A very classy and sophisticated interior design with an ambience oozing old money elegance. The cocktail bar serves interesting and delicious drinks whilst the restaurant is stunning. Food was nice but not extraordinary. Service was very decent overall. Highly recommended and most definitely one of the best in Belfast. (expensive though).

We had dinner here a while back. It was very poor. The food was bad with very little flavour. Expected a lot more considering the expense. Service is perfectly fine in a lovely setting. The side bar with drinks is nice but wouldnt eat here again.

Haven’t posted a restaurant review in a while but the food, presentation, service and atmosphere at this place were truly top notch. My compliments to the chef and interior designers/architects. The duck was one of the best duck dishes I’ve ever had and the bread and butter were delicious.

A family graduation celebration and the restaurant really did us proud. We have an eclectic set of tastes and each one of us were really impressed with the menu choices. The food served was of absolutely the highest quality and every mouthful was a joy to savour. I have eaten in some high end restaurants where it is style over substance but at the Merchant taste is the star of the show. The service was also extremely good being helpful and really attentive without becoming obtrusive. I wish I lived in Northern Ireland so I could go back soon.

Had dinner here on a weekday evening. Exquisite ambience and service from the staff. Service was excellent! The food took long to arrive but they were decent enough to apologise and let us know about the delay. I enjoyed the meals. I didn't fancy the drinks though, I hope they have more non-alcoholic options for folks like me I asked for an anniversary themed desert for my wife to mark the anniversary for when we first started to date, and they did just that 👏

I went to The Great Room with my boyfriend for our anniversary. It was a stunning place. We ordered the tasting menu and most things were fabulous. The food was delicious. Although the beef was a bit overcooked, the staff offered us a change of the dish. We didn’t want to waste food so we didn’t take the offer. She then offered a complimentary drink. The restaurant also offered us a cake for the celebration of our anniversary. Their scallops were cooked so nicely and the dessert is 100% a must try. I can feel the chef considered the combination of the food when they were designing the menu and they did so well on desserts. The yuzu, strawberry and wasabi sounded unusual combination but it was a fantastic combo with tiny bit of spicy from wasabi and the sourness of yuzu and strawberry makes refreshing combo! Amazing! Service wise, I felt a bit neglected. We tried to make eye contact with the waiter but he walked past us a lot of times. Until a waitress saw us and she asked us is there anything she could do for us. At this level of restaurant, I would expect more service. Turned out, it was the waitress looked after us more than the waiter who took our order! We waited very long to get our bill. Overall, I can feel the chef respected their menu and the food they designed and the waitress was well trained and able to deal with the situation. I would still recommend to come to this restaurant for the food despite the service was slightly disappointed me.

Located in the merchant hotel, the entrance to the great room Restaurant is up the front entrance stairs which is the original front of the hotel via a revolving door and on entry, there is a massive chandelier with a glass cupola and beautiful gold ceiling work - very opulent interior. It’s very large area. Friday night dinner with only half the table filled. Central Palm feature- piece with up lighting . Refreshing cocktail was very good- fresh, yuzu based, candied grapefruit on the top. London prices for cocktail- £16. Mains of John Dory- a special for the day, was not a large portion with two broccoli stems and a coriander sauce - was overpriced for the size. Service was attentive and excellent with a 10% charge to the bill. Overall it’s the ambience which makes dining there special. Service is attentive, but overpriced for the food standard and portion size.

Yet another amazing experience at the merchant great room for afternoon tea. The interior, the ambiance, the food and the service was outstanding. Lovely touch to have hot cross buns for Easter too. As a coeliac I love that my food is of the same high standard and I get very similar looking patisseries as the standard offering. So many other places you get a sub standard gluten free offering but not at the merchant. It is a little expensive but it's worth it for a treat and the whole experience is too class.

First time at the Merchant so of course we went for the tasting menu and it didn’t disappoint. I had the traditional whilst my wife took the plant based. We were offered swaps if desired as she will eat fish. We had a three hour meal ahead of us, courses came and went at just the right pace with time for relaxation and conversation between. Surroundings are what you would expect - ornate and elegant. Staff were exceptional at all points, friendly, professional and really added to the experience. The food was the star of the night especially the fish and the beef, on balance (& a score tally between us based on our own tastes) the traditional won over the plant based but both were great. It is pricey but we were there for three hours - of course we forgot the voucher we got for Christmas so we will just have to go back.

