I was in the area for business and was passing by when my business partner and I spotted this place and decided to stop her for a wuick bite. Ordered a small chips, battered sausage, fish butty and a scallop. All for under £10. Service was great and food was phenomonal, very fresh and the batter on the fish was 10/10. Definitely will be coming back again when I'm in the area.

Just called at lunchtime today to buy two large fish. We were very impressed. The premises are clean and well laid out. The fish was excellently cooked with a lovely light, crisp batter and well wrapped up for us with the added bonus of a strong, well designed carrier bag to put them in. The staff too were very helpful. Will definitely call again.

first time ive been in. and it wont be the last. staying with family in the village and i fancied fish and chips. safe to say my "gut instinct" was a great choice.

First time called here and it was absolutely lovely. I ordered a large fish with regular chips with a small tub of curry sauce. The staff that served me were so polite and friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. The large fish tasted fresh and was cooked to perfection and the batter was just right, not too thick. The chips were delicious also, no crispy or hard bits. And the curry sauce I approve of too. Well worth the price for the quality. Would Recommend!

How do I give 10 Stars???? Ordered 2x Medium fish and chips Small curry and small peas. This would feed a family of 4. They have to be the best F&Cs ive had. Cooked to perfection. When visiting family in Flockton we regularly visit the Grumpy Fryer because not only are the fish and chips excellent but they come in whopping great portions too, meaning great value.

Read some reviews although there's not many, so checked Google as well. Thought we'd give it a go, and so glad we did absolutely outstanding with good portion sizes. Well worth the 24 mins 9 mile drive. Bonus I found the spiced mango curry house buts for another day 😛

Where do I start? Called in here whilst driving past from a job. Ordered large fish and small chips. So I'm a bit of a connoisseur on fish, I can tell cod from haddock, how long its been cooked, overcooked or undercooked. I'm hard to please. So here's my review. Wow, wow, wow. I just ate the best fish ever. Best size for the price best thickness, just the right amount of cooking, just awsome overall. Chips were lovely but the best I've had so far were in bridlington but the grumpy chips were close. However until I went to the grumpy, the brid shop had the best fish too but the grumpy stole it on value for money. The large fish was succulent and meaty. Can't wait till my next job is in this area. Next time I call here I will ask for lightly battered because if I had to offer any negative it would be that there was slightly too much batter for my taste but that is miniscule and that's just down to my personal preference. This shop is outstanding and the friendly service was A+. If your in the area and love fish and chips you have to try this place. It's like fish and chips from the 70s and 80s when chippy knew how to do great fish and chips.

Called in at Lunchtime and this place is AMAZING and the best fish and chips we have had in a while .Also Spam Fritter was DELICIOUS and the shop is spotless ,fresh and clean looking decor and friendly and efficient service. Will certainly be calling again if passing .

Can’t fault it ! The secret recipe batter is some of the best I’ve ever tasted!! Nicely portioned & presented. Only problem is that they weren’t grumpy 😠 Will be returning 👍👍👍

Have visited on a few occasions with colleagues on the way to and from jobs and always consistently good food without fail - although parking is a bit of a pain. The chips are lovely and never greasy or overcooked. The portions are amazing value and they don't scrimp. The gravy is the best I've had. Customer service always fantastic and always cheerful despite the name! Highly recommend.

Just had food with kids and was amazing. Mushy Peas are wonderful and the chips were the best I’ve had in this area because of the flavour. Will have to try the fish next time :-) also these chips beat the Kingfisher

Wow I don't like fish and chips because you always have that after taste of fish and chips when you burp, but not this lovely place beautiful will definitely be going back 100% beautiful.

Well sorry to say got fish and chips from this lovely couples but chips were soggy been seemed like they had been stood for a while .Plastic carrier bade them sweat so soggy batter also Won't be going for a while.

This chippy is run by lovely couple The food is. always excellent, especially the fish. Best of all the prices are extremely reasonable. I would really recommend this chip shop, one of the best around.

Twelve months ago I would have given Grumpy a five star rating but I think they have either changed supplier or the type of fish they use. The fish used to be quite ‘meaty’ but now it’s a bit soft and watery. Still ok, just not as good as they used to be but that’s just my opinion.

I like good fish and chips and these are good fish and chips. Only been here once, I will be visiting again. All staff were wearing masks etc.hand sanitizer on display etc. I often end up leaving half the chips and way too much fish, none of that happened with these! Delicious and will be back again. Soon.

