Thai Rack Glass House in North Hertfordshire

If you are looking for authentic Thai food or something close, don’t go to the Thai Rack. The food is disappointing, as is the service. Simply too busy to pay attention. Everything is over sauced and heavily laden with sugar and salt. We were told that rather than serve authentic cuisine, they cook for the local palette. That’s understood. They are catering to the market. But to be told that we, as customers, should request authentic Thai food is problematic. Surely the onus is on the restaurant to offer both as does another Thai venue in Royston? This restaurant has clearly found its niche that is to trot out British style Thai dishes for locals. So if that’s not for you, please don’t bother and if you’ve travelled in Asia then stay well away. The sweet and sour chicken was drowning in sauce: more a soup than a stir fry. The chicken was thickly cut; a basic mistake on a good stir fry. When I poured the stir fry liquid onto an empty plate to show how much sauce they had served, then asked if they would eat all that liquid, the response was ‘no’. So why would they expect a customer to stomach this? The dish tasted more Chinese than Thai. Just chicken drowning in too sweet and too salty a sauce. Also the colour was a high red. Perhaps artificial? The vegetables were limp due to too much fluid. The rice was plentiful and moist but lacked any flavour. The crab tasted musty. The pork belly was over cooked, as if reheated. No crisp on the belly fat, where any fat could be found. The fat had more of a stretchy consistency than a crispy one. The pork itself was hard, and dry. Clearly overcooked. Perhaps reheated in a microwave? The colour was off too. The papaya salad rather than fresh and fragrant was also over sauced and limp. The same sauce as used on the soft shell crab starter, but diluted down. Again, super sweet. No bite to the vegetables. No standard citrus, lemon grass or chilli notes, more glutinous sugary and salty soupy sauces. Apparently, made this way for us locals. Customer service was embarrassingly poor. No one asked how our food was once we started to eat. Admittedly, the venue became more busy. But there was no interest there aside from banging out the order and leaving you to it. We asked 12 times for the bill, which they didn’t want to provide. However, the conversation about the whole experience was very much one of excuses, and had a sickly, patronising whiff of ‘you’re trying to run a number on us’. We paid in full, of course. We wanted to pay. We insisted. Having asked over and over for the bill, it was left for us to walk up to the bar and insist to pay again and again. At the bar, we were greeted with more excuses and contradictions as to why the food was so disappointing. It’s not about making payment or not, it’s about the restaurant taking on feedback and treating the customer with respect. It was very much about them; their excuses and ‘guilt’ (as they said) about the food, rather than about truly listening for improvement or to grow the customer base. Please provide a positive, respectable dining experience than tell me you feel guilt. If you love authentic Thai food, you’ll likely know where to go in Cambridge. This experience is for people who like heaps of food on the plate that heavily tastes of sugar and salt. No notes. No flavour. No fragrance. It was essentially a high class ready meal. We ate well less than half of the dishes. Just gave up. This is the third time eating with the Thai Rack in three years as each experience to date has been a farce. We’ve always paid in full and tried to give it a go because we want to support our local venues. But no more to the Thai Rack, and refusing to pay is simply to let them off the hook as they can convince themselves it’s a con rather than genuine customer feedback. They don’t care. That was the sentiment and clear by the response and behaviour. Then again, they have a niche but it’s not for diners who seek authenticity, or at least balanced flavourful cooking. No star rating. I have been coming to this restaurant for 3 years now, quite regularly, to dine in or takeaway. I have had such a lovely experience on every ocassion, due to the exceptional food, and staff who are always so friendly and mindful. Highly recommend.

I have to confess I think I have been visiting the Glass House since around 2006 and can honestly say that in those early days this would be my number 1 and go to resturant. After a poor experience, a number of years ago, we gave the Glass House a wide birth, but after around 5 years, we visited again, hoping for the fantasiic food of the past. Sadly, this was not the case, poor atmosphere, average customer service (3 attempts to get the correct drinks order, and there were only the 2 of us!), and then the food - tough cool chicken satay, satay sauce tasteless and with the consistence of water, beef jungle curry, no depth if flavour, just chilli heat, chewy beef again with no flavour, the same tough chicken in the pad thai, with congealed luke warm noddles, over cooked fish - I could go on, but the final nail in the coffin the fixed 10% service charge! Unfortunately, we will not return, preferring to remember the good meals, atmosphere, and service here in the past. Recent reviews appear to give a different view to the above, but sadly, I can not agree with them.

