The Guard House in North Hertfordshire

Never again, ordered a takeaway for family over £60 told it would be an hour which turned out to be over 2 hours, kept telling us when we rang that it was around the corner (it wasn't) cold when it arrived. Vegatarian dish had chicken in it. Promised a, refund which we never got.

Upset stomach last time I ordered here. Food quality didn’t seem very good. Called to inform but no answer.

They simply refused to accept our order even though they were paid and were advertising home delivery tonight. No explanation given. We can only assume they were not willing to deliver, even though they have many times in the past. Very very disappointed. They've lost our custom for good now.

First time trying this restaurant and was happy with the quality, kind of like a healthy Chinese is best way I could describe it. Very fresh ingredients, lots of vegetables so didn’t feel like your being too naughty! Very delayed delivery was the only negative but they only opened recently so that is so be expected to an extent.

Had a wonderful meal last night, the food was excellent, fresh and very flavoursome. Safwaan is a great host. It was our first time at The Guard House but will certainly dine there again, can highly recommend them.

Arrived Stone cold and bland / inedible

I ordered at 6.30 was estimated at 7.15-7.35 heard nothing and rang at 8 to be told 8.20 it arrived at 8.55! It was 1hour and 20 minutes later than the latest expected time. No call or apology, nothing extra put in to say sorry and it wasn’t exactly piping hot either. Food ok but I wasn’t impressed waiting outside hotel for all that time for it to arrive. When I called they said they would let me know when on way and they didn’t do that either. Took 2.5 hours!

Food was cold and over an hour late. Called restaurant twice to be told they had run out of ingredients so had to get some. Terrible service and cold stodgy food

Food was over an hour late. Asked for an update they said it would be an extra 10 mins. Waited another 30 mins, called the restaurant 4 times to be cut off each time. They eventually called me back and said the food hadn’t even LEFT YET! So why notify me that it was on its way? Asked for refund due to delay and they rejected this as they were ‘busy’. Not good enough, keep your customers updating and update the delivery time instead of lying saying it’s being delivered? Not hard. Food finally arrived over two hours after ordering. It was bland, tasteless and all congealed together (see photos) so congealed that when you put a fork in to serve it up, the whole dish comes out as a big block of food, disgusting. Thought I would give them another go after they gave me manky prawns before but nope still just as bad. Oh and don’t be fooled by them saying contact the restaurant after a bad review so they can rectify it. I emailed them last time and they never responded. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. Not sure how they won an award!

Chicken satay was so juicy and tender and tasted absolutely amazing Prawn green Thai curry tasted fabulous and so did the chicken Massaman, all ingredients Tasted fresh and cooked to order and hot didn’t have to microwave like I normally do with a take away Didn’t taste Stewie like some Thai food I’ve had recently Best Thai I’ve had in a long, long time

The Red Thai curry was disappointing. Its consistency was too runny, and the taste fell far below expectations. Regrettably, the other dishes I ordered shared the same disappointing texture. Overall, this was the worst Thai food experience I've encountered.

Had the privilege of trying this restaurant for the first time and the experience was amazing. Inside decor was traditional authentic and laid out with enough space. The choice of food was enough to choose from and very filling. Our server Safwaan was always on hand and recommended a few dishes as well as attending to the table without us asking. Would highly recommend to friends and family for a lunchtime brunch or evening meal.

Was over an hour late and not worth the wait

Ridculas delivery!! We where eating dinner at 9.40pm far too late!! with no updates unless I called them where they would then say I'll check and hung up then never get back to you so you have to re ring them to ask if they found an update, also said they lost our number it's on our online order twice both house and mobile!!

Was late, but taste made up for it- would have been 5 star on food, just a shame the mixed starter elements chewy. Weeping Tiger was awesome!

2 hour late delivery. When we tried to call we kept getting told that the food was 'on it's way,' Manager refused to speak to us and when the food eventually turned up it was stone cold, watery and inedible. £70 wasted and we then had to order more food from elsewhere. After numerous attempts to call we kept being told the manager would call - he never did. Refund was refused. I'd would seriously avoid this place. Not great service, food or communication.