Just moved to the area from down south- returning to ‘God’s Own’. Had a great local F&C take out in Pinner so we were on a mission to replicate this. When we found The Grumpy Frier we hit the jackpot. Freshly cooked fish and delicious fries. The curry sauce is amazing. Highly recommend.

Been here twice now. First time it was delicious and when we went back today (15th may 2020) when we got our meal the fish cakes were under cooked and hard, there was a hair in one of the fish cakes also the scallops were also under cooked. Very disappointed especially after waiting almost an hour. I can understand that they were busy but that is no excuse to under cook the food.

Been at work all day and saw this chip shop, i tried the door but was too late they were closed, as I walked back to my van a side door opened and a voice said I've got chips if you want some , I looked up and saw a smiling face , I said yes (obviously) after a few mins the man reappeared with a complete meal, what an absolute legend . After a long day the kindness of others is amazing, thankyou so much Grumpy fryer you made my day

The fish and chips are really good and it's also much cheaper than the other nearby local The Kingfisher. The young couple who run it are always really friendly along with their family who help out sometimes. It's nice to see them making a go of it. I'd much rather spend my money here than in a big chain like McDonald's or Domino's.

Special haddock and chips - excellent The haddock was very fresh with a light, batter. The chips were perfect. Could improve by making own tartar sauce, rather than in a squeezy sachet, but excellent cheery service and freshly cooked fish make it worth the stop. The 'special' haddock is special because it's a bit bigger. It's also cooked to order. Note, this shop did not seem to serve cod. Not a problem for me, but might be of interest to others.

This is the place to go for fantastic fish and chips. Believe me I've tried most places in the Wakefield area and this is by far the best. Enjoy!

We live locally and use the Grumpy Fryer regularly. Lovely crispy batter and big white chunky flakes of fish are exactly what makes this chippy the best around. Parking is great too, right outside the door. We would highly recommend this place!

Don't get take away very often, but when you fancy fish and chips they have to be good. The Grumpy fryer is anything but grumpy, young couple owners are so welcoming, bright and engaging. The fish and chips are the best I've tasted in a very long time. So light and crispy and great value. We really enjoyed them, can't wait to go back.

Excellent, local fish and chips at a very reasonable price. We only ever bother with fish & chips when we're up near Whitby as we never found one that was any good local to us, but I think that is about to change! Expect there to be a small wait at tea time as everything is cooked fresh.

How is this place even open. ordered battered sausage, chips and mushy peas. The chips were SO GREASY I could squeeze it out when I squashed it with a fork.The battered sausage, limp soggy batter, probably cooked yesterday.The peas were OK tho Avoid if possible, I through it in the bin.

Best fish and chips in wakefield by far ,a smile and a are you alright from the owner makes all the difference u don't get that anywhere else.Properly cooked fish thin crispy batter and the bronzed chips lovely decent size not scrappy anemic rubbish like every other chippy sell,shop amazingly sparkling clean, 5 mile round trip but we'll worth it.

This is close to my house and I thought I’d give it a try it was great with loads of lovely staff and the food was amazing well priced and had manny cleaver options on the menu like just a handful of chips for 30p witch I thought was a great idea for a fish butty great will definitely return

Visited here after visiting the National Coal Mining museum - 3 min drive away. We had the small fish and chips. Excellent portion, beautiful fish and reasonably priced.

The new young couple who have taken over this establishment in the past year or so cannot be praised enough. The previous owners fare was pretty good but the new owners have taken things to a different level.

Great chippy they cook to order so it is always fresh and hot and you can have a few or as many chips as you choose

Credit to the new owners they have worked hard to renovating the fish shop. It look so clean and professional. The food is excellent and crispy batter is perfectly cooked here. NO disappointments when going to the Grumpy Fryer its spot on.

This chippy has gone from being not very good when I moved here nearly 3years ago to now the best fish and chip shop for miles around. The couple who have taken it over have worked wonders with this place and deserve a huge thumbs up

This is a fantastic little fish and chip shop. The food is cheap but of good quality. In particular the fish is perfect, even the small fish at £1.40. Better than any Whitby fish and chips and even better tha Kingfishers. The texture and flavour of the fish are great. The other great thing are the scallops - no-body does them better. In addition the owners are absolutey lovely, very friendly and generous, often giving extra's if they think something is too small. Can't recommend them highly enough!