We had a lovely evening here with friends. Food was outstanding, I had one of the specials which was delicious. Complementary prawn crackers to start and chocolates to finish. Great, friendly service. Highly recommended

Finally made it for date night to The Thai Rack Glass House! Finding parking immediately outside the front of the restaurant, and the warm welcome from the staff was the perfect start to a delightful evening. Choosing dishes was the hardest part – everything on the menu sounded like a taste bud vacation! We eventually took the leap with some tasty starters (calamari, and pork & prawn dumplings). For mains, we dove into the Gang Ped Yang – a duck coconut curry that was pure creamy indulgence – and the Gang Pa, not for the faint-hearted, a hot jungle curry with pork that provided a delightful kick. Steamed rice and vibrant stir-fried vegetables rounded out the feast perfectly. Husband decided to round it off with a deep-fried ice-cream ball. The food was fresh, fragrant and delicious. We adore Thai food for its flavour explosion, but also for the way it feels lighter and healthier than some other cuisines. And, every bite brought back happy memories of our twenties spent exploring Thailand. Prices added up quickly though, expect to pay between £60-80 (for 2) with drinks and a tip on top. Now we’ve finally made it, we won’t leave it so long next time!

Really delicious Thai restaurant located only a couple of minutes walk from the train station, so it's conveniently located if you're visiting from out of town. The food is delicious- we had one of their set meals and everything we had was really tasty and authentic. We'll definitely be back again. It was very busy when we visited, so I'd recommend booking, which is very easily done through their website. All the staff were very friendly and looked after us well.

The meals are just rice and frozen vegetables. It was tasteless except for the overwhelming sauces. I ordered a beef dish but in reality the beef was just a few strings of meat.

First time we have visited and will be the first of many! Everything we ate was fantastic, definitely the best Thai wenhave had in years, and usually we would be eating in Central London. Portions are a very good size, service was brilliant and for a Thursday lunchtime it was very busy which is great to see! Cannot recommend highly enough!

While on my trip to Cambridge, I was on the hunt for some authentic Thai cuisine when I stumbled upon this gem of a Thai restaurant with fantastic reviews. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try, and I must say, it completely surpassed my expectations! The flavors of the dishes were incredibly authentic, and what really set this place apart was its extensive Thai menu, offering dishes you won't easily find elsewhere. The ambiance of the restaurant, designed like an antique Thai house with beautiful decorations, transported me straight to Thailand. It was a delightful experience to feel immersed in the culture while enjoying the delicious food. The service was exceptional too – the staff were so accommodating and willing to cater to our every need. My partner and I were thoroughly pleased with our dining experience here. We're already looking forward to returning for another meal, as it left such a lasting and positive impression on us. If you're a fan of Thai cuisine or just looking for a unique and welcoming dining experience, I highly recommend giving this place a visit!

We had two excellent dinner visits at the Thai Rack. Service was polite and helpful and the food was delicious. We tried four different dishes along with the sticky rice and coconut rice. On a very hot September evening the coconut icecream was also very well received. Excellent all round and would definitely recommend.

Very disappointed, the food portions were horrific for the prices. £38 for 3 dishes, one was Pad Thai, the other 2 were 2 curries, of which only had 4 pieces of meat in the whole dish, the rest was juice and small prices of veg. Will never order from the again. Disgusting.

I had family visiting and we went here for dinner. The food was so good and and we all agreed it was some of the best Thai food we’ve ever had. The staff were also friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend.

Came here for lunch yesterday for the first time and was very impressed. We had the set lunch menu which as well as being good value was also delicious. The four of us all had different starters and mains so we got to try a variety of dishes. The whole experience was made even better by the staff there. All the ladies were so friendly, warm and helpful. My three year old was dining with us and they were especially lovely with her. Even had kiddies plates, cups and cutlery which made life easier. I am not one to post reviews often but I was so genuinely impressed and had such a nice experience there I felt I had to. Will definitely be returning. 10/10.

We stopped in here for an impromptu dinner on a rainy week day night after picking my wife up from the station. The restaurant was quiet, and we were shown to a table straight away. Service was excellent and the food was also excellent. Really tasty and filling, I will come back here again without any problem even though I live in the Newmarket area which means this is a good 25 mile drive. For starters, we shared the mixed platter, and for main, we had the Thai red curry, which was absolutely delicious, and Gand Deng curry, also delicious but watch out it’s very very spicy. I strongly recommend this place to anyone that likes Thai food.

My favourite Thai restaurant, had countless take aways from here always been good never once let us down. Thai green and thai red curry's are very creamy, crammed with flavour. Had a few of the starters more than once always enjoyable. We tried the crispy chicken wings tonight were perfect as chicken wings should be nice and crispy. Tried the jungle curry as well has blown my shorts off.

It was our first time we had been here. We got a warm welcome from the staff. It was a Friday evening and the restaurant filled rapidly - clearly popular with the locals. Quie rightl so as the food quality was excellent and the ambience good. Well worth a visit, particularly if you like Thai food.

We called into this restaurant on our way to Norfolk after reviewing the menu on line before departure. We met some very pleasant staff members and had a cordial chat whilst waiting for our take away food. The food was of good quality and authentically Thai. We cannot fault any of the dishes, tempura prawn,Thai fish cakes, crispy fried salt and pepper squid,stir fried mixed seafood and stir fried crispy pork belly. Great food including some interesting ‘specials’ and this family-run restaurant continues to be first class. The service is friendly, attentive but not overbearing, and the atmosphere is lively and energising without being too loud. What’s more, it’s even reasonably priced. The Thai Rack is now by far the best restaurant in Royston.