Great tasting food but a lack of protein and a lot of vegetables. Pleased we didnt order a Thai vegetable dish.

We had a fantastic vegan takeaway on New Year’s Eve. Really enjoyed it. The Guard house caters so well with such a great range of vegan options. Would highly recommend.

Beef masaman ordered with rice Barely any beef, 1 piece of potato, mostly sauce. Rice is like a brick, actually had to cook my own rice as rice supplied inedible. Called to discuss and was told manager would call back. No call back and now ignoring our calls. Don’t order from here if you’re hungry or want value for money.

We had the privilege to try this beautiful restaurant, and we can tell , we loved their food, service and hospitality. We tried different starters, such as, prawns on toast, Fish cake, satay chicken, and off course the beautifully presented mixed prawn crackers. We were so much looking forward to the soup and when it came on the table it blew our mind, the flavor, texture and taste was amazing. Beef noodles as a main course was super hit. Over all a fantastic experience. Thanks Guard House!

Delivery driver was friendly - food was cod and completely tasteless the red curry was extremely oily had to get rid of it as it was full.

Ate in here recently and was so impressed! The food was delicious and full of flavour. Such lovely customer service too. Highly recommend. The chicken panang and lamb massaman are so good! Also really loved the spring rolls in sweet chilli sauce. They have a buffet on Sundays which is so reasonably priced. Can’t wait to try it

I've dined in and had a great time, food was 10/10, glad that there's lots of veggie options as it's accomodatable for all and my parents really enjoyed who are veggie. Have been ordering takeaways every week since and have not been disappointed.

Recently visited the guard house to catch up with a friend and tried a variety of dishes. I ordered the pad thai which was very flavourful and the fishcakes which were very tasty. The thai green curry that my friend ordered was well spiced. lovely atmosphere with attentive waitress.

Food was beautifully cooked and was soooo tasty 😋. Can't recommend enough. Saf couldn't do enough for us. *****

The sticky mango rice was gorgeous - although it didn’t have a sauce it tasted amazing . The Tom yum soup could have been spicier. It lacked chilli depth . The vegan dish was superb thank you

Good food, delivery was on time.

Booked a table for upstairs for a party of 9, arrived to then be told we need to wait half hour for the table to be ready, came back half hour later to still wait another 15 mins & be told we can't have the upstairs table as it's not available. Ordered drinks which took ages & then found out he went out to get the beers as they had none. The food arrived & it was average at best, seem like it was rushed, very bland, not much taste & as a buffet there wasn't much to choose from. When we asked for the desserts to be Brought we was then told there are none available. So for the set buffet it wasn't worth it at all & we won't be returning again.

Disappointed as we ordered far in advance and someone marked out food as 'delivered' in the app before it had been. Second disappointing experience with Guard House in a row after supporting it since it opened. Shame!

Terrible just terrible. Ordered at 7.30 and received the food at 10pm. Having called the restaurant on several occasions which they said it’s being packed and it’s left then they flatly refused to answer the phone. The driver who looked like a chef said sorry and he will make it right. Still waiting. The food was bland and flavourless. Most of it was lukewarm and generally not very nice at all. After spending over £100 on Thai food I was hoping for something half decent. Sadly disappointed

Stale prawn crackers very watery green curry, mediocre pad Thai, not a great meal!

We went to the Sunday buffet and it was absolutely lovely. The owner was so nice and made sure everyone in the restaurant was well looked after he chatted to everyone. And the food was delicious, we were offered more and the buffet section was fresh and hot. So much to choose. thank you for a lovely lunch

Terrible food arrived 2.45 hrs after ordering, it was barely warm, it was extremely bland , there were items missing. The noodles tasted burnt overall it was a disaster. We was told on the phone that the delivery driver had left at 9pm to then call again at 9.40 as still hadn’t arrived and was the. Told again that the delivery driver had just left with our food. It arrived at 10pm and by then we couldn’t eat it as it was flavourless, barely warm and we had gone way past hunger not to mention it was way too late by this time for my children to even eat it. I will never order from here again.

I’m not too fussed about it being late because I live a way from the location. However, portions and quality of the food wasn’t fantastic. It was ok, but the curry was very oily. The mixed starters were nice, but satay sauce should be included with the chicken. The rice was good, but a very small portion. Overall, it was ok, but nothing exceptional.

