable. Have eaten breakfast here several times and never been disappointed. Have tried different breakfasts each time from the traditional breakfast, veggie breakfast, the avocado and hummus on toast and the egg and bacon bap. All the food is cooked to order and it has always been tasty and the portion size has been generous. Coffee is great and so are the cakes. We have always found the staff to be friendly and service is good if you come early, but this is a very popular place with locals so it does get very busy at times. This is dog friendly and this is popular with people walking their dogs. There is seating outside which is lovely on a nice sunny day as you can see the river traffic and watch the boats going up and down. Small car park outside. Please be aware that this cafe isn’t very large, which is part of the attraction as it feels more personal, so it can be difficult getting a table at busy times and you might have to wait some time for your food. But, it is well worth a visit for both the food and the friendly staff.

We stopped in this cafe for breakfast and we were not disappointed. The service and food were excellent and all served up in a wonderful setting

I ordered the big breakfast, the service was very good and the food was served hot in a timely manner. My only gripe is the fact the big breakfast has two eggs, two bacon, two sausage etc, other than only HALF of a tomato was served, what happened to at least the other half of the tomato and for that matter the other tomato. Now this might seem trivial, but as an experienced chef, I very much look at the attention to detail when eating out. The cost of tomatoes are not expensive and to me this makes all the difference in making dining out an enjoyable experience.

This is a great cafe for breakfast and coffee. Myself and my partner always enjoy it. Just the right amount for me ( and i can eat a lot ) and always taste's great. Staff are very friendly and polite. This is our 5th or 6th visit, and its the same every time.Excellent service with excellent food.

Lovely setting with great views. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating Good coffee and a very good freshly cooked breakfast I enjoyed the veggie breakfast whilst my husband had a traditional one Very pleasant staff will definitely return!

Dropped by late morning for an ice cream or cold drink. Ignored at the counter by the 3 staff for a short while. Said they had no ice cream at all. Ordered 4 milkshakes after they changed the story and said they had ice cream for those. Guy brought 4 glasses clutched to his chest - no tray, no straws ("we haven't got any"), no spoons, no napkins. Milk shakes were almost warm and were obviously just milk and syrup. Guy again said they were made with ice cream but plainly they were not. Shame, because this could be an excellent go to spot - super waterside location. But the place lacks good management and well trained staff with good standards who treat their customers with respect. We won't be going again.

After a lovely walk with the dog, we visited The Guard Room. Lovely little place, great food, great staff and service. DOG FRIENDLY! Which is a bonus. Menu is not extensive but some great choices. Smoothies are amazing and so is the hot chocolate. Parking is around the corner, it can get busy though. Great place, up there on the top 10 breakfast places for me!

Really lovely place, great food and customer service. A very chilled vibe, perfect for breakfast / brunch. Will definitely be returning. Would be fab to see a vegan breakfast on the menu 🤞🏼

This is an Absolute gem- visited today for a coffee and cake stop for Father’s Day, dad was delighted with his Guinness cake and I loved my ‘happy slice’. Coffee as always spot on! Thankyou x

Empty plates all round. Great food great location, relaxed atmosphere. As a GF vegan among the meat eaters in my family I was happy that they catered for us all.

Called in here for a cup of tea with elderly uncle who thoroughly enjoyed looking at all the boats moored on the river Plym. Staff were friendly and curtious despite us not noticing they were closing at 4-30. Good cup of tea very reasonably priced.

Discovered this lovely little cafe a few months ago and have been going regularly.

Love this cafe, it has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere and the coffee is good. It can get very busy at breakfast time but we have never had a problem with finding a table.

This is a busy (at the time of visit) venue with some pretty decent food on offer. We each had the full English which was well cooked and tasty so no complaint there. However, we were disappointed at the nature of a few customers who felt it ok to bypass the queue and sit at tables already in demand for the people who were ordering their food and didn’t hide their arrogance. The staff although friendly and clearly busy seemed oblivious to the musical chairs going on. All in all decent food but marred by the actions of some customers and seating issues.

Warm, cozy, home made food. Reasonably priced and thoroughly advise a visit for coffee, lunch or a naughty teatime treat!

Lovely food. The cakes look amazing. Will have to come back. Shame they close at 4.30 on weekdays as it would be a good place to go to after work in the summer. The staff were really lovely.

The coffee was lovely, boiling hot. The food was good, again piping hot and well presented. The staff were nice. Now the but....it was pouring with rain, somebody came in with a large dog. The dog shook it's self covering us and the table with rain water, lucky we had finished eating!! The owner of the dog just said...come on you silly old dog. Not happy with being covered in dog spray!! Also another table had the dog sat up at the table on her lap! YUCK. Dogs should be kept under the table where food is being served and the owner of The Guard Room should in force this. Shame a nice visit was spoilt!

This is a great place. I hadnt been for a while and so enjoyed my visit again this week with a friend. The sweetcorn fritters were a delicious choice with crispy bacon and tomatoes. Beautifully cooked and presented. Coffee was good, latte. Friendly staff and tidy, organised cafe with a nice atmosphere. Plenty of happy customers. I stopped on the way out and bought a piece of the guinness cake. Wow good move ! I saved and ate the next day. The best cake i have ever tasted. Will be back to get a couple of pieces to take home again. Thankyou.