We visited here on a Sunday for the afternoon tea with Procesco, good points first Service was friendly and efficent Sandwiches were very good with nice selection for both of us, really good quality ingredients Scones were light, fresh and tasty along with the jam and cream Prosecco was good quality and we ordered a bottle after our two included glasses Not so good points The pastry selection was very poor Tonka bean with plum was tasteless like missing sugar or some flavour, we both felt same way Caramalised tarlet didnt fare much better it was a bit of a nothing taste Thick Nosiette travel slice ( we have no idea what it was suppised to be ) but it was thick and stodgy and instantly regretrable We also both receved a small cocoa type nibble which we were told was rasberry flavoured, both put back on the plate after one bite We really have sweet tooths so the Patisserie section was the one we were really looking forward to, slight saving graces were the carrot cake which was moist and very nice and the server brought out a nice little Birthday cake for us free of charge which was a lovely touch , the quality of this far exceed the items supplied. We left 4 full cakes uneaten at the end which for bun freaks tells its own story There seemed none or few real locally trained staff on either when we visited which i think misses a trick with locals and tourists alike, we watched some documentaries which had promoted local students/staff tie ups etc but could just be that day. Overall a slight disappointment only that it was a birthday treat and we ordered a bottle of prosecco to sit over we would likely have left sooner Patisserie chef needs to up their game, should be about flavour and not exotic sounding fruits for the sake of it, this part let the whole tea down Cost approx 2 afternoon teas with glass of bubbly £100 Bottle of Prosecco £38 Service charge £15 This is similar experience to what our friends had in January and they didnt say to us beforehand

One of my favourite haunts. The food once again was exceptional the service was excellent. The drinks and the delivery of such was not so hot. The bar was taken over with nothing more than a meh cocktail bar group to whom forgot the reason why they took the bar over it took 15 minutes to get a drink delivered to the table while waiting for our reservation. Sadly the people taking the bar over needed to get to work straight away. They seem more interested in standing behind the bar.

We booked the restaurant for the plant based tasting menu and when enquiring about the additional cheese course we were told really bluntly and as if it was obvious that the plant based menu is vegetarian and not suitable for vegans. We went round in circles with the waiter who only could tell us plant based means vegetarian not vegan which was incredibly irritating. Also weird - he referred to normal dairy cheese as plant based cheese. Asked for the manager who took ages to come and also unhelpfully stated yes plant based means vegetarian. Did not understand why I was confused or help us find alternatives even though I know it is possible from a footnote on the a la carte menu. Contacted merchant and they refuse to admit the menu needs corrected and weirdly insisted the waiter did try to help us find options - totally false. Need to educate the staff and honestly they need to learn some basic customer service skills.

Lovely meal in an absolutely stunning building/serving room. The staff were extremely attentive and professional. The food was very well cooked and presented too. The fillet of beef and accompaniments in particular were delicious. It's not often the quality of the meal matches the quality of the interior but this place manages to do just that. Knocking of a star for eye wateringly expensive (but pretty good) cocktails. The opulence of the room allows for it.

Went for a family dinner; I am vegan and my sister is lactose intolerant so also ate from the plant base menu. I had the aubergine dish wish was very nice but could have had a bigger portion of aubergine. There was two desserts that where vegan adaptable a sticky toffees pudding and a chocolate pistachio tart. We got both to share. The sticky toffee pudding was very good and came with a mango sorbet which was very nice but did not go with the pudding. The chocolate pistachio tart was ok but not very flavorful and would not order again.

For £80, the tasting menu was highly disappointing. The first plate (beef) tasted only like vinegar, the tuna was overly cured, which ruined its flavour, and the lobster plate was made up of three tiny (although very tasty) lobster pieces, with 3 half tomato cherries and a pseudo sauce of olive oil and watery tomato liquid. The main course was lovely (no complaints here). The desserts were just very average. Would definitely not recommend. Having said all the above, the service was exceptional and our waiter was very pleasant.