Unfortunately had a couple of really poor takeaways from here. Was hoping it was a one off, but sadly not. Food was bland/too peppery/dry and the order is often wrong or missing things. Shame. Hope you can sort it out!

Prawns in my meal smelt extremely fishy and were mushy - looks as if they were old prawns and I did not eat for fear of food poisoning! One prawn was black and almost looked mouldy! Have ordered from here before and it’s been fine, but the quality I received tonight was disgusting. Won’t be ordering again.

Delivery person was lovely! Food was just OK. Everything was a bit bland, lots of oil in the curry and soup. We normally go to Giggling Squid, and think we’ll keep that as our Thai restaurant!

DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE! The delivery driver was rude, they missed my drinks of the order, the starter box food was inedible, prawn crackers stale and the Thai green curry came with 5mm of oil start on top of the curry and sauce! Will not be using this place again!

The portion of the sticky rice was too little. The beef in the curry was very chewy. The red curry sauce did not have a great taste. I will not recommended or order from them again.

Awful food delivered late and the taste was not what you would expect for the dishes we ordered, like someone in the kitchen was covering and just made the ingredients up. The meat was poor quality too. And the price did definitely not refleft this. Never again

The food from here was awful. No peanut sauce with satay chicken, battered (not just crispy) tamarind duck and tasted greasy and of flour, bland pad Thai, disgusting dumplings and awful prawn toast. All of it greasy tasting. Quite frankly it is a rip off and should be closed down

AVOID - we have ordered close to 15 seperate occasions from the Guard House Thai over the last 3 years. At times their food has been exceptional. We have had a previous poor experience that in good faith fed back to the restaurant to give them the opportunity to improve without leaving a review - on that occasion it was down to the fact that between 2 large prawn Panang Thai Red curries, there was a total of 6 prawns (3 in each curry)- as a result of a conversation with the manager following our feedback we were given a promise on our next order there would be "good will", which never occured. We ordered a substancial meal tonight for 2 with a total of 3 main dishes and a number of side dishes. The prawns were squishy and discoloured in places (a dark black colour, with a spongey texture - i ama seafood junky and have never experieced poor quality seafood like this), the red curries were very thin and almost chicken stock coloured. My feedback does not reflect the cost, as I would pay above the odds for a good Thai. The Thai fish soup, which previously was one of the most authentic I had eaten was 100% out of a jar and not freshly made. We ordered the food at 17:30, to be delivered at between 1930/1945 and did not recieve the food until 20:40 a whole hour late with poor customer service when we phoned to check up why it was late. Overall the food was poor quality, especially the soup. The seafood was clearly not fresh, I've never eaten squishy discoloured prawns before and both me and my wife were concerned about food poisoning so did not eat the full meal. Confusingly at times their food quality has been really good. You may order and recieve good food but in our experience it is not consistent and you may also receive poor quality food, which at the price you pay is not worth the risk. They also miss labeled the dishes when we recieved them, despite the dishes being correct. Bottom line the food is not consistent and neither is the service. There is a chance that you may recieve really authentic Thai food.... there is also the chance you may receive really terrible food - the price in this restaurant should reflect consistency at a bare minimum which it defintley does not. My advice would be order from a different restaurant. When the Guard House produce food at times its some of the best Thai I've had l, unfortuntley about 40% of the time it's been terrible - other local restaurants are way more constant - and tonight is the second time we have not eaten the food due to concern over the quality of the ingredients. This is an honest review based on food ordered on numerous occasions over time. Tonight was the last straw and the last time we will be ordering food from The Guard House. I hope this is helpful at preventing you from making the same mistake.

Food was nice but not very hot.

The Thai curries were good but the mixed starter had the smallest Thai fishcake I've ever encountered, almost size of a 50 pence piece and I think that could be improved for the price you pay. Sticky rice portions could be bigger too. Flavours good, some portions not so good.