My sister and l went for a walk around the area and stopped off here for a coffee. Really lovely creamy latte's. Quite a few others have snacks too. A nice choice of eats. Outside seating on a patio over looking the water, plenty going on to keep you entertained. Will certainly call again. Good service.

After hearing so much about this café and having visited The Mess Room at YHQ (same owner) we decided to pop in one Sunday morning. We only had a Hot Chocolate which was very nice and reasonably priced. The café was very busy with majority of customers having cooked breakfasts and although we had nothing to eat, the passing food looked very good.

Small selection of excellent food beautifully presented and freshly made. Friendly helpful staff. Superb views of the river Plym and associated marine environment. Improvement to parking currently being made.

The guard room is a regular coffee place for me and my friends where we all live locally with babies and toddlers. We often have breakfast there and the occasional lunch. About 12 months ago I mentioned that I found it disappointing that they supplied high chairs but no changing facilities. It’s clear to see that there would be room for a drop down changing mat in the toilet. I asked about this again today being a year on as to why they haven’t installed one as it’s not a ridiculously costly thing, and In my opinion essential, I left a review on trip advisor over 9 months ago about this and how inconvenient it was changing my son in the cold outside on the decking because I don’t agree changing a poopy nappy in front of customers who are eating. I was told today that previous customers had left dirty nappies lying around in the toilet and apparently management are reluctant to get a drop down facility due to the customers doing this. While I think leaving dirty nappies around is disgusting behaviour and personally not something I would do, I don’t think it’s fair to punish all your customers due to a small majority. It’s a shame customers are not being listened to as it’s a nice place to visit and food is good. Maybe supplying facilities to mums may also sort your issue out and stop people from being so disgusting. I didn’t get a warm feeling today when I spoke about it with staff members, I almost felt like they thought my suggestion was totally unreasonable, despite me being polite about it. Complete shame as this is my local cafe and some of my friends don’t want to go down due to the lack of facilities provided.

Never knew about this little gold mine, you can tell the food is locally sourced,would recommend the sweet corn fritter. The scenery is amazing, the fact it was a glorious day made it a better experience, very reasonable prices as well, will definitely be back.

I know our FB friends have been here and said how good it was but i experienced it myself today and can fully back up their recommendation. I ordered a Latte & Teacake and after a few minutes the order was delivered- the coffee in a huge cup & saucer and a big teacake on a breadboard with 2 big chunks of butter which soon melted into the hot dough. The Latte was excellent as was the teacake.

Unfortunately I had a disappointing experience. I was turned away on Friday as you weren't able to open the double doors in order to get my double pushchair inside (the same width as a wheelchair). The lock was broken on the second door.

The guardroom is situated in Turnchapel overlooking the water. It is beautifully decorated and is becoming a very popular place for both locals and visitors; whether it is just for a quick coffee or for a meal. Our visit today was for breakfast. The menu is not vast, but has something for everyone.

Good rustic food presented in a rustic way. All homemade. Breakfast, lunches and tea treats! Good for families, walkers and social meetings with friends.

It may be small and tucked away and the menu may not be huge but it still punches above it's weight. Love the fresh cakes and the good coffee. They cater for dietary requirements too which is great. Have had coffee and cake and sometimes brunch. Staff always polite. It's a pleasure to go in. Keep forgetting it shuts at 4.30 so sometimes miss it.

We visited here with friends this morning for the first time, what a lovely place bright modern and clean with a really good menu my husband had the full English and I had mushrooms on toast great taste in a very vibrant cafe will definitely visit again

This cafe is such a gem. Lovely food, friendly staff, open friendly atmosphere. A short walk from car park or caravan site. So so worth it. Please come here. Support a local cafe and be amazed.

Lovely views and great latte combined! Views of the harbour and lots of boat action! Hidden away at nearly the end of Mount Batten headland. The staff are friendly and helpful.

Love this little gem! Nice to have a decent latte that is served nice and hot! Friendly staff, hidden away location but a gem when you find it. Dog friendly too which is always a blessing

Stopped for lunch and had a Bacon, Brie and Cranberry panini and a chorizo and halloumi burger. All the food was absolutely fantastic, topped off with a lovely brownie. Would highly recommend this place to anyone!

A really nice cafe where you can sit outside and watch the boats in the marina. They do fantastic coffees and great value for money, £2.50 for a large cappuccino, my kids enjoyed the fresh ice cream milkshakes also good value for £2. Staff very friendly and parking outside we will be back many times.

A scenic journey along a waterway route to this super cafe,overlooking the River Plym.We enjoyed a delicious breakfast,well cooked and served with a smile.Seating can be inside or out if the weather permits.We returned on another day,(outing for ladies who lunch) and enjoyed sampling the lunch menu.Cannot fault the menu,service and ambience.We will be back for more scrumptious Guinness cake.

Snuggled away at the edge of the road I was introduced to this cafe by a friend and it is now one of my favourite places to visit.