My wife and I visited the Great Room as part of our anniversary celebrations. We opted for the tasting menu… seven courses of the best that The Merchant Hotel had to offer, combined with the wine pairing. Or maybe not…. The first three courses were dry and tasteless. They really were awful. We spoke with the staff and they were most gracious and apologetic. We were given a complementary course, taken from the a la carte menu. It was lovely. However, the remainder of the evening was already spoiled by this time. We paid over £200 for a very mediocre experience and, while a little discount was taken off the bill, our anniversary was spoiled. We have held a family wedding at this hotel and we have stayed on several occasions. Unfortunately, we are unlikely to return unless we are assured of a much better experience.

We went there for our 10th anniversary, I knew the place was adequate for this kind of situation. We have been seated in a very comfy and silent corner, and food, even though it consisted in small portions, was served in the right time to appreciate flavors and the architecture around us. Since we reserved a table for the anniversary occasion, we had a little cake at the end, with the option to take it away. Sadly, this was the less astonishing part or the dinner (just because of the amazingness of the rest of the food) however, much much appreciated. Our dinner was chosen from the plant-based menu, I would say they have enough options to be surprised when the dish comes to you, but I'm sure the regular dishes would be much more well-finished. Obviously, being as 5 stars hotel, the food is gourmet. So don't expect to be full satiated like when you eat by your grandmother!

Went for dinner in the Great Room . Beautiful setting : very impressive . However a few details do not make it great ! The portion size took me back to the 80s and nouvelle cuisine ! You will leave hungry . The music played...

Service was good - food just ok. Half way through the meal a disc jockey arrived and it was impossible to hear one another. Completely inappropriate for this type of so called fine dining restaurant. Would not go back

This was the setting to celebrate my partner's birthday, and was certainly a 'great' surprise for her. The room itself also deserves the adjective 'great'. Very luxurious and impressive. Service is impeccable, but you would expect this at this price. We went for the tasting...

We went here for a birthday meal. The service from staff was fantastic throughout our dining however once we had finished dessert , they left us alone which meant that we were never asked if we would like a further drink before leaving. The decor is absolutely beautiful and the food delicious even if expensive. A nice treat once in a while.

We visited here almost 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon and had planned have lunch here, but just know the only served afternoon tea at this time .So we tried the traditional afternoon with earl grey and cocktail as well flat white. The desserts and sandwiches are the same either you ordered is tea or wine .The sandwiches were incredible delicious which beyond my expectations. And we were treated with the utmost courtesy by the staffs. All the staffs are attentive and knowledgeable. The most important is the setting, which l heard were transformed and decorated from a band, was really definitely fabulous and beautiful, just like sitting in a castle. However, you may visit in other times if you want to try the main courses rather than a afternoon tea.

Visited here for breakfast as we’d seen it had good reviews. It was quite empty when we arrived but tables soon started to be filled. The playlist was fantastic and I have to say, aside from the lovely flowers on the tables, this was the best thing about our visit. The man serving us was miserable, the service was slow, our food sat on the pass for quite some time, my toasted bagel was literally shown the toaster, and the sausages were over cooked and quite flavourless and by the time the food arrived my partner’s tea had gone cold. Around 30 mins for a sausage and bacon bap, when there were only another 2 or 3 tables (one of which had already been served) was a long wait. Probably wouldn’t revisit which is a shame as it looked lovely from the outside!

This restaurant was recommended by a local we happened to befriend and glad we followed his advice. The food and service were excellent! We happened to eat there on a Sunday and was able to use their "special" Sunday menu. Nice atmosphere and delicious meal. Recommended big time!

In Belfast on our way to the titanic exhibition and stopped for a light lunch. Lovely little cafe, lots of yummy lunch choices like ham and cheese croissants and hot baguettes and so many cakes 😋 tea came in a massive pot and we were offered top ups of hot water which was a lovely touch. Really friendly staff, definitely recommend 👌🏻

Captian Cod's se encuentra a solo 5 minutos a pie de mi oficina y se ha convertido en mi chippy preferido, aunque tenemos entre 3 y 4 personas a una distancia similar.