Since we ordered , the food arrived 1hour and 30 minutes later. It’s too long and definitively outside of their delivery window time

Ordered a takeaway (spring rolls, Thai green and red curry, egg fried rice) from here as the last one from Thai Rack wasn't good despite years of being excellent. These curries had the consistency of a watery broth/soup, not creamy or thick like you would expect with coconut milk based dishes sadly. Green was OK for flavour (tofu was great), red was tasteless, chicken poor. Springrolls were excellent. For £30 we would have expected much more flavour!

The only Thai food we can get delivered to our area, and it's still quite far away. Luckily the food is tasty and fairly priced. It isn't super authentic, not spicy and very little fish sauce, but it suited my British palate well and I will be ordering from here again. Considering how far away we are it was delivered quickly and with a smile. Thank you for providiing Thai food delivery to my area!

Customer service is good. My drink didn't arrive with my order. I called the restaurant, and they fixed this for me straight away. Unfortunately, the food let them down. I ordered the chicken satay, which was quite dry - satay sauce itself was lovely. I then had the beef massaman for main. It came very watery compared to others I have had, and the beef was also quite chewy.

Ordered a takeaway for delivery, arrived in the time we were told, the thai dumplings were lovely, generous amount of dressing, Tom Yum soup very tasty and spicy, stir fry had good seasoning and spice level, travelled very well for takeaway too!

Never had a Penang like that before, the menu describes it as thick and the sauce was like water. Seems the delivery time had an effect on the quality of the food. Chicken satay also dry as a bone, sauce minimal. Good points were the dumplings and pad Thai, flavour on the penang was ok. Order was half hour half and semi warm by then. Overall highly disappointing

Incredibly welcoming with astounding food. Everything was fresh and tasted so, from the sweet chilli sauce to the spring rolls. Had a great chat with the owner and he shared his experiences of starting up the restaurant and cooking. Highly recommend!

Fish cakes were plasticy and tasted stale. Laab Ghal was not as described. Prawn Toast and Panang tasteless. However the Red Curry was delicious.

Great restaurant. Best Thai in Royston in my opinion

Although on time, the food left the restaurant 30 minutes before reaching me - literally a 5 minute journey. I would rather it stayed hot in the restaurant and left when it could be delivered promptly. On the food, this did not live up to usual standards. The duck dish was especially poor, with undercooked flabby skin on overcooked meat. This is very unusual compared to normal quality from this restaurant.

Service was slow but the waiter was very curious & polite. My food was nice but only warm and the chicken pieces in my dish had no flavour?.

Some bits were nice, others were cold or stale (rice almost stone cold when it arrived and prawn crackers stale).

I booked a table for my wife and I weekly date night. The service we received was fantastic and the food was lovely. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Second take away from the Guard House and we will use them again. However I don't understand why after paying £3 for delivery with an extra 50p service charge I then get charged 25p for the bag it was delivered in.

Massaman curry was really watery Panang curry was extremely hot! Previously ordered this meal before and it was fine. This is our normal order but today was terrible!

It was an ok meal delivery was on time. Green curry did not have a mixture of flavour but the rest of the order was nice.

Food was ordered at 17.23pm and given a slot of 18.10 to 18.30. Food arrived at 19.45pm. You can't call the restaurant as, according to an instagram post from 4th Feb, they have a technical issue with the phone line.The curry sauce was watery. Will not be ordering again.

We tried The Guard House to see how it compared to Royston’s Thai Rack (the two are just a short walk away from each other). First thing we tried was the chicken satay, and the first piece my partner tried was not properly cooked - I tried to capture it in the picture below. Curries we ordered were lovely, but will be returning to Thai Rack for Thai in future.

Prawns with Pad Thai were cooked nicely and tasty. Noodles were good texture, cooked right. But overall flavour was weak, needed more fish sauce/lime juice/something. Chicken green curry was just the right level of zing with the spice. It tasted ok. Right away on opening the container we could see the big problem: it was watery, more like a soup than curry, not creamy. Both dishes had the right ingredients. Special fried rice was good all around. Veggie spring rolls were crunchy outside, tasty inside. So, also good. Price was cheaper than another restaurant in town but quality was considerably worse. We were disappointed.

The food and customer service was on point. We had some dishes recommended to us from the owner which did not disappoint. I will certainly be visiting again
